Opis:
TiO2-ZnO thin films have been prepared by using drop casting technique. The optical, structural, and morphological properties of nanostructured TiO2-ZnO thin films deposited by drop casting technique was studied by using several experimental techniques were used to characterize optical, structural, and morphological properties; X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) was used to study the crystal structures, the crystallite size, the dislocation density, and the number of crystallites per unit area of TiO2-ZnO thin films. The surface topography, surface roughness parameters, and average grain size for all samples were done by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) micrograph which confirm the existence of Nano-structured thin films. The optical energy gap of the TiO2-ZnO thin films was determined by using UV spectroscopy. It was found that one type of basic electrons transitions, through which the values of the optical energy gap for all the prepared thin films which are allowed direct transition.

Opis:
Removal of water soluble Reactive Black KN-B from aqueous media by means of titanium dioxide/attapulgite (TiO2/ATP) composites was studied in a batch system. The composites were investigated using X-ray diffraction and surface area analysis. Under UV irradiation, the photocatalytic effect of TiO2/ATP composites, pH and reaction temperature on the decolorization rate of Reactive Black KN-B were investigated in detail. The adsorption experiments of TiO2/ATP composites showed that the isotherms and adsorption kinetics were well followed by the Langmuir model and the zero order equation, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of TiO2/ATP composites for Reactive Black KN-B calculated by the Langmuir model was 20.08 mg g-1. It can be concluded that the TiO2/ATP composites could be good photocatalysts/adsorbents for treating Reactive Black KN-B wastewater.

The aim of the study was to compare the removal efficiency of toxic heavy metal ions: chromium(VI), nickel(II) and copper(II) as well as metal-complex dyes from aqueous solution using Lewatite VPOC 1065 and AdsorbsiaTM As500. The point of zero charge (pHPZC) of both sorbents and the influence of the initial concentration on the sorption process of Ni(II), Cu(II), Cr(VI), C.I. Acid Red 183 (AR183), C.I. Reactive Blue 21 (RB21) and nickel(II) phthalocyanine-tetrasulfonic acid tetrasodium salt (NiPc-TSATSS) were studied to determine the maximum sorption capacity. Kinetic studies were also carried out for the most effective sorbent-sorbate systems. The concentration effect of both hydrochloric acid and auxiliaries on the removal yield was also taken into account. As was found, Lewatit VPOC 1065 can be successfully applied for the treatment of textile wastewaters containing metal complex dyes and heavy metal ions. The highest sorption capacity, qe = 816.1 mg/g, was found for C.I. Acid Red 183.
Acid Red 183, C.I. Opis:
Nanoparticles (NPs) defined as particles having at least one dimension below 100 nm have been applied in the last decade in industry and medicine. Recently, there is an increased concern about the biohazard aspect of the presence of NP in consumer goods and in the environment. Silver NP (Ag NP) cause oxidative stress in mammalian cells in result of generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This results in genotoxicity and mutagenicity, disturbed mitochondrial respiration, slowed proliferation and cell death. Using the alkaline comet assay, we examined the effect of combined treatment with Ag NP 20 nm or 200 nm and X-rays (2 Gy) in HepG2 cells. In addition, combined treatment with X-rays and titanium dioxide NP (TiO2 NP) 21 nm was also studied. No effect of NP pre-treatment on X-ray induced initial deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) damage levels was observed for all three NP. In contrast, Ag NP treatment preceding exposure to X-rays caused a marked decrease in the rate of single strand break rejoining. The effect was particularly strong for Ag NP 20 nm. TiO2 NP pre-treatment had no effect on DNA repair.

In this paper, a dye modified titanium dioxide/graphene composite (DTG20) was prepared using direct grey D, a dye with good water solubility, as a modifier. Then the DTG20 and its intermediates, including TiO2 and titanium dioxide/graphene (TG), were finished on cotton fabric through the padding, coating and compounding methods, respectively. Photocatalytic properties of the treated fabrics were investigated using the MB simulated pollutant. It was found that the photodegradation efficiency of MB shown by DTG20 finished fabric treated with the compounding method can reach 90.55 %, and after four recycling experiments, the removal rate of MB can still reach 77.07 %. After being exposed to sunlight for 6 hours, the photodegradation efficiency of MB stained on the surface of DTG20 treated fabric can achieve 91.44 %; therefore, it also exhibited an excellent self-cleaning effect.

Opis:
The mechanical properties of cement paste modified by nano-TiO2 (nT) and nano-SiO2 (nS) were experimentally studied. The compressive strength increased first and then decreased with the increase of nanoparticle content. When nanoparticles were added into the cement paste as a filler to improve the microstructure, the two kinds of particles both could form a tighter mesh structure, which would enhance the density and strength of the structure. The elastic modulus increased rapidly with the increase of the nT content and reached a peak when the nanoparticle content is about 3%, which was about twice the elastic modulus of ordinary cement paste. The Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation results showed that the microstructure of cement was network connection and fiber tube. The hydration progress of ordinary cement slurry was insufficient, and many unreacted cement particles remained. With the addition of nanoparticles, the internal structure of the cement became denser, with fewer pore cracks, smaller pore diameters, more complex fiber tube arrangements, and significant anisotropy, thereby improving strength and mechanical properties.

Furfural, chemical compound very harmful to human health and difficult to degrade, is used or generated in many industries, including petrochemical, paper, and oil refining industries. The study evaluates the performance of Fe-TiCh nanoparticles for the removal of furfural in the presence of sunlight and UV radiation. Fe-TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared by the sol-gel method, and the characteristics of the resultant nanoparticles were determined using scanning electron microscopy. Samples with known concentrations of furfural and nanoparticles were individually exposed to sunlight and UV radiation under varying conditions, and the residual furfural concentration was measured using high- performance liquid chromatography. The results showed that for both processes the efficiency of furfural removal increased with increased reaction time, nanoparticle loading, and pH, whereas the efficiency decreased with increased furfural concentratioa The highest removal efficiencies of the Fe-TiCh/UV and Fe-TiCh/sun processes were 95 and 76%, respectively. In general, the degradation and elimination rate of furfural using Fe-TiO2/UV process was higher than Fe-TiCVsun process because TiO2 nanoparticles can only be activated upon irradiation with photons of light in the UV domain.

Opis:
In this study, ceramic TiO2 thin films were prepared on glass substrates using sol-gel and spin-coating methods from the TNBT/ AcOH/ EtOH/ H2O solution. The obtained coatings were subjected to drying at room temperature and were then calcined in the air at different temperatures in a range of 400–600°C in order to obtain clean TiO2   layers. The surface morphology and chemical composition were characterized with the use of a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDX). Research has shown the presence of elements in the TiO2   and the influence of temperatures on layer thickness. Analysis of optical properties and energy gap width of the prepared coatings was determined by means of spectra analysis of absorbance as a function of radiation energy obtained with the use of the UV-VIS spectrophotometer. The obtained spectra of the layers are characterized by a shift of absorption lines towards the visible light wavelengths and the obtained values of band gaps decrease as the calcination temperature rises. The obtained and developed results of TiO2   thin films testify to the wide application possibilities of the layers in elements which use photocatalytic processes such as self-cleaning surfaces, solar cells, pollution removing membranes and optoelectronic components.

This chapter describes the methodology of obtaining polylactide (PLA) biocomposites with the TiO2 modified by organosilicon compounds: disiloxane and functionalized octaspherosilicate designed for use in additive technologies. The paper presents general information about polylactide, titanium dioxide and the used organosilicon modifiers (silsesqioxanes and polysiloxanes). In the paper the authors compare the effect of two types of TiO2 from different manufacturers on the properties of polymer biocomposites, which can be used in biomedical applications. The properties of the obtained composites with the use of additive FDM technology were characterized mechanically (tensile strength, flexural strength, impact strength), and the particle size of the TiO2 pigment nanofillers used was measured. All the composites were pretreated using a plastic processing technique with two different mass ratios of TiO2 filler content (1.5%; 0.5%). The properties of PLA/TiO2 composites depend on the filler concentration. The applied fillers had a positive effect on the improvement of the mechanical properties of the produced polymer composites. This effect was additionally intensified by the introduction of organosilicon modifiers.

Purpose: The influence of UV radiation on the antibacterial properties of titanium oxide nanoparticles was examined using yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain for this purpose. Design/methodology/approach: Nanopowders were made with sol-gel method. Surface morphology studies of the obtained materials were made using Zeiss's Supra 35 scanning electron microscope. In order to confirm the chemical composition of observed nanopowders, qualitative tests were performed by means of spectroscopy of scattered X-ray energy using the Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS). The DLS (Dynamic Light Scattering) method was used to analyse the particle size distribution using the AntonPaar Litesizer 500 nanoparticle size analyser. Changes in particle size distribution at elevated temperatures were also observed. The antibacterial properties of titanium oxide nanoparticles were examined by subjecting the yeast sample to irradiation with an UV lamp. Findings: Samples containing yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae were irradiated with and without the addition of TiO2 nanoparticles. A faster decrease in the colony count was observed compared to irradiated exposures without the addition of a suspension. Practical implications: Presented materials can be used in the production of antibacterial coatings for surfaces occurring in public spaces such as schools, hospitals, public toilets for the simple and effective elimination of bacteria and fungi as a result of exposures. Originality/value: The antibacterial properties of titanium oxide nanoparticles under UV radiation were confirmed.
