Opis:
This paper presents the Polish version of the Multiple Stimulus Types Ambiguity Tolerance Scale (MSTAT-II) developed by D. L. McLain: a short 13-item measure of an individual’s orientation, ranging from aversion to attraction, toward stimuli that are complex, unfamiliar, and insoluble. The aim of the study was to determine the validity and reliability of the scale. The participants in the study were 303 first-year students, aged 17 to 24: 234 women and 69 men. The authors chose this kind of sample because the significance of ambiguity tolerance should be particularly high in the case of the individual’s adaptation to the demands of a new and complex situation, such as the beginning of studies. Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the hypothesized one-factor structure of the model of ambiguity tolerance. The study also revealed a moderate positive relationship between MSTAT-II/PL scores and scores on the Tolerance for Ambiguity Scale (TAS) by Herman and colleagues, measuring ambiguity tolerance; MSTAT-II/PL scores were positively related to extraversion, openness to experience, conscientiousness, positive affect, and satisfaction with life, as well as negatively related to neuroticism and negative affect. The results obtained support the use of the Polish version of the Multiple Stimulus Types Ambiguity Tolerance Scale as a reliable (Cronbach’s α = .85) and valid measure of ambiguity tolerance.

Opis:
Previous research has suggested that high levels of Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety (FLCA) have a negative effect on foreign language learning (Horwitz, 2001; Lu & Liu, 2011) while moderate levels of Second Language Tolerance of Ambiguity (SLTA) are believed to boost foreign language learning (Ely, 1995). There is prima facie evidence that both dimensions are inversely related as Foreign Language Learning contexts are full of ambiguities which may contribute to anxiety. However, the relationship between FLCA and SLTA has been under-researched. The present study is an attempt to fill this gap by investigating the link between SLTA and FLCA in English of 73 secondary school students in Hong Kong. They filled out an online questionnaire consisting of the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (Horwitz, Horwitz, & Cope, 1986) and the Second Language Tolerance of Ambiguity Scale (Ely, 1995). Statistical analyses revealed that FLCA, SLTA and Self-rated English proficiency predict half of the variance in each other; in other words, students who were more tolerant of second language ambiguity were less anxious in their EFL classes and they also felt more proficient.

Opis:
Aim. The aim of the undertaken research is to explain to what extent the tolerance of uncertainty and ambiguity of the situation is associated with anxiety as a state and with anxiety as a trait. Methods. The survey was conducted in electronic form with the aid of a form created on the Profitest.pl platform. The Uncertainty Tolerance Scale (own translation), COPE, STAI and Ambiguity tolerance scale were used. The examined variables were: coping with stress, feeling of anxiety as a state and anxiety as a trait (explained variables); uncertainty tolerance and ambiguity tolerance (explanatory variables). Results and conclusion. The research shows that people who feel anxious in uncertainty situations can absorb it and start using it as a trait. It was also noted that the greater the tolerance of uncertainty they have to reply to, the worse they cope in critical ambiguity situations. It has also been found that in order to overcome discomfort in difficult situations, people use equal coping strategies. Greater ambiguity tolerance allows participants to experience less stress. On the other hand, the lower the tolerance, the more often they reach for emotional and instrumental support and focus on emotions. Originality. Understanding the mediating processes related to the studied phenomenon may be of fundamental importance in the development of support systems promoting the improvement of mental functioning of people who have problems with quick adaptation to changes and in the creation of appropriate prevention programs aimed at helping these people.

Opis:
The process of adaptation to professional career remains an important issue, especially in the domain of professional consultancy. This article aims at the analysis of the relationships between the occupational themes, the ambiguity tolerance level in career decisions and the style of coping with career decision-making difficulties. The study covered 227 students. The participants were assigned occupational themes according to the results obtained from a Multifaceted Occupational Preferences Assessment questionnaire. They have been analysed for the diversity in terms of ambiguity tolerance in career decision-making (Career Decisions Ambiguity Tolerance questionnaire) and the styles of coping with difficulties in career decisions (Coping with Career Decisionmaking Difficulties questionnaire). It has been established that sex is not related to the aforesaid personality dispositions. Persons with the social occupational theme seek social support more often than persons categorised as other types; the artistic theme is most closely connected with the unproductive coping style, while persons categorised as enterprising exhibit the opposite tendency. Furthermore, a correlation between the ambiguity tolerance and the productive coping style in career decisions has been noted.

Opis:
Proces adaptacji do kariery jest tematem istotnym, zwłaszcza w dziedzinie doradztwa zawodowego. Celem ar-tykułu była analiza zależności pomiędzy typem osobowości zawodowej, poziomem tolerancji niepewności w sytuacjach podejmowania decyzji zawodowych i stylem radzenia sobie z trudnościami w wyborze kariery zawodowej. Zbadano 227 studentów. Badanym przyporządkowano typy osobowości zawodowych według wyników otrzymanych drogą badania kwestionariuszem WOPZ. Poddane zostały analizie pod kątem zróżnicowania w zakresie tolerancji niepewności w sytuacji podejmowania decyzji zawodowych (Kwestionariusz tolerancji niepewności w sytuacji podejmowania decyzji zawodowych) i stosowanych stylów radzenia sobie z trudnościami w podejmowaniu decyzji zawodowych (Kwestionariusz radzenia sobie z trudnościami w wyborze kariery zawodowej). Ponadto zanotowano związek tolerancji niepewności z produktywnym stylem radzenia sobie w sytuacji podejmowania decyzji zawodowych.
The process of career adaptation is counted as a very significant topic, especially regarding career counseling. The aim of that article was to analyze the dependence between type of vocational personality, ambiguity tolerance level and styles of coping with career indecision making. There have been 227 students examined. Each of the examined individuals has got a vocational type of personality referring to gained outcomes from WOPZ questionnaire based on J.L. Holland’s model of vocational personality. Types of vocational personality have been being analyzed according to ambiguity tolerance in career decisions making (by using The Career Decision Ambiguity Tolerance Scale, CDAT) and strategies of coping with career indecision (with usage of Coping with Career Decision-making Difficulties, CCDD). The study has revealed that gender is not associated with personal dispositions as those mentioned above. Individuals characterized by Social type of vocational personality tend to seek help more often than those characterized by other types of vocational personality. Artistic type turned out to be linked to unproductive style of coping with career indecision more than any other type of vocational personality while individuals described as Enterprising type tend to have reversed tendency. Moreover, the present study has indicated that dependence between ambiguity tolerance and productive style of coping with career decisions making does occur.
