Since August 2008 a project at the Uppsala University Museum, the Museum Gustavianum, has been auditing the university’s unmanaged departmental collections. Two years into the audit the project has entered into its second phase and in this article we discuss the goals we have in mind as well as some of the problems that we have encountered. By way of two case studies we illustrate the development of the project and finally we discuss the results that we have already achieved as well as those that are expected.

Opis:
One of the more interesting collections of plaster prototypes, as yet not thoroughly studied, is the Warsaw collection of plaster casts. In the to-date studies it has been analysed from the perspective of history and history of art as a homogenous whole, a carrier of artistic culture. However, what is still missing are analyses focusing on basic facts as perceived by a museum curator, enabling identification of the objects composing the collection. The present paper aims at discussing the issues related to the identification of the works’ models and interpretation of works which come from university museums’ collections. The case study selected will concern one of the statues from the collection of the University of Warsaw. A detailed study of the cast of the goddess demonstrates how an analysis of one object can extend the knowledge of a whole museum collection. An accurate identification of the object and of its provenance allow us to better see custodians’ motivation for the selection of definite exhibits, and to enhance our understanding of how museum exhibits shape Polish culture and scholarship.

Opis:
A cast bronze coin belonging to the 2nd series of the Olbian “asses,” dated to the second half of the 5th century BC, is included in the collections of the Jagiellonian University Museum. The coin was probably added to the university collection in 1871, as a gift of Baron Edward Rastawiecki (1805–1874) for the archaeological unit. According to the donor, the “as” was found during the excavation of a barrow in the village of Ostrohladovich in Minsk province – currently Astrahlady/Astrahliady/Ostrogliade (Belarusian Астрагля́ды, Russian Острогляды) in Belarus in the Gomel region, in the Brahin district. In the first millennium BC this area was occupied by the Miłograd culture. Finds of coins produced in Olbia, in particular the Olbian “asses,” have not been recorded outside the Black Sea region until recently. In recent years, however, finds of early Olbian coins (known as “dolphins” and “asses”) have been recorded in the forest-steppe zone. These new discoveries give credence to the finding of the “as” from Ostrohladovich. The coin arrived in the area of the Miłograd culture probably via the Scythians.

This article presents the results of a search for memorabilia related to Jędrzej Śniadecki (1768–1838), a prominent Polish chemist, doctor and columnist. He was born in Żnin in Greater Poland, educated in Kraków and his professional life was associated with Vilnius. This search for memorabilia related to Jędrzej Śniadecki (except for archival materials) was conducted in Vilnius and Kalczuny in Belarus, which has a school museum devoted to Jędrzej Śniadecki and other scholars. However, no personal belongings related to the scholar were found at these locations. At present, the only items known to have belonged to Jędrzej Śniadecki are included in the collection of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. These items are: an 18th-century microscope, a line gauge dating to 1834 and a ceremonial spade which formed an element of the academic regalia worn by professors of the Imperial University of Vilnius. The article discusses the above mentioned items and their provenance. In 1964, the microscope was transferred to the Jagiellonian University Museum in Kraków from the Botany Unit of the Jagiellonian University by Professor Władysław Szafer (1886–1970) with the information that it had belonged to Jędrzej Śniadecki. It is a Cuff-type microscope made of wood, cardboard, bone and glass, manufactured in Nuremberg. The microscope attributed to Śniadecki bears the initials JFF. It is not a high quality product, but microscopes from Nuremberg gained popularity as toys rather than test instruments. The second item attributed to Jędrzej Śniadecki is a 24-inch folding line gauge which consists of two parts. It was bought in 1957 by the Jagiellonian University Museum from Professor Andrzej Ciechanowiecki, who had inherited it in 1945 from Maria Kazimierzowa Osiecimska-Czapska (née Śniadecka), a great-granddaughter of Jędrzej Śniadecki. In the family, this item was regarded as a memento of Jędrzej Śniadecki which came from Boltup. Another memento of the scholar is a ceremonial spade. Tradition has it that it belonged to Jędrzej Śniadecki and was an element of the ceremonial regalia worn by the professors of the Imperial University of Vilnius. In 1878, the spade was donated to the Archaeological Cabinet of the Jagiellonian University by Kazimierz Jan Wilczyński (1806–1885), a doctor, art collector, publisher and member of the Vilnius Temporary Archaeological Commission.

The article is devoted to formation of personal qualities of the future teachers in the homogenous space, “university – museum”, which is created through the use of educational opportunities of the museum as a cultural institution, as well as through the new approach to the historical and cultural evaluation of the material that is taught. The author explains the phenomenon of “muzeyefikatsiya obrazovaniya”. The article presents the characteristics of a would-be teacher, reveals the essence of Pedagogy subject in the teaching program for students of pedagogical specialties using museum resources and “muzeyefikatsiya obrazovaniya”. The author discusses experimental studies which aim to create a common space “university – museum” in order to develop in future teachers such skills as historical thinking, culture of behavior, aesthetic taste, perception of integrity of objects and phenomena.

During 2013, the University of Cambridge Museums (UCM) introduced an innovative research internship initiative aimed at early career academic researchers. The Connecting with Collections (CwC) scheme offered six interns from British universities the opportunity to gain hands-on museum experience, while working independently on individual research projects within the collections of the UCM consortium. This paper presents: 1. An Overview of Connecting with Connections Scheme: programme rationale, aims and funding, recruitment and project choice. 2. Training and Opportunities: group training sessions, as well as snapshots of individual experiences within the museums and 3. Internship Outputs: including an end-of-internship Symposium and other outcomes for interns. It briefly surveys the six internship projects before drawing some conclusions about the CwC programme and highlighting some of the debates around the future direction of the internship scheme for UCM.

Opis:
The first decade of activity by the University Museum in Toruń, which has been open since 2005, is already complete. Located in an old building of the Reichsbank from 1906 (later the National Bank of Poland), it offers good facilities for presenting and storing museum objects (for example, the old bank treasury is used as storage) safely. The museum collection mainly consists of artworks, such as ceramics and ancient glass, old European art, and 18th- to 20th-century Polish paintings and engravings. The University Museum collection is distinguished by one of the largest and most representative collections of works by Polish artists in exile. Within a decade, the University Museum in Toruń has managed to visibly mark its presence through intensive exhibition, scholarly, publishing, teaching and promotional activity, all with relatively few employees and collaborators. The main problem faced by many university museums, which limit their activities to storing their legacy and function mainly as teaching facilities, has been avoided. With free admission and fixed opening hours, the University Museum in Toruń is predominantly intended for people from outside the university, and it has thus become an intermediary between the university and the public.
Muzeum Uniwersyteckie w Toruniu, udostępnione w 2005 r., pierwszą dekadę działalności ma już za sobą. Zlokalizowane w dawnym budynku Banku Rzeszy z 1906 r. (a później Narodowego Banku Polskiego) dysponuje dobrym zapleczem do prezentacji i bezpiecznego przechowywania muzealiów (np. jako magazyn wykorzystuje dawny bankowy skarbiec). Zbiory muzeum mają charakter przede wszystkim artystyczny i obejmują ceramikę oraz szkło antyczne, europejską sztukę dawną, a także polskie malarstwo i grafikę XVIII-XX wieku. Tym co wyróżnia zbiory Muzeum Uniwersyteckiego jest jedna z największych i najbardziej reprezentatywnych kolekcji prac artystów polskich działających na emigracji. W przeciągu dekady udało się, przy nielicznym zespole pracowników i współpracowników, trwale zaznaczyć obecność Muzeum Uniwersyteckiego w Toruniu poprzez intensywną działalność wystawienniczą, naukową, wydawniczą, dydaktyczną i popularyzatorską. Uniknięto problemu wielu muzeów uniwersyteckich, które ograniczają się do przechowywania materialnego dorobku uczelni i pełnienia funkcji zaplecza dydaktycznego. Muzeum Uniwersyteckie w Toruniu, chociażby poprzez bezpłatny wstęp i stałe godziny udostępniania zbiorów, skierowane jest przede wszystkim do odbiorców spoza uczelni, a tym samym stało się pośrednikiem między uniwersytetem a społeczeństwem.

Problem określony w tytule niniejszego artykułu może być potraktowany jako jeden z kluczowych, tak w perspektywie współczesnego, jako też – rozwijającego się sektora muzealnego w Polsce. Edukacja muzealnego personelu (z uwzględnieniem specjalizacji kuratorskiej, konserwatorskiej, inwentaryzatorskiej, edukatorskiej i innych) traktowana jest przez organizatorów muzeów (w tym Ministra Kultury i Dziedzictwa Narodowego oraz władze samorządowe) jako jeden z najważniejszych czynników, determinujących rozwój dziedziny kultury, jaką jest muzealnictwo, a zarazem jedną z możliwych blokad, które ów rozwój mogą zakłócić. W podjętym w niniejszym artykule procesie ewaluacji zależności między dostępną ofertą a oczekiwaniami muzealnych środowisk wzięto pod uwagę: historyczny oraz prawny kontekst zawodowej kategorii „muzealnik”, szczególnie w kontekście polskim, zasób danych statystycznych, opisujących liczebność osób zatrudnionych w muzeach oraz z muzeami współpracującymi, a także zmiany w tej kategorii zawodowej, w końcu zaś ofertę kształcenia skierowaną do polskich muzealników, przede wszystkim przez szkolnictwo wyższe oraz działające na rzecz muzealnictwa instytucje kultury. Podsumowaniem artykułu są rekomendacje dotyczące możliwych korekt w istniejącym systemie kształcenia muzealników w Polsce.
The problem indicated by the title of the present article can be seen as one of the most important in relation to the Polish present-day museum sector and its future. The education of museum staff (including all specialisations, such as curators, conservators, inventors, educators and so on) is identified by museum organisers (e.g. the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage or the local authorities) as one of the most important factor that determines the development of this sector of culture and one of the possible blockades in the above mentioned process. In the process of evaluation the relations between the educational offer and the museum ‘demand’ for specialists were analysed in the following way: historical and legal context of the category ‘museum professional’, especially in the Polish context, statistical data connected with the ‘target’, which means the current and future amount of the museum workers (co-workers) and finally a precisely presented offer prepared by the Polish university system and the sector of cultural institutions (source of the data: the National Institute of Museology and Preservation of Collections). The above presented examinations and analyses are concluded in the form of series diagnoses and recommendations which could be treated as a kind of correction in the currently functioning system of education of museum workers.

This paper presents examples of mathematical models which have almost passed into oblivion, yet a few decades ago still played a significant role in the teaching of mathematics. In the late nineteenth century such devices started to be produced on a large scale for schools and universities. The Jagiellonian University Museum has three such models in perfect condition in its collections.
W artykule podajemy przykłady modeli matematycznych, obecnie niemal zapomnianych, które jeszcze kilkadziesiąt lat temu odgrywały wielką rolę w dydaktyce matematyki. Z końcem XIX wieku powstała prężna produkcja tych modeli na użytek szkół i uczelni. W Muzeum UJ zachowały się w doskonałym stanie trzy takie modele.

People have always been interested in discovering their past and seeking answers to their existential questions. Therefore institutions like museums, which collect exhibits related to the history and development of humans, have been known since antiquity. However, museology today has changed and is no longer confined to establishments related to popular fields like painting, sculpture and archaeology. Nowadays, there are also museums dedicated to medical sciences, which present the history of humanity in the sphere of its biological development. The Medical University in Wrocław can boast of several such establishments, although so far they have been treated as separate institutions. For this reason, the idea was created to combine them all into a single museum route, and to make it available to a broader visitor base. Thanks to this, people can view items from old and modern medicine practice located in many different sites, allowing them to deepen their knowledge and expand their interests. To make it easier for visitors to navigate through such a diverse complex, a special museum path has been created, along with a description of each location.

Since 2015, the Jagiellonian University Museum has regularly partnered with the Jagiellonian University of the Third Age (JUTA) by organizing lectures for seniors on selected issues concerning the history and collections of the university. The author of this paper extensively surveyed the attendees to evaluate how much information they were able to remember. To illustrate the absorption of knowledge by seniors, the questionnaires were analyzed in terms of three questions: (1) Did most of the respondents obtain a positive (i.e. good or highly satisfactory) or negative (unsatisfactory) result? (2) Which result (unsatisfactory, good, or highly satisfactory) did the largest number of respondents achieve? (3) What was the ratio of unsatisfactory to highly satisfactory results? The questionnaires highlighted the strongest points of the program, but also its shortcomings. Based on them, we can conclude that the lectures make a lot of sense, enriching the JUTA students with knowledge bordering on popular science as well as specialist knowledge. An important benefit of the study is feedback for those preparing and delivering the lectures.

The Medical History Museum founded in 2011 within the structure of the Medical University of Warsaw (WUM), following the solutions introduced at the Humboldt University in Berlin and the University of Vienna, is planning to shortly introduce coordination of protection and display of the historic tangible heritage of the school. In both Berlin and Vienna in the early 21st century the project of university collection inventory was launched. Just over several years it yielded a large-scale digitizing process, foundation of theme websites, publications, and organization of temporary exhibitions promoting the historic university collections. The Association of University Museums established in Poland in 2014 has for several years been drawing inspiration from the German and Austrian models. The WUM Medical History Museum, resorting to the experience of the Berlin and Vienna universities, has applied numerous ideas for the integration of the historic collections, their identification, and recreation. Following the history of medical collections in Warsaw from the 1st half of the 19th century up to contemporary times, the Author analyses the model for this museum strategy, while also presenting examples of dangers resulting from the mismanagement of university historic heritage.
Powołane w 2011 r. w ramach Warszawskiego Uniwersytetu Medycznego (WUM) Muzeum Historii Medycyny – wzorem rozwiązań wprowadzonych na Uniwersytecie Humboldtów w Berlinie i Uniwersytecie Wiedeńskim – planuje wdrożyć w najbliższym czasie koordynację ochrony i ekspozycji historycznego dziedzictwa materialnego uczelni. W stolicach Niemiec i Austrii na początku XXI w. rozpoczęto projekt inwentaryzacji kolekcji uniwersyteckich. W ciągu kilku lat skutkowało to – na wielką skalę – digitalizacją zabytków, uruchomieniem tematycznych stron internetowych, wydawaniem publikacji i organizacją wystaw czasowych promujących historyczne zbiory akademickie. Pewne inspiracje z wzorców niemieckich i austriackich czerpie od kilku lat, powołane w Polsce w 2014 r., Stowarzyszenie Muzeów Uczelnianych. Korzystając z doświadczeń uniwersytetów berlińskiego i wiedeńskiego, wiele pomysłów dotyczących scalania historycznych kolekcji, ich identyfikacji oraz odtwarzania, zamierza też uwzględnić w swojej działalności Muzeum Historii Medycyny WUM. Śledząc historię kolekcji medycznych w Warszawie, od 1. poł. XIX w. po czasy współczesne, autor artykułu zastanawia się, jak powinna taka muzealna strategia wyglądać, a także prezentuje przykładowe zagrożenia związane z niewłaściwym zarządzaniem uczelnianym dziedzictwem historycznym.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to introduce the activities of museums and collections located in the structure of Polish higher education institutions. The analysis is based on concrete examples of academic units operating today. The authors distinguish several categories of museums according to their location, among them university and departmental museums. The second criterion is the organisational formula, in which the authors indicate, apart from museums, also centres and history interpretation units. Using archaeological, medical and natural history collections as examples, they describe similarities and differences in the way they work with resources. The article is also an attempt to start a discourse aimed at drawing attention to the potential lying in such units, the mission and duty of which is to preserve, secure, develop and make available for scientific and didactic purposes the heritage of the university and the history of science. The authors also refer to the legal situation of the university museum units and regulations, which the organisers may use when creating and conducting activities related to the collection and processing of tangible and intangible academic heritage, which is part of the world’s scientific heritage.

Muzea uczelniane organizowane i prowadzone przez szkoły wyższe stanowią formę organizacyjną działalności kulturalnej. Oprócz swych podstawowych celów, związanych z gromadzeniem i trwałą ochroną dóbr naturalnego i kulturalnego dziedzictwa ludzkości, realizują one także dodatkowe zadania dotyczące działalności naukowej, dydaktycznej i oświatowej. Tworzenie muzeów uczelnianych jest cenną formą udoskonalania i uatrakcyjniania procesu naukowego i dydaktycznego oraz widocznym aspektem działań podejmowanych przez szkoły wyższe na rzecz społeczności lokalnych i regionalnych. Przepisy powszechnie obowiązujące nie odnoszą się wprost do problematyki muzeów uczelnianych, z uwagi na to kwestie te pozostają w gestii ich organizatorów, czyli szkół wyższych. Takie rozwiązanie prawne stanowi wyraz poszanowania autonomii uczelni, a także umożliwia prowadzenie samodzielnej polityki rozwoju. Funkcjonowanie muzeów uczelnianych, co do zasady, na podstawie statutów szkół wyższych rodzi jednak liczne kontrowersje o charakterze merytorycznym.
College (university) museums are organizational form of cultural activities. That kind of institutions – due to situating as part of the higher education institution – apart from basic aims of museums, such as accumulation and the permanent protection of goods of the natural and cultural legacy mankindes are carrying out also additional tasks concerning the participation in the teaching, as well as educational scientific activity. Generally applicable provisions don’t refer directly to issues of college museums, these issues are regulating the articles of university statutes. Such a solution constitutes the respect for the autonomy of higher education institutions, as well as enables them to lead creative development policies. Creating college museums is a valuable form of improving and making more appealing the scientific and teaching process.

Muzea w krajowych bibliotekach uczelnianych, poza izbami pamięci, nie występują, a już muzeum prezentujące technikę jest absolutnym wyjątkiem. W artykule zaprezentowano takie muzeum, utworzone w ramach Biblioteki Głównej uczelni technicznej, jaką jest Politechnika Śląska. Przedstawiono proces powstania Muzeum, charakterystykę działalności, zaprezentowano sposób tworzenia katalogu i podano jego lokalizację. Przedstawiono też Stowarzyszenie Muzeów Uczelnianych, z którym współpracuje placówka gliwicka.
Museums in national university libraries, apart from the chambers of remembrance, are not common. The museum presenting the technique is an absolute exception. The article presents such a museum created as part of the Main Library of a technical university, which is the Silesian University of Technology. It presents the process of its creation, characteristics, and the way of creating a catalogue and its location. The Association of University Museums with which we cooperate was also presented.

Artykuł dotyczy badań archeologicznych prowadzonych jesienią 2021 roku w Ogrodzie Krasińskich w Warszawie. Program nieinwazyjnej eksploracji na terenie byłego getta jest wynikiem wspólnego projektu Muzeum Getta Warszawskiego i Christopher Newport University w Wirginii, USA. Kierownikiem zespołu badawczego był prof. Richard Freund, koordynatorem ze strony polskiej był dr Jacek Konik. Wykopaliska w Ogrodzie Krasińskich trwały tylko 6 dni i były prowadzone na ograniczonym obszarze, niemniej program będzie kontynuowany, a wyniki badań już dowodzą, że eksploracja archeologiczna na terenie Getta Warszawskiego jest metodą badawczą, która umożliwia stosunkowo szybko zebrać informacje zarówno o samej „dzielnicy żydowskiej”, jak i o jej mieszkańcach. Metoda badawcza jest tym bardziej obiecująca, że znana obecnie dokumentacja fotograficzna wielu obszarów getta jest niekompletna.
The article deals with the archaeological exploration conducted in the autumn of 2021 in Krasiński Garden in Warsaw. The program of non-invasive exploration in the former ghetto area is the result of a join project of the Warsaw Ghetto Museum and the Christopher Newport University, Virginia, USA. The head of the research team was Prof. Richard Freund, the coordinator on the Polish side was Dr. Jacek Konik. The excavations in Krasiński Garden lasted 6 days only and were conducted in a limited area, nevertheless, the program will be continued, and the results of the research already prove that the archaeological exploration of the Warsaw Ghetto area is a research method that makes it possible to gather information relatively quickly, both about the "Jewish quarter" itself and about its inhabitants. The research method is especially promised due to fact that currently known photographic documentation of many areas of the ghetto is incomplete.

The article presents dr Adam Stefan Zamoyski, a known historian, biographer, author of many books and articles about Polish and European history. Two major bestsellers are the history of Poland: je Polish Way and 1812. Napoleon’s Fatal March on Moscow and its sequel Rites of Peace. His books have been translated into Russian, Chinese, Japanese and Persian as well as into most of the European languages. His comprehensive history of Poland, je Polish Way, not only featured in the best-seller lists for several weeks when it came out in 1987, but has never been out of print since. Zamoyski has also contributed to all the major British papers and periodicals, as well as lecturing widely in England, Europe and the United States. Alongside his professional activities, Adam Zamoyski has always been profoundly concerned with cultural heritage, its preservation and popularisation. He has worked on a number of projects, including the restoration and revaluation of the Czartoryski Museum in Kraków. Adam Zamoyski is a member of many charities, e.g. Polish Association of the Sovereign Military and Hospitaller Order of Malta. In 1991 he established the Foundation of St John of Jerusalem in Warsaw, the rst charitable organ of the Order of Malta in Poland. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, of the Royal Society of Arts, and of the Royal Society of Literature. In 2012 Adam Stefan Zamoyski received the honorary doctorate of the Polish University Abroad in London.

The date 17 November 2022 marked the death of Prof. Andrzej Marek Wyrwa, a historian and archaeologist, a long-standing professor at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, and Director of the Museum of the First Piasts at Lednica. Born on 22 March 1955 in Krzyż Wielkopolski, he graduated in history (1978) and archaeology (1981) from the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan. Bonded with his alma mater in his scholarly activity, where he worked uninterruptedly as of 1984, he was conferred doctoral degree in 1985, postdoctoral degree in 1996, and became professor in 2004. Having headed the ’Łekno’ Archaeological Expedition in 1982–2008, he conducted excavations at Ł3 archaeological site at Łekno near Wągrowiec which resulted in a spectacular discovery of pre-Romanesque rotunda relics dating back to the Early- -Piast monarchy, of a stronghold, and of a Cistercian monastery founded in 1153. In many aspects that research into the whole settlement complex around Łekno was trailblazing, extensive, and interdisciplinary. Having become Director of the Museum of the First Piasts at Lednica in 2008, over the 14 years of his contribution to that institution he implemented crucial projects enabling its operation. In 2013, he extended the archaeological reserves at Ostrów Lednicki, Giecz, and Grzybowo. He also extended the Dziekanowice seat of the Museum making the dream of generations of Polish scholars and museologists come true: to have Ostrów Lednicki’s Piasts’ heritage proudly manifested. Not so long ago, since on 7 October 2022, together with Prof. Wyrwa we happily celebrated the launch of the new Museum building. Furthermore, his academic legacy contains over 625 academic studies, works for general public, and pieces of feature writing.

W kolekcji znaleźć można wiele ciekawych podręczników od najstarszych XIX-wiecznych, aż po najnowsze z początku XXI wieku, które zostały wycofane ostatnią reformą oświaty.
The collection of the Main Library of the Pedagogical University of Krakow has a special subcollection of textbooks, didactic materials and publications on teaching methods. These books have been withdrawn from the current teaching programs. The collection contains many interesting textbooks from the oldest, from 19th century, to the latest, from the beginning of the 21st century, which were discarded in the last reform of education.

In the January 2016 Department of Applied Social Science and Museum in Gliwice launched project entitled “Around the Technopoly”. The project was addressing to the citizens of Gliwice. The aim of the project was to conduct the discussion about the influence of technology on self and society beyond the walls of academia. The continuation of this project was second project entitled “On the Digital Paths” addressing to the youth. The aim of this project was to endow young people with awareness of threats and chances of digital technology. At the same times projects were promoting the intellectual tradition of media ecology. Theoretical basis of those projects was belief of social relevance of humanities (especially philosophy) and attempt to create a space for ‘open humanities’.
W styczniu 2016 roku Katedra Stosowanych Nauk Społecznych oraz Muzeum w Gliwicach rozpoczęły projekt „Wokół technopolu”. Projekt był skierowany do mieszkańców Gliwic i miał na celu rozszerzenie dyskusji na temat wpływu technologii na psychikę i organizację społeczną poza mury akademii. Kontynuacją tego projektu był drugi projekt skierowany do młodzieży i zatytułowany „Na cyfrowych ścieżkach”. Celem tego projektu było uświadomienie młodym ludziom szans i zagrożeń związanych z mediami cyfrowymi. Jednocześnie oba projekty promowały tradycję intelektualną znaną jako media ecology. Teoretyczną podstawą obu projektów było przekonanie o społecznym znaczeniu humanistyki (zwłaszcza filozofii) oraz próba stworzenia przestrzeni dla „otwartej humanistyki”.
