Opis:
The article summarizes sixteen years of research and academic publishing of the Research Group on Mass Migrations in the 19th and 20th centuries, Institute of History, Polish Academy of Sciences (IH PAN). The group focuses on mass migrations as a social and historical phenomenon integral to the understanding of the history of nations, regions and humanity as a whole, and responsible for shaping much of the human experience. It concentrates on the European and Transatlantic sphere in the second half of the 20th century, examined from a wide perspective while not losing sight of the specific time and place. The group comprises six scholars, each carrying out individual research projects. At the same time, they co-operate in stimulating and popularizing the research on migrations as a human phenomenon of universal geo-historical nature. The Work Group achieves this by organizing annual multidisciplinary conferences attended by scholars from Poland and abroad (Ukraine, France, Russia, Spain). The proceedings of these conferences are published in a series entitled “Migrations and Society” (12 volumes published so far, the 13th in print). Apart from the materials presented at the conferences, this publication also includes reviews, informative articles, etc. (“Reviews and Opinions” section). Every volume, usually focusing on a particular subject, presents a wide range of migration themes, including general issues (such as diaspora creation, feminization and the evolution of structures and directions of waves of migration), and especially detailed studies of various migration types (political and forced migrations, decolonizatory, regional – i.e. African, Latin American), emergence of new ethnic minorities, problems of Moslem immigrant societies, the role of churches, the fate of female migrants, processes of integration, conflicts of identity and culture etc. The Spanish speaking world is aptly represented in this publication, reflecting not only its place in global migration processes but also the close cooperation of the Work Group with their colleagues at the Spanish Historical Institute, “Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas”, which has led to two joint conferences, research scholarships, joint publications etc. In the choice of conference and publication topics the work group tries to pursue and popularize the perception of migrations as a natural and inevitable historical process with various triggers, forms, and results, a universal phenomenon and a cause for deep transformations of structure, consciousness and culture, not only in societies accepting migrants but also in those they left. The conferences organized by the IH PAN Work Group have gained a level of recognition among migration researchers and institutions, and the series “Migrations and Society” became a useful tool of academic teaching.

This essay approaches the concept of diaspora within the context of transnationalism and border crossing. Then it compares the diasporas from the His-panic Caribbean islands (Cuba, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico), tracing a brief demographic profile and describing their economic significance for the sending coun-tries. Later on, the author proposes that the migrants‘ ties with their countries of origin depend substantially on the interaction between sending and receiving governments. Above all, he assesses the long-term repercussions of the legal status of Cubans, Do-minicans, and Puerto Ricans in the United States, as well as in Puerto Rico, a second-ary destination for Cuban and Dominican migrants.

Opis:
The article analyzes the discourse in social sciences on the process of adaptation of migrants to a host society. The discourse is based on „integration theories”. Such an approach creates some difficulties and drawbacks. Therefore, an alternative approach grounded in empirical data on Chechen refugees in Poland is presented. The model is based on the concept of „adaptive strategies”. A „strategy” stresses human agency over structural pressures. The adaptive strategies of the Chechens in Poland are expressed in two contexts, i.e. a host society, explained by „new assimilation theories,” and transnational space. The strategies are applied in the process of reconstructing everyday life and while entering the social structures of the host society. The Chechens in Poland reconstruct their everyday life following patterns acquired in Chechnya. What is more, they use modern technologies to reproduce Chechen culture in Poland. Since the assistance offered by the Polish governmental and nongovernmental institutions to refugees and asylum seekers is insufficient, it often happens that the Chechens in Poland can receive support only from members of their own community in Poland. Owing to that support they are able to survive and adapt to the new environment.

Opis:
The article describes the main directions and reasons for educational migration in Europe as well as the Europeanization of the educational strategies of the young Poles. Those strategies are beginning to resemble the behavioural patterns of their peers from other EU countries. Nowadays, it is becoming more and more common for the Poles to take up studies abroad. The text provides an analysis of the official data about educational migration in various EU countries and a description of the author’s own research among Polish students in London based on participating observation, interviews and questionnaires. Official data about educational migration in the EU indicate that students often take up university studies in the states which share a border with the sending country. In consequence, they can keep being mobile and frequently change their place of residence. They increase their chances in the labour markets of both countries and they do not make hasty assumptions as to their country of settlement. Moreover, the analysis of the Poles studying in London indicates that educational migrants are prepared to look for a job not only in the sending country and the country of university study, but also in other European countries. The migrants educated abroad can apply for more attractive jobs in Europe, and thus they are better prepared and more prone to Europeanization or to making proper use of the EU rights connected with free movement of persons, services and capital. Their career perspectives are not limited to the sending country and the country of university study, but include also vocational projects in other EU countries. The example of the Poles in London shows that educational migrants constitute a special group, different from labour migrants. They can speak several foreign languages and have had migration experience even before taking up university studies. They are either children of multinational marriages or are in relationship with foreigners.

Often in themigration literature transnational relations ofmigrants and their institutions with the sending country are described as important factor strengthening or improving the situation of the migrants in the receiving country. The aim of the paper is to empirically prove that in some of the cases the set of multiple conditions affecting immigrant organizations may have the opposite effect. The example of Polish organizations in Germany shows that transnationalization may have as a consequence the limiting, and the degradation of immigrant organizations standing. The four analyzed factors determining the situation of Polish immigrant associational in Germany: the characteristics of immigrant group, the policy of the receiving country towards immigration and IOs, the diaspora policy of the sending country, as well as the bilateral relations between the sending and receiving country together constitute a combination that has a strong negative effect on the functioning of Polish organizations. This all produces an impression of falling into the “trap of transnationalism.”

GLOCALIZATION
Opis:
Although the interaction and the resulting interdependence of the involved parties on different sides of a state-national border is the constitutive component of the accepted understanding of the concept of transnationalism, the impact of immigrants’ transnational engagements on the home-country side of interconnection created by this phenomenon has thus far remained largely underexplored. This essay addresses this issue in a comparative-historical assessment of the effects of transnational engagements of past and present immigrants in America on the economies, civic-political affairs, material and symbolic culture, and social relations of their home-country localities. The transformative effects of immigrant transnational engagements on their home countries are treated in terms of glocalization understood as the process of simultaneous homogenization and heterogeneization of economic, political, and sociocultural forms.

The paper discusses transformations of the fans’ affiliations in the era of football’s transnationalization and de-territorialization. Firstly, it shows that the traditions associated with local football clubs or national teams have been important elements in the symbolic construction of regional or national identities. Secondly, referring to the example of British and Norwegian fandom, it argues that these loyalties are being replaced by more complex, multiple identities. This is reflected in the transformation of football spectatorship, both in terms of matchday participation, as well as long term attachments to particular clubs and national teams.
W pierwszym rzędzie ukazane zostaje, jaką rolę w kreowaniu regionalnych i narodowych identyfikacji pełnią lokalne kluby i drużyny narodowe w piłce nożnej.

Opis:
In recent years, the concept of transnationalism has become one of the main analytical tools used to assess the mobility patterns of Central and Eastern European populations. This work studies the transnational activities of Ukrainian immigrants in Spain. It examines three areas of transnational behaviour: travelling to the country of origin, the frequency of non-direct contact with the communities of origin and remittances. Our objective is to examine how gender, legal status and type of family unit (multilocal/non-multilocal) affect the frequency and extent of transnational activities. Most of the statistical data presented in this article come from the National Immigrant Survey (ENI-2007) conducted by the National Institute of Statistics (Spain). The study confirms that family ties play a crucial role in establishing and maintaining links between countries of origin and destination. It also reveals that the legal status of Ukrainian immigrants in Spain has a great impact on patterns of transnational behaviour. In this sense, it is evident that institutional factors must be included in analyses of migratory processes from a transnational perspective.

Opis:
After decades of overlooking children’s perspective, migratory and transnational studies start including children and focus on their subjectivity. The goal of this article is to expound the agency of transnational children and verify what circumscribes it. The authoress is interested in a particular situation of second-generation children who were born in the U.S. and come to Mexico, i.e. their parent’s place of origin. She also analyses cases of so-called 1.75 generation, i.e. children who (e)migrated to the U.S. in early childhood. Intergenerational decision-making over whether to depart from the U.S. and go to Mexico is a social situation in which children’s agency becomes apparent. The authoress argues that their mobility should often be called placements instead of migrations, due to the fact that adults decide about it. Although the authoress emphasizes the role of age and gender, she argues that migratory status is the most important determinant of transnational children’s agency. Hitherto nation-states have presented minors as “undeportable” and social researchers have mainly elaborated on the influence of their parents’ deportability. Precisely, the inclusion of the migratory status makes this work an important contribution to transnational studies.

The concept of transnationalism created by Nina Glick Schiller, Linda Basch and Cristina Szanton-Blanc seems to be useful to present the importance of the Internet for Polish missionaries in Belarus. They define transnationality as multiple relationships which are established by immigrants with the country of origin and the host country. This is particularly evident on the example of new media. Four types of transnational relations can be distinguished: political, economic, social and cultural ones. Currently in Belarus there is a population of nearly 1.5 million Catholics, of which over 60% is considered to be Polish. Some of them are the so-called church Poles. This creates a specific cultural situation of Catholics, which is reflected even in the materials posted on the Internet. Catholicism is linked with Poland, especially with Polish language. Bilingual and transnational activity of the church is visible on the website. However, not all information appears in the two languages. Observing the presence of Polish missionaries on the Internet, we can distinguish three levels: informational, communication and economic. For that reason they use different tools: portals, blogs, pages and instant messaging services, establishing contact with parishioners and friends in the host country and abroad. They are both senders and recipients. Thanks to new media it is possible to reconcile their belonging to different countries, so it can be said that priests have a hybrid identity, in this case Polish and Belarusian. Thanks to websites priests can inform about current events, investments, hours of services, send Christmas wishes or call for support. On the level of communication the internet is undoubtedly an important medium supporting missionaries’ contacts, but not the most important one. Still a telephone prevails as the most reliable and quite direct solution - unfortunately a payable one. The Internet is also used as a tool for raising funds for the church. Priests on the websites inform readers about their activities and ask for donations. This results in financial dependence of the church in the East. Currently both Poles and Belarusians need a visa to cross the Polish-Belarusian border. This means that a state permit is required to take actions in those two nations. In this situation the internet is an effective medium of particular importance as it surpasses state and economic restrictions.

Opis:
Post-accession emigration from Central Europe, and Poland in particular, is an important feature of contemporary migration flows in Europe. While there is now a substantial body of research on Polish migration to the UK exploring one of the largest post-accession flows, there has been less focus on other destination countries. This paper is based on a qualitative study of Polish migrants in Norway, the most common destination country in Scandinavia for post-accession migrants. The paper explores return considerations among Polish migrants in Norway through a three-fold focus: first, exploring the notion of Polish post-accession migration as liquid and temporary; second, questioning the primacy of economic factors in understanding return considerations; and third, adopting a transnational framework for the analysis. The paper argues that work and family considerations are key to migrants’ decision-making processes and experiences, and play out differently depending on highly individual circumstances. Yet, despite the fact that open borders within the EU and EEA area support the notion of «liquid migration», it is found that in migrants’ considerations about return to the country of origin, as in their lived experience, the option of a «life in motion» is not a preferred solution. Rather, for most migrants work and family have to be eventually located in one place: either here, or there.

Opis:
Z jednej bowiem strony pierwiastki miejsca i tożsamości tworzą w sztuce Prucnal niepowtarzalny, otwarty na „niepoprawne” odczytania układ, utkany z różnych i przeciwstawnych jakości (estetycznych, performatywnych, ideologicznych itd.).
The career of the Polish actress and songstress Anna Prucnal is an example of a transgressive artistic biography torn between countries, cultures, ideologies, styles and media. Piotrowski examines Prucnal’s achievements in popular music in the context of interactions between her artistic identity and her theatre songs, and the subsequent places where she was artistically based (Warsaw, Berlin, Paris). He examines the process of acculturation and narrativisation of Prucnal’s song art through considering places and cultures associated with them, arguing that they not only shaped the identity of the artist, her aesthetics and style, but they underwent “relocations” within those contexts. On the one hand, elements of place and identity in Prucnal’s work create a unique system, open to an “incorrect” reading, woven from different and opposing qualities (aesthetic, performative, ideological etc.). Thanks to that Prucnal’s art – on a scale rarely seen in popular music – is transnational, transgenre and trans-style, and belongs to the transavantgarde of the 1970s and 1980s. On the other hand Piotrowski believes that Prucnal’s identity, processual and continuous, redefined in each gesture and for a moment, cannot be reduced, and refers, in various contexts, above all to itself. The paradox and mystery of Prucnal’s art of song rely on the existence of a separate and permanent core: the artist herself and by herself is a “place” – extracted by the voice and a unique expression, this place cannot be confused with anybody or anything else, nor may it be appropriated.

The text aims to analyze the process of empowerment of immigrant women who set up and develop their own business activities. The first part of the article discusses current research concerning female immigrant entrepreneurship. Five main threads are distinguished: women migrants’ enterprises as a manifestation of emancipation and self-realization, self-employment as a result of double discrimination, the phenomenon of “hidden” female entrepreneurship, the feminized profile of some labour market niches and the problem of reconciling professional activities and family life. The second part of the text intends to relate these findings to the description of activities of immigrant entrepreneurs in Poland. The research presented consists of qualitative interviews with highly-qualified migrant women from post-Soviet states who run their own business. Their firms operate in transnational spaces; immigrants take advantage of the resources of migrant networks, their own cultural background and inter-cultural competences, which influence the base of contractors, relations with employers and coworkers, as well as the locations where the businesses is established and developed. The women associate their achievements with the need for independence and personal development.

Author proposes a modernist and ethno-symbilist perspective in researching national idea of Caucasian ethnic group devided in stalinist USSR as a result of national engeenering, as well as by nineteenth century conquest of Northern Caucasus. The category of 'trans-nationalism' is based on Arjun Appadurai's understending of development of various social and cultural identities in globalising world. The case of Circassians living in North Caucasus and diaspora is viewed in this perspective. Thus, article is a historical and anthropological scope of Circassian nationalism in past two centuries. Czerkieski ruch narodowy: emigracja – diaspora – transnacjonalizmGłównym celem artykułu jest przybliżenie historycznego rozwoju nacjonalizmu czerkieskiego. W badaniach nad tożsamością pochodzącej z Kaukazu Północnego grupy etnicznej  autor proponuje perspektywę modernistyczną i etnosymboliczną.

Opis:
This paper examines the politics of Vietnamese immigrants in America from the transnational perspective. Vietnamese immigrants’ politics are transnational due to two factors: their life experiences with the communists in Vietnam, and the current political situation in the home country. The impact these two factors have upon the politics of Vietnamese immigrants in America is complex. Although most Vietnamese living in America are anticommunist, they do not share the same level of hostility toward the government in Vietnam. This paper provides some insights into the complex politics of Vietnamese immigrants in America which are transnational and ‘disjunctive.’
