Opis:
Data for using natural chitosan for plant-induced resistance to diseases and physiological stresses are presented. Provision on the possibility of combining resistance inducer properties not only to diseases, but also to physiological stresses, is postulated. It is shown that treatment of tomatoes and tomato seeds with chitosan leads to both increased resistance and increased reproductive abilities of tomato plants. The biogenic elicitor chitosan, based on a "Agrohit" ("АгроХит") preparation, induces the resistance of tomatoes to Phytophtora infestan and Alternaria solani. The plants grown from seeds processed by chitosan exhibit less damage from pathogens during the vegetation period. The action of the elicitor influenced a change in terpenoid biogenesis (formation of a phytoalexinari chitin). Beside protection functions, this preparation has stimulating activity and can be used to achieve higher yields of tomatoes, which are tolerant to stress conditions. The use of elicitors for plant-induced resistance provides ecological safety and an economically significant improvement of the parameters of plant produce and storage.

The tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick), is a major worldwide pest of tomato crops, both in the greenhouse and in open field cultivations. Since this pest’s new introduction in Iran, it has caused extensive damage. Chemicals have mainly been used to control this pest. The purpose of our research was to identify the indigenous predators of the tomato leafminer, associated with tomato in the Borazjan region of the Bushehr province, Iran. From March to May 2014, infested tomato leaves were collected from protected tomato crops. A predator species from the family Miridae was found, reared, and identified as Nesidiocoris tenuis (Reuter 1895). This species is reported for the first time on tomato leafminer in Iran. Identification of important natural enemies provides a scientific basis for including these predators in the biological programs against this pest.

The effect of inert media and fertilization levels on nutrition status of green house tomato cv. ‘Maeva F₁’ was investigated. Mean microelement content was: 118.5 mg Fe, 51.7 mg Zn, 269.0 mg Mn and 11.43 mg Cu kg⁻¹ of dry mass of the index parts of the tomato (9–10 leaf form the top). No significant effect of rockwool, expanded clay and polyurethane foam on microelement contents was found in the index parts of the greenhouse tomato, except for zinc whose content was significantly higher in the leaves of the plants grown in rockwool and polyurethane foam than in expanded clay. Fertilization levels did not affect significantly the content of iron, manganese and copper in the index parts, except for zinc whose content lowered at higher fertilization level. High tolerance of the tomato plants to zinc and manganese content in feeding solutions was indicated. No phytotoxicity of zinc nor manganese was found at the content of 2.01 mg Zn and 1.78 mg Mn dm⁻³ of water or feeding solution.
Badano wpływ podłoży inertnych oraz poziomów nawożenia na stan odżywienia pomidora szklarniowego. Opis:
The effect of cultivar and soil substrate on the chemical composition of tomato fruit was studied in an experiment conducted over the years 2004-2006 in an unheated plastic tunnel. The experimental materials comprised eight tomato cultivars: Atut F1, Baron F1, Bekas F1, Carmello F1, Gracja F1, Ognik F1, Słonka F1, Terra F1, as well as two types of soil: peat substrate purchas and hotbed soil. Tomato fruit was assayed for the content of: dry matter, L-ascorbic acid, total sugars, simple sugars, organic acids and nitrates. The levels of dry matter and L-ascorbic acid in tomato fruit were found to be significantly dependent on both the cultivar and the cultivar-substrate interaction. Cultivar Atut F1 had the lowest water content of fruit, while cv. Terra F1 was the richest source of L-ascorbic acid. The fruit of tomato cultivars grown in hotbed soil accumulated more dry matter. Hotbed soil, compared to peat substrate, had a more beneficial influence on the concentrations of sugars and nitrates in tomato fruit. The average N-NO3 content of the fruit of the investigated tomato cultivars was below the maximum permissible level, whose exceedance would pose a hazard to human health. The fruit of all tomato cultivars accumulated more nitrates when grown in peat substrate. The lowest nitrate content was recorded in cv. Bekas F1.
Badania wpływu odmiany i podłoża zastosowanego w uprawie pomidora na skład chemiczny owoców przeprowadzono w nieogrzewanym tunelu foliowym w latach 2004-2006. Materiał do badań stanowiło osiem odmian pomidora: Atut F1, Baron F1, Bekas F1, Carmello F1, Gracja F1, Ognik F1, Słonka F1, Terra F1 oraz dwa podłoża: torfowe i ziemia inspektowa.

Opis:
Arbuscular mycorrhizae are endogenous fungi that form symbiotic association with the vast majority of vascular plants. They help to increase the nutrient uptake, especially phosphorus and to exploit a larger area of soil. Also, they improve soil aggregation, contribute to nutrient cycling processes in plants and improve their tolerance of heavy metal contamination or drought, as well as their susceptibility to root pathogens or herbivores. These fungi colonize the root epidermis and outer cortical layers and release bioactive molecules. The transcriptome and the proteome of plants are substantially altered. They have evolved multiple mechanisms that result in improvements in plant resistance to disease and plant growth and productivity, being included in a lot of combination of biofertilizers. In order to study these mechanisms, gamma irradiation was used to create mutants that are defective in their association. Culture under in vitro conditions is presented as method for maintaining the useful mutants in pure line.

Opis:
Juglone is a substance that limits plant growth and has a toxic effect on plant development. In this study, we analyzed the influence of juglone at two different concentrations (10−3 M and 10−4 M), which were applied to different parts of Solanum lycopersicum L. plants (root system, stem after decapitation, and surface of a younger leaf or after autografting) for a short period of time (7 days), on the morphology and histology of stems. At a lower concentration, juglone had positive effects on plant growth, which resulted in an increase in interfascicular cambial cell divisions, faster development of a continuous cambium layer along the stem circumference, and development of fibers. Additionally, under the influence of juglone, the number of developing leaves increased and adventitious roots developed. The results are discussed based on the current literature concerning the reaction of plants to juglone and to stress conditions.

The experiment was carried out in 2010–2012. The effect of different kinds of straw and its dose applied to soil mulching on the amount and fresh mass of weeds and yield level of broccoli and tomato was investigated. The type of straw mulch applied to the soil mulching influenced number and fresh mass of weeds. This effect could be the result of the properties of the mulch (colour, structure, etc.) or the allelopathic effect on the germination and growth of individual weed species. The most efficient for limiting infestation was mulch from buckwheat and rye straw. Soil mulching, regardless of its kind, causes a decrease in the number and mass of weeds at the beginning of growing period of vegetables. The application of straw at a dose of 20 t∙ha-1 had higher weed-suppressing effect than at a dose of 10 t∙ha-1. When assessing the infestation before harvest the influence of straw mulch was lower but still significant. The application in higher dose of rye and buckwheat straw in broccoli, corn and rape in tomato culti-vation reduced a number of weeds compared to dose of 10 t∙ha-1. The better yielding effect in both vegetable species had soil mulching with straw at a dose of 10 t∙ha-1.

The aim of the study was to examine reproductive and vegetative responses of ‘Growdena F1’ tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum L.) to use of potassium silicate fertilizer (as Silvit 15.0% SiO3) into reused peat substrate. Investigations were carried out at a greenhouse in 2013 and 2014. Tomatoes were treated with potassium silicate 2 times: immediately after tomato planting and a month later, at a rate of 0.11 g silicon (Si) per plant per year. Potassium silicate was applied as 1% water solution during plant irrigation. In each term, 200 ml Silvit of Si-containing solution per plant was applied. Plants unsupplied with potassium silicate serves as the control. The results showed that application of potassium silicate was able to improve tomato root healthiness, but only in the second year of the study, when the presence of pathogens in the tested substrate was high. The increases in marketable and total fruit yields as a result of use of potassium silicate was found only in 2014. It is concluded that at high multiplication of root pathogens in the substrate, the application of Sicontaining fertilizers do not protect sufficiently roots against infection.

The aim of study was to investigate the effect of two mycorrhizal fungus species Claroideoglomus etunicatum and Rhizophagus intraradices on the uptake of macronutrients and on the growth and yield of tomato hybrid plants cultivated in an ecological system. The experiment was carried out at an ecological farm in Grądy in the Lublin province of Poland, for three years (2015-2017). The experimental treatments included plants inoculated with Claroideoglomus etunicatum, Rhizophagus intraradices and plants without mycorrhizal inoculation used as a control. The mycorrhization of tomato roots with Claroideoglomus etunicatum and Rhizophagus intraradices resulted in an improved uptake of Ca and K through the plants. The length of the tomato roots, especially for the cultivars treated with Claroideoglomus etunicatum, were statistically longer than those of the control. Tomato roots inoculation with both of the studied mycorrhizal fungus strains significantly influenced the number of tomato leaves and improved the health status of the plant. The yield of tomato was not significantly affected by mycorrhization but Claroideoglomus etunicatum, to a greater extent than Rhizophagus intraradices reduced the yield of diseased fruit compared to the control. Among the studied mycorrhizal fungus species, better results were obtained with the application of Claroideoglomus etunicatum as compared with Rhizophagus intraradices for all examined features. Mycorrhizal inoculation contributed to the better growth of the plants, it improved their health and may be beneficially applied in the ecological production of tomatoes.

For several decades an increase of platinum in the environment was recorded. This is connected with the release of platinum from automobile catalytic converters and pharmaceutical industries. In the conducted experiments the effect of various forms and concentrations of platinum on the germination and roots growth of different plants (oat, garden cress and tomato) was investigated. Two separate experiments were performed with lower (experiment 1st: 1, 5 and 10 mg/L) and higher (experiment 2nd: 10, 20 and 40 mg/L) [Pt(NH3)4](NO3)2 or PtCl4 dosages. There was no significant effect of dose and form of platinum on the germination of seeds (experiment 1st and 2nd). The effect of platinum containing substances dose on root growth of young seedlings was observed during experiment, dependent on the species of tested plants. The root length of oat plants was similar in all treatments in experiment 1st. The shortest tomato roots were observed in the case of a 10 mg/L of PtCl4, it was statistically shorter than the control plants (treated with water) as well. The roots of the tomato treated with [Pt(NH3)4](NO3)2 were the same length as observed for the control sample. The garden cress root growth was not affected by [Pt(NH3)4](NO3)2, but a solution containing Pt4+ stimulated the root growth. The roots of tomato and oat treated with [Pt(NH3)4](NO3)2 had similar length as the control plants in contrast to the far shorter roots treated with PtCl4 (experiment 2nd). Moreover, the treatment with [Pt(NH3)4](NO3)2 stimulated the growth of garden cress roots compared to the control, while only the lowest dose of PtCl4 stimulated the root growth.

Given the importance to tomato production under heat stress conditions in hot climates of Pakistan, the objective of this research work was to study the influence of temperature and application of physical and chemical mutagens on tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.,) CV. “Rio grande” Seeds were treated with chemical mutagen (Ethyl Methane Sulphonate) and physical mutagen (Gamma radiation) . Plants were grown in open field conditions under day/night temperatures regimes at the experimental area of Department of Horticulture, faculty of crop and food sciences, PMAS-AAUR. The experiment was set twenty treatments and four replications in Complete Randomize Block Design. It is observed that by increasing dose of mutagens shows lethal effect and morphological parameters reduced significantly. But lower doses of EMS and Gamma radiation improve thermotolerance capacity significantly. Plants were investigated for different morphological parameters i.e Plant height, no. of leaves, leaf area, relative water contents of leaves, chlorophyll contents, cell viability (TCC Assay) and pollen germination. Among gamma rays 5Kr were the only dose which survived and bear fruits. Among EMS 4mM, 8 mM, 16mM performed better under heat stress conditions than other treatments

Opis:
The aim of the research was to determine the occurrence of primary dormancy in seeds of 18 tomato genotypes (Solanum lycopersicum L.) – 16 cultivars and two local genotypes – regenerated for the active collection of the National Institute for Horticultural Research. The plants were grown in the field in accordance with the adopted methodology of seed reproduction in the collection of genetic resources of vegetable plants. Tomato fruits were harvested twice a week from July 18 to September 26, 2019. Immediately after harvest, the seeds were extracted from the fruit, cleaned and dried according to FAO standards for gene banks. The seeds prepared in this way were stored for a period of sixty weeks at a temperature of 4±2°C in airtight containers with the addition of silica gel. During this period, after twenty, forty and sixty weeks of storage, their germination was tested. The studied tomato genotypes differed significantly in terms of depth of primary dormancy and rate of releasing from dormancy. Two of the tested cultivars – ‘Parteno’ and ‘Reper’, were characterized by seed dormancy at the level of 44.5% and 35.5%, two genotypes – ‘Amber’ and the local genotype POLPOB17-27 were characterized by dormancy levels of 15% and 18%. Seeds of two of the genotypes studied that did not show primary dormancy twenty weeks after harvest – ‘Zealand’ and the local genotype POLPOB17-28 – after storage for sixty weeks showed a reduced germination rate and a longer mean germination time. It is concluded that the optimum time for testing the germination of tomato seeds stored after harvest at 4 °C is forty weeks after harvest. The level of primary dormancy of the seeds is then the lowest, but the induction of secondary dormancy does not occur yet. When testing the seed germination in an earlier period, dormancy breaking procedures should be considered to obtain correct results.
