Polish-Ukrainian reconciliation was one of the most momentous events for the East Central Europe in the second half of the 20th century. Religious hierarchs of both nations contributed a lot to interethnic reconciliation. Polish-Ukrainian rapprochement was remarkable for particularly involvement of representatives of the Catholic Church into this process and keeping aloof of Orthodox clergy from normalization of Polish-Ukrainian relations. The recommendations of the Second Vatican Council, encyclicals of Saint John XXIII, Paul VI and John Paul II and implementation of the principle “We forgive and are asking for forgivness” created preconditions for interethnic reconciliation. Saint John XXIII in his encyclical “Pacem in terris” had criticized the idea of peacekeeping by an arms race and the balance of power doctrine – “real and lasting peace between nations must be based not on a balance of power but on mutual confidence”. Activities of Pope John Paul II gave a powerful incentive to Polish-Ukrainian reconciliation. The role of Churches as a kind of people’s diplomacy one could resort to increased when complicated interethnic problems weren’t managed to resolve at government level. The most important actions of Rome Catholic and Greek Catholic Churches in behalf of interethnic rapprochement were celebration of the 1000th Anniversary of the Christianization of Rus'-Ukraine, Eucharistic Congress in 2003, joint appeals on the occasion of Volhynian massacre. The achievement of Polish-Ukrainian reconciliation based on universal values and Christian civilization was an evidence of new European thinking and significant factor of building of the united Europe.

W artykule prezentowany jest mało znany memoriał z grudnia 1917 r., sporządzony przez czołowego działacza Polskiej Centrali Demokratycznej na Rusi, późniejszego wybitnego dyplomatę, Romana Knolla. Autor przedstawił w nim syntetyczną ocenę wydarzeń rewolucyjnych nad Dnieprem i zarysował program działań odradzającego się państwa polskiego wobec Ukrainy. Myśli zawarte w tym dokumencie, rozwijane przez Knolla w następnym okresie, wywarły istotny wpływ na formułowanie się założeń polityki wschodniej obozu piłsudczykowskiego.
The article presents a little-known memorial drawn up in December 1917 by a leading activist of the Polish Democratic Centre in Ruthenia and, later on, a prominent diplomat Roman Knoll. In the memorial, the author presented a synthetic assessment of the revolutionary events on the Dnieper and outlined a programme of action for the reborn Polish state with regard to Ukraine. The thoughts contained in this document, which Knoll developed in the following period, significantly influenced the formulation of the Piłsudski camp’s eastern policy.

Przedmiotem pracy jest opracowanie edytorskie korespondencji Stanisława Vincenza i Iwana Senʹkiwa. Jego podstawą są skany mikrofilmów pochodzące z Archiwum Stanisława Vincenza w Zakładzie Narodowym im. Ossolińskich we Wrocławiu. Stanisław Vincenz (1888–1971) był pochodzącym z Huculszczyzny pisarzem i eseistą. Ukraiński etnograf – Iwan Senʹkiw (1913–?) poznał go w 1934 roku w Słobodzie Rungurskiej w czasie spotkania pasjonatów panidealizmu szwajcarskiego filozofa i psychologa Rudolfa Marii Holzapfla. Wspólne zainteresowania stały się spoiwem przyjaźni korespondentów. Łączyła ich także bliska więź z Jerzym Stempowskim. Pierwszą część pracy poświęcono opisowi relacji korespondentów, a zwłaszcza roli, jaką w życiu Iwana Senʹkiwa odegrał Stanisław Vincenz. Podjęto próbę scharakteryzowania najważniejszych wątków poruszanych w listach oraz stylu epistolograficznego Stanisława Vincenza. W nocie edytorskiej przedstawiono podstawowe problemy, jakie stwarzają listy Stanisława Vincenza. Kolejna część pracy zawiera transkrypcję korespondencji z lat 1951–1965. Listy opatrzono niezbędnymi objaśnieniami.
Станіслав Вінценз (1888–1971) — письменник і есеїст Гуцульщини. Український етнограф – Іван Сеньків (1913–?) познайомився з ним у 1934 році на Слободі Рунгурській під час зустрічі ентузіастів панідеалізму швейцарського філософа і психолога Рудольфа Марії Гольцапфля. Спільні інтереси стали зв'язком дружби між кореспондентами. Також у них були близькі стосунки з Єжи Стемповським. Перша частина опрацювання присвячена опису стосунків кореспондентів, а особливо ролі, яку відіграв Станіслав Вінценц у житті Івана Сеньківа. Зроблено спробу охарактеризувати найважливіші теми, порушені в листах, та епістолографічний стиль Станіслава Вінценца. У редакційній примітці представлені основні проблеми, поставлені листами Станіслава Вінценца. Наступна частина роботи містить стенограму листування 1951–1965 років. Списки були надані з необхідними поясненнями.
The subject of the article is editorial elaboration of correspondence between Stanisław Vincenz and Ivan Senkiv as a special case of Polish-Ukrainian relations. It is based on microforms’ scans from Stanisław Vincenz Archive in National Ossoliński Department located in Wrocław. The first part portrays the relation between friends with special emphasis on the role of Vincenz in Senkiv’s life. The paper makes an attempt to describe, characterize and name the most important issues, which were brought up in the letters, as well as epistolographical style of Stanisław Vincenz. The editorial note presents the basic problems posed by Stanisław Vincenz’s letters. The next part of the work contains a transcription of the correspondence from the years 1951–1965. The letters are provided with the necessary explanations.

The article is an attempt at reconstructing the artistic and critical literary activity of a Ukrainian painter Iwan Trusz, who noticed a great need of the Ukrainian society to cultivate and develop national art. The Ukrainian artist also contributed to the development of Polish art of that period, as he was highly estimated among Polish intellectuals and took an active part in Polish and Ukrainian cultural enterprises that took place in Lviv at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The experience which Trusz gained during his education in the Cracow Academy of Fine Arts, as well as his direct contact with distinguished Polish painters (e.g. Leon Wyczółkowski, Jan Stanisławski) evoked in the painter a great need to take care of the enrichment of contemporary Ukrainian art and to raise the awareness of Galician Ukrainians about the effect which art has on the formation of every nation. Looking at the activity of Trusz‑an artist or Trusz‑an art critic from the perspective of the 21st century, makes it possible to find the answers to some key questions: “Should national art be promoted?”, “How to educate society through art?” and “What is the role of an artist during the formation of an independent nation?”

This article examines the representation of Polish theatre on the Ukrainian festival map. This study includes key stages, events, and trends, and aims to uncover both positive developments and underlying problems. The research is based on sources such as published material, information resources, and my experience as a theatre critic. The periods of individual “breakthroughs” (1992–2000), “local encounters” (2001–2011), and “dramaturgical and performative landing forces” (from 2011) are identified and briefly characterized. The article outlines a broad geographical and genre-specific range of festivals in which Polish theatres participate and highlights their contribution. It also discusses the reception of individual performances by Polish theatres in Ukrainian criticism. The author focuses on the absence of iconic plays of Polish theatre on the posters of Ukrainian festivals (the exception is Bzik tropikalny (The Tropical Craze) by Witkacy, directed by Grzegorz Jarzyna, 1998). This resulted in the fact that the most important achievements of Polish theatre remained unknown to the Ukrainian audiences, and the professional community gravitated more towards Russia than towards the West. Given the more than four-hundred-year history of Polish–Ukrainian relations, it is essential that steps be taken to restore Polish–Ukrainian theatrical communication in order to ensure that Ukrainian theatre is connected to the European cultural space.
Artykuł analizuje obecność polskiego teatru na ukraińskiej mapie festiwalowej. Obejmuje kluczowe etapy, wydarzenia i trendy, a jego celem jest odsłonięcie zarówno pozytywnych zmian, jak i podstawowych problemów. Tekst opiera się na opublikowanych materiałach, informacjach festiwalowych i doświadczeniach autorki jako krytyczki. Wyróżniono i krótko scharakteryzowano trzy okresy indywidualnych „sukcesów” (1992–2000), „spotkań lokalnych” (2001–2011) oraz „dramaturgicznych i performatywnych desantów” (od 2011 roku). Artykuł daje obraz lokalnej i gatunkowej różnorodności festiwali, w których uczestniczą polskie teatry, i podkreśla, jak wiele wnoszą w ich programy. Omawia również recepcję poszczególnych spektakli polskich teatrów w ukraińskiej krytyce. Autorka zwraca uwagę na nieobecność ikonicznych spektakli polskiego teatru na afiszach ukraińskich festiwali (wyjątkiem jest Bzik tropikalny Witkacego w reżyserii Grzegorza Jarzyny, 1998). To sprawiło, że ukraińska publiczność nie poznała najważniejszych osiągnięć polskiego teatru, a środowisko teatralne ciążyło bardziej ku Rosji niż ku Zachodowi. Biorąc pod uwagę ponad czterystuletnią historię stosunków polsko-ukraińskich, konieczne jest podjęcie kroków w celu przywrócenia polsko-ukraińskiej komunikacji teatralnej, aby zapewnić ukraińskiemu teatrowi połączenie z europejską przestrzenią kulturową.

The aim of the article is to analyze methodological aspects of implementing research project in a culturally different environment, where a language and national identity difference between interviewee and interviewer is present. The analysis is based on the fieldwork done by the Polish researcher in Ukraine. I try to answer whether different nationality influences in such situation the interaction with the interviewees and the results of the research, whether it is a burden or an advantage, and how this possible influence can be controlled. I am interested in issues of contact with the interviewees and interaction during the interview as such, as well as various kinds of the narrative’s modification by the interviewee because of the different nationality of the researcher. I illustrate the following problems with citations of the interviews conducted in the frame of the project.
Celem artykułu jest analiza metodologicznych aspektów prowadzenia badań w obcym kulturowo środowisku, w sytuacji różnic językowych i różnych identyfikacji narodowych badacza i rozmówcy. Analiza problemu podjęta została na przykładzie badań terenowych zrealizowanych przez polską badaczkę na Ukrainie. Staram się odpowiedzieć na pytanie, czy odmienna narodowość ma w takiej sytuacji wpływ na interakcję z rozmówcami oraz otrzymywany materiał, czy jest ona obciążeniem czy zaletą, a także w jaki sposób można ten wpływ kontrolować. Interesuje mnie kwestia kontaktu z rozmówcami i interakcji podczas samego wywiadu oraz różnego rodzaju przypadki modyfikowania narracji przez rozmówcę ze względu na odmienną identyfikację narodową badacza. Prezentację poszczególnych problemów pojawiających się w toku realizacji badań i analizy materiału ilustruję fragmentami nagranych w ramach badań wywiadów.

Today, problems related to intercultural communication are actively studied by representatives of various sciences. As a result of this study, many concepts related to intercultural communication have been introduced, which have become the subject of research in both scientific and practical fields. Often, in defining intercultural communication, representatives of cultural studies, sociology, psychology and linguistics emphasize their professional approach to this phenomenon and reflect their unique view of it. This article focuses on the theoretical and practical aspects of intercultural communication and cultural exchange within the framework of Polish-Ukrainian relations in the context of current events, in particular Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Polish support for Ukraine has become important and has many aspects, including humanitarian aid, political support, and economic cooperation. This support contributes to strengthening mutual understanding and solidarity between the Polish and Ukrainian peoples, as well as promotes the exchange of culture and traditions. The article presents a study of cultural exchange and interaction between the Ukrainian and Polish communities during the military actions in Ukraine. Focusing on the period after the invasion, the study examines the intense cultural exchange that took place between the two national groups. This exchange included the exchange of art, literary works, musical performances, and other cultural expressions. It reflects the efforts of both nations to maintain friendly relations and promote mutual understanding in a complex geopolitical context. Cultural exchange contributes to the expansion of knowledge, deepening of understanding and perception of another culture. Art, literature, and other cultural expressions allow people to get acquainted with the world and traditions of other nations, which makes it possible to form common values and opens a dialogue between Ukrainians and Poles. This dialogue helps to increase mutual understanding and improve relations between these communities in the face of historical challenges. It also examines various practical aspects of organizing cultural initiatives and further developing interaction between Ukrainian and Polish cultural heritage after the Russian invasion. These aspects include the organization of joint cultural events, cultural exchange, joint projects in the field of education, and so on. The study opens up new promising horizons for understanding cultural interactions in the context of global change and contributes to deepening interaction between national communities.

During tne mid-war period Lviv was a leading centre of Ukrainian cultural and political life in Polish state. Despite the untavourable political situation Ukrainian elites tried to create mythologized image of the city as a ”heart and brain” of West Ukraine. In 1928 the opportunities for such actions were, among others, parliamentary elections in March, and - in November - 1st anniversary of the outbreak of the Ukrainian-Polish war.
У міжвоєнний період м. Львів виступало центром українсыкого політичного та культурного жкиття Польщі. Незважаючи на непрості політичні обставини, українсыкі еліти намагалися формулювати образ міста як „серця й мозку" західної України. У 1928 р. нагодою до цього стали, зокрема, березневі вибори до парламенту та листопадові святкування десятої річниці спалаху українсыко-польської війни.

This article focuses on interethnic relationship in a diaspora situation within a multicultural society. Using the example of the relationship between Polish and Ukrainian immigrants in the United States author try to provide an answer to the question whether and to what extent are the interethnic relations transferred into a diaspora situation? In the analysis particular attention is focused on the macro and microsocial determinants of mutual relationships as well as on the various elements of interethnic relations, including: spheres of cooperation, conflict areas, daily interactions, ethnic distance, mutual perceptions and spatial relations.The major descriptive and the basic definition term is „displaced borderland”. This concept is based on the assumption that the contacts and relations between these groups are very often determined by the European heritage.

In recent years, in particular since the beginning of Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine, large waves of Ukrainian immigrants have come to Poland. The structure of the migration, with the domination of women and children, oblige Polish courts and other authorities to deal with the issues of parental responsibility, contacts with children, custody and maintenance in the cross-border context. In this situation, the bilateral Agreement between the Republic of Poland and Ukraine on legal assistance and legal relations in civil and criminal matters, signed in Kiev on 24 May 1993, acquires a new significance. It contains both the procedural rules (on jurisdiction, international legal aid, service of documents, as well as the recognition and enforcement of judgments) and confl ict of law provisions in the field of broadly understood civil matters, including relations between parents and children. The author undertakes a critical analysis of the provisions of Polish-Ukrainian Agreement as with respect to filiation (children’s origin), parental responsibility and child maintenance. The anachronism of its solutions and the need for its termination is emphasized.

W pierwszej części artykułu zarysowano teoretyczne ramy funkcjonowania różnorodnych opisów przeszłości w teraźniejszości. Wyróżniono trzy perspektywy narracyjne: naukową, perspektywę pamięci oraz perspektywę polityczną. Postawiono tezę, że perspektywy te bardzo często funkcjonują w swoistym przemieszaniu, a dominującą rolę w perspektywie naukowej odgrywa paradygmat etnohistoryczny. Druga część pracy dotyczy przyczyn istniejących w środowisku naukowym nieporozumień w zakresie interpretacji wydarzeń na Wołyniu i Galicji Wschodniej w latach 1943–1944. The first part of the article outlines a theoretical framework for the functioning of various descriptions of the past in the present. Three basic narrative perspectives are distinguished here: the scientific perspective, the perspective of memory, and the political perspective. Polish-Ukrainian relations in the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth century were very complicated. Apart from tensions resulting from the emerging national identity of both nations, economic issues were also important. The class divisions in this area coincided with the ethnic ones. The situation was also worsened by the enfranchisement carried out during the January Uprisingand the rapid growth of the rural population. All these factors contributed to bringing both nationalities into conflict which was one of the goals of tsarism’s policy.

Poniższy tekst przedstawia zarys dziejów i funkcjonowania środowiska polskiego zamieszkałego w Mariupolu na Ukrainie. W pierwszej części opracowania główną uwagę poświęcono charakterystyce działalności Polaków skupionych w miejscowych strukturach polonijnych oraz ich aktywności w ramach Kościoła rzymskokatolickiego. Gros rozważań poświęcone zostało okresowi minionych 15 lat XXI wieku, choć w celu zrozumienia istoty położenia Mariupolaków sięgnięto również po omówienie wybranych aspektów z wcześniejszych dwustu lat dziejów miasta. Druga część poświęcona została zabiegom mającym na celu doprowadzenie do ewakuacji z zagrożonego wojną miasta osób polskiego pochodzenia. Omówiony został proces organizacji tego przedsięwzięcia oraz jego wykonanie. Scharakteryzowano zabiegi mające na celu doprowadzenie do legalizacji pobytu przybyszy, rozsiedlenia Mariupolaków w poszczególnych polskich ośrodkach oraz ułatwienia i adaptacji do nowych warunków funkcjonowania. Zasygnalizowano również możliwości funkcjonowania osób pozostałych w Mariupolu. Integralną częścią rozważań jest zaprezentowanie różnych form pomocy udzielanych przez Polskę i Polaków potrzebującym zarówno na Ukrainie, jak i na terenie Polski. Elementem rozważań jest także prezentacja i ocena zachowań władz państwowych, opozycji politycznej, mediów i samych Polaków w stosunku do dążeń osób polskiego pochodzenia zamieszkałych w Mariupolu.
The article outlines the history and functioning of the Polish community residing in Mariupol, Ukraine. The first part of the paper focuses on the characteristics of Poles within the local Polish community structures and their actions within the Roman Catholic Church. A great deal of the discussion is devoted to the past 15 years, but some aspects of the previous two hundred years of the city’s history are also reported in order to understand the essence of the Mariupoles’ position. The second part is dedicated to efforts aimed at evacuating citizens of Polish descent from a city at risk of war. The process of its organizing and implementation is touched upon. Actions conducted to legalize newcomers’ stay, relocate Mariupoles to Polish centers, as well as facilitate and help them to adapt to the new conditions are characterized. The viability of those people who remained in Mariupol is also indicated. An integral part of this paper is unveiling forms of aid granted by Poland and Polish people to the needy both in Ukraine and on the territory of Poland. Attention is given to the presentation and evaluation of the behavior of the government, the political opposition, the media and the Poles themselves in relation to the aspirations of people of Polish origin living in Mariupol.
