Opis:
The objective of the study was to ascertain the presence of complement binding antibodies against T. vaginalis, T. tenax and hominis in the blood of women with chronic simultaneous (two species) trichomoniasis, and a comparison of the dynamics of antibody formation in the blood of women with one species trichomoniasis. The determinations were made prior to and following the treatment with Fasigyn, in hope to obtain additional data on antigene properties of trichomonas parasites of human organism. The test for complement binding was made for 144 women, 84 of them simultaneously infected with two of the three species of Trichomonas mentioned above and 60 with one. It has been found that in the former the complement binding antibodies attain higher concentrations (except antibodies against T. hominis), and following the Fasigyn treatment in all the cases they return to the normal level later than in respective monospecific trichomoniasis. The highest concentrations of the antibodies, both against T. vaginalis and T. tenax have been found in women with simultaneous trichomoniasis of urogenital system and oral cavity. Lower concentrations of the antibodies against both these species of Trichomonas have been found in women with simultaneous trichomoniasis of both urogenital system and intestine or both intestine and oral cavity. This can be accounted for by a dose antigene relationship between T. vaginalis and T. tenax, and a much more distant relationship of both these species on the one hand and T. hominis on the other.

Opis:
Introduction: At present, the gynaecologists have been increasingly frequently switching from vaginal biocoenosis assessment towards cervical cytology results to obtain information on the type of infection. Exfoliative cervical cytology is a screening test for dysplastic intraepithelial lesions and ectocervical cancers. One should emphasize however that one of the four parts of the new Bethesda classification specifies such inflammatory lesions as: Trichomonas vaginalis, Candida, Actinomyces, Chlamydia, cellular changes consistent with HSV infection and changes of bacterial flora. The gynaecologists however may perform vaginal biocoenosis assessment individually and diagnose its abnormalities in a relatively short timeframe. Conclusions: Lack of 100% correlation between the vaginal biocoenosis test and cytological result according to the Bethesda system means that assessment of vaginal microflora in phase-contrast microscopy should not be abandoned. Purpose: To analyse the association between lesions revealed during vaginal biocoenosis assessment in correlation to lesions described in the studies dedicated to cytological assessment of ectocervical smear. Material and methods: The study group included 1991 female patients scheduled for the follow-up cytological screening in a gynaecological office. Patients underwent gynaecological examination covering external areas, colposcopy, vaginal pH measurement, sampling for vaginal biocoenosis assessment purposes and cytological sampling. Results: It was demonstrated that diagnostic conformity for Candida sp accounted for only 17.2%, changes of bacterial flora for only 4% and – in the case of Trichomonas vaginalis - for only 3.9%. According to observations, bacterial infections and candidiases have been more frequently diagnosed during vaginal biocoenosis examining comparing to cytological screening, whereas infections with Trichomonas vaginalis have been more frequently diagnosed in cytological screening. Conclusions: Lack of 100% correlation between the vaginal biocoenosis test and cytological result according to the Bethesda system means that assessment of vaginal microflora in phase-contrast microscopy should not be abandoned.

Opis:
The occurrence of trichomonads in oral cavity of HIV patients is not well known. HIV patients often suffer from oral lesions (candidiosis, advanced caries) and it remains unclear if any oral parasites can affect that, therefore the aim of the study was verification of species that can occur in HIV patients” oral cavity. Diagnosis of oral trichomonads can be performed by conventional methods (microscopic observation of wet and stained preparations and cultivation) but these are time consuming and insufficient for proper species differentiation, therefore in order to detect and identify species of parasites precisely, molecular methods such as PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) and sequencing of its product, were applied. 54 HIV patients (18 females and 36 males at the age of 20-54) were examined. All of them were addicted to intravenous drugs for at least 6 years. Saliva, smears and spittle samples were collected and used for cultivation, preparations and molecular diagnosis. For PCR amplification a pair of primers (T1 and T2) specific for ITS 1 — 5.8 SrRNA — ITS 2 region was designed. The oral trichomonads were detected in saliva samples of 3 HIV patients; these were males at the age of 25, 27 and 44. The identification of species by PCR and sequencing of the PCR products showed the trichomonads belonging to Trichomonas tenax. Infection of HIV patients’ oral cavity caused by T. tenax is rather related with inflammatory processes than with the immunosuppression of these patients but should be considered as a potential factor in pathogenesis of oral disorders in immunosuppressed patients.

Twelve strains of T. vaginalis were tested for their sensitivity to dessication at room temperature. Each of them, in the quantity of 0.5 cm³ of 36 hrs old culture (containing 2.5 mln cells) was placed in 5 sterilized tubes containing 2:5 cm³ of: sterilized Roiron medium, urine, 0.9% NaCl, tap water and distilled water. After shaking, the suspension of Trichomonas of each tube in the quantity of 0.15 cm³ was placed on depression slides. The slides were then placed in sterilized, not tightly covered Petri dishes, which were kept at room temperature. The suspension of 3 slides was examined under microscope and inoculated on Roiron medium prior to complete dessication. The same procedure was followed with respect to the fourth slide but only after the suspension had, dried. The suspension remaining in the tube (2.4 cm³) served as control. The experiment showed that in a drop of 0.9% NaCl, urine and Roiron medium, Trichomonas remains active for 120 min. When transferred to Roiron medium within that time, Trichomonas reproduces in a normal way which was not observed after a transfer from the suspension dried up. In a drop of water Trichomonas loses its ability to reproduce within a time shorter than 120 min. The results speak in favour of a possibility of a non-sexual infection with Trichomonas.

The aim of this study was to assess the occurrence of Trichomonas tenax in individuals with periodontal disease and also to check the correlation between the occurrence of protozoan and a kind of periodontal disease, bleeding index and dental plaque index. The study involved 77 individuals aged 22-77 years (47 women and 30 men). Culture revealed flagellate Trichomonas tenax. The incidence of trichomonal infection was 32%. In spite of using two different media no Entamoeha gingivalis was found. There was no significant dependence between the frequency of occurrence of T. tenax and age, sex or smoking. There was a correlation between the occurrence of T. tenax and the amount of dental plaque (correlation index=0.3; p=0.06) and there was also a statistical dependence between the occurrence of T. tenax and a kind of periodontal disease (correlation index=0.3; p=0.02).

The research was done in the dermatological laboratory of Bytom Hospital No 2 in the years 1979-1983. 31 842 women were examined at the age 16 to 82. Samples were taken from urethra and neck of the uterus with sterylized oese. Both direct slides in 0,9 % NaCl solution and permanent slides were made. The latter were dyed by means of Gram's method in order to establish identity of C. albicans and by means of Giemsa's method to identity T. vaginalis. During 5 years the cases of trichomonadosis and candidosis recorded in the years of 1982 and 1983 were the most numerous. Seasonal fluctuation of trichomonadosis in 1980 and 1983 years and of candidosis in 1970, 1980, 1983 are also presented.
