Opis:
Using newspaper articles, government and charity reports and other secondary sources, this paper looks at the new problem of widespread homelessness brought about by the UK austerity economic policy after 2010. It assesse the growth of the problem due in particular to the re-engineering of welfare benefits. Looking at those who have fallen through the net, the paper focuses on the ability of local authorities to use the law to decline to support those presenting as homeless, including those released from prison. Addressing punitive measures taken by local authorities and law enforcement agencies, it highlights the difficulties faced by those targeted by such agencies. In the final section I look at two contrasting models of policy vis-à-vis homeless people – those in use in the United States and in Finland. The UK neither officially countenances homeless camps, as in the US, nor offers housing as a right, as in Finland. Drawing on an accusation made by Chris Glover in a December 2018 academic paper, I conclude that Friedrich Engels 1844 concept of social murder has been committed against thousands of people in an act of a term I coin as ‘Classism’. This act of class war against the most vulnerable has made many thousands more homeless and in precarious housing.

Opis:
Zirconium 89 ($\text{}^{89}Zr$) is a promising radionuclide for development of new PET agents due to its convenient half life of 78.4 h, $\Beta^{+}$ emission rate of 23%, low maximum energy of 0.9 MeV resulting in good spatial resolution, a stable daughter isotope of yttrium-89 ($\text{}^{89}Y$) and favorable imaging characteristics, with only one significant γ -line of 909 keV emitted during decay alongside the 511 keV positron photons. Our aim was to share over 2 years of experience of producing isotopically pure $\text{}^{89}Zr$ via the $\text{}^{89}Y(p,n)^{89}Zr$ nuclear reaction with a COSTIS Solid Target System (STS) and CYCLONE 18/9 cyclotron. We optimized the yields without producing either of the long-lived impurities $\text{}^{88}Zr$ or $\text{}^{88}Y$. The degradation of the beam energy with 400 and 500 μm thick niobium foils was tested without overheating problems within 2-6 h of irradiation. From repeated measurements of activity, it was clear that there is a bi-exponential decay of radioactivity due to the short lived $\text{}^{89m}Zr$ and $\text{}^{89}Zr$. The measured half life of the longer lived radionuclide was consistent with value for $\text{}^{89}Zr$. The energy spectrum from $\text{}^{89}Zr$ had energy peaks at 511 keV and 909 keV and was consistent with $\text{}^{89}Zr$. Production of $\text{}^{89}Zr$ with 400 ($E_{p}$ = 9.8 MeV) and 500 μ m ($E_{p}$ = 11.6 MeV) thick niobium beam degrader was achieved, without producing either $\text{}^{88}Zr$ or $\text{}^{88}Y$. It was necessary to wait at least 4 hours before measuring the activity and decay correct in order to calculate the $\text{}^{89}Zr$ activity at the end of cyclotron production. Degrading the proton beam to 10 MeV produces radionuclidically pure $\text{}^{89}Zr$ with yields from 8 to 9 MBq/μAh. Whilst this is enough for pre-clinical use, the yield is not enough for either clinical use or commercial supply. Use of thinner beam degraders (400 μm) increases the proton beam energy and increases the radionuclidic yield to 15.5 MBq/μAh whilst maintaining radionuclidic purity.

Catechol oxidase catalyses the oxidation of a broad range of catechols to the corresponding o-quinones through the four-electron reduction of molecular oxygen to water, without acting on tyrosine. The resulting highly reactive quinones autopolymerize to form brown polyphenolic catechol melanins, a process thought to protect the damaged plant against pathogens or insects. This work describes the catalytic activity of some radiopharmaceuticals like Tc-99m pertechnetate, Tc-99m mercaptoacetyltriglycine (MAG3), Tc-99m nanocolloid, Tc-99m methylenebis(phosphonic acid) (MDP) and Tc-99m methoxyisobutylisonitrile (MIBI) for oxidation of catechol. The catalytic oxidation of 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol by selected radiopharmaceuticals saturated with molecular oxygen was studied in a homogeneous system. All the radiopharmaceuticals exhibited catecholase-like activity.

Hydrogen peroxide is an ubiquitous metabolite in living systems, produced at increased levels in a variety of pathological situations. Therefore suppressing or at least controlling $H_2O_2$ production is important. Catalase enzymes can convert hydrogen peroxide into water and dioxygen and a similar role can be played by transition metal ions or some radiopharmaceuticals. (1) $TcO_4^-$, (2) Tc-99m mercaptoacetyltriglycine (MAG3) and (3) Tc-99m methoxyisobutylisonitrile (MIBI) were each tested for their ability to catalyse the disproportionation of hydrogen peroxide in the presence of the added base imidazole. It was found that (2) and (3) exhibit acceptable catalase-like activity compared to the Tc-99m pertechnetate.

Opis:
In the summer of 2019 as the UK was in the midst of heated Brexit debates and Theresa May’s minority government clung on to power, Professor Louise Ryan interviewed Professor Nira Yuval-Davis about her recent book Bordering (Yuval-Davis, Wemyss and Cassidy 2019). Although things have changed in some significant ways since that interview, for example Boris Johnson has now replaced Theresa May as Prime Minister, and won a landslide election victory in December, 2019, and the controversial Brexit Bill was passed by the British Parliament, many of the issues about borders and bordering remain extremely relevant today. The current pandemic has not only revealed Britain’s dependence on migrant workers, especially in health and social care, but also exposed health inequalities among migrants and ethnic minorities. As the post-Brexit immigration landscape begins to emerge, the analysis of Nira Yuval Davis remains as pertinent as ever.

BGS has recently stopped its' systematic surveying and litho-printed geological map production. Instead we are undertaking integrated responsive mapping and 3D modelling in user-defined target areas using all available geospatial data (maps, boreholes, geophysics) assessed in a single workspace. The output will be 3D geological framework models that capture the understanding and interpretation of the survey geologist. These 3D geological maps (framework models) are used for both visualisation and analysis to enable management of the subsurface. Downstream the models can be populated with properties for process modelling. These models enhance corporate datasets and can be further edited, what would then result in newer improved versions being returned to the object store.

Nuclear medicine is great for viewing the roles of body organs. Medical imaging in nuclear medicine takes radioactive pharmaceuticals and studies their path of progress through patient's body. The principles of nuclear medicine are different from those of diagnostic radiology. The nuclear medicine can study the functioning of body and how it actually works. On the other hand, usage of different kinds of radiopharmaceuticals in nuclear medicine examinations can affect the dose rates. The purpose of our investigation was to estimate the effective dose from most common procedures, performed in nuclear medicine departments. We noted the injection radiation doses, which are used for diagnosis in nuclear medicine clinics. Later patient radiation doses were calculated, according to models recommended in ICRP 106.

Dynamic experiments cannot be observed easy on patients for determination of dosimetry in human PET studies dosimeter studies. In this study, it is aimed to estimate dose amount absorbed by some critical organs (e.g. bladder, lung, thyroid and ovary) by using a developed phantom. The phantom was improved as an original anthropomorphic whole body phantom which has been arranged with dynamic system. Therefore, organ absorbed doses by applying of fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose in PET studies and was observed by using the phantom, while TLD dosimeters were used for determination of internal absorbed doses. In medical physics, the accuracy of absorbed dose resulting from radiopharmaceutical application was determined by the medical internal radiation dose method that depends theoretically on the cumulated activity of the source organs and their mass. The MIRD calculation was also used for the study and comparatively evaluated with the experimental results which were collected by using improved phantom.

Accidental coincidences are one of the main sources of image degradation in positron emission tomography. It is possible to compensate for their degradation effects, but an accurate method to estimate the randoms rate is required. Two conventional methods are used for random rate estimation: the "singles rate" method and the "delayed window" method. In this work we propose a mathematical model that describes the process of accidental coincidence formation. By using it, we are able to predict the correct number of randoms as well as the estimations provided the singles rate and delayed window methods. The model is used to propose a novel estimation method: the "singles-prompt". The aim of this work is to assess the performance of the singles-prompt method and, specially, the model capabilities at several levels. The results agree with all the predictions of the model. In particular, the singles rate and delayed window estimations behave as described by the model and the singles-prompt method estimates the correct number of randoms regardless of the source distribution and total activities.

MOBILITY
Opis:
I explore how working-class Polish parents come to identify with their new localities despite their limited command of English, building just a few, but necessary bridges into the English-speaking community, e.g. by learning to decipher letters from children’s schools, or attending English masses in the weeks between Polish ones. Despite the apparent sparseness of these ties, parents who have lived in Bath or Bristol for a few years already feel quite strong attachments to the local area and are not interested in moving elsewhere in England. Feelings of wanting to stay put are enhanced by parents’ exhaustion after the period of intense mobility by all parties while only the husband was working in the UK. Simultaneously, parents – usually both from the same place in Poland - maintain close ties with their original home locality. This is the only place to which they would consider return. Different family members are attached to that Polish locality to different degrees, but it seems uncommon for one to persuade the rest of the family to go back.

MIGRATION
HOMELESSNESS
Opis:
This article looks at the issue of the dramatic raise of street homelessness among Polish men from the perspective of social anthropology looking at the relationship between structural constraints faced by Polish migrants and their own perception of the social world, their meaning-making practices, norms and values, behavioral patterns. As I will show, focusing just on structural and economic determinants not only offers simplistic and one-dimensional picture but it also fails to give an explanation and prediction what happens if these constraints and exclusionary policies are removed and homeless migrants gain same set of social rights as the rest of British and EU citizens (which in theory will happen in May 2011). An anthropological approach to the functions, roles and cultural meanings of homelessness, group bonds, masculinities, alcohol consumption, perception of the state and dominant society as voiced by homeless migrants I ‘hanged around’ with, reveals that structurally rejected, people with particular backgrounds reconstruct communities and form strong ties despite (or because of) a hostile, exclusionary and hegemonic social environment of the neoliberal order. Two conclusions are drawn from this analysis, empirical and theoretical: first taking both structural and cultural factors into account the levels of homeless among that group is going to rise, at least in London; second the set of cultural forms of behavior and social practices described in academic literature as the homo sovieticus syndrome (Wedel 1986, Sztompka 2000, Morawska 1998) proves not only valuable and resourceful in highly individualized, neoliberal and capitalistic society but may be in fact reinforced in new conditions being a productive – socially and culturally - counter-reaction to the neoliberal order of social life in the global city.

Opis:
This timely issue of Central and Eastern European Migration Review addresses the clear urgency of promoting empirical research focused on the realm of transnational experiences of family migrants from Poland. The main strength of the volume is a presentation of the four main pillars of the mobility processes, showcasing two crucial receiving countries of Polish contemporary family settlement abroad. More specifically, the qualitative studies gathered here are rooted in a multi-perspective approach with regard to the actors that they examine and cover both the relatively well-researched destination of the United Kingdom and the more ‘novel’ or ‘recent’ example of Norway as the receiving state, with the latter marked by family reunification mobility and considerable visibility of Poles in the ethnicised public discourses. The four main elements of the ‘mobility maze’ that the papers can help navigate reflect the subjects, handlers and agents of the Polish mobility. They are constituted by two generations of family migrants – parents and children – as well as schools/teachers and peer groups representing specific politics and practices of integration with the host society.

ETHNIC RELATIONS
Opis:
Researchers interested in integration have cautioned against ignoring issues of difference and inequality between groups in society. Research about the effects of contact between people from different ethnic communities suggests that outcomes can be mixed. Moreover, recent tensions about ‘British’ jobs have suggested the need to address competition between groups. In this paper I explore results from ESRC funded research with people who describe themselves as Polish and focus on views about people from other ethnic communities. I begin with an examination of the different ways in which being Polish was defined, who was seen as ‘other’ and discuss the significance of contestations over ethnicity. I examine the different ways in which people defined integration, discuss positive and negative views about members of other ethnic communities and then go on to examine the ways in which these views influenced the kinds of contacts people established. I suggest that assumptions about the values of people from other ethnic communities affected decisions about integration. Perceptions of other ethnic communities, including English ones, were also ascriptions of gender and class and challenge any simplistic notion of community or integration.

MIGRATION
MOBILITY
Opis:
This article is concerned with issues of travelling home in narratives of migration, drawing particular attention to the journey itself, which I examine as an increasingly important aspect of overall personal mobility. Freedom of circulation within the European Union made the borders inside the EU space less important to those who have the right of free movement. More recently, the expansion of the EU in 2004 and the availability of cheaper, more frequent and more accessible air travel connections, has allowed for new forms of mobility, based on more frequent return visits for Eastern Europeans, who have gone to work and live in Britain. In recent years, the “visiting friends and family” (VFR) mobility type has been the fastest growing segment of inbound air traffic in the UK, accounting for almost half of all trips within European Union (CAA Passenger Survey 2006). Drawing on the narratives and interview data with “new” Polish migrants in England, this paper argues that the social content of migrant mobility and visits home is of increasing importance. Many Polish migrants in England are now dependent on this form of mobility not only for sustaining social ties, but also in case of negotiation of their social status and displaying the achievements of migration. I argue, amongst other things, that the visit home is also a fundamental part of new mobility patterns and a crucial stage in the negotiation of migration itself. I am suggesting that the ways in which the journey home and the distance between England and Poland are encountered by Polish migrants, are critical to their understandings of migration. Because of the figurative proximity between Poland and England and “when desired” nature of their movement, Polish migrants are placed in a position of privilege and control regarding their mobility.

Radiation is energy, and it is widely used in a variety of fields, especially in industry and medical science. In hospital, ionizing radiation like X-ray is an extensive exam that has been used to help physicians to have a view into the body, without having to make a medical application. Computed tomography scan uses ionizing radiation, and it is a nearly perfect diagnostic unit that allows the physician to see the picture of the human body. Computed tomography scan technology has progressed over the years, and it is an increasingly powerful and effective unit in the diagnostic radiology. Exposure to ionizing radiation is known to increase the risk of cancer. The aim of this study was to assess the radiation exposure received during computed tomography in a sample representative of the current state of practice in adult patients.
