Opis:
This study aimed to determine the performance of modified slow sand filter (SSF) media with blood clam shells (Anadara granosa) and activated carbon to remove turbidity, TSS, TDS, and FOG on the food court wastewater. The concentration of water pollutant parameters processed by SSF was determined based on Indonesia water quality standards, as well as knowing the optimum operational parameters of intermittent slow sand filter with Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The research data was processed using the Optimal type (custom) design which consisted of independent factors including the type of filter media, the addition of bacteria to the grease trap pre-treatment unit, and running time, as well as the research response in the form of the effectiveness of removing turbidity, TSS, TDS, and FOG. The reactor was operated intermittently (48 hours) for a maximum of 22 days and the concentration of pollutant parameters was calculated using the Standard Methods. The results of the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA, p<0.05) in the 2FI model of the study showed that there was a significant effect of all independent factors on the effectiveness of removing all water pollutant parameters. The most optimal operational parameters were achieved with the type of activated carbon media, the addition of Bacillus sp. in the grease trap pre-treatment unit in the amount of as much as 1%, and the detention time of 4 days, with the effectiveness of removing turbidity reaching 39.53%; TSS 45.25%; TDS 19.30%; FOG 61.35%.

Opis:
Turbidity is an important indicator of water quality in rivers, lakes, and coastal areas. Research on turbidity issues in these areas is significant not only for the development and utilization of water resources for aquaculture, tourism, and other purposes but also for assessing the level of silt (sand) in the river, allowing sediment alluvial to build up a bank of the river, and monitoring the degree of water corrosion in the bridge substructure. This allows for the building of an effective maintenance and conservation program for the bridge in response to climate change. Traditional methods have defined the turbidity of water in a local area, on a small scale. Interpolation errors of traditional methods for large areas may exceed over 20%. The use of remote sensing technology as Landsat-8 satellite images with a high geometric resolution of 30-meter multispectral channels allows us to estimate and distribute the water turbidity in a 30 × 30 m grid in detail. Using multi-temporal Landsat-8 data in 2014 and 2015 for modeling water turbidity of Tien and Hau rivers and coastal areas in South Vietnam, the obtained mean absolute error is approximately 20%, the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) does not exceed 10 NTU. The models have a high coefficient of efficiency ME, approximately 90% (ME = 0.862), and the correlation coefficient R stronger than 90%. This allows an overall assessment of changes in water flow velocity concerning the amount of sediment in the river.
Błędy interpolacji tradycyjnych metod do dużych obszarów mogą przekraczać 20%. Zastosowanie technologii teledetekcji w postaci zdjęć satelitarnych Landsat-8 o wysokiej rozdzielczości geometrycznej 30-metrowych kanałów wielospektralnych pozwala na szczegółowe oszacowanie i rozmieszczenie zmętnienia wody w siatce 30 × 30 m. Wykorzystując wieloczasowe dane Landsat-8 z lat 2014 i 2015 do modelowania zmętnienia wody rzek Tien i Hau oraz obszarów przybrzeżnych w południowym Wietnamie, uzyskany średni błąd bezwzględny wynosi około 20%, a średni błąd kwadratowy (RMSE) nie przekracza 10 NTU. Modele mają wysoki współczynnik efektywności ME, około 90% (ME = 0,862), a współczynnik korelacji R jest wyższy niż 90%, co stwarza możliwość dokonania ogólnej oceny zmian prędkości przepływu wody w odniesieniu do ilości osadów w rzece.

The use of nanoparticles in fuels provides new opportunities for modification of fuel properties, which may affect the operational parameters of engines, in particular the efficiency and fuel consumption. The paper presents comparison of compression ignition engine performance fuelled with neat diesel and nano-diesel. Alumina (Al2O3) was used as nanoparticles. Surface-active substances, including Span 80 surfactant, as well as water admixture were used to improve the stability of the produced fuel. Measurements of the thermal conductivity and dynamic viscosity of the produced mixtures were conducted. In this study was used naturally aspirated, water cooled, four-stroke diesel engine. Addition of Al2O3 nanoparticles result in 4% reduced fuel consumption, addition of TiO2 nanoparticles result in 10% reduced fuel consumption with respect to neat diesel fuel.

Development of new and modification of existing chemicals, which act not only as binders, but also provide increased retention of fiber and other pulp components on the paper machine grid, accelerate pulp dehydration, and provide special properties (moisture resistance, heat resistance, improvement of other technical characteristics of paper and cardboard) of paper and cardboard, is an important and urgent task of chemical technology and ecology. This paper presents results of the corn starch modification with epoxypropyltriethanolammonium chloride, hexamethylolmelamine and hexamethylenetetramine. Modified starches provide the necessary strength indicators of cardboard from waste paper and low turbidity of wastewater. The obtained starches can be used in mills that use low-quality waste paper for the production of cardboard and paper products with the aim of saving fiber, reducing wastewater pollution and as a result reducing the negative impact on the environment.

Opis:
The presence of natural organic matter (NOM) in water has a significant influence on water treatment processes. Water industries around the world consider coagulation/flocculation to be one of the main water treatment methods. The chief objective of conventional coagulation-based processes is to reduce the turbidity of the water and to remove natural organic matter (NOM) present in solutions. The aim of this paper is to present some developments in terms of improved coagulation for the drinking water of Sidi Yacoub treatment plant located in the Northwest of Algeria. The experiments involved studying the effects of the application of two coagulants (ferric chloride and aluminium sulphate) on the removal of turbidity and natural organic matter from water by measuring the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and the UV absorbance at 254 nm. The results showed that the rate of turbidity removal increased from 81.3% to 88% when ferric chloride was applied and from 89.91% to 94% when aluminium sulphate was applied. For NOM removal, the maximum removal rates of COD and UV254 were 48% and 52%, respectively, in the case of ferric chloride. These rates increased to 59% and 65% after optimised coagulation. When aluminium sulphate was used, the rate of removal in water increased from 43% to 55% for COD and from 47% to 59% for UV254 after optimised coagulation. The combination of the two coagulants at equal dosage shows a slight improvement in the values obtained after optimisation, both in terms of turbidity and the NOM.

Nowadays there is a search for new alternatives to replace harsh and expensive chemical methods to wastewater treatments. The common methods include the usage of chemicals that negatively affect the environment and the human health. The cladodes of Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill have a great potential for use in innovative, cheap, renewable and eco-friendly water treatment due to their flocculant properties. In this work, different water treatments including fresh cladodes, lyophilized cladodes and the material obtained through mucilage extraction were tested. The turbidity of the water was measured, and it was concluded that the use of 60 g of small pieces of fresh cut cladodes was the method with the best results, reaching 4 NTU of turbidity. It confirmed the ability of O. ficus-indica (L.) Mill cladodes to promote the flocculation of clay in water, enabling to turn the unused material waste into a useful raw material.

Opis:
This research applied a machine learning technique for predicting the water quality parameters of Kelantan River using the historical data collected from various stations. Support Vector Machine (SVM) was used to develop the prediction model. Six water quality parameters (dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), and suspended solids (SS)) were predicted. The dataset was obtained from the measurement of 14 stations of Kelantan River from September 2005 to December 2017 with a total sample of 148 monthly data. We defined 3 schemes of prediction to investigate the contribution of the attribute number and the model performance. The outcome of the study demonstrated that the prediction of the suspended solid parameter gave the best performance, which was indicated by the highest values of the R2 score. Meanwhile, the prediction of the COD parameter gave the lowest score of R2 score, indicating the difficulty of the dataset to be modelled by SVM. The analysis of the contribution of attribute number shows that the prediction of the four parameters (DO, BOD, NH3-N, and SS) is directly proportional to the performance of the model. Similarly, the best prediction of the pH parameter is obtained from the utilization of the least number of attributes found in scheme 1.

The current study presents results related to the influence of an electromagnetic field (EMF) on synthetic water with $Al_2Si_2O_5(OH)_4$ (represented by Turbidity). The impact of an EMF as the only factor or as an intensifying element in stainless steel packing systems that limits pollutant concentrations in the treated water was analyses. The system that combined simultaneously stainless steel filling was most efficient. The electromagnetic treatment unit was designed and constructed for testing the treatment of syntheses water having turbidity. The influence of two variables on the efficiency of contaminant elimination during the function of the electromagnetic treating unit was checked. A significant dependence between the kind of system used reactor diameter and number of electrical coil windings were observed. The results showed that the PH values remain constant with EMF. The performance of the unit is determined by turbidity, the result shows greatest efficiency removal with 99.99% at the minimum diameter (2.54 cm), 99.99% in three reactors with three different numbers of coil turns.

Opis:
This study aimed to determine the effects of three different high molecular weight (HMW) flocculants (anionic, cationic and non-ionic flocculants) on the fine particles removal from natural stone (foid-bearing rock) processing plant wastewater at alkaline pH conditions. The test results were investigated in terms of turbidity values depending on pH of the medium, flocculant concentration and time (0–60 min). According to the results obtained, the turbidity values of the wastewater in the absence of the flocculants were pH dependent and decreased as the pH increased, resulted in the minimum turbidity values at pH 12. In the presence of the flocculants, the pH depended turbidity removal efficiencies varied with flocculant type, flocculant concentration and time. The best results were obtained at highly alkaline pH values (pH 12) with the turbidity removal efficiency of ≤99% in the presence of non-ionic flocculant. In the case of anionic and cationic flocculants, the minimum turbidity values were also obtained at pH 12 with turbidity removal efficiencies over 90%.

Flood monitoring of wetlands and floodplains is a new issue in remote sensing, as compared to the mapping of open water bodies. The method based on spectral water indices, calculated on the basis of green, red and shortwave infrared bands, is one of the most popular methods for the recognition of a water body in multispectral images. The recently introduced Sentinel-2 satellite can provide multispectral images with high spatial resolution. This new data set is potentially of great importance for flood mapping, due to its free access and the frequent revisit capabilities. In this study, three popular water indices (Modified Normalized Difference Water Index, Normalized Difference Pond Index and Normalized Difference Turbidity Index) were used. The efficiency of the proposed method was tested experimentally using the Sentinel-2 image for the Kampinos National Park in Poland. The experiment compared four extraction algorithms including three based on individual water indicators and one on a combination of them. The results showed that the 10-metre false colour composite produced significantly improved the recognition of flooding in wetland areas by comparison with single spectral water indices. In this way, flooded wetlands were mapped based on the Sentinel-2 data set for the years 2017-2018.

Bath gray water organoleptically did not appear to be significantly contaminated liquid. However, in order to re-use them, they need proper treatment. When recirculated in a household, they cannot pose a threat to human life. Based on their appearance, it seems that the solution to the problem is the use of cartridges filter. The article presents the results of the filtration of gray water from the bath through the filtration system with a housing double stage polypropylene-carbon filter FCCA-STO and to determine the impact of individual filter layers on wastewater treatment, tests were carried out on a single polypropylene FCPS10 and carbon FCCA filtration cartridge. The aim of the study was to determine the suitability of the selected housing filter cartridges for the treatment of bathing gray water for their reuse. For the tests were used natural bathing gray water from a two-family building inhabited by seven people. Wastewater were fed to the filter with a constant flow rate of 0.1 dm3·s–1. The assessment of the work of the filters based on parameters such as: COD, BOD5, suspension, dry residue, decay and turbidity. The conducted tests have shown a slight improvement in most of the quality parameters of gray water after filtration through selected housing cartridge filters. Only for turbidity, the reduction in the value of the pollution indicator was noticeable. The cartridge filters used in tests, acted like ordinary mechanical filtration cartridges. For the considered gray water, the use of analyzed cartridge filters can only be used for their initial purification.

This paper investigated the problems and impacts of transient flow in pipeline systems due to pump power failure. The impact of different protection devices was presented to assure surge protection for the pipeline system. A model via Bentley HAMMER V8.0 Edition was employed to analyse and simulate hydraulic transients in the pipeline system, and protection alternatives were studied. Surge protection included using only an air vessel, using an air vessel and two surge tanks, and employing five air vessels and vacuum breaker. The obtained results for pressures, heads, and cavitation along the pipeline system were graphically presented for various operating conditions. Using five air vessels with vacuum breaker valve as surge protection proved to be more effective and economical against pump power failure. Changing the flow density did not have a significant impact on the pressures. For protection with an air vessel; it was concluded that the value 40% of the original diameter for inlet pipe diameter of air vessel, and the value of 2/3 of original pipe diameter were critical values for the transient pressures. Cast iron pipes proved to be the best pipe material for all studied volumes of the air vessel. For protection with an air vessel and two surge tanks; as the inlet pipe diameters increased the maximum pressures increased and the minimum pressures decreased. Regression analyses were performed obtaining equations to predict the pressures according to the inlet pipe diameter, the area of surge tank, and the pipe diameter.

The transformations of river channels as a result of human activity may reflect the level of anthropogenic pressure. Recorded in macroscale, they are indicators of transformations for the larger part of the river basin, while in the microscale they usually refer to its fragment. The human activity that has the strongest influence on the fluvial processes, including suspended sediment transport, is the interference in the riverbed, such as hydrotechnical construction (create of water stages) or transformation of the river banks (concreting of the river banks). The aim of the research was to determine the impact of bridges on the process of water turbidity in the longitudinal profile of large lowland rivers. The research area was the lower reach of Vistula – bridge profiles: Torun, Bydgoszcz, Kiezmark (Poland) and bridge profile on Sukhona – a tributary of the Northern Dvina River near the city of Veliky Ustyug (Russia – Arkhangelsk Oblast). The research conducted in the years 2013–2017 included the measurements of water turbidity in the cross-sections of the above-mentioned rivers. The determinations of water turbidity were carried out using traditional (granulometry analysis) and nephelometric methods (devices: LISST-25X and turbidimeter). The impact of bridges on the variability of water turbidity was determined. The obtained results were related to the variability of depth conditions (bathymetric measurements) and hydrodynamics in the cross-section profile of the channel.

In this study, we investigated the impact of adding solutions with different potassium and sodium concentrations on dispersible clay, water retention characteristics, air permeability, and soil shrinkage behaviour using two agricultural soils from Switzerland with different clay content but similar organic carbon to clay ratio. Three different solutions (including only Na, only K, and the combination of both) were added to soil samples at three different cation ratio of soil structural stability levels, and the soil samples were incubated for one month. Our findings showed that the amount of readily dispersible clay increased with increasing Na concentrations and with increasing cation ratio of soil structural stability. The treatment with the maximum Na concentration resulted in the highest water retention and in the lowest shrinkage capacity. This was was associated with high amounts of readily dispersible clay. Air permeability generally increased during incubation due to moderate wetting and drying cycles, but the increase was negatively correlated with readily dispersible clay. Readily dispersible clay decreased with increasing K, while readily dispersible clay increased with increasing K in Iranian soil (Part I of our study). This can be attributed to the different clay mineralogy of the studied soils (muscovite in Part I and illite in Part II).

The aim of the research is to determine the impact of hydrotechnical structures on the continuity of suspended sediments transport. The research area is the Lower Vistula River with a single dam – Wloclawek, operating since the 1970s. The research included direct measurements of water turbidity in 2013–2016 in characteristic cross-sections of the Vistula River, using commonly used methods. The LISST-25X laser grain composition measurement sensor was also used to collect data, enabling determination of grain size of the suspended sediments. However, on the selected section of the river, modelling of momentary transport of suspended sediments using GIS tools was carried out. There was a significant dynamics of sediments transport in the longitudinal profile of the river, in relation to the diversity of hydrological and morphological conditions of the Vistula River. The impact of Wloclawek Reservoir on water turbidity reduction was determined. The balance of transport of suspended material was related to the processes of erosion and sediment accumulation below the dam. The functioning of the Wloclawek Reservoir in the current system (as a single dam) has a significant impact on sediment transport, which directly determines the course of fluvial processes across the entire Lower Vistula (from km 675 to the estuary) and indirectly in the coastal zone of the Baltic Sea.
