Opis:
For centuries, identity has been an important existential issue, because it organizes human relation with the world. Identity is not only one man's being in a biological sense, but the principle of social and cultural order. The identity is the self-awareness, the result of the social actor's involvement in a variety of network connections which are forming a human being together with the biological dimension. Thus, the identity, on the one hand, is a kind of Erikson's tradition, namely the sense of being human, on the other hand interactionist tradition, modification of identity through a process of interaction. Contemporary world, the world of confronting cultures, raises the need for analysis of identity within many cultures, which has been shaped by continuous contact with different values, norms, patterns of behaviour. Upper Silesia has been our empirical reference point for the discussion on social (regional) identity. Identity of Upper Silesia is the result of a long and complicated history and present day. This identity is created by Polish, German, Czech and Jewish a cultural elements.

A new ceratite locality from Gołuchowice (Upper Silesia, Poland) is described. Ceratites from the spinosus group found there include Ceratites (Acanthoceratites) cf. praespinosus, found for the first time in Upper Silesia. Five ceratite zones are proposed for that region: pulcher, robustus, compressus, evolutus and spinosus. The taxonomic compositions of individual ceratite zones from Upper Silesia are almost identical to those of corresponding zones from the Holy Cross Mountains. However, ceratite zones in Poland show lower taxonomic diversity than their equivalents in Germany.

Opis:
The article contains considerations on contemporary everyday life in Silesia. Its main aim is the interpretation of novels written in the late 2010s, for instance Od jednego Lucypera (From the same devil) by Anna Dziewitt-Meller, Pokora by Szczepan Twardoch, Kajś. Opowieść o G.rnym Śląsku (Kajś. A Story of Upper Silesia) by Zbigniew Rokita. Those stories are genologically placed between a family saga, herstory and myth retelling, but the most important purpose for the authors was the recognition of the specific Upper Silesian culture, past and present experiences and visions of the local community.

Opis:
Considering that in the last few years culinary matters have become a fashionable topic, the author is making a preliminary attempt at assessing many myths and authoritative opinions related to it. With respect to this aim, she has reviewed utilitarian literature, to which culinary handbooks certainly belong ("Concerning the studies of comestibles in culture"). In this context, she has singled out cookery books pertaining to only one region, Upper Silesia. This region has a complicated history, being an ethnic borderland, where after the 2nd World War, the local population of Silesians acquired new neighbours: repatriates from the Eastern Borderlands annexed by the Soviet Union, settlers from central and southern Poland, as well as former emigrants coming back from the West ("The treasures of culinary heritage’ in cookery books from Upper Silesia"). The author discusses several Silesian cookery books which focus only on the specificity of traditional Silesian cuisine, the Silesians’ curious conservatism and attachment to their regional tastes and culinary customs, their preference for some products and dislike of other ones. From the well-provided shelf of Silesian cookery books, she has singled out two recently published, unusual culinary handbooks by the Rev. Father Prof. Andrzej Hanich (Opolszczyzna w wielu smakach. Skarby dziedzictwa kulinarnego. 2200 wypróbowanych i polecanych przepisów na przysmaki kuchni domowej, Opole 2012; Smaki polskie i opolskie. Skarby dziedzictwa kulinarnego. 2500 wypróbowanych i polecanych przepisów na przysmaki kuchni domowej, Opole 2014), which have become a culinary bestseller in Upper Silesia. The author perceives these books as an interesting and unusual example of a monothematic "collective lecture" pertaining to the multi-cultural character of Opole Silesia, the noticeable foreign influences and the globalisation of culinaries. In her opinion, these books constitute a very rich set of materials pertaining to the present-day culture of consumption in Poland, with a discernible emphasis on Opole Silesia.

The results of the palynostratigraphical studies presented in this paper come from five boreholes Patoka 1, Czarny Las, Woźniki Śląskie K1, Kobylarz 1 and Poręba as well as from four outcrops at Lipie Śląskie, Patoka, Zawiercie and Poręba, in Upper Silesia (southern Poland). The palynostratigraphical zonation presented by Orłowska-Zwolińska (1983) for the epicontinental Upper Triassic of Poland was applied. The palynomorph spectra are marked by different preservation states, combined with the frequent occurrence of reworked specimens, probably even from Palaeozoic strata. The spore-pollen assemblage recognized in the “Chrzanów Formation” belongs to the early Carnian verrucata Subzone of the palynological longdonensis Zone. The spectrum from the Stuttgart Formation represents the Carnian astigmosus Zone. Spectra in the Patoka Marly Mudstone-Sandstone Member (Grabowa Mudstone-Carbonate Formation), with the Lisowice bone-bearing horizon, represent the middle and late Norian meyeriana b Subzone. The Rhaetian age of the bone-bearing succession in the Lisowice–Lipie Śląskie clay-pit suggested in the literature was not confirmed. The age of assemblages from the “Połomia Formation”, which overlies the Patoka Member, was not determined, owing to the poor state of miospore preservation. Moreover, three types of palynofacies were recognized as being characteristic for a fluvial channel (1), a flood plain (2), and lacustrine and playa environments (3) as well as for an undetermined milieu. Type 1 was found in the deposits of the Stuttgart Formation, the Patoka Member and the “Połomia Formation”, type 2 in the Patoka Member and the “Połomia Formation”, type 3 in the “Chrzanów Formation”, the Stuttgart Formation and the Patoka Member.

The article describes the participation of youth from Lesser Poland and Cieszyn Silesia in the fight for the Cieszyn Region and in Silesian Uprisings in the years 1919–1921. Already in November 1918, Polish youth joined Polish military formations in Cieszyn Silesia, and then in January 1919 they took part in the fights with the Czechs for these lands. Later, together with young people from other regions of Lesser Poland, they took part in the fight for Lviv. Subsequent Silesian uprisings were supported by young inhabitants of the whole of Lesser Poland, both through participation in the propaganda campaign, as well as in bloody fights and guard duty at the border. A number of them died, and their heroic deeds are evidenced by the battle decorations awarded to them. Faithful to the idea of fighting for independence, they took part in taking over power in the Polish lands, and then joined the ranks of defenders of these lands in large numbers and contributed to shaping the borders of the Second Polish Republic.

Opis:
In this article the author illustrates the activity of police services in Upper Silesia between 1918 and 1922. In introduction the author describes international and political position of Upper Silesia. In this period the special Military Inter-Allied Commission of Control was a temporary legislator and administrator of Upper Silesia. The main task of the Commission was to conduct a plebiscite and divide a disputed territory. It also established its internal policy. Moreover, the Commission had its own police services, which were outlined chronologically in this article. Sicherheitspolizei was the first police service, formed in times of the German Reich. Sicherheitspolizei was replaced by combined plebiscite police, which operated until the division of Upper Silesia between Poland and Germany. In the mean-time a special police, military police and municipal police operated simultaneously in Upper Silesia. During the analysis of particular police service the author paid a close attention to its organization, assignments, conditions of recruitment and attitude to obligation to maintain neutrality towards the plebiscite. Activity of police services was elaborated against the background of the events of that time, such as the plebiscite, Silesian Upris-ings and rivalry between Poland and Germany. The article was mainly based on Polish literature, bilingual archival materials and partially on German literature.

This year we are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Polish-Bolshevik war and the outbreak of the Second Silesian Uprising. Among results of the Versailles decisions a one redraw Poland on the map of Europe and the country was reborn after 123 years of partitions. These events had a huge impact on the further fate of the reborn Polish state. In the first years after Poland regained independence, the political and military authorities in the country focused on consolidating the pre-partition territories. Also the press played a significant role in this task. In the twenties, journalism was the primary source of knowledge about the surrounding world. Journalists played an important mission in promotion of the fighting spirit and shaping patriotic awareness in the lands of the former partitioning powers. Editorial point of view often strongly influenced the public opinion, becoming an effective weapon in the fight to strengthen the independence move. The journalistic activity of Bolesław Koskowski in the pages of "Kurier Warszawski" fits in a special way and deserves attention. In his numerous articles, we can find confirmation that Warsaw was not indifferent to the struggle to join Upper Silesia to the Motherland.

Opis:
The industrialisation of the Upper Silesia, development of new towns and industrial settlements, and various methods of Germanisation applied to the society caused changes in the ethnic structure of this region and strengthened the position of the German language there. The major opponent to German was the Silesian dialect used both by town dwellers and countrymen in their families and neighbouring communities, and also by the scarce representatives of the Silesian intelligentsia. The differences between the village slang and that of the people living in towns were mainly connected with vocabulary which, especially in the industrious centres, was exposed to strong German influence. The common language of the intelligentsia was that of a mixed character; it included many phonetic dialectical characteristics, even though irregularly used ones. The general Polish language was known passively, but not used. It was the language of the prayer books, songs, sermons, calendars, and magazines printed by the local publishing houses. All of these factors created a specific linguistic situation which was based on the following issue: in the Silesia of the second half of the 19th century, the opposition of spoken language versus the language of printed texts equalled the opposition of dialect versus the literary Polish language.

UPPER SILESIA
Opis:
The album 'Skarby ziemi wydarte. Gorny Slask i pogranicze' (Treasures Extracted from the Earth. Upper Silesia and the Borderland), was published in 2005 by the Silesian Centre of Cultural Heritage in Katowice. It is the outcome of editorial cooperation supervised by Eugeniusz Tomczak and involving scientific institutes, museums, cultural institutions, and the collector Roman Czarnecki. A presentation of archaeological monuments and objects discovered in the present-day voivodeships of Silesia and Opole. The well-devised and logical arrangement. of the book starts with an Introduction by Jerzy Piekalski, in four versions: Polish, English, German and Czech, with the author discussing the fundamental concepts and most essential issues of archaeology. He also outlined the history of Silesia, emphasising the fact that this is a region of the permeation and stratification of assorted cultures. Finally, the reader is informed that the content of the album was based on the scientific accomplishments of Silesian archaeologists. The basic part of the album is composed of photographs of archaeological objects and monuments, accompanied by a scientific commentary which contains: a name, a description, dates, cultural affiliation and, in justified cases - the objective, remarks about the technology of execution, the history of extraction, together with the name of the researcher, and a brief depiction of the archaeological site, analogies, and place of storage. The photographs, together with a commentary and the name of the locality from which the monuments and object originate, have been arranged chronologically from the Palaeolithic Age to the Renaissance (sixteenth century). The lavish and high-quality illustrations has been selected extremely carefully, and the publishing house has guaranteed a superior poligraphic standard. The only shortcoming appears to be the absence of a scale in the presentation of the monuments, which makes it impossible to visually determine their size (the actual dimensions are listed in the commentaries). The publication has been outfitted with a selective bibliography. It also contains a map with marked localities in which the monuments presented in the album had been discovered, as well as their index with complete administrative data.

The subject of this article is alcohol-related problem among Upper Silesia miners at the turn of 19th century. I described the most characteristic moments of Upper Silesia employees’ lives in which alcohol was present, such as different kinds of holidays, feasts and gatherings. Drunkenness in this period of time was connected to miners’ social environment’s mentality and to their everyday and religious life. That is why I referred to various stages of this professional group’s lives. The range of this article, although it concerns events from 19th and 20th century, includes the territory of today’s Upper Silesia, but without Zagłębie Dąbrowskie (Coal Fields of Dąbrowa). For the needs of the article I made a division between alcoholism and drunkenness, explaining the differences between these phenomena. I tried to explicate the reasons of drinking as well.

The emergence of separate nationalities often entails standardisation of the language and an attempt to prove its multifunctional nature, while codification as such becomes one of the basic demands of ethnic movements striving to-wards emancipation. In her paper, the author analyses the process of emanci-pation of Silesian in the context of linguistic ideologies, studying above all the ideologies shared by Silesian ethnic leaders. The conclusions presented in the paper are based on analyses of numerous in-depth interviews conducted with Silesian ethnic leaders. This approach makes it possible to take into account, in the analysis of linguistic processes, the point of view of the users of the specific language and their linguistic awareness, and also makes it possible to seek relationships between linguistic awareness, language structure and social phenomena.

According to the National Census of Population and Housing 2011, Silesians are the second largest nationality in Poland. Nevertheless, Silesian nationality is not recognised under Polish law. In this paper, the main aspects of the identity of the Silesian people are discussed. Research was carried out using questionnaire-based interviews in ten municipalities in the Silesian Voivodeship, characterised by the greatest share of Silesians. The ethnic identity of Silesians is complex - more than half of the respondents declared dual nationality. Most of the respondents demand the recognition of the Silesian ethnolect as a regional language, and consequently, its inclusion as a school subject in Upper Silesia. The postulate of establishing autonomy is popular, with a model of the Silesian Voivodeship from the period of interwar Poland.

Soundscape is an individual feature of a region. That is confirmed by the case of Upper Silesia, where until recently, the sonic layer was an unambiguous factor of regional identification. The evolutional cultural landscape in Upper Silesia has a relict feature. This traditional geographical-historical region is subject to radical globalization of economic and social processes, which also have their own spatial and multisensory aspect. That results in unification of landscape, including its sonic layer. The Silesian dialect is the remainder of characteristic sounds. It is regarded among the most archaic ones. Another element related to sound concerns traditional human behaviors, characteristic rituals and customs accompanied by music.
