Opis:
There are two fundamental questions that this paper tries to answer: how Zubiri knows God, and whether we can consider his philosophy to be mysticism. The greatest part of the analysis considers the last ten years of his philosophical activity. The first part of the paper analyzes the mature form of his method, which Zubiri revealed in his Trilogy. A brief presentation is made of primordial apprehension, logos and reason. Zubiri’s method goes beyond orthodox phenomenology, because he finds a need also to include metaphysics. The second part of the article applies this method in order to know God. It begins with an analysis of the person in the process of construction of its I. Zubiri analyzes this mostly in Man and God. We can access God only on the metaphysical level of knowledge. On this path he rejects logic and speculation. On our way to know God we must confront the presumed sketch of God with human personal life. We can discover human life only by following strictly the sui generis phenomenological method. The conclusion that Zubiri reaches is that there is a personal absolute God, who influences humans in the construction of the I through the reality of things. On certain conditions, we can call Zubiri’s approach to philosophy a mystical one. This is due to the constant action of God creating a certain tension between the person and reality and a need for a personal answer to the divine action.

One advantage of AMI is the ability to Demand Side Management. The ability to control the client devices (Load management) is one of the key function of AMI. Some customers with smart meters and Time-of-Use (TOU) tariffs pay different amounts for their electricity over three (or two) different time periods. They can program their smart appliances. Customer's devices are switched-on when energy is cheaper, and switched-off when it is more expensive. If clients on a massive scale will run their devices at a time when energy is cheaper, then it would affect the bulk electric grid.

Opis:
The Power by Naomi Alderman offers a dystopian vision of the world in which girls and women develop the ability to produce electric current. The power is both a blessing and a curse since it enables women to stand up to oppression and upturn male dominance, but also turns their bodies into lethal weapons. The following article aims to analyse depictions of women and girls in the novel while taking into consideration their entanglement in religion, organised crime, and politics. The analysis includes two perspectives, ecofeminist and posthuman. The power, on the one hand, can be seen as an emblem of rediscovered interconnection between people and the forces of nature or animals. On the other hand, the depictions of women make them resemble cyborgs, combinations of living organisms and machines. Moreover, the article comments on the utopian potential of the world presented in the novel, and on the dystopian outcomes of the described shift of power.

Zubiri does not accept the classical phenomenological concept of religion which unites religion with sacrum. He is constructing his own metaphysical concept of religion which he unites with the power that has reality. According to Zubiri, religion has its origin in power of the real which allows a person to have personal life. Zubiri’s concept of religion allows to evaluate particular religions acknowledging that they may be more or less true. It is impossible for phenomenology of religion.

Opis:
Polska Partia Socjalistyczna, called “reborn” by its supporters, and “licensed” or “false” by its antagonists, was created on 10th–11th September 1944, during a socialists’ conference held in Lublin (so-called 15th Congress of the PSP). The power elite in the party was made up of 57 people in total. It was a circle dominated by well educated men, mostly young and middle-aged, most of whom had been bound up with the party since the 1920s and 30s. On average, every second one of them was in the occupied country between 1939 and 1945, and only every eighth in the Soviet Union. Despite this, one should not underestimate the influence of the so-called “natives” in the PSP elite, since they were functioning within two, ideologically different, streants of Polish socialism. That was why they found it relatively easy to sever links with their socialist past and made their way into the ranks of the newly created Communist authorities.

Opis:
W celu dowiedzenia postawionej tezy, artykuł analizuje reprezentację przestrzeni i społeczeństwa w Mocy i chwale (1940), powieści, której akcja toczy się podczas religijnych prześladowań w Meksyku w latach dwudziestych dwudziestego wieku. Porównuję utwór Greene’a z powieścią Pedro Páramo Juana Rulfo (1955), gdyż powieść ta opisuje ten sam okres, a krajobrazy w niej opisane przypominają te z powieści Greene’a. Tym samym artykuł proponuje redefinicję idei Greeneland.
Graham Greene was a frequent traveler and he commonly chose different spaces around the world as settings for his novels. Critics have generally agreed, however, that the British author created in his novels an a-topos, a space that conformed not to the reality of the country depicted, but to the development of the topics, spiritual or political, with which Greene was obsessed. That atopical location became over time what has been called Greeneland, a concept with which any Greene scholar inevitably becomes familiar. In this paper, I revisit the concept of Greeneland, arguing that scholars tend to focus on the major themes present in Greene’s literary world and to ignore the fact that a close analysis of the fictional landscape in his work challenges the assertion that what Greene created in his novels was a mental entity, a non-place. In order to do so, I focus on the representation of space and society in Greene’s The Power and the Glory (1940), the Mexico of the religious persecution of the late 1920s. I compare Greene’s representation with the Mexico of the same period depicted in Juan Rulfo’s Pedro Páramo (1955), a novel whose fictional landscape bears uncanny resemblances to the one described in The Power and the Glory. This analysis leads us to rethink the concept of Greeneland as generally defined in the criticism.

The author of the article characterised the interdependences between the Emperor and the authorities of the Knights Hospitaller, as well as the legislative, executive and judicial powers of the state of the Knights of Malta. In the article some fragments of the Emperor's privilege are cited in Polish and in Latin (in the footnotes). The article contains also a short historical outline of Malta and its political system between the 11th and 16th century. The interdependences between the Kingdom of Sicily and Malta are also mentioned. The relationships between the Maltese Catholic Church and the Order of St John are also described, as well as the way of choosing the Bishop of Mdina.

James S. Coleman proposed the power of a collectivity to act as a measure of the ease with which the individual interests of one member can be transformed into the collective action of a voting body, or into decisions being undertaken by that body which go against the interests of the voters. It was also to be applied in simple voting games, for which the vote threshold was set at a lower level than the majority of votes. Coleman based his model for determining the power of a collectivity to act on the classical definition of probability. In practice, the index is calculated as a quotient of the number of winning coalitions and of all possible coalitions which can be formed by the players – under the existing voting rule. The central hypothesis of the article has as its premise that in proper, simple nperson voting games the Coleman index does not determine passage probability, but only the probability of drawing a winning coalition from the set of all possible combinations of members of the voting body. A new index has also been proposed which should serve to determine a collectivity’s power to act.

Opis:
The transformation of ugly into beautiful is a feature of decadent literature. The embellishment of ugliness was important for the decadents to distinguish themselves from the followers of Classicism, who rejected the close representation of ugliness, from the naturalists who inserted ugliness in their works for the sake of a faithful representation of reality, and from such writers and theorists, who allowed the representation of ugliness only on condition that it turns the attention to its opposite, i.e. the beauty. The decadents, by inserting ugly subjects in their works, wanted to prove the power of art, which can embellish ugliness too. By their artistic solutions, the decadents showed that ugly subjects need not be banished from literature, because the form of a work is more interesting than the subject. Huysmans writes on his hero, Duke Des Esseintes: “only the work of his brain [the writer’s] insterested him, regardless of the subject” (2009: 244). The decadent embellishment of ugliness had influence on the later periods of literature too. Even if there are important differences between Decadence and Avant-garde, the concept that art can embellish ugliness was a prior condition of the birth of the historical Avant-garde trends.

The Power of the Word III International Conference
Word Made Flesh : Flesh Made Word
University of Gdańsk
Opis:
Organised jointly by Heythrop College, University of London; the Institute of English Studies, School of Advanced Study, University of London; and the Faculty of Languages of the University of Gdańsk. The third Power of the Word conference, to be held this time in Gdańsk, Poland on 12-14 September 2013, focuses on the themes of revelation, incarnation and human embodiment in relation to poetry. It seeks to take further a dialogue inaugurated by Heythrop College, University of London, in 2011, where the first conference was held, and continued at the Institute of English Studies, School of Advanced Study (also University of London) in 2012, between theologians, philosophers, literary scholars and creative writers. The Power of the Word conferences explore connections and disconnections, continuities and discontinuities between religious experience, religious practice, theological reflection, biblical interpretation, ethics and spirituality on the one hand and poetry on the other. These explorations focus attention both on explicitly religious poetry and on that which is (sometimes emphatically) not. Central questions for this year’s conference might include, for example: is poetry, as Eliot suggested, an instance of the word made flesh? And if it is, how and under what conditions is this so? Is this idea of poetry, if it is true, applicable only to explicitly religious or devotional poetry? In what sense and to what extent might poetry be said to partake, in a Christian perspective, of the mystery of the Incarnation, as poets and theologians have claimed? On the other hand, what of the view that poetry is nothing more (nor less) than an expression in words of our embodied selves and the material world? Are these two perspectives mutually exclusive? The conference, interdisciplinary and ecumenical in scope, encourages theoretical discussion as well as analysis of specific texts and reflection on the work of particular authors, poets and thinkers of different countries, cultures and religious traditions. The beautiful Hanseatic city of Gdańsk provides a fitting setting for such reflection. Its rich cultural history involves diverse religious traditions, well evoked, for example, in Gunter Grass’s The Tin Drum. The home of the Solidarity movement, it has always been a hospitable city that has welcomed visitors and enjoyed cultural variety; while its connections with literature in English go back to Shakespeare’s time, when the city had an Elizabethan theatre stage that was used by English itinerant players. The University of Gdańsk is situated midway between the city centre and the spa town of Sopot, not far from the historic cathedral of Oliwa. Confirmed keynote speakers: Revd Professor David Brown (Institute for Theology, Imagination & the Arts, St Mary's College, University of St Andrews), Professor Michael Edwards (Collège de France), Professor Angela Leighton (Trinity College, Cambridge), Professor Tadeusz Sławek (University of Silesia), Professor Andrzej Wierciński (University of Freiburg). As discussed in this article, there is a clear disparity in these relations. While the Lithuanian language adopted a lot of Polonisms (maybe even about 3,000), Lithuanian borrowings in the general Polish language are a resource of at most a dozen or so words. This can be explained by the power of the Polish language. Polish loans in Lithuanian are mostly old words (extracted from documents from the sixteenth–eighteenth centuries), including those originating from Western European languages. Thanks to them, the Polish language has enabled and strengthened cultural transmission, perpetuating the position of Lithuania in the sphere of Western (Latin) culture.
Można to wyjaśnić mocą języka polskiego. Polonizmy w litewszczyźnie to przede wszystkim dawne wyrazy (wynotowane z dokumentów z XVI–XVIII wieku). Są w tej grupie słowa przejęte z języków zachodnioeuropejskich. Dzięki nim polszczyzna umożliwiła i wzmocniła transmisję kulturową, utrwalając pozycję Litwy w kręgu kultury zachodniej (łacińskiej).
