Opis:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanical properties of beta type aged Ti-4Mo-4Cr-X (X = V, Sn, Zr) quaternary alloy for use as a cardiovascular stent. Titanium (Ti) alloys were fabricated using a vacuum arc remelting furnace process. To homogenize the specimens of each composition and remove the micro segregation, all cast specimens were subjected to homogenization at 850°C for 4 h, which was 100°C higher than the β-transus temperature of 750°C. The tensile strength and elongation of the aged Ti-4Mo-4Cr-X (X = V, Sn, Zr) alloys were increased as compared to the homogenized alloys. In addition, many α/β interface boundaries formed after aging treatment at 450°C, which acted as inhibitors of strain and caused an increase in tensile strength. The elongation of Ti-4Mo-4Cr-X alloys consisting of α + β phases after aging treatment was improved by greater than 30%. Results of a potentiodynamic polarization test showed that the lowest current density of Ti-4Mo-4Cr-4Sn with1.05 × 10-8 A/cm2 was obtained. The present Ti-4Mo-4Cr-X alloys showed better corrosion characteristics as compared to the 316L stainless steel and L605 (Co-Cr alloy) cardiovascular stent alloys.

To investigate the effect of Fe content on the correlation between the microstructure and mechanical properties in near-b titanium alloys, the Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-1Cr-xFe alloy system has been characterized in this study. As the Fe content increased, the number of nucleation sites and the volume fraction of the α phase decreased. We observed a significant difference in the shape and size of the α phase in the matrix before and after Fe addition. In addition, these morphological deformations were accompanied by a change in the shape of the α phase, which became increasingly discontinuous, and changed into globular-type α phase in the matrix. These phenomena affected the microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti alloys. Specimen #2 exhibited a high ultimate tensile strength (1071 MPa), which decreased with further addition of Fe.

Opis:
Recently titanium alloys and nickel alloys have become eminent for making aeronautic and astronautic parts. Since both nickel alloys and titanium alloys have a very small thermal conductivity, the being used tool will suffer from a huge damage by heat generated during cutting process. Therefore, there is a requirement for a durable tool with excellent cooling capacity. In this research, a new electro-deposited diamond tool for high speed cutting of nickel alloys and titanium alloys was developed and evaluated. The new tool is a cup shaped end mill, its body is made from copper (due to its superior heat conduction characteristics) and the platting layer for bonding the diamond grains #120 is nickel. The cooling system is an advancement of the former used heat pipe. Water is supplied from outside through a thin tube, that is integrated in the tool body. Thereby the effect of water evaporation, featuring a very large cooling capacity, could be applied. The assayed materials were Ti6Al4V and Inconel 718. The cutting conditions were investigated by some pre-experiments. It is concluded from the results that; (1) The cooling capacity of the new tool using water evaporation is very effective to maintain the grinding potential of electro-deposited diamond tools, (2) The new tool is effective for high speed grinding of nickel alloys and titanium alloys (3) The new tool and compulsory cooling system are economical and eco-friendly.

post-treatment of shape memory alloy
Opis:
In the case of shape memory alloys (SMA), a form to which a material is expected to return during heating can be repeatedly programmed, whereas other related properties can be individually adjusted. It was found that most producers of commercial assortment based on SMA as well as traders are seldom willing to lift the veil of secrecy on this topic. In the context of own experimental studies, the authors made a reference to the technical aspects of some post-treatments of a Ni-Ti alloy with a view to further practical application, e.g. the design and construction of machinery and structures with the involvement of SMA. For these purposes, high-temperature shape setting trials were carried out using various parameters of heat treatment with no secrecy surrounding the procedures applied. Some of the tested parameters proved effective, whereas some were less useful. Following the activation of the reverse transformation by heating, a somewhat different behaviour was observed, and simultaneously one of the crucial material temperatures was determined. The paper as a whole is reported from a specifically engineering/technical point of view, which is continuously emphasized in the content of the presented article.

The research comprises a discussion about a formation of intermetallic phase with stoichiometric composition Fe2Ti, called Laves phase, and influence of chromium on the whole structure containing this phase by means of comparison of the two alloys. A base Fe35Ni35Ti30 alloy was used as a reference and then compared with a Fe-Ni-Ti chromium doped - Fe30Ni35Ti30Cr5 alloy. The study of microstructure performed with scanning electron microscope enabled to distinguish different phases. These regions are rich in mixture of Fe-Ni and Ti-Ni elements. The identified phases are Fe2Ti and Ni3Ti which was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and simultaneously it is consistent with energy dispersive spectroscopy results. Differential scanning calorimetry confirmed also multi-phase composition. As a result different hardness was measured for these phases using nanoindentation. The overall hardness was established using the Vickers method.

Opis:
The main goal of the study was to carry out the treatment of cyclic oxidation of Ti alloy (Ti-1Al-1Mn) in air atmosphere. Based on measurements of mass gain of titanium alloy samples (Ti-1Al-1Mn) the kinetic oxidation curves during cyclic annealing were determined. The oxidized surface of the titanium alloy was carefully observed with optical microscopy equipment and the geometrical development, shape and surface morphology were defined. The phase composition of the obtained oxide layers on the Ti-alloy with qualitative analysis of the X-ray were defined. Since titanium alloys are among the most widely used metallic materials in dental prosthetics the corrosion measurements in a solution simulating the environment of the oral cavity were carried out. The results confirmed that the used titanium alloy easily covered with oxides layers, which to some extent inhibit the processes of electrochemical corrosion in artificial saliva solution.
W pracy zaprezentowano wyniki badań nad kinetyką narastania warstw tlenkowych w efekcie cyklicznego termicznego utleniania stopu Ti-1Al-1Mn. Zabiegi utleniania przeprowadzono podczas sześciu 1-godzinnych cykli wygrzewania w atmosferze powietrza.

Opis:
In this study, two different compositions of submicron-structured titanium (760 nm) and micron-structured chromium (4.66 μm) powders were mixed to fabricate Cr-31.2 mass% Ti alloys by vacuum hot-press sintering. The research imposed various hot-press sintering pressures (20, 35 and 50 MPa), while the sintering temperature maintained at 1250°C for 1h. The experimental results showed that the optimum parameters of the hot-press sintered Cr-31.2 mass% Ti alloys were 1250°C at 50 MPa for 1h. Also, the relative density reached 99.94%, the closed porosity decreased to 0.04% and the hardness and transverse rupture strength (TRS) values increased to 81.90 HRA and 448.53 MPa, respectively. Moreover, the electrical conductivity is enhanced to 1.58 × 104 S·cm-1 However, the grain growth generated during the high-temperature and high-pressure of the hot-press sintering process resulted in the grain coarsening phenomenon of the Cr-31.2 mass% Ti alloys after 1250°C hot-press sintering at 50 MPa for 1h. In addition, the Cr-31.2 mass% Ti alloys were fabricated with the submicron-structured titanium (760 nm) and chromium (588 nm) powders showed more effective compaction than the micron-structured titanium (760 nm) and chromium (4.66 μm) powders did. The closed porosity decreases to 0.02% and the hardness values increase to 83.23 HRA. However, the agglomeration phenomenon of the Cr phase and brittleness of the TiCr2 Laves phases easily led to a slight decrease in TRS (400.54 MPa).

This paper presents the research results of hammer forging process of a plane wheel rim forging from titanium alloy Ti6Al4V. The research works were divided into two stages. The first concerned the theoretical analysis based on numerical simulations of the worked out forging technology. Distributions of temperature, strain, damage criterion according to Cockroft-Latham, material flow kinematics and force parameters were evaluated. It was stated that the danger of overheating and material cracking in the forging does not exist. Large force values present in the process means that problems with tools durability may appear. Satisfactory results of the theoretical analysis provided the basis for conducting the second stage of the research works, that is experimental tests in industrial conditions. After dies making forging tests were made in one Polish forging plants, in which a product of good quality was obtained. Manufactured forgings were free from cracks, shape faults and fulfilled requirements concerning mechanical properties.
Dokonano oceny rozkładu temperatury, odkształcenia, kryterium zniszczenia według Cockrofta-Lathama, kinematyki płynięcia materiału i parametrów siłowych. Wykonane odkuwki pozbawione były pęknięć, wad kształtu i spełniały wymagania odnośnie własności mechanicznych.

Opis:
Prosthetic legs are mainly used to perform leg amputations more easily and sometimes the appearance is similar to a real leg. Different types of legs have been developed in recent days to be used in specific fields like running, cycling in sports and normal walking. The selection of materials and load bearing capacity of a leg determines its usage for any field of application. The behavior of prosthetic legs can be assessed properly by performing a finite element analysis on it with varying material properties and loads before it undergoes a designing and manufacturing stage. In the current study, Al alloy, Ti alloy, unidirectional Carbon fiber epoxy (UDCFE) and combined composite material which include (CF, UDCFE and Ti alloy) are used as materials for the prosthetic leg. A prosthetic leg model of C Type with its main parts being the sleeve, the rod and the base foot was designed initially by using the Solid Works 2010 software and the assembled file was imported to Ansys Workbench 2020 to perform a static and fatigue analysis. The static analysis was performed under four different load conditions, i.e. 60 kg, 70 kg, 80 kg and 90 kg, considering the different human weights of the body. A fatigue analysis was done by using the Soderberg method and applying a sinusoidal varying load for low cycle fatigue conditions. Theoretical calculations were also performed at various inclinations of foot 10°, 20°, and 30° with the ground and stresses were evaluated using finite element equations. The results obtained theoretically were compared with the analytical results. The best material which provided the lesser value of deformation and sustaining more loads with a lower value of the damage factor was selected for the design. Further experimental studies were suggested based on the results obtained from this work.

Opis:
Ti6Al4V, if used as an implant material is becoming replaced by other titanium based medical alloys due to the toxicity of vanadium. Anodic modification carried out to obtain nanoporous structures on this two-phase material leads to the formation of oxides only over а phase, vanadium rich ß phase oxide being etched [1,2] due to the high solubility of V-oxides. However, vanadium oxides having excellent conductive [3,4] and catalytic [5] properties, with ability to bind proteins [6] and similar to phosphates in the metabolic affinity to insulin mimics [7]. Such properties are prospective for using anodised nanotubular layer of the Ti6Al4V as a biosensor platform. Anodizing the Ti6Al4V alloy in phosphoric acid with fluoride ions gives nanotubes presented in Fig.1a, whereas using 99.0% ethylene glycol with 0.6% fluorides leads to formation of uniform 50nm diameter nanotubes on both phases Fig. 1b. To next experiments for thermal modification and electrochemical examination the most appropriate surface was obtained during anodization in 99% ethylene glycol with 0.6% of NH4F in 20V during 20min. Thermal modification was carried in 600PC in three atmospheres (air, argon and nitrogen), only modification in nitrogen does not affect on the nanotubes morphology, in other cases shape and nanotubular character of oxide layer changes to nonregular oxide structures. Corrosion potential, cyclic voltametry and EIS studies carried in PBS solution for each of thermally modified oxide surface confirmed unique electric properties of obtained layers. Obtained novel coating with nanotubular TiO2, Al2O3, and VOX and their conductive, biological and catalytic properties may be a bioactive and cell growth stimulating layer, a platform for high sensitive sensors, or nanodimensional electrode material.
