Opis:: Although English intellectual life frequently operates according to a story that stresses openness to ideals and thinkers from abroad, it is also the case that not all arrivals are equally welcomed. That was the fate that befell Zygmunt Bauman when he took up the Chair of Sociology at the University of Leeds in 1971. His first publication after his arrival was the English language translation of Klasa-ruch-elita: Studium socjologiczne dziejo´w angieskiego ruchu robotniczego, which had been originally published in Poland in 1960. The book was subjected to a hostile review by E. P. Thompson, and this paper seeks to understand the stakes of the attack. It is contended that Thompson’s review, along with his Open Letter to Leszek Kołakowski, reflects quite how open English intellectual life can be. This essay consequently looks in two directions; it is a specific analysis of the early English reception of Bauman’s work and also more generally a study of the parameters of the English intellectual idiom.

Opis:: Auditors need information on the performance of different statistical methods when applied to audit populations. The aim of the study was to examine the reliability and efficiency of a strategy combining systematic Monetary Unit Sampling and confidence intervals for the total error based on the Horvitz-Thompson estimator with normality assumption. This strategy is a possible alternative for testing audit populations with high error rates. Using real and simulated data sets, for the majority of populations, the interval coverage rate was lower than the assumed confidence level. In most cases confidence intervals were too wide to be of practical use to auditors. Confidence intervals tended to become wider as the observed error rate increased. Tests disclosed the distribution of the HorvitzThompson estimator was not normal. A detailed analysis of the distributions of the error amount in the examined real audit populations is also given.

Opis:: The aim of this paper is a short overview of the book of Evan Thompson Waking, Dreaming, Being. Self and Consciousness in Neuroscience, Meditation, and Philosophy, with some polemic remarks. Thompson presents an interesting approach to the problem of cognition, knowledge and selfknowledge the problems considered in philosophy, psychology, neurosciences, which if they interact create an interdisciplinary platform called “cognitive sciences”. However, Thompson proposes to bring on the debate within the field of a new discipline: contemplative neuroscience, for which he argues in the presented book. Using the methodology offered by this new kind of science he analyzes such phenomena as dream, perception, imagination, and even dying all of them in reference to the problem of what consciousness is.

Opis:: TheMoore-Gibson-Thompson [MGT] dynamics is considered. This third order in time evolution arises within the context of acoustic wave propagation with applications in high frequency ultrasound technology. The optimal boundary feedback control is constructed in order to have on-line regulation. The above requires wellposedness of the associated Algebraic Riccati Equation. The paper by Lasiecka and Triggiani (2022) recently contributed a comprehensive study of the Optimal Control Problem for the MGT-third order dynamics with boundary control, over an infinite time-horizon. A critical missing point in such a study is the issue of uniqueness (within a specific class) of the corresponding highly non-standard Algebraic Riccati Equation. The present note resolves this problem in the positive, thus completing the study of Lasiecka and Triggiani (2022) with the final goal of having on line feedback control, which is also optimal.

Opis:: The paper presents Lewis Campbell (1830–1908), his research on Plato, and the collection of letters sent to this Scottish scholar by: James Martineau (1805–1900), William Hepworth Thompson (1810–1886), Paul Shorey (1857–1934), Wincenty Lutosławski (1863–1954), Eduard Gottlob Zeller (1814–1908), Franz Susemihl (1826–1901), and Theodor Gomperz (1832–1912). This collection supplements the knowledge of the research on Plato’s dialogues at the turn of the 20th century, since Plato scholars in their letters touched on the issues relating to the methods and results of the research on the chronology of Plato’s dialogues. They made judgements concerning the works of other academics, they sent to each other their own publications, and reported on the progress of their studies. They also did not shy away from making personal remarks and communicating personal reflections.
Artykuł prezentuje postać Lewisa Campbella (1830–1908) i jego badania nad Platonem, a także korespondencję do tego szkockiego uczonego, której nadawcami byli: James Martineau (1805–1900), William Hepworth Thompson (1810–1886), Paul Shorey (1857–1934), Wincenty Lutosławski (1863–1954), Eduard Gottlob Zeller (1814–1908), Franz Susemihl (1826–1901), Theodor Gomperz (1832–1912). Korespondencja ta stanowi uzupełnienie wiedzy o badaniach nad dialogami Platona na przełomie XIX i XX w. Badacze Platona poruszali w niej bowiem problemy związane z metodami i wynikami badań nad chronologią dialogów Platona, wypowiadali oceny dotyczące publikacji innych autorów, przesyłali sobie własne prace i relacjonowali postępy badań. Nie unikali także uwag personalnych i refleksji osobistych.

Opis:: Design‑based estimation of finite population parameters such as totals usually relies on the knowledge of inclusion probabilities characterising the sampling design. They are directly incorporated into sampling weights and estimators. However, for some useful sampling designs, these probabilities may remain unknown. In such a case, they may often be estimated in a simulation experiment which is carried out by repeatedly generating samples using the same sampling scheme and counting occurrences of individual units. By replacing unknown inclusion probabilities with such estimates, design‑based population total estimates may be computed. The calculation of required sample replication numbers remains an important challenge in such an approach. In this paper, a new procedure is proposed that might lead to the reduction in computational complexity of simulations.
Estymacja parametrów populacji skończonych i ustalonych, prowadzona w ramach podejścia randomizacyjnego, zazwyczaj wymaga znajomości prawdopodobieństw inkluzji charakteryzujących schemat losowania próby. Są one bezpośrednio wykorzystywane w celu wyznaczenia wag przypisanych poszczególnym wylosowanym jednostkom i uwzględniane podczas obliczania estymatorów. Jednak dla pewnych użytecznych schematów losowania pozostają nieznane. W takim wypadku możliwe jest ich wyznaczenie na drodze symulacyjnej, poprzez wielokrotne losowanie prób z wykorzystaniem tego samego schematu losowania i zliczanie wystąpień poszczególnych jednostek populacji. Zastępując nieznane prawdopodobieństwa inkluzji oszacowaniami uzyskanymi w wyniku takiego eksperymentu, otrzymuje się oszacowania wartości globalnej badanej cechy populacji. Szczególnym wyzwaniem podczas takiego postępowania jest wyznaczenie liczby replikacji próby, zapewniającej wymaganą precyzję estymacji. W niniejszym artykule proponowana jest nowa procedura, która może przyczynić się do zmniejszenia złożoności obliczeniowej eksperymentu symulacyjnego.

Opis:: Artykuł podejmuje zagadnienie aplikowalności sarmatyzmu, jego ideologii, wrażliwości i obyczajowości etc., do współczesnego polskiego dyskursu tożsamościowego. Odniesieniem dla podjętych rozważań są głównie prace Ewy Thompson i Jana Sowy. Naczelna idea artykułu wyraża się w przekonaniu, że traktowanie sarmatyzmu jako projektu autonomicznego (Thompson) bądź jako formy tożsamości, którą da się zrestytuować (neosarmatyzm), jawi się jako bezcelowe. Każda (re)interpretacja sarmatyzmu powinna być obliczona na realizację w ramach określonej celowości (kultura artystyczna, dyskurs akademicki etc.).
The article addresses the problem of the applicability of sarmatism, its ideology, sensitivity, lifestyle, etc., to the contemporary Polish identity discourse. The reference for the considerations is mainly the works of Jan Sowa and Ewa Thompson. The main idea of the article is that the treatment of sarmatism either as an autonomous project (Thompson) or as a recoverable identity (neosarmatism) is impossible and pointless. Any (re)interpretation of sarmatism should take into account the specific purposefulness that can be realized in a specific field (artistic culture, academic discourse, etc.).
