Opis:
The author refers to the concept of ‘tourism space’ published earlier, and confronts this notion with a definition of ‘urban space’, bearing in mind that both these ‘spaces’ are subspaces of general ‘geographical space’. Assuming that each is distinguished on the basis of differing criteria, the author believes that the tourism function which gives rise to ‘tourism space’ can develop within ‘urban space’. Further on, the formulation of a precise definition of urban ‘tourism exploration space’ is focused on, which is understood as a personal space of created in the discovery of a city. The conclusion includes three case studies of urban ‘tourism exploration space’ in Łódź: Bidermann family properties, Piotrkowska courtyards and the ‘Green Ring of Tradition and Culture’.

Opis:
The five sociological papers in this volume have one common feature – they all concern urban issues. Each of them is an attempt to assess the condition of a post-socialist and a post-industrial town. This condition is associated with the current status and the transformations of urban space. Hence, on the one hand, urban space appears to be extremely resident-friendly and supportive of civic activities and initiatives, but on the other hand, it shows to be affected by controversial consequences caused by the growing number of revitalising projects (including, in particular, gentrification of the revitalised urban areas). Many of the programmes aimed to activate urban residents fail, and even access to ‘tourist attractions’ (e.g. cultural institutions) proves unfair in practice. All the five papers aim to identify the main reasons (social, cultural, economic) that have rendered the attempts to democratise and improve the quality of urban space ineffective. They also seek to provide an answer to the question what needs to be done to avoid similar failures in the future.

Opis:
Innovative buildings and structures as a means of humanization of urban space are considered. Innovative buildings and structures are designed for various processes of human life. Innovative buildings are the objects of technologies, where the latest achievements in various fields of science and technology are realized. They were created gradually in the process of civilization development, but at all the stages of historical development they were distinguished by their novelty (they didn’t have analogs), their unconventional constructive and compositional space-spatial solution which provides the individual artistic image of the object. These buildings should be differentiated into historical and modern. At each stage of historical development, they were architectural objects with new qualitative characteristics. The main patterns in the formation of innovative historical and modern objects are identified. The application of the phenomenological concept in the design of innovative buildings, when the architectural environment acquires its properties depending on the spatial – physical and utilitarian – needs of a human, where a person is viewed as a functioning object, as well as spiritual-aesthetic needs, where a person is considered as a perceiving subject, becomes urgent. The aspects of the humanization of the urban environment that innovative buildings should fulfill are determined.

Opis:
This article is an attempt to describe the meaningful, symbolic, metaphorical and metonymical elements of inhuman urban space present in the prose works by Bulatović. The detailed analysis includes the discussion of structural features of the urban hell, the presentation of its permanent attributes and inhabitants – “the people of the lowest rank” who are led by the mentally ill misfits and political and economic immigrants from the Balkans and the Central and Eastern Europe. The study includes the examination of the static elements of the big-city infernum (a tavern with people of dubious repute as the reflection of the otherworldly space). It also draws the attention to the mental picture of the city created in the mind of a mad person (the urban space as a perceptive creation, an infernal labyrinth, a trap, and a place of assault). It also presents the space of the West European metropolis as the area of criminal activities of the immigrant rabble, revanchists, and political vampires (the acts of the characters in the liminal space of the city: railway stations, underground stations and tunnels, bars, cemeteries). The basic discussion is preceded with the reflection on the infernal inspirations, derived from painting and literature, in the prose works by Miodrag Bulatović (referring to the cultural context, interdisciplinary perspective). The article makes use of the conceptual apparatus in the scope of demonology, infernology, psychopathology, the anthropology of culture, and the history of art.

Opis:
In this paper, we discuss the presence of community gardens in urban spaces and the types of activities performed there, using the city of Poznań as a case study. First, based on interviews with representatives of selected non-governmental organisations, analyses of available Internet sources as well as our own field research, cartographic and photographic documentation, we identify community gardens in the space of the city and explore their formation process. In the course of our study we also concentrate on the type of garden location. In addition, we devote our attention to the gardens which have disappeared from the fabric of the city. Our study reveals that community gardens currently operating in Poznań are established in non-central locations. These gardens are scattered in various parts of the city. Only in the Łazarz district there are two community gardens. Most frequently, community gardens are established on plots between old blocks of flats and tenement houses. Two gardens are located on underdeveloped greenery near the Warta River and in two city parks. A detailed examination of the events held in the community gardens in the Łazarz district in the years 2014–2017 shows that they had a very diversified character. Both of them turned out to be multifunctional, i.e. hosted meetings devoted to agriculture and horticulture, environmental education, artistic events, DIY and recreation. However, the percentage of events in the structure of the meetings organised in the gardens differed considerably.

The text aims to explore the economic and spatial strategies followed by artists who run micro-firms. The authors analyse results of a qualitative study of independent artist enterprises in Kraków. It reveals that motivations for artistic entrepreneurship are diverse and foremost linked with the need to overcome challenges artists experience in the labour market and in the market for cultural goods and services. Different strategies translate into particular location choices as well as varied visibility of such firms in urban space.

The thesis of a symbolic significance of space for a particular community underscores the integrating role of place as a cultural value. The author analyses the connection between the space of French suburbs and the identity of their inhabitants, especially those of immigrant extraction. Therefore, she refers to selected texts of the rich output of French hip-hop artists. She places the pieces in the context of the responds given the French of immigrant roots surveyed in 2003. The analysis of the works of the French rappers demonstrates that their texts express a strong identity with the place of origin and residence built on cultural separateness and, simultaneously, on a strong feeling of social homogeneity of the quarter, which is an additional integrating factor.
