Ichnologists have over used the root ichn- “trace”, employing it in new terms and new ichnogenera alike, to the point where it can be difficult to express one self clearly without using it several times in one sentence. The root derives from Ancient iχνος (ichnos), which means “foot print” or “track”, or by extension a “trace”, any sign of an animal’s activity. Perhaps it is time to explore the use of other roots to create new ichnologic terms and genera. Alternative Latin and Greek roots are given here, as well as ad vice on how to construct new ichnogenera in a technically correct and aesthetically pleasing manner.

In the context of genology. Julia Hartwig’s individual genre The article relates to three collections of poetry written by Julia Hartwig entitled Błyski, Zwierzenia i błyski, Trzecie błyski. Those miniature notes form a collection of omnidirectional traces and signs, characterized by its structural and thematic heterogeneity. Poetics notes contained in discusses volumes execute atypical literary form which is lapidaries. Hartwig while creating further poems, she heads a for authorial poetics, she generates entirely individual genre. Błyski also come in various analogic relations with Hartwig’s another poems placed in different poetry volumes. It proclaims the repeatability of topics, motives and structures in Hartwig’s writings, even the rewriting of her own lines and verses.

Iron is one of the most abundant elements on Earth, a vital component of every living organism, and an essential micronutrient for all animal species. The primary source of iron for calves and other new-born ruminants is milk or a milk replacer, while for adults it is forage. Drinking water can contain various amounts of Fe ions and can be a source of this element as well. Systemic iron homeostasis in vertebrates is mostly regulated by hepcidin (HEP), a peptide synthesized and secreted by hepatocytes. The largest amounts of iron in the body are incorporated into proteins, mainly haemoglobin and myoglobin. This element participates in several biochemical processes including blood production, transport of oxygen, energy metabolism and immune processes. Iron deficiency can result in so-called iron deficiency anaemia, mostly occurring in young calves due to low iron content in cow’s milk and high demand for this element by calf’s organism. Iron poisoning mostly occurs due to excess iron intake caused by an inappropriate dose of iron given to animals (injection or per os administration) or accidental consumption of high doses of supplements. Excess iron intake can cause overload and damage of internal organs. Oxidation of ferrous iron in haemoglobin can result in methemoglobinemia and an inability of erythrocytes to carry oxygen. In recent years, scientists have implicated some questions regarding iron and ruminants that need re-evaluation or further investigation, e.g. the upper tolerable concentration of Fe in drinking water, the relationship between inflammation and iron status, serum Fe as an indicator of inflammation, or ferritin as a predictive factor for iron deficiency anaemia in cattle.

Cassiterite and base-metal mineralisation from the Gierczyn mine on the Karkonosze-Izera Massif, Poland has been studied using electron microprobe and LA-ICP-MS (Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry) techniques in order to determine the content of indium in the ore minerals. The main carriers of this element are sphalerite (up to 433 μ/g of In), chalcopyrite (up to 117 μ/g of In) and cassiterite (up to 0.02 wt.% In). Trace element contents of sulphides, especially Ga in chalcopyrite intergrown with sphalerite in comparison with chalcopyrite without sphalerite, may indicate metamorphic re-equlibration and suggests that the ore minerals might recrystallized and underwent metamorphism in conditions of greenschist/amphibolite facies. Although the deposits in the Stara Kamienica Schist Belt are not of economic value, they can contribute to better understanding of the relations between trace element partitioning and the formation of ore minerals.

The aim of the study is to assess the contents of iron, zinc and copper in the diet among of adolescents living in Warsaw. The intake of selected trace elements was estimated on the basis of three-day dietary records. Microelement contents in the diet were calculated using Food Composition Tables. The percentage of the RDA realization for the safe level was calculated on the basis of standards for Polish population, developed by National Food and Nutrition Institute. It was demonstrated that adolescents living in Warsaw had 50-60% copper-deficient diets. The content of iron and zinc in the diet of adolescents was about 10‑40% lower than recommended. Deficiency of iron in the body causes anaemia and influences learning process, therefore the content of this element in the diet of young people is especially important.
Celem pracy była ocena poziomu spożycia żelaza, cynku i miedzi przez młodzież zamieszkałą na terenie Warszawy. Średnie spożycie wybranych mikroelementów oszacowano na podstawie badań przeprowadzonych metodą trzydniowego bieżącego notowania oraz przy zastosowaniu tabel wartości odżywczej produktów spożywczych i odniesiono do norm dla ludności Polski opracowanych w Instytucie Żywności i Żywienia na poziomie bezpiecznym. Wykazano, że młodzież zamieszkała na terenie Warszawy miała diety niedoborowe w miedź w 50-60%. Zawartość żelaza i cynku w diecie badanych osób również była o ok. 10-40% niższa od zalecanej. Niedobór żelaza w organizmie powoduje niedokrwistość i wpływa na procesy uczenia się, dlatego zawartość tego pierwiastka w diecie osób młodych jest szczególnie istotna.

In the third year of a pot experiment (in a greenhouse), the carryover influence of fertilization with fresh sewage sludge and, for comparison, mineral fertilization on the content and uptake of Fe, Mn, Mo, B, Ba, Sr, As, Sn, Li, and Ti by the biomass of Miscanthus sacchariflorus grass. The yield of silver-grass biomass was evaluated on the basis of two harvests (June and December). Trace elements in the tested grass as well as in the soil (after harvest) were determined by means of the ICP-AES technique after sample combustion in a muffle furnace. Significant influence of sewage sludge fertilization on yield of silver- grass biomass was found. Grass harvested in autumn contained higher contents of some analyzed trace elements (Fe, Mn, Sr, Ba, and Ti) than that harvested in summer. The uptake of trace elements uptake by the silver-grass biomass was higher from the objects fertilized with sewage sludge than the ones receiving mineral fertilization. After three years of cultivation, the soil contained more Fe, Mn, Ba, Sr, Ti, B, and Li as compared to the content before the experiment.
W trzecim roku doświadczenia wazonowego (w warunkach szklarni) badano wpływ następczego nawożenia świeżym osadem ściekowym oraz – dla porównania – nawożenia mineralnego na zawartość i pobranie Fe, Mn, Mo, B, Ba, Sr, As, Sn, Li i Ti przez biomasę trawy Miscanthus sacchariflorus. Plon biomasy określono na podstawie dwóch zbiorów miskanta (w czerwcu i grudniu). Pierwiastki śladowe w testowanej trawie oraz glebie (po zbiorze) oznaczono metodą ICP-AES, po mineralizacji próbek na sucho, w piecu muflowym. Stwierdzono istotny wpływ nawożenia osadem ściekowym na plonowanie biomasy miskanta cukrowego. W trawie zebranej jesienią stwierdzono większą zawartość niektórych analizowanych pierwiastków (Fe, Mn, Sr, Ba i Ti) niż w trawie zebranej latem. Pobranie pierwiastków śladowych z plonem biomasy miskanta było większe z obiektów nawożonych osadem ściekowym niż z obiektu nawo¿onego nawozami mineralnymi. Po trzech latach uprawy stwierdzono w glebie większą zawartość Fe, Mn, Ba, Sr, Ti, B i Li, w porównaniu z zawartością przed założeniem eksperymentu.

Bituminous to anthracite coals from three small Stephanian intramontane coal-bearing basins (La Magdalena, Cinera-Matallana and Sabero) located along the Sabero-Gordón fault line strike-slip systems of the Southern Cantabrian Zone (SCZ) were examined. Coal rank expressed as mean vitrinite reflectance values of these Stephanian coals is in the range 0.72-3.96%. The vitrinite maceral group exceeds 72 vol. % in all of the coals. The coals are characterized by relatively variable contents of mineral matter and coal-ash. The mineral matter comprises, in the main, clay minerals, carbonates, sulphides and quartz. The coals exhibit medium-high concentrations (see for comparison Ronov et al. 1990; Kabata-Pendias, Pendias 1999; Ketris, Yudovich 2009) of the following elements (in ppm): ΣREE (53-205), Ba (300-900), As (11-57), Zn (<50-150), Cr (10-160), Rb (50- 145), Co (5-26), Sc (2-24.6), Ce (17-99), Yb (1.3-4.5), Th (2.4-11.9) and U (1.1-8.1), Br (<1-14), Cs (<2-9), Eu (<0,3-1.5), Lu (0.11-0.85) and Sb (0.8-4.8), and relatively low concentrations of Sm (0.6-6.6) and Ta (<1-2). They are also characterised by relatively high Th/U values (1.31-2.29). LREE/HREE values fall in the range 24-44 (average - 30). In contrast, concentrations of Au, Ag, Hg, Ir, Ni, Se, Sn, Sr, and W are below detection limits for the applied INAA method. As the concentrations of elements are significantly higher in coal-ash, most are likely related to mineral matter in the coals.

Mark, trace and structure have been in consistently used in ichnology for many years; we wish to clarify the origins and to prescribe correct usage of these terms. The origins of the words are ancient and complex; in the twentieth century they were given clear definitions as ichnologic terms. Seilacher (1953) defined a mark (German Marke) as a physical (abiogenic) sedimentary structure, as in the common terms sole mark, flute mark, but not bite mark or scratch mark. Trace has been defined many times; we recommend the consensus definition of Bertling et al. (2006) as “a morphologically recurrent structure resulting from the life activity of an individual organism (or homotypic or ganisms) modifying the substrate”; this in cludes dwelling trace, feeding trace, bite trace. Structure, as implied in another consensus paper (Frey, 1973), is a neutral term for geologic patterns resulting from either biogenic or abiogenic processes. Use of the three terms in a clear consistent manner will aid communication both among ichnologists and between ichnologists and their colleagues in other fields.

For the establishment of a new ichnogenus or ichnospecies, the type material shall be fossil, not unfossilized material. This is not always possible, because the transition between the two states, the fossilization barrier, is extremely vague defined. In most fossil material, this is not a problem. However, in the case of bioerosion structures (borings, rasping traces, attachment scars in hard substrates), the problem is serious. For example, when does a sponge boring in an oyster shell be come fossilized? The question arises when Recent and sub-Recent materials are considered. Two examples are discussed. (1) Microborings are described and named in foraminifera dredged from the sea floor. In this material, it is not possible to distinguish between “fossilized” and “unfossilized” foraminifera. Bioturbation and other processes may have mixed recently dead, Pleistocene and older foraminifera in the sea-floor sediments. (2) Small, characteristic borings are made by slipper limpets in pagurized gastropod shells. The structures would constitute a new ichnospecies of Oichnus, but these borings have not been found in “fossilized material” and the borings therefore remain nameless. Because bioerosion structures constitute “ready-made fossils”, it is suggested that the onset of fossilization be equated with the death of the bioeroding tracemaker.

The purpose of this work was to determinate the amount of titanium in different environmental water samples spiked with crop biostimulant Tytanit. The measurements were conducted using adsorptive stripping voltammetry (AdSV). The titanium complex with chloranilic acid was accumulated on mercury film silver based electrode (Hg(Ag)FE) at the potential -0.3 V. The analysis of natural water samples enriched with Tytanit, collected in the eastern part ofPolandconfirms that this procedure is fast and essential for the determination of titanium in environmental water samples.

The presented paper briefly delimitates the main ideas of Levinas' criticism of Husserl ́s concept of time. According to Levinas, time in Husserl ́s comprehension is something like a product of the consciousness. In the consciousness is the time becoming a remembrance (remémorable) and then it is recaptured (récupérable) through the retention and protention or anticipation in present. Levinas believes that time is structured in completely different way; basically it is unreachable and untouchable as it is not an achievement of being (conatus essendi) but it is the transcendence of oneself, one ́s spacing, distance from being. It is not simply as the subject is experiencing time but it is more as the subject, a continuance of time and it flows in the stream of time. Subject as is understood by Levinas is the one who interfere the course of the time, “the possibility of new beginnings”.

The study shows the content of macro- and microelements in the leaves and rhizomes of Glyceria maxima of the Słupia River in Słupsk. The content of macro and micro-elements in G. maxima was analyzed for each component separately and in an integrated way, and comparing the demand for nutritions. The largest quantity of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and calcium were found in the leaves, meanwhile zinc, iron, manganese, nickel and copper in the G. maxima rhizomes. The amount of Zn and Cu, in all of the tested positions, within the range of the limit for the plants, and the concentrations of Ni and Mn exceed physiological needs. The U Mann Whitney test showed a number of statistically significant differences in the concentration of the analyzed elements in leaves – rhizomes, leaves – bottom sediment and rhizome bottom sediment relation. The relations between designated heavy metals formed a following series: Mn>Fe>Zn>Ni>Cu in leaves and Fe>Mn>Zn>Ni>Cu in rhizomes. The G. maxima shoots accumulated 985.8 do 1441.4 mmolc∙kg-1 in all the analyzed components, and the lower value of the sum of the accumulated macro and microelements were found in rhizomes. The sum of ion comospition of the macronutrients in the leaves and rhizomes was similar. The content of nitrogen was 51.7–53.7% of this amount, 5.8–8.6% phosphorus, potassium 22.8 – 26.6%, 4.9-5.8% of magnesium, calcium, 8.2–11.9%, and trace elements were 0.58% in total, in the case of leaves and 8.70% in the rhizomes.

A forecast of the negative impact exerted on the environment by selected trace elements in "Bełchatów" Power Plant has been prepared on the basis of the results of investigations into these elements’ distribution carried out as part of earlier research on coal from “Bełchatów” Field and the data on updated analyses of the content of these elements in 55 brown coal samples from test boreholes. Work in "Bełchatów" Power Plant, which is supplied with coal from "Szczerców" Field, will be accompanied by trace elements transfer. On the basis of the conducted investigations it has been found that the biosphere is most threatened by mercury emissions. As shown by the presented results of analyses and calculations, the emissions of mercury in "Bełchatów" Power Plant are low. Mercury is accumulated chiefly in gypsum produced in the FGD plant. The content of mercury in slag and ash is low.

The development of new sorbents and their application in preconcentration methods for determination of trace analytes is subject of great interest. Sample pretreatment methods, such as separation / preconcentration prior to the determination of metal ions have developed rapidly due to the increasing need for accurate and precise measurements at extremely low levels of ions in diverse matrices. This review summarizes and discusses several analytical methods involving the preparation and use of new solid phase extractant. A literature survey of the last ten years offering a critical review of these new sorbents available for use in trace analyte enrichment is provided.

Background. The work is designed to uncover the pattern of mutual relation among trace elements and epidemiological data in the degenerated intervertebral disk tissue in humans. Hitherto the reason of the degenerative process is not fully understood. Trace elements are the basic components of the biological compound related both its metabolism as well as environmental exposure. The relation pattern among elements occurs gives new perspective in solving the cause of the disease. Methods. We have analysed trace elements content in the 30 intervertebral disc from 22 patients with degenerative disc disease. The concentrations of Al, Cu, Cd, Mo, Ni and Pb were determined with Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. To analyse the multidimentional relation between trace element concentration and epidemiological data the chemometric analysis was applied. Results. The similarity have been shown in occurrence of following pairs: Cd-Mo as well as Mg-Zn. The second pair was correlated with Pb concentration. Pb levels are observed to be competitive to Cu concentration. Cd concentration was related to Zn and Mg deficiency. No single but rather cluster of epidemiological data show observable influence on the TE tissue variance. Zn and Cu was related to the male sex. Operation with orthopedic implants were related to combined Al, Mo and Zn concentration. Conclusions. This is the first chemometric analysis of trace elements in disk tissue. It shows multidimentional relations that are missed by the classical statistic. The analysis shows significant relation. The nature of the relations is the basis for further metabolic and environmental research.

This study is the first to describe the neoichnology of an Arctic fluvial point bar (Colville River, Alaska, USA) and examine the sedimentological effects of tracemakers in this sedimentary setting. Seasonal extremes in discharge and sediment deposition in this system result in sandwaves, current ripples, gravel bars and mud veneers, with the latter forming extensive mudcracks. Organismal traces are abundantly represented in sandy mudflats on the downstream portion of the point bar and are characterized by: (1) abundant shallow horizontal invertebrate burrows and surface trails, directly comparable to Treptichnus, Cochlichnus and Aulichnites; (2) avian tracks and (3) large mammal tracks. Treptichnus-like burrows are attributed to dipteran larvae tracemakers, whereas Cochlichnus- and Helminthoidichnites-like trails were likely from nematodes or oligochaetes. Avian tracks are primarily from seagulls, geese, swans and plovers; mudcracks were connected directly to tracks, which developed as a result of in creased amounts of sunlight available during the polar summer. Mam mal tracks were dom i nated by those of caribou (Rangifer tarandus), but include grizzly bear (Ursos arctos) and other mammals. Caribou herds significantly impacted emergent and submergent mudflat surfaces through advection of saturated thixotropic muds and dry sand, while also fracturing mudcracked zones, and hence actively produced mud clasts. Vertebrates thus can cause considerable mixing, redistribution and erosion of sediments in Arctic point bars with only a few months of activity. Ichnodiversity was low but accompanied by high trace abundance, reflecting fa vorable hydrodynamic, solar and atmospheric conditions throughout a polar summer. In contrast, sedimentation and bioturbation are absent during winter months, when ice cover prevents organismal interactions with fluvial sediments. As a reult, the ichnocoenose does not fit easily into paradigms of previously defined continental ichnofacies (e.g., Mermia and Scoyenia) and is more like a composite ichnofacies. These findings can thus serve as a starting point for more detailed studies of circum polar point bars, while also adding new perspectives to the interpretation of trace fossils in circum polar fluvial environments.

The study utilized data from a field experiment carried out at the Experimental Station in Zawady owned by the University of Natural Sciences and Humanities in Siedlce in the years 2005–2007. The experimental factors included two soil tillage systems and seven weed control methods in potato. Iron, copper and zinc in weeds were deter- mined with the AAS method. The trace element content in weed dry matter before row closure of potato depended significantly on soil tillage methods (excluding Cu), weed control methods and weather conditions, and, prior to tuber harvest, on soil tillage and weather conditions during the growing season. The uptake of Fe, Cu, and Zn by weeds from the area of 1 hectare depended on the experimental factors, weed biomass and weed chemical composition.

Le propos de cet article est de relever, dans une approche comparative, la versatilité du rôle des objets de collection dans le processus de remémoration chez les collectionneurs de certains romans de Pascal Quignard. L’analyse du discours mémoriel des collectionneurs relève deux aspects : un rapport différent à la valeur de l’objet (muséal ou intime) et le pouvoir de déclencher des émotions. Le discours balance entre une évocation impersonnelle, qui met l’accent sur l’importance matérielle, la dimension testimoniale et esthétique des objets d’art d’époques anciennes et une description passionnée et subjective de petits objets banals, mais chargés de significations psychologiques. L’article démontre que se rapporter excessivement aux objets-temps/trace en vertu de leur valeur documentaire ou commémorative débouchera sur un échec de la démarche mémorielle. Paradoxalement, le collectionneur reste toujours à la recherche de la mémoire perdue, malgré l’excès de preuves matérielles qu’il détient.
The purpose of this article is to highlight – in a comparative approach – the versatility of the role of collectibles in the process of recollection among collectors in certain novels by Pascal Quignard. The analysis of the memorial discourse of collectors reveals two aspects: the different relationship to the value of the object (museum or intimate) and the power to trigger emotions. The discourse balances between an impersonal evocation, with emphasis on the material importance, the testimonial and aesthetic dimension of art objects from ancient times and a passionate and subjective description of small, banal objects, but charged with psychological meanings. The article demonstrates that excessively relating to time-/trace-objects by virtue of their documentary or commemorative value will lead to a failure of the memorisation process. Paradoxically, the collector always remains in search of the lost memory, despite the excess of material evidence he holds.

In this paper the rate migration of trace metals (Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn) in polluted turf-podzol sandy loam soil was investigated in lysimetric experiment. Koller’s model was applied to obtain the ranking of the metals according to their rate of migration in soil to seepage water. Among the studied metals, the most intense migrant in the soil to seepage water was lead. Lead had highest and earliest maximum concentration in seepage water. Cooper had weak migration intensity. According to metals migration ability, they can be ranked in the following descending order: Pb > Cd > Zn > Cu. Findings are relevant to assessing the metal as dangerous.

The article concerns textual phenomena in the poetry of Urszula Kozioł, which constitute a part of a linguistic method for examining relations between elements of poetic language. The examples discussed concern free verse – they reveal elaborate structures and linguistic processes focused on syntactic condensation, poetic accommodation, elliptic verse or phraseological trace. In the poetry of Kozioł, especially phraseology is original, which makes the receptive perspective adopted at describing linguistic phenomena representative of complicated formal-semantic processes. The draft is an attempt to read the Poet’s texts with the use of linguistic tools, so it not only gives a complete picture of an individualised poet but helps to point out peculiarities, the examination of which requires a reflection on language perception in poetic structures.

Background: Volcanic ash, which is ejected during volcanic eruptions, flies in the air and spreads by the wind over large distances. It is a magmatic source and as such may contain heavy metals. The aim of the study was to carry out investigation on heavy metal content: Pb, Cd, Zn, Fe, Mn, Cu and Cr in samples of moss bags exposed to atmospheric dust containing volcanic ash in Sosnowiec (Poland) after eruption of Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland. Materials and methods: Samples have been exposed to atmospheric dust after volcanic eruption for 2 months, and were mineralised in 70% HNO3 and 30% H2O2. The content of Pb and Cd was analysed by atomic absorption spectrometry with electrothermal atomization (ETAAS) and Zn, Fe, Mn, Cu, Cr by atomic absorption spectrometry with flame atomization (FAAS). Results: During the experiment the content of lead in samples of moss increased by 54,9 μg/g, cadmium by 3,41 μg/g, manganese by 150 μg/g, iron by 6,09 mg/g, zinc by 514 μg/g, copper by 20,77 μg/g and chromium by 6,99 μg/g. Conclusions: In Sosnowiec the comparable increase of metal content was from several to 41 times higher than in the areas not exposed to volcanic ash. It indicates that volcanic ash can be a potential source of heavy metals in the environment and, consequently, affect our health.
Wstęp: Pył atmosferyczny, który jest wyrzucany podczas erupcji wulkanów, długo unosi się w powietrzu i rozprzestrzenia na duże odległości przy udziale wiatru. Jest pochodzenia magmowego, więc może zawierać metale ciężkie. Celem pracy było zbadanie zawartości metali ciężkich: Pb, Cd, Zn, Fe, Mn, Cu i Cr w próbkach mchu narażonych na działanie pyłu wulkanicznego opadającego na ziemię. Materiał i metody: Mchy były wystawione na działanie pyłu atmosferycznego po erupcji wulkanu przez }2 miesiące. Próby były mineralizowane kwasem azotowym i nadtlenkiem wodoru. Zawartość Pb i Cd oznaczono za pomocą absorpcyjnej spektrometrii atomowej z elektrotermiczną atomizacją, a Zn, Fe, Mn, Cu i Cr za pomocą absorpcyjnej spektrometrii atomowej z atomizacją w płomieniu. Wyniki badań: Podczas przeprowadzenia doświadczenia zawartość ołowiu w mchach zwiększyła się o 54,9 μg/g, Cd o 3,41 μg/g, Mn o 150 μg/g, Fe o 6,09 mg/g, Zn o 514 μg/g, Cu o 20,77 μg/g oraz Cr o 6,99 μg/g. Wnioski: W Sosnowcu stwierdzono od kilku do kilkudziestu razy wyższe przyrosty zawartości oznaczanych metali niż w porównywanych miejscach, co wskazuje, iż pył wulkaniczny może być potencjalnym źródłem metali ciężkich w środowisku, a w konsekwencji wpływać na nasze zdrowie.

The trace fossil Zoophycos has been first time recognized in the Sudetes within the lower Carboniferous (upper Visean, crenistria Zone) of the Paprotnia Beds in the Bardo Unit. A distinct concentration of Zoophycos occurs in the lower part of the Paprotnia profile, in mudstones interbedded with bentonites, which were most likely deposited between storm wave base and fair weather wave base, in oxygenated water.

Long-term multipurpose geochemical studies in Lithuania show that the chemical composition of surface sediment can be used as an indicator of geological process: duration of weathering, soil formation and thickness of sediment. The chemical composition of upper and lower soil layers and of lake sediments gives information on past sedimentation: the type and age of Quaternary deposits and the location and depth of Pleistocene glaciolacustrine basins. We therefore have a baseline to predict changes in surface chemistry provoked by current anthropogenic pressures.

Additional data on the Lower Cambrian ichnotaxa from the Holy Cross Mountains are presented. Nine ichnotaxa are described for the first time from the area, additional descriptions of three known ichnotaxa are supplied, and two ichnotaxa are shown to have extended stratigraphic ranges. Most Lower Cambrian trace fossils belong to the Cruziana ichnofacies. The high taxonomic diversity of the Early Cambrian trace fossil assemblages from the Holy Cross Mountains in comparison to the trace fossil assemblages of the Mid- and Late Cambrian of the area is confirmed.

Borates at the Igdekoy-Doganlar locality were deposited in a Miocene lacustrine environment during periods of Paleogene to Early Quaternary volcanic activity. The mineral paragenesis consists of probertite – NaCaB5O7(OH)4 3H2O, ulexite - NaCa[B5O6(OH)6] · 5H2O, hydroboracite - CaMg[B3O4(OH)3]2 3H2O, colemanite - Ca[B3O4(OH)3] · H2O, halite, anhydrite, glauberite, smectite and illite. The major element, Ca, is higher in the lgdekoy-Doganlar deposits compared to the averages for andesite and the Earth's crust. Within the trace elements, notable enrichment is identified in Li, Se, As, Sb, Sr and Cs. Lithium and Se occur in sufficient concentrations to be considered as economically valuable by-products. B and Sr anomalies can be used as an important marker in the exploration for boron deposits. The Y/Ho ratio of the lgdekoy-Doganlar borates is close to chondritic values. The negative Ce anomaly in borates from the lgdekoy-Doganlar deposit suggests that deposition occurred under oxidative conditions. The Eu and Ce anomalies reflect a hydrothermal contribution of REE. Geochemical and geological data suggest that the lgdekoy-Doganlar borate deposits were formed in high-pH playa lakes that were discharged from volcanic and terrestrial environments under evaporative conditions due to the effect of arid-semi arid climate.

Upper Cretaceous to lower Palaeogene carbonate and siliciclastic deposits that crop out widely in the Haymana and Polatlı districts (Ankara Province) of the Haymana Basin (Central Anatolia) are rich in larger benthic foraminifera, various macrofossils and ichnofossils. The ichnofossils of the Haymana and Yeşilyurt formations were studied at five localities. The Upper Cretaceous siliciclastics of the Haymana Formation contain moderately diverse trace fossils, belonging to the deep-sea Nereites ichnofacies. The Paleocene siliciclastic and carbonate deposits of the Yeşilyurt Formation comprise similar trace fossils, which do not show significant changes in comparison to the Haymana Formation. This indicates that the K-Pg boundary extinction event did not affect the ichnofauna with any longer consequences. The Upper Cretaceous coarser, siliciclastic deposits of the Haymana and Beyobası formations are rich in shallow-marine, larger benthic foraminifera, including species of Orbitoides, Omphalocyclus, Siderolites, Hellenocyclina, and Loftusia, whereas fine siliciclastic deposits contain abundant planktonic, open-marine foraminifera, such as Globotruncana and Heterohelix. Palaeogene siliciclastic to carbonate deposits of the Kartal, Yeşilyurt and Çaldağ formations are rich in the larger, benthic foraminifera Nummulites, Discocyclina, Assilina and Alveolina. The larger foraminifers have been redeposited from nearby, shallow-marine parts of the basin.

Opis:
Structures, reported as the trace fossil, Paralanicichnites conflueris, were described from the Palaeogene rocks of the Kachchh (Kutch) District, Gujarat State, India, by Ghare and Badve as a new ichnogenus and ichnospecies. Restudy of the type specimens revealed that the form described as a burrow in fact is a scleractinian coral, as evidenced by its phaceloid morphology, septate calcareous exoskeleton, and twelve primary septa. It appears that there is also confusion regarding the exact geological formation, from which the specimens under consideration were taken by the original authors, as well as the age assigned by them.

We describe construction and investigation results of optical trace gas sensor working in the 3.334-3.337 μm spectral range. Laser spectroscopy was performed with a multipass cell. A setup was elaborated for detection of ethane at the 3.3368035 μm absorption line. Analysis of the gas spectra and the experiment have shown that, beside C2H6, the sensor is suitable for simultaneous detection of methane, formaldehyde and water vapor. Due to nonlinearity of the laser power characteristic we decided to detect the fourth harmonic of signal. Additional laser wavelength modulation was applied for optical interference suppression. In result, the precision of ethane detection of approximately 80 ppt has been achieved for the averaging time of 20 seconds. Long-term stability as well as the measurement linearity have also been positively tested. The system is suitable for detecting potential biomarkers directly in human breath.

The aim of this study was to assess the spatial distributions of total trace elements content in the bottom sediments of Dzierżno Duże water reservoir, along with the comparison of the accuracy and characteristics of Kriging and IDW interpolations. On the basis of regular measurement grid consisting of 53 points, bottom sediments samples were collected. Mean values of total trace elements content in bottom sediments of Dzierżno Duże were as follows: Zn – 410 mg/kg, Pb – 57 mg/kg, Cr – 36 mg/kg, Cu – 40 mg/kg, Cd – 5 mg/kg, Ni – 16 mg/kg and Ba – 267 mg/kg. According to the geochemical quality classification, the concentrations of Cd in 32% of samples were assigned to class IV (heavily contaminated), 45% to class III (contaminated), Zn in 42% samples to class III with 1 sample in class IV and 26% to class II (slightly contaminated), Pb in 9% to class III and 58% to class II, Cu in 4% to class III and 68% to class II, Cr in 17% to class II, Ni in 55% to class II, Ba in 8% to class III and 61% in class II. Coefficient of determination was determined between each case of trace elements content. The highest correlation (R2 in range from 0.81 to 0.96) was observed between Zn and Pb, Zn and Cu, Zn and Cr, Zn and Ni, Pb and Cu, Pb and Cr, Cu and Cr, Cr and Ni. Significant correlation (R2 in range from 0.70 to 0.80) occurred between: Zn and Cd, Pb and Ni, Cu and Ni, Cd and Ni. The lowest correlations (R2 in range from 0.25 to 0.70) were observed between concentration of Ba and the rest of trace elements. Two different interpolation methods were chosen for the purpose of generating spatial distributions – Inverse Distance Weighted and Ordinary Kriging. These methods were chosen for purpose of obtaining optimal accuracy result of spatial distributions. The distributions of trace elements content were classified by means of geochemical criteria. In the case of accuracy comparison between IDW and Ordinary Kriging, the former had slightly better results in terms of mean value and root mean square. The generated spatial distributions allowed to determine the most contaminated areas, which were mainly northern-central and southern-central parts of water Dzierżno Duże reservoir.

Objectives: The method for the determination of As, Al, Cd, Ni, Pb (toxic elements) and Cr, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn (essential elements) in human urine by the use of Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (quadrupole ICP-MS DRCe Elan, Perkin Elmer) with the dynamic reaction cell (DRC) was developed. Materials and Methods: The method has been applied for multi-element analysis of the urine of 16 non-exposed healthy volunteers and 27 workers employed in a copper smelter. The analysis was conducted after initial 10-fold dilution of the urine samples with 0,1% nitric acid. Rhodium was used as an internal standard. The method validation parameters such as detection limit, sensitivity, precision were described for all elements. Accuracy of the method was checked by the regular use of certified reference materials ClinCheck®-Control Urine (Recipe) as well as by participation of the laboratory in the German External Quality Assessment Scheme (G-EQUAS). Results: The detection limits (DL 3s) of the applied method were 0.025, 0.007, 0.002, 0.004, 0.004, 0.086, 0.037, 0.009, 0.016, 0.008, 0.064 (μg/l) for Al, As, Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn in urine, respectively. For each element linearity with correlation coefficient of at least 0.999 was determined. Spectral interferences from some of the ions were removed using DRC-e with addition of alternative gas: methane for cobalt, copper, cadmium, chromium, iron, manganese, nickel and rhodium, and oxygen for arsenic. Conclusions: The developed method allows to determine simultaneously eleven elements in the urine with low detection limits, high sensitivity and good accuracy. Moreover, the method is appropriate for the assessment of both environmental and occupational exposure.

In the Upper Permian continental to marginal-marine succession of the Southern Alps (Dolomites, north Italy), the ichnological record consists of diverse vertebrate footprints and non-diverse invertebrate trace fossils, mainly occurring in the “Bletterbach ichnoassociation” of the Val Gardena Sandstone Formation. After the Permian-Triassic Boundary event, vertebrate ichnoassociations are scarce until the Middle Triassic (Anisian), whereas the uppermost Permian-Lower Triassic Werfen Formation preserves a rich invertebrate trace-fossil record. To date, fish body and trace fossils (Undichna) are very rare in the pre- and post-extinction deposits of the Dolomites; only Undichna gosiutensis Gibert, 2001 was identified in the “Voltago Conglomerate” (Middle Anisian), whereas some unidentified fossil fish casts were found in the Permian Val Gardena Sandstone and some fish remains in the overlying Werfen Formation. Recently, for the first time, fish trails have been discovered in the Val Gardena Sandstone (Lopingian) and in the Werfen Formation (Campil member, Early Triassic, Smithian). Val Gardena Sandstone yielded Undichna cf. quina Trewin, 2000 and U. bina Anderson, 1976 and these represent the oldest fish trails found in the Southern Alps so far. Conversely, the specimens found in the Werfen Formation can be assigned to Undichna cf. britannica Higgs, 1988. They represent the oldest Mesozoic record of fish trace fossils in northern Italy and one of the few records of Undichna from marine environments. These trace fossils are consistent with the fossil association found in the two formations and reflect fish swimming activity in different environments: in very shallow, calm, brackish distal-floodplain to marginal-marine environments in the Late Permian, in association with abundant and diverse tetrapod tracks, and non-diverse invertebrate trace fossils, and in inter- to subtidal calm, shallow, marine environments in the Early Triassic, together with abundant, but not diverse invertebrate trace fossils.

If ichnotaxonomy is to be scientific, then its results must be repeatable. While some ichnotaxa are identified consistently, others are not, suggesting that ichnotaxonomy is not a mature science. When researchers disagree on the identification of a specimen, it suggests that closer examination is needed: an intermediate stage in the scientific method. But when ichnologists publish different names for the same trace fossils, multiple trials of classification have yielded different results, suggesting a failure of the hypotheses that led to the names. The burgeoning of invertebrate ichnology from the 1960s onward was made possible by demonstrating its utility to the petroleum industry; in part, this was accomplished by simplifying the ichnotaxonomy of common trace fossils to the point where a specialist was not required to make use of them in sedimentology and stratigraphy. The biological aspect of trace fossils, albeit of great interest, was downplayed in favour of a severely geometric approach. Ironically, this has had the effect of obscuring basic relationships of trace fossils and their palaeoenvironments that could be of great use to sedimentologists. Previous researchers have emphasized the value of a uniform approach in ichnotaxonomy. To accomplish this, ichnologists should take inspiration from the taxonomy of body fossils. Making ichnotaxonomy more replicable will take time and effort among investigators. In the long run, this can be accomplished by a holistic approach that includes close observation of trace fossils, standardized procedures of description and diagnosis, reinvestigation of type material, attention to bioprint (morphological traits that reveal the anatomical and ethological characteristics of the tracemakers; Rindsberg and Kopaska-Merkel, 2005), avoidance of taphonomic and human bias, and above all, cooperation.

Research concerning the effect of the application of waste sulfur pulp (doses: 10, 20, 30, 60 mg S • kg–1 d.m. of soil) on selected soil properties was carried out. The pulp contained sulfur in the elemental form. Before setting up the experiment, the soil had a slightly acid reaction (determination in 1 mol • dm–3 KCl) and was not contaminated with heavy metals. After conducting the incubation experiment, it was observed that the application of sulfur pulp led to a statistically significant (and proportional to the dose) increase in the content of available sulfur in soil. Application of waste caused a decrease in soil pH and an increase in the mobility and availability of Zn, Cd and Mn (extracted with 0.01 mol • dm–3 CaCl2). In relation to soil without waste, more Zn, Cd and Mn (by 4–51%, 9–24% and 0.1–31%, respectively) was determined. Liming reduced the acidifying effect of the introduced waste – after 150 days, only soil with the highest dose of sulfur pulp was characterized by a statistically significantly lower pH than the soil without the waste addition. An increase in the rate of sulfur oxidation was also observed – after 150 days of the experiment, more sulfate sulfur (by 14.4–34.5%) was determined, with respect to treatments of the unlimed series. A considerably lower content of Zn, Cd and Mn was determined in the limed soil than in the unlimed one. Regardless of waste dose and date of analysis, the soil contained a trace content of mobile forms of Cu, Cr, Ni and Pb.

The procedure of restorative proctocolectomy is associated with a complete removal of the colon and slight reduction of ileum length, which together can lead to systemic shortages of trace elements. Inflammatory changes in the pouch mucosa may also have some impact. However, there is no data on trace elements in pouchitis. Therefore, in the present study we aimed to assess the effect of acute pouchitis on the status of selected trace elements in rats. Restorative proctocolectomy with the construction of intestinal J-pouch was performed in twenty-four Wistar rats. Three weeks after the surgery, pouchitis was induced. Eight untreated rats created the control group. Liver concentrations of selected micronutrients (Zn, Cu, Co, Mn, Se) were measured in both groups six weeks later, using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Liver concentrations of trace elements did not differ between the study and the control groups. However, copper, cobalt and selenium concentrations [μg/g] were statistically lower (p<0.02, p<0.05 and p<0.04, respectively) in rats with severe pouchitis (n=9) as compared with rats with mild pouchitis (n=7) [median (range): Cu - 7.05 (3.02-14.57) vs 10.47 (5.16-14.97); Co - 0.55 (0.37-0.96) vs 0.61 (0.52-0.86); Se - 1.17 (0.69-1.54) vs 1.18 (0.29-1.91)]. In conclusion, it seems that acute pouchitis can lead to a significant deficiency of trace elements.

The pollution of surface water and sediments by heavy metals has become a difficult thing to deal with due to their toxicity and accumulative behavior. The present study was undertaken to provide information on the concentrations and distribution of selected heavy metals in surface water and sediments from Warri River, and to compute a contamination/pollution index of heavy metals. Surface water and sediment samples were collected using standard methods and then analysed for nine trace metals. These metals were determined using a Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer – UNICAM 929. According to our results, the mean concentrations of the select metals in the sediments were higher than those of the surface water. The figures, however, varied significantly in the six sample locations (SW1–SW6). In the sediments, the highest mean concentration was of Fe (504.13 mg/kg) in location SW1, whereas in surface water, generally, the highest mean concentration was of Fe (1.23 mg/l). In other words, mean metal levels in the sediments exceeded those of surface water. This indicates that sediments are a sink for metal pollution loads. Computation of contamination/ pollution index in sediment matrix revealed that Cd moderately polluted the sediment, Zn, Fe, Ni slightly, yet significantly contaminated the sediment, while Cu, Cr and Mn very slightly contaminated the sediments. The mean values of metals in this present study were compared with other values reported by other researchers. The higher than normal metal values were attributed to anthropogenic wastes, runoff, refinery jetty and varied petroleum related activities in the area.

Serpentine soils from 16 sample points in Serbia as well as the roots and shoots of eight Brassicaceae family species: Aethionema saxatile, Alyssum montanum, Alyssum repens, Cardamine plumieri, Erysimum linariifolium, Erysimum carniolicum, Isatis tinctoria, Rorippa lippizensis, were analyzed with regard to their concentrations of P, K, Fe, Ca, Mg, Ni, Zn, Mn, Cu, Cr, Cd, and Pb. Most of the soil samples were typical of ultramafi c sites with low concentrations of P, K and Ca and high concentrations of Mg, Fe, Ni and Zn. Ca/Mg ratio was <1 in most soil samples and Brassicaceae plants. Only in A. montanum, A. repens, E. linariifolium and R. lippizensis was the Ca/Mg ratio >1. The levels of P, K, Fe and Zn were high, Mn and Cu occurred in low amounts, whereas Cr, Cd, Co and Pb were only traceable. In the roots and shoots of A. montanum and A. repens the measured concentrations of Ni were 657 mg kg-1 and 676 mg kg-1 respectively, which is the fi rst instance that such high concentrations of Ni were detected in these two species.

Tectonic setting of both the uppermost Triassic Tomanová and the lowermost Jurassic Dudziniec formations can be characterized by a series of diagnostic discrimination diagrams. High-silica and low-silica multi-dimensional diagrams indicate that the sediments could have been deposited in the continental collision/rift setting. Diagrams of K2O/Na2O versus SiO2, SiO2/Al2O3 versus K2O/Na2O and Th-Co-Zr/10 as well as Th-Sc-Zr/10 determine an origin from the tectonically active and/or passive continental margin setting. REE parameters indicate predominantly a passive margin tectonic setting of the sediments. The most probable source of clastic admixture in the Scythian to Domerian sediments in the Tatric Unit was situated in a remnant of the Variscan collisional orogen - the Vindelician Highlands. Occasional monsoonal rains occurring in orbitally controlled cycles transported weathered material from the source area down river valleys on the seaward slopes of the Variscan Vindelician Mountains towards the Tethyan Sea. The Middle Ordovician Bukówka Formation, composed of fine-grained quartz sandstones with siltstone intercalations, belongs to the Kielce Region of the Holy Cross Mountains (peri-Baltic palaeogeographic position). It contains trace fossils of low diversity and poor preservation. Particularly noteworthy are the large Cruziana and Rusophycus, that are typical of peri-Gondwanan areas. They consist of casts of bilobate furrows showing diverse preservation. Other trace fossils include mostly horizontal pascichnia, cubichnia, and fodinichnia, but also vertical domichnia. The trace fossil assemblage is typical of the archetypal Cruziana and partly of the Skolithos ichnofacies. Some beds contain abundant orthid brachiopods. The trace fossils and sedimentary structures (horizontal, low-angle and wave ripple cross-laminations, hummocky cross-stratification) suggest deposition on the middle and lower shoreface with storm influence. The poor preservation and low diversity of the trace fossils are related to the homogeneous lithology, low accumulation rate, shallow burial of organic matter and strong bioturbation. Therefore, animals burrowed strongly but mostly in shallow tiers. Thus, the preservation potential of their traces was much lower than in many peri-Gondwanan sections but still higher than in Baltica sedimentary rocks. This explains the provincial differences in ichnofauna during the Ordovician, which at least partly were influenced by the preservation potential.

Runoff water is an important medium transporting various types of pollution originating from the atmosphere and washed out from roofing materials. The study presents a quality assessment of runoff from different roofs in the context of trace metal concentrations. The analysed rooftops were covered with copper, tar paper and ceramic tile. The quality of the rain water collected at the same time satisfies the demands of the first grade of cleanliness according to (Journal of Laws, 2016 item1187). The highest content of copper was leached from the copper roof, containing 10.23 mg∙dm-3. In the case of zinc, the highest concentration of 15.52 mg∙dm-3 was present in the runoff from the roof covered with thermally bonded tar paper. The amount of trace metals in the ceramic roof runoff was the lowest and only for zinc slightly exceeded 1.47 mg∙dm-3 – the value determined for II class of purity. In the paper, the different levels of heavy metals leaching from different roofing materials have been confirmed.

In this paper the trace fossil associations and the taphocoenoses from the Upper Visean Paprotnia Beds (Bardo Unit) have been compared. Eleven ichnogenera have been recognized (Zoophycos, Chondrites, Protovirgularia, Lockeia, Palaeophycus, Nereites, Planolites, Altichnus, Paleobuprestis, cf. Thalassinoides and ?daedaloid form). A new ichnospecies Paleobuprestis sudeticus has been defined herein. It is the oldest wood-boring trace fossil observed in macroscale and the first wood-boring trace fossil preserved on the archaeocalamites stems. Based on ichnodiversity and relative abundance of trace fossils in the investigated strata three ichnoassociations have been distinguished: Zoophycos–Chondrites–Palaeophycus, Palaeophycus–Nereites and Paleobuprestis. Vertical succession of both the taphocoenoses and ichnoassociations reflects the different colonization stages of the substrate and is linked to bathymetric changes in the marine basin from offshore to nearshore conditions in warm climate at low latitude. The Paprotnia profile is a unique record of the Asbian–Brigantian transition.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of neutralizing substances on the content of trace elements in maize on soil contaminated by heating oil. For the treatments without neutralizing substances, the dependency between increasing doses of heating oil and the cadmium content of plants was direct, yet the range of changes was relatively small. Under the influence of increasing doses of heating oil, the cadmium and manganese contents increased up to a dose of 10 g of oil per kg of soil, lead up to 15 g of oil per kg of soil and chromium within the full range of its doses, as compared to the control treatment (without heating oil). Higher doses of heating oil resulted in a decrease in cadmium, lead and manganese contents in maize. All of the tested substances had a significant effect on the content of trace elements in maize. Calcium oxide, zeolite and bentonite had a more pronounced effect than compost and nitrogen on the content of trace elements in this plant. A favourable effect, restricting the content of most of them in the maize was only observed for cadmium and manganese, in contrast to lead and chromium.

Although beneficial properties of mineral waters are acknowledged by law in many countries, the use of water for medicinal purposes is not universally accepted. Notably numerous waters (especially mineral and curative ones) have high concentrations of mineral and trace elements. These mineral waters are common on the market and their availability is not regulated by law. Due to the hazard of overdosing, quantification of trace elements and minerals seems to be necessary. The World Health Organization, European Standards and Polish Standards recommend different methods for elemental determination, i.e. spectrometry, photometry for zinc determination, colorimetry or spectrometry for copper, and ionic chromatography for calcium, chloride and fluoride. In this paper, alternative, electrochemical methods have been applied to determine zinc, copper, calcium, chloride and fluoride in most popular natural and curative waters from southern Poland. The determined elemental content varied between 3.85-33.54 μg L-1 for zinc, 85-15.33 μg L-1 for copper, 2.8-2433.63 mg L-1 for chloride, 0.4-1.66 mg L-1 for fluoride and 11.05-478.48 mg L-1 for calcium. The voltammetric method was tested according to the validation procedures, taking into account the following parametes: linearity range, limit of detection and limit of quantification and precision. The results show that the applied electroanalytical methods are suitable for determination of the selected elements in waters of natural origin, ensuring low instrumental and analysis costs while providing results comparable with ones achieved with recommended methods.

Trace fossils collected from the best outcrop of the Kamchia Formation have been analysed. There are thirteen ichnotaxa (Curvolithus simplex, Gyrochorte isp., ?Helminthoidichnites tenuis, Multina minima [second occurrence], Palaeophycus tubularis, ?Palaeophycus isp., Phycodes bilix, Phycosiphon incertum, Planolites cf. reinecki, Spongeliomorpha ?chevronensis, Squamodictyon tectiforme, Thalassinoides suevicus, Zoophycos isp.) representing different ethologic, toponomic and preservational types, and produced at different depths in the sediment. The ichnoassemblage contains a mixture of forms typical of flysch (Squamodictyon) and shelf deposits (Curvolithus, Gyrochorte). Probably, sediments of the Kamchia Formation were deposited in an offshore or deeper basin with storm deposition of sand beds and background marly sedimentation. It is possible that storm currents transported trace makers of the shelf trace fossils to the deeper sea. It is not excluded that the trace maker of Gyrochorte migrated to the deep-sea after the Jurassic. However, the simplest explanation is that the Kamchia ichnofauna represents an ecological transition between shelf and slope communities.

We provide the first reports of some rare trace fossils from the middle Turonian (Upper Cretaceous) of the Sudety Mountains (SW Poland, Upper Nysa Kłodzka Graben, Długopole Górne Quarry). These include burrows ?Ancorichnus isp., Asterosoma cf. ludwigae Schlirf, 2000, Asterosoma isp., cf. Phycodes isp., Dactyloidites ottoi (Geinitz, 1849), Funalichnus strangulatus (Fritsch, 1883), Phycodes cf. palmatus Hall, 1852, cf. Phycodes, Phycosiphon incertum Fischer-Ooster, 1858, ?Phycosiphon isp., Planolites beverleyensis (Billings, 1862) and borings Entobia isp. Some body fossils, bivalves ?Brachidontes sp., Lima canalifera Goldfuss, 1836, Pinna (Pinna) cretacea (Schlotheim, 1813) and Rhynchostreon suborbiculatum (Lamarck, 1801) are also reported. The trace fossil assemblage indicates a distal Skolithos ichnofacies and proximal Cruziana ichnofacies, which characterize a proximal and distal lower shoreface setting respectively. Sedimentation of the middle Turonian sandstones took place in a shallow epicontinental sea of normal salinity and a soft substrate, which was well-oxygenated under low-moderate hydrodynamic conditions. The presence of the oyster Rhynchostreon in the deposits studied suggests the influence of a warm Tethys Ocean.
