Opis:: Celem rozmowy jest przybliżenie czytelnikom postaci Jana Maszczyszyna, pisarza polskiego pochodzenia mieszkającego w Australii, a także prezentacja jego sztandarowego dzieła: Trylogii Solarnej. Pierwsza część rozmowy dotyczy doświadczeń czytelniczych i pisarskich autora, a także zawiera krótką charakterystykę steampunku – konwencji, w której Maszczyszyn tworzy. Poruszony tutaj został temat retrofuturystyki, wiążący się z nostalgicznymi i melancholijnymi sposobami rozważań o XIX wieku. Druga część rozmowy została poświęcona Trylogii Solarnej i niektórym jej wątkom. Pisarz opowiada o źródłach, z których czerpał wiedzę niezbędną do kreacji uniwersum, a także samego sposobu jego tworzenia. Autor opowiada również o teoriach naukowych, które stały się inspiracją do stworzenia uniwersum Trylogii…, oraz o powiązanych z tym tematem sposobach naukowej interpretacji świata.
The aim of this interview is to familiarize readers with Jan Maszczyszyn, a writer of Polish origin living in Australia, and with his flagship work, Solar Trilogy. The first part of the interview concerns his experiences as reader and author, and also contains a brief description of steampunk, which is his literary mode of choice. This part of the interview is also about retrofuturism, associated with nostalgic and melancholic ways of thinking about the nineteenth century. The second part of the interview is devoted to Solar Trilogy and some of its motifs. Here Maszczyszyn talks about the sources on which he drew in the creation of the fictional universe of the Trilogy as well as the method of creating it. He also talks about the scientific theories that inspired the creation of that universe and about the scientific interpretations of the world related to it.

Opis:: This article concerns the conceptualization of speech and language in Sienkiewicz’s Trilogy. Certain methods of conceptualizing speech, language or words are timeless, they represent a durable in terms of culture, mental tissue of language. In the novel by Sienkiewicz, the conceptualization of speech and language reflects the typical for Sarmatian mentality skills and noble duties: fighting efficiency and the oratory ability. Especially strongly and permanently rooted in the Polish language is the metaphor of a dispute as war, and within it the language as a weapon, especially sword. The proper thinking in the nobility era is especially clearly reflected by the metonymic statement: prisoner–language, reflecting utilitarianism of war, and a series of farm metaphors and comparisons, such as milling with a tongue or turning the tongue as the axis of the carriage wheels. References of this type are readable even today, however they do not have now this contemporary freshness and immediacy of references, but rather seem anachronistic in the modern urban world. Durable in everyday language today is the phraseology binding language and speaking with emotion, expressing itself for example in such collocations as: bite your tongue or forget one’s tongue. Typical of nobility is also, embodied especially in the character of Onufry Zagłoba, positive valorization of noble multispeech, as a testimony of eloquence and erudition.

Opis:: Victor Shklovsky’s Third Factory is the third part of the so-called “autobiographical trilogy”, which was first published in 1926, i.e. after Shklovsky’s return from abroad, following his unwilling emigration. As a literary work, it is not easily classified. In part, it is a memoir of the three “factories” that influenced Shklovki’s development both as a writer and a witness of his time. In addition to fictional and biographical elements, Third Factory also includes anecdotes about writers, literary critics and theorists (e.g. Roman Jakobson, Yuri Tynianov, Boris Eikhenbaum, and Y. Polivanov) as well as letters and memoirs, which are published here in a Polish translation for the first time.

Opis:: Henryk Sienkiewicz, polski noblista, jest uznawany za mistrza słowa i wizjonera. Jego dzieła obrazowo przedstawiają przeszłość Polski. Krytycy literaccy i biografowie nie są zgodni co do pochodzenia słynnego pisarza – czy w jego żyłach płynęła tatarska krew? W artykule przedstawiono problematykę genealogii Henryka Sienkiewicza oraz wybrane wątki tatarskie zawarte w jego dziełach. Według A. Korzińskiej w Hani i Selimie Mirzy Sienkiewicz ukazał Tatarów jako wyznawców islamu, którzy zasymilowali się z Polakami. Natomiast w Niewoli tatarskiej przedstawił obraz islamu wrogiego, zaś samych Tatarów jako ludzi dzikich i bezwzględnych. W Trylogii niezwykle istotnymi postaciami byli Tatarzy: Tuhaj-bej oraz Azja Tuhajbejowicz. W dyskusji nad pochodzeniem H. Sienkiewicza istotne są wyniki badań genetycznych, jakie przeprowadził prawnuk noblisty – Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz, uczestniczący w projekcie Genographic.
Henryk Sienkiewicz, an epic writer, winner of the Noble Prize in Literature (1905), is widely celebrated for his masterly stories about some of the most turbulent events in Polish history. His biographers and literary scholars disagree over his family roots. Was he a scion of Tatars? The present article examines Sienkiewicz’s genealogy and Tatar threads in his novels. A. Korzińska claims that Hania i Selim [Hania and Selim] tells a story of assimilated Tatars, whereas Niewola Tatarska [Enslaved by Tatars] shows them as ruthless savages. Two major protagonists in Sienkiewicz’s famous Trilogy, Tuhaj-bej and Azja Tuhajbejowicz, are Tatars. Genetic research, conducted by the writer’s greatgrandson, Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz (Genographic Project), is an important contribution to the discussion on Henryk Sienkiewicz’s descent.

Opis:: In this paper, the Ukrainian trilogy by Józef Łobodowski has been interpreted as a historical novel, in which the described events took place in the Kuban region in the period between 1918 and 1922. The history of the Bolshevik revolution and the Civil War in the Caucasus area of Russia has been presented in a vivid story, which was inspired by the author’s personal experiences. The protagonist of the trilogy is the author’s own alter ego. The author’s participation in the discussed events significantly influenced the artistic form of the novel. The work possesses the features of a reportage novel, with its inherent verism, a trend towards a faithful depiction of life during the Russian Civil War, as well as elements of journalism that correspond to the writer’s journalistic activity. The reportage characteristics of the trilogy did not hinder the author from complying in his narration with the pattern of Sienkiewicz’s novel W pustyni i w puszczy (In Desert and Wilderness). In this way, the Ukrainian trilogy became a work with an original structure, in which the author also objectified his own emigrational experiences.

Jako przykład powieściowego, wieloaspektowego,zmieniającego się historycznie i kulturowo obrazu ojcostwa posłużyła trylogia Małgorzaty Kalicińskiej, w której skład wchodzą książki Dom nad rozlewiskiem, Powroty nad rozlewiskiem i Miłość nad rozlewiskiem. Cel. Celem artykułu jest zrekonstruowanie obrazu ojcostwa wykreowanego w powieściach o charakterze rodzinnej sagi, z dominującą pozycją narracji pamiętnikarskiej prowadzonej z kobiecej perspektywy. Materiały i metody. Artykuł ma charakter opisowo-analityczny, wykorzystuje narzędzia charakterystyczne dla pracy filologa i historyka literatury oraz pedagoga (m.in. elementy kulturowej teorii literatury, historii rodziny i wychowania, eksplikację tekstu). Wyniki. Z analizy trzech powieści Małgorzaty Kalicińskiej (w tym szczególnie konstrukcji postaci ojców) oraz gruntownej kwerendy literatury przedmiotu poświęconej kategorii ojcostwa wynika, że autorka mazurskiej sagi uchwyciła obraz męskiego rodzicielstwa w jego różnorodnych odmianach. Na tle historii rodu przedstawionego w perspektywie patriotycznej, osiadłego w północnej części ziem polskich, obok wyraźnie zarysowanych bohaterek kobiecych, pisarka umieściła portrety kilku mężczyzn, których ojcostwo, przeżywane na tle przemian społecznych i kulturowych, miało odmienny charakter.
Introduction. The article introduces a typology of styles of fatherhood, primarily from a pedagogical and cultural perspective, and presents selected creations of fatherhood in the literary space. An example of a fictional, multifaceted, historically, and culturally transforming image of fatherhood is the trilogy by Małgorzata Kalicińska: House by the Backwater, Returns the Backwater and Love over the Backwater. Aim. The aim of the work is to reconstruct the image of fatherhood created in the family saga novels, with a dominant position of the female memoir narrative. Materials and methods. The article is descriptive and analytical in nature, it uses materials characteristic to the work of a philologist and a literary historian as well as to an educator (including elements of cultural theory of literature, family history and upbringing, explication of the text). Results. The analysis of three novels by Małgorzata Kalicińska (including particularly the construction of the characters of fathers) and a profound query of the subject literature devoted to the category of fatherhood, show that the author of the Masurian saga captured the image of male parenthood in its different varieties. On the background of the history of a lineage, presented as Polish patriots who settled in the northern part of the Polish lands, the author portrayed, next to some clearly outlined female heroines, several men whose fatherhood, against the background of cultural and social transformations, had different characters.

W omawianych powieściach przeważają fabuły oparte na modelu śledztwa dziennikarskiego i dominuje styl dziennikarski. Badaczki wskazują, że toruńskie kryminały bazują na „pakcie topograficznym”, któremu towarzyszy „słaby” pakt autobiograficzny; zwracają też uwagę na zabiegi Małeckiego i Woźniaka podsycające poczytność ich utworów, m.in. gry intertekstualne i aluzje, co znajduje odzwierciedlenie w „geopoetyce odbioru” i buduje topograficznie zaangażowaną wspólnotę interpretacyjną. Podkreślają jednak rolę nieco zapomnianej trylogii Głuchowskiego (zwłaszcza pierwszej powieści) w kreowaniu „morderczego Torunia”. Według autorek fikcja Głuchowskiego jest nie tylko najbardziej oryginalna, ale też najbardziej aktualna. Artykuł dowodzi, że kryminalne trylogie miejskie, kreujące narracyjną tożsamość Torunia, zdążyły już wytworzyć odrębną przestrzeń na literackiej mapie polskich „kryminalnych miast”.
The authors, using the methodology of semiotics, geopoetics and comparative studies, conduct a detailed analysis of Toruń’s “topographical fiction” in local crime trilogies by Piotr Głuchowski, Robert Małecki and Marcel Woźniak, which are treated in this article as part of a global literary trend called “murderous cities”. In the examined examples, journalistic investigations and journalistic style prevail. The authors assume that these novels are based on “topographical pact” which is accompanied by a “weak” autobiographical pact. Despite the popularity of Małecki’s and Woźniak’s stories enhanced by the writers themselves, e.g. via intertextual allusions, which is reflected in the ‘geopoetics of reception’ and which creates a topographically engaged interpretative community, the authors emphasize the role of Głuchowski’s novels (especially the first one) in the creation of the “murderous Torun”. According to the authors, Głuchowski’s fiction is not only the most original, but also the most actual. This paper shows that urban crime trilogies which develop the narrative identity of Toruń have already established a separate space on the literary map of Polish urban crime fiction.

Opis:: For the past fifty years Maria and Andrzej Szypowski have delighted us with their magnificent publications, many of which are about Warsaw. The first in a series of books inviting the reader to visit the oldest part of the city is the album Gdy wchodzisz w progi Katedry... (As You Enter the Cathedral...). The successive “Warsaw” publication – Gdy wchodzisz na Stare Miasto... (As You Enter the Old Town...) – reminds us that the year 2000 marked the twentieth anniversary of the introduction of the Warsaw Old Town onto the UNESCO World Heritage List. A following volume in the series in question is entitled Gdy wchodzisz na Nowe Miasto... (As You Enter the New Town...). The inimitable style of all the publications has been achieved by combining outstanding and precise information with lavish illustrations, and by presenting not merely historical monuments or the story of their reconstruction but also by depicting the connections between Old Warsaw and the life of the town’s residents. Extraordinary skill and remarkable sensitivity are required to convey the local atmosphere by resorting to word and image. The three volumes have reappeared under the joint title: Trylogia Staromiejska (The Old Town Trilogy). Issued in a smaller and more convenient format, they are available in a decorative box and accompanied by a supplement – Tablice Pamięci (Memory Tables). This fusion of particular parts of the series into a whole produces an ever more distinct awareness of impressive variety and an excellent selection of illustrations composed not only of photographs but also numerous reproductions of engravings, paintings and drawings. Many photographs have been published for the first time. Compared with earlier iconography, they depict transformations affecting space and architecture, as well as the daily life of this most ancient fragment of Warsaw.

Ukazane zostały specyficzne cechy współczesnej rosyjskojęzycznej fanfikcji, będącej syntezą dwóch tradycji fan fiction – zachodniej i rosyjskiej. Dodatkowo artykuł jest próbą zapoznania polskiego odbiorcy z tradycją rosyjską, która powstawała niezależnie od zachodniej.
The purpose of this article is to present ways of reception of Polish literary classics by an average recipient of Polish culture in the framework of Russian-language fan fiction community. The text shows specific features of the contemporary Russian fan fiction, which is a synthesis of two fan fiction traditions – Western and Russian. In addition, this article is also an attempt to introduce the Russian tradition, which arose independently of the Western one, to a Polish audience.
