    Opis:
    The article discusses the transformation of Ukraine from a peripheral colony to a European nation-state. It examines changes in the interpretation of UkrainianRussian relations in historiography, public perceptions, and museum exhibitions related to the ongoing war. It demonstrates that since 24 February 2022, Ukraine’s politics of memory has exclusively followed a continuously expanding anti-colonial perspective. The article highlights a shift in Ukrainian society’s view of its past, with growing interest in the country’s history and a move away from the Soviet perspective. Museums are crucial in shaping these narrative changes and fostering Ukrainian national identity. The article also explores societal transformations since 1991, showing an increased identification with the state and a gradual distancing from Russia. This is accompanied by a westward turn in geopolitical orientation and a desire to join the European Union. The National Museum of History of Ukraine in the Second World War in Kyiv serves as an example of these processes, reflecting a nuanced portrayal of the war and of its human dimension. The museum’s commitment can be seen as a pillar of a nation-state building project, with symbolic identification shifting from the East to the West, towards the EU and NATO.

    Mikhail Minakov, DIE UMGESTALTUNG DES KOLLEKTIVEN GEDÄCHNISSES. DIE IDEOLOGISCHE FUNKTION DES UKRAINISCHEN INSTITUTS FÜR NATIONALES GEDÄCHNIS IN 2014-2017. „PORÓWNANIA” 1 (24), 2019. T. XXIV, S. 31-43. ISSN 1733-165X. Nach dem Euromaidan entwickelte sich die Ukraine widersprüchlich. Neben der Demokratisierung und Europäisierung verbreiteten sich auch konservative Ideologien und Einschränkungen der bürgerlichen Freiheiten. Diese letzteren Tendenzen waren mit dem Versuch verbunden, ein ideologisches Monopol (ein System der ideologischen Kontrolle, das in der UdSSR existierte und in den Dekommunisierungsprozessen von 1989-91) im Interesse der heutigen herrschenden Gruppen zu etablieren. Eine der Institutionen, die die Möglichkeit der Wiederbelebung des ideologischen Monopols ergänzen, ist das Ukrainische Institut für Nationales Gedächtnis. In diesem Text argumentiert der Autor, dass sich das Institut nach mehreren Reformen zwischen 2006 und 2018 zu einer staatlichen Einrichtung entwickelt hat, die konservative Kulturpolitik und eine Politik der illiberalen Identität betreibt, die die staatsbürgerliche demokratische Konsolidierung der Ukraine untergräbt. Anhand der Analyse der politischen Rolle und der bisherigen Erfolge des Instituts gelangt der Autor zu dem Schluss, dass die derzeitige Kulturpolitik und die Organisationspraktiken des Instituts ein neues postsowjetisches ideologisches Instrumentarium geschaffen haben, mit dem Machteliten effektiv ein konservatives ideologisches Monopol in der Ukraine aufbauen können.

ISSN 1733-165X. The post-Euromaidan’s Ukraine has developed in a contradictory way: together with democratization and Europeanization, there was also a spread of conservative ideologies and limitation of civic freedoms. The latter tendencies were connected with the attempts at establishing ideological monopoly— a system of ideological control that existed in USSR and disappeared in the decommunization processes of 1989-91—in the interests of nowadays’ ruling groups. One of those institutions adding to the possibility of revival of the ideological monopoly is the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory. In this paper, the author argues that after several reforms between 2006 and 2018, theInstitute evolved into a state body providing conservative cultural policies and illiberal identity policies undermining Ukraine’s civic democratic consolidation. Based on the analysis of the Institute’s political role and achievements so far, the author concludes that the current cultural policies and organizational practices of the Institute (and similar organizations) have created a new post-Soviet ideological toolkit enabling power elites to effectively establish conservative ideological monopoly in Ukraine.

    Невід’ємною складовою відносин України і Росії є «війни пам’яті». Сучасна російсько-українська війна є не лише війною за українську територію, що її прагне захопити РФ, але й протистоянням між українським світом, як органічною частиною Європи, та так званим «русским миром», в основу якого покладено ідею імперського реваншу. Автор вважає, що справжньою суттю українсько-російських відносин є протидія українського світу планам Росії (Московії) поглинути Україну, що триває вже кілька століть.
    «Memory wars» are an integral part of relations between Ukraine and Russia. The modern Russian-Ukrainian war is not only a war for Ukrainian territory, which the Russian Federation seeks to capture, but also a confrontation between the Ukrainian world, as an organic part of Europe, and the so-called "Russian world", which is based on the idea of imperial revenge. The author believes that the real essence of Ukrainian-Russian relations is the opposition of the Ukrainian world to the plans of Russia (Muscovy) to absorb Ukraine, which has been going on for several centuries.        
    „Wojny pamięci” są integralną częścią stosunków między Ukrainą a Rosją. Współczesna wojna rosyjsko-ukraińska to nie tylko wojna o terytorium Ukrainy, które chce przejąć Federacja Rosyjska, ale także konfrontacja światu ukraińskiego, jako organicznej części Europy, u podstaw którego leży idea imperialnej zemsty. Autor uważa, że prawdziwą istotą stosunków ukraińsko-rosyjskich jest trwający od kilku stuleci sprzeciw świata ukraińskiego wobec planów Rosji (Moskwa) wchłonięcia Ukrainy.

    This essay contains a description and critical appraisal of the contemporary Ukrainian state’s policy in regard to memory of the Volhynian and Galician massacres of 1943–1945. The author engages in polemics with Tomasz Stryjek, who recently published a book on this and other issues: Ukraina przed końcem Historii. Szkice o polityce państw wobec pamięci [Ukraine Before the End of History: Essays on State Policy in Regard to Memory]. In the author’s opinion, Stryjek one-sidedly, or even naively, places hope in the idea that the EU, in the not-too-distant future, will exert effective pressure on the government in Kiev to make it adapt its narrative about the activities of the OUN and UIA against Poles and Jews to European standards of memory about the Second World War. In the author’s opinion, the Ukrainian narrative about the activities of the OUN and UIA is based on the erroneous conviction—which is comfortable for the Ukrainian side—of equal guilt in the Polish-Ukrainian conflict of 1939–1947. He argues that there should be no cessation of efforts to remind Ukrainian historians and authorities about the responsibility to condemn, unambiguously, the mass crimes committed by national independence groups.
