Opis:
The study area is located in Aydýncýk (ÝÇEL) area where Early Cambrian rocks are represented by the Hüdai Formation. The formation represents three different parts in the vertical sequence which has a thickness of approximately 830 metres. The basal part of the formation consists of a rhytmic alternation of horizontal laminated sandstone, ripple trough cross-laminated sandstone, mixed sandstone-shale, and rarely metashales. The middle part comprises dominantly metashales. The upper part is made up by an alternation of horizontal laminated sandstone, mixed sandstone-shale and rarely metashales. Vertical variations in the formation is caused by marine transgressious and regressious, and by fluctuations in sediment supply. Lower to middle parts of the formation characterize a fining-upward sequence, and middle to upper parts display a coarsening-upward sequence. In the Hüdai Formation, four lithofacies are recognized based on lithology and sedimentary structures. These are (1) horizontal laminated sandstone (predominantly quartzarenite) indicating deposition from tidal currents during the high velocity phases of tidal cycles; (2) ripple cross-laminated sandstone (predominantly quartzwacke) deposited in lower part of intertidal (sand-flat) environment; (3) mixed sandstone-shale revealing deposition in mid-intertidal flat environment; and (4) shale (or metashale) deposited mainly in upper intertidal (mudflat) environment.

Opis:
Miocene alluvial/fluvial-lacustrine deposits composed of three lignite successions (Lower, Middle, and Upper) are exposed in Soma coalfield located near the northern Aegean Sea coastline of the Western Anatolia. The total thickness of the coal successions is about 900 m, and they rest unconformably on the Mesozoic carbonate/siliciclastic basement rocks. Recognised lithofacies of coal successions have been arranged to fourteen facies assemblages and interpreted as environments.Lower Coal succession was deposited in an alluvial fan to plain and perennial forest mire system resulting in a subbituminous lignitic coal, in average 20 m thick. Freshwater carbonate-dominated Middle Coal succession, having lignite beds ranging from 0.5 to 2.5 m, was formed in floodplain environment, including shallow freshwater carbonate lakes and/or ponds, and frequently drying poor forest mires of an anastomosed river system. Volcanism-induced Upper Coal succession was deposited in fluvial channel, floodplain, and probably in allochthonous peat mires of a braided river system that rapidly got buried and/or eroded by volcaniclastic apron deposits, and culminated by large carbonate-dominated perennial shallow lakes. The Miocene coal successions were probably deposited in the fault-controlled karst-based palaeovalleys and lowlands of the intramountain palaeomorphology that were patterned by the Early Tertiary collision of the Eurasia and Anatolian plates. The coal successions was faulted by the extensionally tectonic regime and covered with Plio-Quaternary deposits.

Opis:
Bursa-Orhaneli lignite coalfield is located in the North-West of Turkey. This coalfield has three sectors: Burmu, Çivili, and Sagirlar, having similar stratigraphic sequences in the northwest of Bursa Province. The mined coal seam is Miocene of age, and its thickness varies between 1.10-14.50 m. The pre-Neogene rocks in the area are made up of Palaeozoic aged metamorphic schists and marbles, and Upper Cretaceous aged ophiolites. The Neogene formations of detrital rocks with basal conglomerates, coal bearing marl and tuffites are found at the base, and volcanic basalt tuffs and andesite lava flows, at the top. The post-Neogene sediments are Pleistocene aged gravels and Holocene alluvium. The deposit has been worked as an open-pit mine in the Burmu and Sagirlar sectors and is going to be worked by underground mining methods in the near future. The chemical analysis have shown that the percentage of water is 22.66-27.30%, ash 24.57-44.39%, volatile matter 18.52-29.44%, fixed carbon 23.87-29.52%, and total sulphur 1.84-2.64% in the original coal, and its calorific value is 2010-3032 kcal/kg, whereas the air dried coal is composed of 5.51-10.41% water, 26.99-54.18% ash, 21.83-35.49% volatile matter, 28.10-36.03% fixed carbon, and 2.42-3.06% total sulphur, with calorific value of 2483-3938 kcal/kg. The proven and workable lignite reserves are 60,877,079 and 47,308,406 tonnes respectively. Stripping and production operations are made by a dragline, excavators and trucks. Mined coal is used both in domestic heating and the Orhaneli thermic power plant, which has a capacity of 1x210 MW.

Despite the importance of the Paşalar fauna for the evolution and biogeography of Miocene mammals, few studies on its rodents have been published. In this paper a taxonomic analysis of the Paşalar rodents and the possible correlation that can be based on them are presented. Several rodent taxa, previously unknown from Paşalar are described. These include the cricetids Megacricetodon andrewsi sp. nov. and Democricetodon brevis (Schaub, 1925), the sciurids Spermophilinus bredai (Meyer, 1848) and Sciurinae indet., and the glirid Peridyromys lavocati sp. nov. The taxa previously described from Paşalar are: the ctenodactylid Sayimys cf. intermedius (Sen and Thomas, 1979), the cricetid Cricetodon pasalarensis (Tobien, 1978), the spalacid Pliospalax marmarensis Ünay, 1990 and the castorid cf. Chalicomys jaegeri Kaup, 1832. These determinations represent a reduction of the number of taxa recorded from the locality, as previous papers listed up to five sciurids. Only two sciurids and two glirids are recognized in this study. Mainly on the basis of the new cricetid records, it is possible to correlate the Paşalar fauna to late MN6.

Opis:
Cretaceous limestones from the basement of the Neogene Mut Basin are strongly sculptured by borings, including mainly clionid sponge borings Entobia ispp., bivalve borings Gastrochaenolites torpedo and G. lapidicus, the polychaete boring Caulostrepsis taeniola and Meandropolydora isp. The borings are replaced subsequently; as a rule the succession begins with C. taeniola and terminates with Entobia ispp. The discussed boring producers display various tolerance for light, energy and depth conditions, hence their succession may reflect environmental changes, related to marine transgression, proceeded upon rocky coast area. Since such a coast could be devoid of sedimentation for a long time, the possible reconstruction of relative sea-level change may be inferred exclusively from nonsedimentological criteria i.e. from the succession of endolithic borings. Therefore the borings may be employed as useful tool in sequence stratigraphic procedure.

In this study, 12 taxa from the Chlorophyta, Phaeophyta and Rhodophyta were collected from different depths at Gemlik-Karacaali and Erdek-Ormanlı. A total of 175 specimens from these divisions were used to determine Total Protein (TP), Total Soluble Carbohydrate (TSCH) and Chlorophyll a (Chl a), Chlorophyll b (Chl b), Chlorophyll c (Chl c), total carotenoid (Car) contents and Chl b/Chl a, Chl c/Chl a, Car/Chl a, Car/Chl b, Car/Chl c ratios. TP, TSCH and pigment contents varied significantly with respect to the algal taxa, stations and depth distribution. In addition, individual differences were important in all of the measured parameters. The maximum TP contents (0.94%–31.03%) were determined in some of the Rhodophyta. In some green seaweeds belonging to the genus Ulva L., the TP content was determined between 2.9%–28.1%. Lower TP contents were determined in Cystoseira barbata (Good) C. Agardh (1.1%–4.3%). In contrast to TP contents, TSCH values were very low; maximum TSCH were determined in Ulva species, as were protein contents. In conclusion, the variations in TP, TSCH and pigment in 12 taxa of macroalgae were analysed according to station, depth, and environment.

Opis:
The aim of the work was to determine the effect of iodinated salt on quantitative and qualitative changes of thiamine during thermal processing and storage of turkey meat products. As a variability of potential effect of potassium iodide, application of iodinated salt and collagen isolates impregnated or not with potassium iodide were investigated. It was found that during frying ground meat about 40% of total thiamine was destroyed. Cool and freeze storage contributes to further increase of the losses of both forms of thiamine with more unfavorable effect of cool storage causing the losses up to 28%. An addition of the salt iodinated with potassium iodide increases susceptibility of both free and bound thiamine to decomposition during frying and storage by about 6%. Application of the collagen preparation impregnated with potassium iodide or a mixture of collagen and iodinated salt lowers thiamine losses by, on average, 5% as compared to the losses in the presence of iodinated salt.

Opis:
W pracy scharakteryzowano właściwości proteolityczne preparatu enzymatycznego uzyskanego z trzustek indyczych oraz oceniono przydatność tych enzymów do degradacji skór wieprzowych. Hydrolizę enzymatyczną surowca prowadzono w środowisku o pH = 7,0, a następnie przedłużano ją o hydrolizę kwasową w pH = 3,2.
The study presents the proteolytic qualities of an enzymatic preparation obtained from turkey pancreas and the usefulness of enzymes for the degradation of pigskins. Enzymatic hydrolysis of the material was carried out at pH = 7.0, and, then, acid hydrolysis was conducted at pH = 3.2. The results indicated a high proteolytic activity of pancreas proteases towards the casein. Their activity towards collagen substrates was also observed. The efficiency of enzymatic hydrolysis of pigskins, expressed by the amount of freed hydroxyproline, free amine groups and protein, was several times higher than the efficiency of acid hydrolysis. Moreover, the proper selection of the process conditions (temperature, pH and material comminuting) significantly increases its efficiency. It may be concluded that the enzymes from turkey pancreas are characterized by a high proteolytic activity towards proteins from pigskins.

Opis:
Collecting over the last twenty years in sand and gravel quarries near Yulafli in European Turkey has yielded a substantial fauna of large mammals. The most significant of these for biochronology are well−preserved remains of the ursid Indarctos arctoides, the suid Hippopotamodon antiquus, and several rhino genera. They point to a late Vallesian (MN 10−equivalent) age. Several other taxa, of longer chronological range, are in good agreement with this dating. The Proboscidea include, besides the Eastern Mediterranean Choerolophodon, the Deinotherium + Tetralophodon association, commonly found in Europe, and the rare “Mastodon” grandincisivus, here reported for the first time in the Vallesian. The age of Yulafli shows that the large size of some taxa, such as Deinotherium (size close to that of D. gigantissimum) and Dorcatherium, does not always track chronology. The Yulafli fauna is close in composition and ecology to other localities in Turkish Thrace, and also shares several taxa unknown in Anatolia, especially Dorcatherium, with the North−Western European Province. It reflects a forested/humid landscape that extended in Vallesian times along the Aegean coast of Turkey, perhaps as far South as Crete, quite distinct from the open environments recorded at the same period in Greek Macedonia and Anatolia, and probably more like the central European one. Together with the establishment of a Tethys–Paratethys marine connection, this “Eastern Aegean Province” likely acted as an ecological barrier that hindered East−West migrations of open−country large mammals, such as bovids or long−limbed giraffes, and might have contributed to the differentiation of Ouranopithecus and Ankarapithecus.

Investigations were performed using 2 groups of turkeys Big-6 type turkeys during 16 - week rearing. Addition of copper in the form of chelate with lysine in the amount of 10 mg Cu-dm-3H2O was an experimental factor. The aim of the present study was to define the effect of copper, as a supplement to drinking water on body mass and on accumulation of mineral components in selected turkey tissues. Analysis of the obtained results has shown that a supplement of chelate caused an increase of the final body mass of the turkeys, but it did not considerably influence the mass of the analyzed tissues. It was found that the copper affected the increase of Cu, Zn and Fe contents, in all tissues studied. Livers were characterized by the highest Cu retention, whereas the least amounts of this element were accumulated in breast muscles of the birds. A long application of copper did not effect an excessive accumulation of this mineral component in kidneys and muscles of turkeys and did not pose a threat for the consumers' health, as the copper content in these tissues did not exceed the permissible norms (5 mg-kg-1; according to PN-A-86524:1994).
