Opis:
The article concerns the Polish translation of Les Années by Annie Ernaux, published by Czarne in 2022. Translators, Krzysztof Jarosz and Magdalena Budzinska, who is also the editor of the volume, filled out a questionnaire proposed by the author of the article that aims to find out the strategy regarding cultural elements, but also the presence of footnotes. The article contains the analysis of various types of footnotes and various strategies resulting from translation dominant selected by the translators, visible in the Polish translation.

Opis:
Our contribution is part of the reflection in translation studies focused on the teaching of translation. Its objective is to take stock of the project Traducteur en herbe carried out by the Institute of Romance Studies at the University of Wrocław since 2014. Aimed at learners of the French language, the initiative focuses on the practice of translation, an activity that is absent from the secondary education curriculum in Poland. The objective of the project is to promote the art of translation among high school students and to arouse their interest in the French language and civilization. From an institutional point of view, the purpose of the event is to familiarize students with the university environment and stimulate their interest in the courses offered at the Institute. The presentation of the project is an opportunity to reflect upon the errors made by novice translators who try their hand at literary translation. It can be useful for teachers of translation, secondary school teachers and all those interested in actions aimed at awakening young people’s interest in the art of translation.

Pułapki dosłownego tłumaczenia rosyjskiego wykrzyknika Ба! Na przykładach z „Mistrza i Małgorzaty” oraz innych dzieł literackich Tekst dotyczy problemu przekładu wykrzykników i adekwatności przekazu komunikowanych przez nie emocji. Liczne cytaty, egzemplifikujące znaczenie rosyjskiego słowa Ба!, w oryginale dotyczą zdziwienia, zaskoczenia na widok kogoś/czegoś, w szczególności przy nieoczekiwanym spotkaniu. Dosłowne tłumaczenie w takich sytuacjach jest w polszczyźnie nieuzasadnione, ponieważ polska równobrzmiąca jednostka ba – nietożsama z rosyjską – funkcjonuje inaczej. Zalicza się ona do kategorii komentarza metatekstowego, dopowiedzeń, odnoszących się zawsze do treści wcześniejszego kontekstu.
The pitfalls of a literal translation of the Russian exclamation Ба!: using examples from “The Master and Margarita” and other literary works The text deals with the problem of translating exclamation marks and the appropriateness of conveying the emotions they convey. Numerous quotations illustrate the meaning of the Russian word Ба!, which in the original refers to surprise, amazement at the sight of someone/something, especially at an unexpected encounter. A literal translation in such situations is not justified in Polish, as the Polish unit ba – which is not identical to the Russian one – functions differently. It falls into the category of apposition or metatextual commentary, always referring to the content of the earlier context.

The article addresses the issue of translator’s notes in a Russian translation of Olga Tokarczuk’s “Bieguni” novel by Irina Adelʹgejm. The main text of the original, despite its abundance in borrowings, interjections and quotations in languages other than Polish, was not provided with explanatory notes by the author. The translator, however, provided the translation with 149 notes. They are notesexplaining terms, proper names, names of realities and others translated in the main text as well as notes explaining fragments formulated in the novel’s text in languages other than the language of the narration. On the basis of the undertaken analysis it is stated that the strategy of forming paratexts adopted by the translator is inconsistent. The secondary text designates an additional way of reading “Bieguni” novel, but it does not impose it as using the notes is just a possibility and depends on the reader’s choice.

Opis:
In the general typology of translation, journalistic texts belong to the group of non-fiction texts, in opposition to literary texts. Non-fiction texts also include specialist, technical and other texts. All these texts have their specific features which also influence their translation into other languages. Depending on the genre and topic, either aesthetic values or specialized vocabulary dominate in journalistic texts. Rendering them into another language requires different approaches and decisions made by translators to recreate the semantic potential. Various types of information are found in a journalistic text, determining translation strategies and the functions of the translated text. Translators make decisions considering the information which must be included in the translated text. Specialist terms which do not pose a problem for a competent translator may complicate the relations of inter-text equivalence, not only in communication, but also in the functioning of the translated text in the new context. With many text modifications, taking into account the recipient’s perspective, as well as the shortening of the text, which always involves omitting some information, certain details and specialist terms may be eliminated or replaced by non-specialist terms, which results in a deviation from the meaning of the original text. An analysis of parallel texts ilustrates this tendency.
В общей типологии перевода публицистические тексты относятся к группе текстов, противопоставляемых художественным текстам, наряду с текстами специальными, техническими и др., каждый из которых отличается своими особенностями и спецификой их перевода. В зависимости от жанровых различий и обсуждаемой проблематики может в них преобладать эстетический потенциал или специальная терминология (как наиболее яркая оппозиция), воспроизведение семантического потенциала которых в переводе требует от переводчика разного подхода и различных решений. В публицистическом тексте совмещаюся различные типы информации, предопределяя переводческие сиратегии и функции переводного текста. Подчиняя им переводческие выборы и решения относительно включения или невключения определенной информации в текст перевода, единицы терминологического характера, которые с точки зрения компетентного переводчика не вызывают проблем, усложняют соотношения межтекстовой эквивалентности не только в коммуникативном аспекте, но также в аспекте функционирования переведенного текста в новом для него пространстве и контексте. Многочисленные модификации, как правило, оправдываются перспективой получателя, но также необходимостью сокращения текста, свегда сочетающегося с устранением определенной части информации, в реультате чего некоторые детали и терминологические единицы могут ограничиваться, исчезать или замещаться соответствиями нетерминологического характера, то есть более общими наименованиями, которые лишь приближают смысл точных подробных смыслов, содержащихся в специальных терминах. Анализ двутекстов (текстов оригинала и перевода) подтверждает данную закономерность.
Teksty publicystyczne w ogólnej typologii przekładu są wymieniane w grupie tekstów sytuujących się w opozycji do tekstów literackich, obok tekstów specjalistycznych, technicznych, użytkowych oraz innych, z których każdy wyróżnia się swoistymi cechami i swoistością ich przekładu. Zależnie od zróżnicowania gatunkowego oraz podejmowanej problematyki mogą w nich dominować walory estetyczne bądź słownictwo specjalistyczne (to najbardziej wyrazista opozycja), których odtworzenie potencjału semantycznego w przekładzie będzie wymagało od tłumacza różnego podejścia i odmiennych decyzji. W tekście publicystycznym skupiają się bowiem różne rodzaje informacji, wyznaczając strategie translatorskie i funkcje tekstu przełożonego. Podporządkowując im wybory translatorskie i decyzje co do tych informacji, które muszą się znaleźć w tekście przełożonym (przy rezygnacji z innych), jednostki terminologiczne, które nie stanowią problemu dla kompetentnego tłumacza, jednak komplikują relacje międzytekstowej ekwiwalencji, przy czym nie tylko w planie podwójnych relacji komunikacyjnych, ale przede wszystkim w planie funkcjonowania tekstu przełożonego w nowej dla niego przestrzeni i kontekście. Przy wielu modyfikacjach tekstowych, uwzględniających perspektywę odbiorcy, ale też skrócenie tekstu, co zawsze łączy się z pominięciem części informacji, pewne szczegóły i sformułowania terminologiczne mogą być ograniczane, eliminowane bądź zastępowane jednostkami o charakterze nieterminologicznym, a więc pojęciami uogólnionymi, przybliżającymi jedynie sens owych szczegółowych sensów zawartych w terminach specjalistycznych. Analiza dwutekstów potwierdza tę prawidłowość.

Powieść Olgi Tokarczuk Księgi Jakubowe to szeroka i skomplikowana panorama epicka, której akcja dzieje się na pograniczach państw, kultur i religii. Przetłumaczenie takiego utworu na jakikolwiek język to zadanie wymagające dużego trudu i starannych przygotowań, skierowanych przede wszystkim na opanowanie wszystkich możliwych kontekstów – historycznych, językowych, wyznaniowych. Szczególnie zaś trudnym wyzwaniem jest przetłumaczenie Ksiąg Jakubowych na jeden z języków, które są elementem rzeczywistości przedstawionej w powieści i znajdują się w relacjach interferencyjnych z innymi językami, używanymi przez bohaterów lub funkcjonującymi w ich środowiskach. Takim językiem jest właśnie język ukraiński. Artykuł jest próbą podsumowania doświadczenia przekładu powieści na ten język z uwzględnieniem największych trudności, z którymi przyszło zmierzyć się tłumaczowi.
Olga Tokarczuk’s novel The Books of Jacob is a wide and complicated epic panorama the action of which takes place on the borderlands of countries, cultures, and religions. Translating such a work into any language is a task that requires a lot of effort and careful preparation, aimed first of all at exploring all possible contexts: historical, linguistic, religious. A particularly difficult challenge is to translate The Books of Jacob into one of the languages that are part of the reality presented in the novel and are in relationships of interference with other languages used by the characters or functioning in their environments. Ukrainian is such a language. This article is an attempt to summarise the experience of translating the novel into this language, taking into account the greatest difficulties faced by the translator.

This study presents some of the results stemming from my research on picturebook translations for children and young adults in the context of multimodality, and in particular, the strategies used by translators of this specific type of multimodal message. The aim of the study is to determine whether translation scholars’ postulates on picturebook’s translation are reflected in reality. In order to determine this, I will investigate the choices of translators of this medium and their awareness of multimodality. I intend to conduct a series of individual in-depth interviews with picturebook translators. The first interview has already been conducted and analysed, and in this paper I present the results of this analysis. In the examples cited from the supporting material, it can be observed that the translator took into account the relationship between the textual and visual layers, changing the original text in accordance with the visual layer.

W artykule podjęto problem wynagradzania tłumaczy przysięgłych przez polskie organy ścigania i wymiaru sprawiedliwości w świetle obowiązujących aktów prawnych, przede wszystkim w świetle rozporządzenia Ministra Sprawiedliwości z dnia 24 stycznia 2005 r. w sprawie wynagrodzenia za czynności tłumacza przysięgłego. Rozważając ów problem, za wątek przewodni obrano omówienie poszczególnych przepisów rozporządzenia i pozostałych aktów prawnych, analizując egzemplarycznie szereg postanowień sądów w przedmiocie wynagrodzenia tłumacza, w których z różnych powodów odmówiono mu przyznania całego wynagrodzenia wnioskowanego fakturą.
The paper addresses the issue of remunerating sworn translators by Polish law enforcement agencies and courts in the light of applicable legislation, first of all in the light of the Regulation of the Minister of Justice of 24 January 2005 on Remuneration for the Services of Sworn Translators. The authors analyze particular provisions of the Regulation and other legal acts and examine a number of court decisions relating to the remuneration of sworn translators in which for various reasons the translator was refused the full remuneration requested.

The Journal de traduction written by Marie‑Hélène Dumas during the translation of The Republic of Imagination by Azar Nafisi falls within an intermediate paratextual position between brouillon and métadiscours, where it is no longer the critic‑reader who establishes the bermanian translation horizon, but it is instead the author who spells out a project supported by a dual perception of authorship. As such, it is worth observing it in light of the recent interest of Translation Studies in the field of genetics of translation.
Journal de traduction napisany przez Marie‑Hélène Dumas podczas tłumaczenia The Republic of Imagination Azara Nafisiego mieści się w pośredniej pozycji paratekstualnej między brulionem a metadyskursem, gdzie to nie krytyk‑czytelnik wyznacza bermański horyzont przekładu, ale to autor przedstawia projekt poparty podwójnym pojęciem autorstwa. Dlatego warto poddać to obserwacji w świetle niedawnego zainteresowania translatoryki genetyką przekładu.

Opis:
This paper explores the concept of legal translation as a Third Space through the lens of the ‘multilingual’ Court of Justice of the European Union (ECJ). In many ways legal translation at that Court fits readily with the characterisation of translation as a Third Space. Due to complex internal production processes the ECJ produces texts which are undoubtedly hybrid in nature, and which exhibit distinctive features on a lexical and textual level marking them out as a product of cross-fertilisation of influences from source and target languages and legal cultures. Even the teleological approach taken towards legal reasoning at the ECJ occupies a space outside the strict confines of the texts involved. Both the processes and the product of the ECJ’s language system appear to bear all the hallmarks of translation as a Third Space. However, translation at the ECJ also challenges the concept of a Third Space. The prevailing definitions of translation as a Third Space fail to effectively conceptualise additional nuances of the specific nature of drafting and the complex nature of translation at the ECJ. This paper uses original empirical data to demonstrate that translation at the ECJ places constraints on the undefined, vague and fluid nature of the Third Space, warping the forces at work within that space. In this regard, rather than an amorphous space, the Third Space is better thought of as a determinate area which is delimited by elements of translation process which constrain it. This adapted framing of the Third Space can consequently be used to better understand and illustrate the dynamics at play in other areas of legal translation where the current concept of the Third Space is equally inadequate for encompassing the specific nature of translation practices which impact on that space-in-between.

Opis:
Waleria Marrené-Morzkowska (1832-1903), pisarka, dziennikarka i tłumaczka oraz Zofia Ernstowa (1918-1994), autorka kilkudziesięciu tłumaczeń literatury włoskiej, działały w odległych momentach historycznych, niełatwych dla polskiej kultury narodowej. Zarówno w okresie rozbiorów, jak i w czasach PRL-u wiele inicjatyw na polu kultury dochodziło do skutku jedynie dzięki determinacji jednostek. Źródła przechowywane we włoskich i polskich archiwach pozwalają częściowo zrekonstruować „mikrohistorię” przedstawionych tłumaczek, ich kontakty z włoskimi pisarzami oraz wysiłki podejmowane w Polsce w celu udostępnienia polskiemu odbiorcy ważnych dzieł literatury włoskiej. Jak wynika z prowadzonych badań, sprawczość tłumaczek nie ograniczała się jedynie do wykonania przekładu, ale polegała na aktywnym uczestnictwie w doborze dzieł i ich promocji, przyczyniając się w ten sposób do tworzenia polskiego kanonu włoskiej literatury.
Waleria Marrené-Morzkowska (1832-1903), writer, journalist and translator, and Zofia Ernstowa (1918-1994), author of several dozen translations from Italian literature, were active in two (distinct) historical moments that were not easy for the Polish culture. During the partitions as well as in the times of the Polish People’sRepublic many cultural initiatives were undertaken thanks to the determination of individuals. The archival materials preserved in Italy allow to reconstruct their microhistory, contacts with the Italian writers and activities in Poland that aimed at printing the selected works, constituting proof that the translator’s agency is not limited to execution of the commissions but often involves active participation in selecting the works for translation in order to create a literary canon.

Opis:
W artykule opisano edytory graficzne języków LD i FBD wykorzystywane w autorskim środowisku inżynierskim CPDev. Schematy stworzone za pomocą tych edytorów są wstępnie konwertowane do kodu źródłowego w ST, a następnie tłumaczone do autorskiego kodu pośredniego. Unikalną cechą edytorów jest mechanizm automatycznego wyznaczania połączeń między elementami schematu, wykorzystujący algorytm A*. Poszczególne elementy schematu nie mają sztywno określonego położenia w polu roboczym, co wpływa na przejrzystość schematu. W trybie śledzenia on-line, bezpośrednio na schemacie graficznym wyświetlane są wartości wyjść poszczególnych elementów. W tym celu schemat graficzny jest konwertowany do postaci grafu AOV, a następnie upraszczany i bezpośrednio z niego generowany jest kod źródłowy w języku ST. Opracowane edytory graficzne umożliwiają tworzenie zarówno prostych jak i złożonych programów sterowania, jak również zapewniają łatwą edycję, klonowanie fragmentów schematu, zapis, odczyt oraz drukowanie stworzonego diagramu.
The article describes graphic editors of LD and FBD languages used in the CPDev proprietary engineering community. The diagrams created with the help of these editors are pre-converted to source code in ST, and then translated into the author’s intermediate code. A unique feature of these editors is the mechanism of automatically determining connections between diagram elements using the A* algorithm. Individual elements of the diagram do not have a rigid position in the working field (e.g. LD ladder), which significantly affects the transparency of the diagram. In on-line tracking mode, the output values of its individual elements are displayed directly on the graphic scheme. To ensure this, the graphic schema is first converted to an AOV graph, and then simplified and the ST source code is directly generated from it. Developed graphic editors allow creating both simple and complex control programs, as well as ensure easy editing, cloning of fragments of the scheme, saving, loading and printing of the created diagram.
