Opis:
The article is an attempt at a chronological presentation of the most important old and complete translations of the Bible by the time and including the Protestant Reformation in both compared languages. As for the Dutch language, eight Biblical translations have been analysed with Protestant translations prevailing (5). On the other hand, Polish is represented by five old translations of the Scriptures with a slight advantage of Protestant translations (3) over Catholic ones (2). Translations of the Bible largely affected the language and the style of the Scriptures. It is worth emphasizing that they were most influenced by the Protestant Staatenbijbel (1637) in the then Netherlands and by the Jakub Wujek Bible (1599) in Poland.

Opis:
The most important translations of the Bible into Polish, i.e. the Catholic Jakub Wujek Bible (1599) and the Protestant Gdańsk Bible (1632) were written at the end of the reformation period and were renewed and used in catholic churches and protestant communities until the first half of the 20th century. The reprints were systematically updated. In the 20th century the need to translate again the Holy Scripture into Polish was recognized. There were a few attempts at that in the second half of the previous century. They were always accompanied by heated debates which referred to the need of new translations as well the ways translators adopted to render in Polish selected books, sentences or even words. A religious text functions in a specific system of a higher level, i.e. religion. Religion is understood here as a culture text according to the Tartu-Moscow Semiotic School. Owing to this interpretation, religion has its own language built onto natural language. Text in natural language constitutes only a fragment of a bigger sign entity. To put it most simply, since a natural text is a subcomponent of a semiotic religious text, any change introduced in the former disrupts the coherence of cultural meaning on a higher level. Because of “a secondary modeling system” (a term coined by Yuri M. Lotman) the language of religious texts is always a bit archaic. This very modeling system prevents the propellers of modernization from a more thorough linguistic update of old biblical translations in Poland and, more often than not, does not let translators depart too far from the translation tradition.    Translated by Agnieszka Bryła-Cruz

Opis:
The translation of the Book of Ecclesiastes by Marcin Bielski was published in 1554 as the second Polish translation of this Old Testament book published in print. It is undoubtedly an independent work, and its author reached beyond any doubt for the Hebrew text. It cannot be ruled out, however, that Bielski confronted his translation with the Vulgate. In his work he introduced minor modifications and reduced the content of some verses. He probably did it in order to adapt his translation to the Polish reader. Bielski limited the rhetoric of his translation, which was reflected in the reductions and elimination of even a characteristic hebel. At the same time, he tried to give his translation the most careful form, taking care of its stylistic correctness and aesthetics. Further research on this document will surely make it possible to read its translation and literary value more thoroughly, which will allow for a more complete understanding of the sixteenth-century translations of biblical books in Poland.

The author shows the peculiarities of the ecumenical translation of the Bible into Polish against the background of the most important ecumenical translation projects into other languages. The aim of the research was to present the features of Polish inter-confessional translation. The author presented the history of earlier inter-Christian translations of the Bible into Polish, the team-committee method in the work on the translation of the Bible and its impact on ecumenism and the achieved effect. The research followed a historical method based on use of introductions to ecumenical Bibles in foreign languages and on never published archives from the Bible Society in Poland. Another group of sources are recension and papers on the ecumenical Bible. The results of the studies carried out similarities and differences between the foreign ecumenical translations and the Polish edition; the specificity of the polish biblical style of the ecumenical Bible; the reasons for such a late appearance of the Polish ecumenical Bible.

The phrase wierzgać przeciw ościeniowi – from origin to dictionary The paper provides a proposal of a monographic description of a selected linguistic unit in the Polish language, namely the phrase "wierzgać przeciw ościeniowi", which so far has been commonly perceived as belonging to the resources of Polish biblisms. The work is divided into two parts. The first section is devoted to a rather peculiar genetic status of the phrase, previous description of the unit, its textual realisations in biblical and general Polish language, as well as the state of native lexicographic records. The second part contains synthetically approached data from the first part in the form of a trial dictionary entry of the phrase "wierzgać przeciw ościeniowi", as the ‘trailer’ of multicontextual lexicon of Polish biblisms, combining the elements of philological, biblical and cultural knowledge into a whole.

Opis:
The authors study different equivalents of the Hebrew word Eden in selected old and new Slavic translations of the Bible. The equivalents of this lexeme have been excerpted from several Slavic translations of the Bible, which were selected on the basis of diverse criteria. The translations are presented chronologically and old translations are opposed to the new ones. They represent three groups of Slavic languages: West Slavic, East Slavic and South Slavic and are connected with the base of translation, i.e. the original text and/or Greek or Latin text. They can also be classified according to religious denomination and the strategy of the translation. The observation of those equivalents enables us to see not only their variety and mutual influence among translations but also the struggle of Slavic translators with a very difficult language matter. Many factors were important in that struggle: genetic and structural distances between Semitic and Slavic languages, different perceptions of reality in distant cultures, the discrepancy between biblical and Slavonic realities and the influence of religious denomination. Another important factor was the state of biblical knowledge at the time – incomparably poorer in the case of the oldest Slavic translations in comparison to modern ones.

Opis:
The 1975 edition of the Warsaw Bible, a modern translation from th original languages and published by the British and Foreign Biblical Society, is a translation that has superseded the Danzig Bible (Biblia Gdańska) of 1632, translated by Daniel Mikołajewski, as the authorized version to Polish-speaking Protestants in its moral guidance, observance of religious ceremonial, ecclesiastical creed and religious practice. Despite the claims of the editorial board of the Warsaw Bible, however, its translation has not entirely discarded the vocabulary of the Danzig Bible, the last link in the chain of Polish Renaissance translations that referred to the foundational doctrinal principle of the Protestant Reformation sola Scriptura. This article aims at indicating lexical relics in the New Testament of the Warsaw Bible that have their roots in the sixteenth century Czech translation of the Bible - Kralice Bible, and which were absorbed via the Danzig Bible that superseded and was much influenced lexically by the earlier Czech translation published about 50 years earlier. A section of the lexis of the New Testament of the Danzig Bible is put to an analysis in the article, namely: 1. lexemes peculiar to this particular translation, i.e., the ones that do not occur in, firstly, the New Testament in the Brześć Bible (Biblia brzeska) (1563) and in the Danzig New Testament (1606), i.e., the two earlier Protestant translations affiliated with the Danzig Bible, and, secondly, in the Bible of Jakub Wujek (1599), a Catholic post-Tridentine translation made from the Vulgate; 2. lexemes characteristic for the lexis of the New Testament of the Danzig Bible and for either of the above mentioned Protestant translations. Thus defined lexical layer of the New Testament in the Danzig Bible provided a basis for a confrontation of parallel Biblical passages in the New Testament in the Kralice Bible, which resulted in a list of 108 lexemes indicating or manifesting a potential lexical dependence of the Danzig Bible from those of the Kralice Bible . Only 25 lexemes of the total set of 108 lexemes from the New Testament in the Danzig Bible are repeated in the parallel places of the New Testament in the Warsaw Bible, whereas only 12 lexemes of the former group (i.e., 25) (after a confrontation with the parallel Biblical passages of the New Testament in the Millennium Bible, the modern Polish Catholic translation for which the Protestant Danzig Bible was not a pattern for translation), unequivocally indicate their traditional provenance. Bearing in mind the fact that the lexemes under scrutiny in the New Testament of the Danzig Bible usually occur with the frequency of f=1, the scope of the possible dependence of the vocabulary of the New Testament in the Warsaw Bible from that of the Kralice Bible via Danzig Bible, has to be evaluated as weak and insignificant. Notwithstanding the fact, the Warsaw Bible does include some lexical relics that clearly testify to the older relationships of Polish Biblical translations on account of the doctrinal sola Scriptura principle, originated within Protestants circles, with the sixteenth century Kralice Bible.

Celem artykułu jest wskazanie na wielowiekowe związki polszczyzny z Biblią, jako jednym z fundamentów polskiej kultury i tożsamości. Relacje te autor artykułu rozpatruje na płaszczyźnie genetycznej i formalnej współzależności pomiędzy stylowym inwariantem polszczyzny biblijnej a literacką odmianą języka polskiego.
The purpose of this article is to show age-old connections between the Polish language and the Bible, as one of the foundations of Polish culture and identity. The author views these relations from the perspective of the genetic and formal interdependence between the style invariant of the biblical Polish language and its literary variety. To this end, the author mentions previous theoretical findings and material research showing directions and forms of these influences, resulting in the emergence of the main style constants in the biblical Polish language. What is more, the significance of the Bible and its native translations for the emergence of literary Polish language has been pinpointed. Attention has also been drawn to more modern options of research into the conditions of the relationship between biblical Polish vs. literary Polish which stem from reference to the rhetorical and literary heritage of the specific books of the Bible. The paper provides a number of arguments in favor of the literary value of the Bible, as a fact resulting not only from its local historical experiencesbut also features inherited from the primary biblical style. Moreover, the article discusses the critical references to the biblical translation initiatives which lead to the detachment of biblical Polish from its literary model and the norm of high style.

The Rev. Prof. Aleksy Klawek (1890-1969) was a great Polish Old Testamentscholar who can certainly also be called a great Hebrew scholar. His dream was to create a modern translation of the Bible directly fromHebrew, Aramaic and Greek, and Poland had long been in need of one, asWujek’s translation of 1597 was outdated and not easy to understand. Butit took Klawek years before he decided to present his first fragmentarytranslations; this happened in the late 1930s and 1940s. It is not clear whyKlawek did not join the team of translators of the so-called “Tyniec Bible”,now known as the “Millennium Bible”, in 1959, but being aware of the weakness of Father Augustyn Jankowski’s translating team, Klawek formedhis own team before the publication of the “Millennium Bible” composedmostly of his former Ph.D. students. In the end, we did not receive a moderntranslation of the Bible from Klawek’s hands as he died in 1969. His ideawas put into practice under the editorship of his pupil Michał Peter andMarian Wolniewicz. As Klawek’s translations of Psalms, Song of Songs andDaniel remained unfinished, all that the editors could do was to gratefullyacknowledge Klawek’s initiative. The new “Poznań Bible”, which appearedin the years 1974-1976, is much prized for its quality (clarity and accuracy)and its extensive commentaries.

Macedonians are completely satisfied with the present form of their liturgical texts as far as their language is concerned, though at the same time they feel a constant need to prove their national and spiritual identity. For a long time Church Slavonic in its Russian version was used as the liturgical language, but in 1920s the contemporary language started taking gradually its place, the process growing stronger after the state acquired independence in 1991. First translations of biblical and liturgical texts into the contemporary language appeared after 1945, for example the four Gospels were translated from Church Slavonic by the archbishop of Ochrid and Macedonia, Gabriel II and printed in 1952. The first complete translation of the Bible into the contemporary Macedonian was edited in 1990, though it is strongly felt, especially in the circle of academic lecturers and translators of the liturgical texts, that the Bible should be translated from its original languages, which the lack of specialists in the domain makes difficult. The need to work out the Macedonian language, especially its liturgical version – free of Turkish and somewhat Greek influence - and the Macedonian liturgical music and singing rises many discussions, also among the Church hierarchy, professors of theology and musicologists both in the country as well as in the diaspora all over the world.

The author of this article presents issues connected with the collection, compilation of and use of sources for the history of the so-called Warsaw Bible, published for the first time by the British and Foreign Biblical Society in 1975. Up until now, nobody had attempted to compile the history of the translation of the Bible. Nobody had tried to collect and develop sources for its history, either. Th e author discusses, in turn, the issues connected with Warsaw Bible editions, archival documents concerning its history, interviews with living witnesses to the events, reviews and scientific publications referring to this very Bible. He then presents the methodology of work with these sources. The aim of this article is to kindle a flame of interest among theological circles in Poland in research on the history of the Warsaw Bible, which will celebrate its Golden Jubilee in 2025.

The paper is an attempt at the synthetic look into this part of Polish bible translation heritage, whose integral part are the translations of the Bible in Protestant circles. The fundamental thesis of the work is based on the statement that Protestant translations of the Bible into Polish contributed substantially to its quantitative and qualitative evolution, as well as constitute one of the main sources of the development of the biblical stylistic variant of Polish. The greatest attention has been paid to the role and significance of Polish Bible translations in this process, which were made in the times of Reformation and Counter-Reformation, as well as to the attempt at indicating some links that appeared between the most important Catholic and Protestant translations of this period. The paper provides numerous references to previous views on the investigated issues, and provides a range of new suggestions, e.g. a periodization of the history of biblical Polish language, as well as indicates the need for further work in this field.
