    Opis:
    The aim of this article is to introduce volunteering and lifelong learning as activities that have positive impact on senior citizens’ quality of life. First, the author introduces the importance of different types of activities and their benefits for eldery people and the community. Next section in devoted to volunteering among the eldery (particularly the ways to promote this kind of activity in Poland) and University of the Third Age, i.e. an institution whose aim is to educate and stimulate pensioners. The last part of the article presents barriers to activity of senior citizens.

    Opis:
    The text is an attempt to present the peculiar group of teachers which comprises both of academic professionals , and community workers working for pleasure, often with out formal technical or pedagogic classifications. Their common aim is to involve in prolonging the educational process of the last phase of a man’s development – post-productive and post-professional stage of life. The author made an attempt to systematize the determinants outlining the transformations of the given group of teachers in the perspective of forty years. This is, however, a prospect of the entire closed history of Universities of the Third Age (U3A). In the face of developmental prospects of U3A in Poland it is essential to consider the future recruitment of academic teachers. One of important elements, and at the same time restrictions, there will probably be an idea of a system solution in Polish U3A. This will probably be a compilation of the French and British U3A models; therefore this text also includes an out line of both of these strategies relating to the prospect of demographic, transformations parallel to the increase in educational aspirations of senior citizens.

    Opis:
    The article presents the assumptions, process, reflections and conclusions from the project entitled “U3A – Learning – Creating – Supporting” („UTW: Uczyć – Tworzyć – Wspierać”) funded by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, as part of the “Support for Universities of the Third Age” program. The authors, beside description of the project and outline of the U3A’s development, face up some questions: What is the future of the U3A in Poland? Are we watching their twilight in the second decade of the 21st century? or maybe on the contrary – we are witnessing the renaissance of this educational institution? And referring to theory and practice they try to give the answers. Based on a preliminary analysis of the objectives of the project and activities undertaken for the benefit of older people, the authors point to several directions of development in which, in their opinion, U3A follow or can follow.
    Artykuł prezentuje założenia, przebieg, refleksje i wnioski z projektu pt. „UTW: Uczyć – Tworzyć – Wspierać” finansowanego przez MNiSW, w ramach programu „Wsparcie Uniwersytetów Trzeciego Wieku”. W artykule obok zarysu historii UTW, podejmowane są próby udzielenia odpowiedzi na następujące pytania: Jaka jest przyszłość uniwersytetów  trzeciego wieku w Polsce? Czy w drugiej dekadzie XXI wieku obserwujemy ich zmierzch? A może wręcz przeciwnie – jesteśmy świadkami renesansu tej placówki edukacyjnej? Autorki  bazując na wstępnej analizie założonych celów projektu „UTW” oraz działań podejmowanych na rzecz osób starszych, wskazują kilka kierunków rozwoju, w których, ich zdaniem, mogą zmierzać i zmierzają uniwersytety trzeciego wieku.

    Opis:
    The article is regarding the mobilization of the elderly people taking place through activity of the University of the Third Age. An occurrence of the old age was described with her significant features including biological, psychological, social and spiritual dimensions of the life of the man. The elderly gradually is backing out of performed roles in society, can feel loneliness, pushing the social life into the background and produced fears with expectation of the death. A fact that seniors have a great development potential was emphasized, need of active activity in different fields of the life and the tendency of developing many interests. A history of the formation of the University of the Third Age was presented as well as their mission, cells, functions and areas and forms of the influence on the elderly were characterised, as well as to the society. These institutions are motivating elderly people in the intellectual, emotional, public, cultural and artistic aspect, as well as enable to include into the course of events general-social. School curricula carried out and forms of the influence contain a lot of contents of the gerontological prevention. University for seniors are counteracting the social exclusion of this group as well as are activating to action and the improvement of the quality of their life.
