Opis:
The review aims at explaining the role of larvae of tissue helminthes in suppression of protective responses of the host during xenotransplantation. We analyse the influence of invasion in the host by larvae of tissue helminths on the development of the graft against host reaction. The role of secrets and excrets of parasites in suppression of protective responses of the host is clarified at allotransplantation. The author considers the nature of immunodepressive components generated with larvae of helminthes in preventing response of the graft against host reaction. The role of corticosteroids and eicosanoids, secreted by parasites, in suppression of immune responses of the host is estimated at allotransplantation.

The present short note deals with atypical specimens of the digeneans, collected from fish Leuciscus idus caught in the Vistula mouth, and earlier described (Rokicki 1975) as Asymphylodora kubanicum (Issaitschikoff, 1923) Markewitsch, 1951. The reexamination of these specimens indicated that they represent the species Parasymphylodora parasquamosa Kulakova, 1972. This is a new digenean species in the parasitic fauna of Poland.

Opis:
Raised shell projections on the inner shell walls that form pits on the internal moulds of Devonian ammonoids have been known for several decades. New specimens from Morocco reveal novel details of these structures; most, if not all, of which consist of a capsule of ammonoid shell that covers tiny tubes attached to the outer (= lateral or ventral) shell wall from the inside. In accordance with comparable Recent occurrences of similar structures in molluscs, we use the term “pearls” for these structures and the pits they form on the internal moulds. The nature of these encapsulated tubes is described and discussed. Because of the presence of these tubes inside the pearls, pearl arrangement, and their similarity to Recent mollusc occurrences, the tubes are interpreted as traces of parasitoses. The pearls and pits were grouped into five types based on differences in morphology, size, and arrangement. Then, having used these traits to perform a simple cladistic analysis, the resulting cladogram was compared to the phylogeny of ammonoids. Based on this comparison, it appears likely that the parasites underwent a co−evolution with the ammonoids, which lasted 10 to 15 Ma. Patterns of evolutionary events include co−speciation, “drowning on arrival” (end of parasite lineage near base of a new host clade), and “missing the boat” (parasite lineage does not adapt to a new host clade, thus not evolving a new parasite clade). Because of the lack of fossilised soft tissue, only speculations can be made about the systematic affiliation of the parasites, their life−cycle, infection strategy, and ecological framework. Some co−occurring bivalves also have pits reminiscent to structures caused by trematodes in Recent forms. Based on the available information, the tubes are interpreted as artefacts of trematode infestations, which, if correct, would extend the fossil record of parasitic trematodes into the Early Devonian.

Opis:
The aim of this work was to present alariosis – a newly diagnosed parasitic disease caused by a trematode Alaria alata. A. alata requires two intermediate hosts: a snail and a frog. Carnivorous mammals are definitive hosts. Humans and a number vertebrates can be paratenic hosts. The pathological consequences of the presence of A. alata in the connective- and muscle tissues, relevant symptoms, and its diagnostic methods have been described. Importance of multiorgans changes inflicted by the parasite have been emphasized. Alariosis may also exist as an ophthalmic disease. As yet no pathognomonic symptoms of this disease have been described. Alariosis is an emerging parasitic disease, difficult in diagnosis and requiring exclusion of other diseases. No serological test for diagnosis of alariosis are available.

Opis:
This review presents the results of studies on the freshwater snail-trematode associations, carried out in Europe since the beginning of the 20th century. The great number of synonyms of snail and trematode specific names has made the cooperation between malacologists and parasitologists difficult. Here we provide a survey of larval trematodes (cercariae) based on Central, North and Western European literature. Whenever possible, the valid species name is provided, accompanied by synonyms, or just provisional names are used making up the largest part of the list. Trematodes with a definitely unclear systematic status are indicated as species incertae sedis. These include mostly trematodes which were attributed obviously erroneous names with poor or no description of their morphology. Although the provisional names inflate the number of trematode species and there are still many identification problems, we believe that this is another step in assessing the trematode species composition in Europe which will help not only parasitologists but also malacologists and contribute to their closer cooperation.

Opis:
Trematodes of the class Digenea are parasites with complex life cycles and often use small mammals as definitive hosts; however, they are usually not highly prevalent in this group of mammals. In our work the patterns of occurrence of digeneans parasitizing small mammals were analyzed. The surveys were conducted at four locations, i.e., irrigation fields (Osobowice), a water distribution area (Mokry Dwor), recreational grounds (Redzin forest), and Nature Reserve „Stawy Milickie”. Overall 894 rodents were examined. During investigation we identified flukes representing the following species and groups: Brachylaima recurva, Brachylecithum glareoli, Echinostomatinae sp., and Plagiorchis elegans. The digeneans were reported from all studied locations and were present in Apodemus agrarius, A. flavicollis and Myodes glareolus. The statistical analysis showed significant qualitative and quantitative differences in infections with digeneans among examined animals. The highest prevalence of infection with flukes was reported in A. agrarius (28.8%) with the maximum value – 78.2% in the Nature Reserve „Stawy Milickie”; only at this location the co-infection with three and two trematode species were found. The differences in occurrence of Brachylaima sp., Echinostomatinae sp., and Plagiorchis sp. found in „Stawy Milickie” were not statistically significant; the flukes occupied the small intestine of A. agrarius at the same frequency. For comparison, digenetic trematode infection in the yellow necked mouse Apodemus flavicollis was dramatically lower (overall prevalence 2.8%) than in the striped field mouse A. agrarius, and flukes were reported only in Mokry Dwor (5.1%) and Milicz (5.9%). The bank voles Myodes glareolus were infected with two trematode species, i.e., Plagiorchis elegans (1.3%), and Brachylecithum glareoli (19.2%), and these parasites were reported only in the water distribution area. Aside from two accidental reports of dicrocoeliid trematodes found in Osobowice, Brachylecithum glareoli was reported mainly in bank voles M. glareolus collected from Mokry Dwor, which could indicate both host and site specificity for this species. Our results showed that the food habits of hosts species and site-specific conditions could be taken into consideration as potential factors affecting the trematode fauna of rodents.

Tortoises are a novelty in the world of pets. Although a great deal of information has been acquired on the internal medicine and surgery on these animals, little is known of their parasitological fauna. Fecal samples of 11 species of tortoises housed in the City Zoological Garden in Wroclaw were examined. Eggs of parasitic helminths were isolated using flotation and sedimentation techniques. The overall prevalence was 81.2%. Two groups (Nematoda and Trematoda) of endoparasites were found. Oxyurid eggs were found almost in every animal examined. Co-infection with oxyurids and ascarids was recorded for T. horsfieldii and T. marginata. Three species of tortoises were infected by digenic trematodes.

Opis:
Information on species of parasitic helminths native to Poland is provided by the Pasożytnicze helminty Polski. Gatunki. Żywiciele. Białe Plamy [1]. Until the middle of 2007, there were 1205 species of recorded helminths including 126 species of Monogenea, 338 of Trematoda (Digenea), 279 of Cestoda, 427 of Nematoda and 35 of Acanthocephala. They represented 32.9% of the species recorded in Europe (i.e., registered in the Fauna Europaea database). During the following three years up to the middle of 2010, 64 new species of Polish helminths were detected: 7 Monogenea, 15 Trematoda (Digenea), 21 Cestoda, 20 Nematoda and one Acanthocephala. Most hosts of the new helminth species were reported from birds (40 species), but also from fish (13 species) and mammals (10 species). Only one new species of helminth was detected in amphibians.

Opis:
Introduction. The european eel is one of the major fishing objects of the Russian fishery zone of the Vistula Lagoon (Baltic Sea). This is the reason that its parasite fauna was studied within 1998-2005. Material and methods. Totally 142 individuals of 35-81 cm in length were examined. The parasites collected from various organs were fixed and processed according to commonly accepted methods. Results. Twenty two parasite species representing the following higher taxa: Coccidia (2), Oligohymenophorea (2), Myxosporea (5), Monogenea (1), Cestoda (2), Trematoda (2), Nematoda (4), Acanthocephala (2), and Crustacea (2) were recovered. The following main features of the eel parasitofauna were determined: high specificity, predominance of the parasites with simple life cycle, the presence of three invader species (Anguillicola crassus, Pseudodactylogyrus anguillae, and Paratenuisentis ambiguus). The latter species was found in the Vistula Lagoon for the first time
