Philosophical limericks with refined humor: a translating project of I. Guberman’s Gariki – Due to the desuetude in modern Italian poetry of formal metrical patterns, translating Russian verse, still today very conservative in matter of metrical constraints, is very difficult: the more the Italian TT calques the Russian ST metric features, the less any aesthetic equivalence is expected. This paper summarizes the main problems involved in the Italian translation of I. Guberman’s humorous quatrains (“gariki”) and the techniques which could partially compensate the intercultural asymmetry. 16 gariki are presented in Italian translation as a first attempt to be evaluated by the scholarly community.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to show how the dimensions of imagery, one of the most important human cognitive abilities, can be expressed, that is to consider the impact this ability can have on the process of text production and its understanding in translation. It is presented on the example of the novella by Thomas Mann A Man and His Dog and its translation into Polish by Leopold Staff how the cognitve translation theory based on the cognitive grammar of Langacker (1987, 1991) can be applied to translation analysis. First, the terms conceptualization and imagery are introduced and explained from the cognitive perspective and the dimensions of imagery: selection, abstraction and perspective are desribed. Based on this, the results of the analysis of examples selected from the novella by Thomas Mann and its Polish translation are presented.

This article deals with the current state of development of two main categories of modern translation theory: “untranslatability” and “non-equivalence”. Untranslatability belongs to translation-theoretic universals and is a binary category. The essence of the phenomenon, its nature, as well as such concepts as “translation losses”, “untranslatable units”, “translatological classification of text types” are considered. The differences in the meaning of the concepts “untranslatability” and “non-equivalence” are described. The article objective is to show actuality and pecularity of their manifestation in the context of the Russian and German languages.

The article discusses preliminary results of a comparative analysis of two translations of Edmund Campion’s (1540–1581) Rationes decem. One being the Polish translation entitled Dziesięć wywodów by Piotr Skarga (Wilno, 1584) and the other being the English translation of an unknown translator (Rouen 1632). The article begins with a brief historical outline of the genesis of Campion’s work and compares the two translations in the light of the “translator’s invisibility” theory formulated by Lawrence Venuti. Selected passages from both translations are then analyzed in accordance with Edward Balcerzan’s typology of textual transformations in translation. Skarga’s translation, in comparison with the later English translation, seems to be closer to the original text. The most common type of transformation applied in the Polish text is inversion and complementation (adiectio), whilst in the English translation predominant translation strategies are substitution and complementation. Skarga as the ‘invisible’ translator faithfully renders the original text, and his editorial decisions encourage the reader to become an independent reader. The article presents preliminary results of a research project on the study of subversive publications in sixteenth-century England and their reception in the Republic of Poland-Lithuania. The Project is funded by the Polish National Science Centre.

Zawiera charakterystykę metody badawczej autora oraz omówienie problematyki poszczególnych artykułów. Szczególny nacisk został położony na opisanie stosunku Chestermana do dyscypliny Translation Studies – lęków, nadziei i postulatów autora związanych z jej kształtem i statusem. Perspektywa wyłaniająca się z książki została skonfrontowana ze stanem badań nad przekładem w Polsce, a widoczne w niej przekonanie o konieczności uspójniania dyscypliny zostało podane w wątpliwość.
This text is a review of a book by Andrew Chesterman: Reflections on Translation Theory. Selected Papers 1993-2014 (John Benjamins Publishing Company, Amsterdam/Philadelphia 2017). It explains the author’s research methods and describes the problems covered in individual articles. Special attention is paid to a description of Chesterman’s attitude to the field of translation studies, including the fears, hopes and postulates presented by the author about its shape and status. The perspectives emerging from the book are contrasted with the current state of research into translation in Poland today, and doubts are cast on the need to achieve greater coherence in this field of research.

This paper explores the concept of legal translation as a Third Space through the lens of the ‘multilingual’ Court of Justice of the European Union (ECJ). In many ways legal translation at that Court fits readily with the characterisation of translation as a Third Space. Due to complex internal production processes the ECJ produces texts which are undoubtedly hybrid in nature, and which exhibit distinctive features on a lexical and textual level marking them out as a product of cross-fertilisation of influences from source and target languages and legal cultures. Even the teleological approach taken towards legal reasoning at the ECJ occupies a space outside the strict confines of the texts involved. Both the processes and the product of the ECJ’s language system appear to bear all the hallmarks of translation as a Third Space. However, translation at the ECJ also challenges the concept of a Third Space. The prevailing definitions of translation as a Third Space fail to effectively conceptualise additional nuances of the specific nature of drafting and the complex nature of translation at the ECJ. This paper uses original empirical data to demonstrate that translation at the ECJ places constraints on the undefined, vague and fluid nature of the Third Space, warping the forces at work within that space. In this regard, rather than an amorphous space, the Third Space is better thought of as a determinate area which is delimited by elements of translation process which constrain it. This adapted framing of the Third Space can consequently be used to better understand and illustrate the dynamics at play in other areas of legal translation where the current concept of the Third Space is equally inadequate for encompassing the specific nature of translation practices which impact on that space-in-between.

This paper compares the translation theories of Otokar Fischer (1883–1938) and Jiří Levý (1926–1967) and highlights the differences and similarities between them. It will be shown that the two scholars focused on similar issues and developed them in different ways, but with various points of contact. The first question to which both Fischer and Levý devote specific attention concerns the centrality of communicative functions, ideological and aesthetic values in the translation process and, therefore, the need to preserve them. Then, it will be shown how they both focus on the need to understand, interpret and translate what is not explicitly expressed, i.e. the subtext, the need to bring the words of the original text back to a prenatal stage, in which they existed only in the form of thought. It will further be highlighted that both Fischer and Levý place emphasis on the importance of translation as a work of art and means of cultural transmission and on the importance of the cultural education, taste and creativity of the translator. Finally, the issue of the dual norm of translation will be addressed: Fischer and Levý focus on what they believe to be the two fundamental requirements of a translation, i.e. fidelity and beauty, reaching different conclusions.

Niniejszy artykuł jest recenzją monografii pod red. Marii Piotrowskiej pt. Perspektywy na przekład, która ukazała się w 2021 roku nakładem Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego w Krakowie. Książka składa się z dwóch części; po 4 artykułach w cz. 1 ujmujących kwestie przekładu i przekładoznawstwa bardziej całościowo, cz. 2 zawiera siedem rozdziałów, których autorzy pochylają się nad konkretnymi rodzajami przekładu i typami badań przekładoznawczych. Każdy rozdział zaopatruje czytelnika w rzetelną wiedzę i każdy opatrzony jest obszerną bibliografią. Monografia pomyślana jest jako kompendium wiedzy o przekładzie i podręcznik otwierający przyszłą serię podobnych publikacji w języku polskim i angielskim. W mojej ocenie praca ta wykazuje niekwestionowaną przydatność we wszystkich trzech deklarowanych przez współautorów obszarach: teorii, praktyce i dydaktyce przekładu.
This article is a review of the monograph entitled Perspektywy na przekład [Perspectives on translation], edited by Maria Piotrowska and published in 2021 by the Jagiellonian University Publishing House in Krakow. The book consists of two parts; after 4 articles in part 1, addressing the issues of translation and Translation Studies more comprehensively, part 2 contains seven chapters whose authors focus on specific types of translation and types of translation studies. Each chapter provides the reader with solid knowledge and each supplies an extensive bibliography. The monograph is conceived as a compendium of knowledge about translation and a handbook opening a future series of similar publications in Polish and English. In my opinion, the book is unquestionably useful in all three areas declared by the co-authors: translation theory and practice as well as translator education.

Artykuł porusza zagadnienia z historii ukraińskiej translatologii, mianowicie roz- woju tej nauki w zakresie teorii, praktyki oraz krytyki przekładu w latach 20. i 30. XX stulecia. Główną hipotezą rozprawy jest twierdzenie o znaczącej roli czasopism w procesie stanowienia ukraińskiej translatologii jako nauki. W tym celu przeanalizowano krytyczne i teoretyczne teksty, które ukazały się na łamach miesięczników „Червоний шлях” (1923–1936) i „Життя й революція” (1925–1934) oraz podliczono opublikowane w nich przekłady tekstów literackich. W wyniku badań wyłoniły się kolejne perspektywistyczne wątki badań nad zawartym w danych źródłach materiałem przekładoznawczym.
The article deals with issues from the history of Ukrainian translatology, namely the de- velopment of this science in the field of theory, practice and criticism of translation in the 1920s–1930s. The main hypothesis of the article concerns the significant role of journals in the process of establishing Ukrainian translatology as a science. For this purpose, critical and theoretical texts that appeared in the monthly magazines “Червоний шлях” (1923–1936) and “Життя й революція” (1925–1934) were ana- lyzed, and translations of literary texts published in them were counted. As a result of this research, fur- ther prospective threads of research on the translation material contained in the given sources emerged.

Karl Dedecius’ Translations of Tadeusz Różewicz’s Poetry Into German Karl Dedecius is one of the most important figures representing Polish literature and culture in Germany. His activity went beyond the conventional framework of a translator’s competence. Karl Dedecius and Tadeusz Różewicz were eternally bound by many years of friendship, which had a beneficial influence on publishing „Formen der Unruhe”. The author of this article attempts to describe the translation of Tadeusz Różewicz’s poem „W środku życia” into German. Różewicz’s writing requires exceptional sensitivity due to its multidimensionality and innovation. Dedecius’ individual translation theory is the basis of many analyses. The paper aims at demonstrating a translator’s individual decisions interpreted from the point of view of Roman Lewicki’s translation model.

The paper is an attempt to examine what lies at the heart and soul of the mediaeval Psalter in the contemporaneous approach(es) to its vernacularisations. In particular, the paper investigates the applications of the mediaeval translation theory in relation to a 12th-century Anglo-Norman, a 15th-century Middle French and four 14th-century Middle English prose Psalter renditions, with a view to locate them within the spirit of the attitude to biblical translations current in the Middle Ages and against the backdrop of the position of the Psalter in the period. In practical terms, the analysis is conducted on the basis of the equivalent selection strategies for rendering four Latin nouns central to the Psalter: anima, animae ‘soul,’ cor, cordis ‘heart’ and, perhaps surprisingly, ren, renis ‘kidney’ and lumbus, lumbi ‘loins’. All cases of variation in this respect are studied closely from intra- as well as extra-textual perspectives in order to establish the possible reasons behind the divergences, as these constitute exceptions rather than the rule, even in apparently heterodox renditions.
Artykuł stanowi próbę bliższego przyjrzenia się podstawowym zasadom średniowiecznego podejścia do tłumaczenia psałterza na języki wernakularne. Przedstawiono w nim analizę zastosowania mediewalnej teorii tłumaczeń w odniesieniu do dwunastowiecznego Psałterza anglo-normandzkiego, piętnastowiecznego Psałterza średniofrancuskiego i czterech czternastowiecznych tłumaczeń Księgi Psalmów na średnioangielski. Celem było wykazanie, w jakim stopniu analizowane teksty odzwierciedlają ówczesne podejście do tłumaczeń biblijnych w kontekście znaczenia psałterza w średniowieczu. Badanie przeprowadzone jest na podstawie doboru ekwiwalentów w tłumaczeniu czterech – niezwykle istotnych z powodu rangi tych tekstów w średniowieczu – łacińskich rzeczowników: anima, animae‚ ‘dusza’, cor, cordis‚ ‘serce’ oraz, co może zaskoczyć, ren, renis‚ ‘nerka’ i lumbus, lumbi, ‘lędźwie’. Najwięcej uwagi poświęcono ustaleniu źródła analizowanej z perspektywy zarówno intra-, jak i ekstratekstualnej wariancji w doborze odpowiedników, jako że rozbieżność w tym względzie stanowi raczej wyjątek, a nie regułę, nawet w tłumaczeniach – wydawałoby się – heterodoksyjnych.

Tento článek je věnován využití paralelního korpusu InterCorp v teorii překladu.   Ve výzkumu byly použity vybrané fráze, které ukazují možnosti využití paralel- ního korpusu InterCorp. Zvláštní pozornost byla věnována rovnocennosti překladů a jeho kritériem s ohledem na materiál z paralelního korpusu. Také byla popsána specificita česko-polského a polsko-českého překladu, který poskytoval kontext pro konkrétní zdroje InterCorp.   Analýza ukázala užitečnost materiálu korpusu při hledání vhodných překladatelských řešení. Článek přispívá k teoretickému badání, které ukazuje úlohu paralelních korpusů v práci překladatele. 
This article is devoted to the use of the Intercorp parallel corpus in translation theory. In the research selected phrasemes have been used in order to show possibilities of using the parallel corpus in translation. Particular focus has been put on translation equivalence and its criteria with reference to the material from the parallel corpus.    Also, the specificity of Czech-Polish and Polish-Czech translation has been described, which provided a context for particular InterCorp resources.    The analysis indicated usefulness of the corpus-driven material in the search of adequate translator’s solutions. The article contributes to theoretical analysis related to the role of parallel corpora in the translator’s work

Opis:
Modern linguistics is characterised by a great interest in contrastive investigations, comparing different aspects of related and distant languages. Due to the development of the linguistic theory of translation, the comparative study of languages is very topical nowadays, creating a basis for the theory and practice of translation as a whole and for translation stylistics in particular. When comparing different aspects of two languages we can improve our knowledge of each language because some specific features of the language are explained when compared. Hence, the linguistic theory of translation will be developed by means of studying similar and contrastive aspects of two languages which form a translation pair – the source language and the target language. Stylistic topics play an important role in translation linguistics. Stylistics as a science is connected with translation as an object of linguistic analysis. The two-language character of linguistic translation investigation approximates it with investigation into contrastive stylistics, which studies the functional equivalents of units from different languages.
