    The present article seeks to analyse the figure of the Wandering Jew in five 20thcentury French novels (Carnet de route du Juif errant by Alexandre Arnoux, Les Entretiens d’Ahasvérus by Louis de Launay, Marches du Juif errant by Henry-Jacques, Jésus raconté par le Juif errant by Edmond Fleg and Histoire du Juif errant by Jean d’Ormesson). Its main goal is to answer the question to what extent the original image of the Jew is reproduced in the abovementioned prose works. In order to carry out his plan, the author takes into account the crucial and stereotypical characteristics which constitute the very nature of the Jewish vagabond. He tries then to point out major differences between the five novels and the popular version of the Ahasverian legend. The study of those elements shows that contemporary texts related to the immortal man break off with the traditional version of the legend and thus bear testimony of the so-called “death of the myth”.

    In the very beginning of the 17th century appears a famous legend of the Wandering Jew named Ahasverus, who is characterised by some immutable features. Since then, the story has inspired various artists and despite the passage of time it keeps on arousing a great interest among both writers and readers. The main goal of the present study is to compare the collective protagonist from The Book of Abraham, a twentieth century novel by Marek Halter, to the legendary figure. Therefore, we present a vast and accurate picture of the interactions between the Jewish protagonists from Halter’s novel to the features typical of Ahasuerus.

    This article focuses on the topos of Ahaswer (The Wandering Jew) in Piotr Bednarski’s trilogy Błękitne śniegi i inne rejsy po złote runo. The creation of the main character of the series is analysed in the light of the author using the already established scenario provided by culture in the form of a legend of Ahaswer. Bednarski chooses the figure of the Wandering Jew as the one which most aptly reflects the life situation of the protagonist-narrator of the trilogy.The author emphasises chiefly two aspects of the meaning of the discussed motif in culture. The character of Ashwer is used as synonymous to Jewishness and as a universal representation of the lot of a wanderer.

    This article is an attempt to provide an insight into the fate of the Jewish diaspora in Zagreb, a city marked by the spectre of the Second World War. The events in the diegetic world are based on the fictionalised, tragic life of a young Jewish actress Lea Deutsch (1927-1943), who was acclaimed a prodigy of the Zagreb theatre scene and was killed in Auschwitz. Miljenko Jergović undertook the difficult task of addressing Croatian antisemitism, the circumstances surrounding the creation of the Independent State of Croatia (1941-1945), of which the darkest outcome was the Jasenovac concentration camp. The analysis of the work is part of a wide-ranging discussion on the acceptable ways to depict the Holocaust (language and form). The Croatian writer's novel highlights the topos of the eternally wandering Jew; he also dispels the myth about small promised lands in the history of Jews, who were scattered across Europe and had to face local exclusion, antisemitism and ghettoisation.

    W artykule autor podejmuje próbę spojrzenia na topos Żyda Wiecznego Tułacza w dwóch utworach prozatorskich pisarza rosyjskiego Własa Doroszewicza (1865–1922) w duchu poetyki kognitywnej. W tym celu wykorzystuje teorię światów dyskursu. Pozwala mu to na zrozumienie tego, co dzieje się w umyśle czytelnika podczas recepcji wymienionego toposu oraz na głębsze poznanie mechanizmów warunkujących myśli i emocje odbiorcy.
    This study is intended to explore the topos of the Wandering Jew in two narrative texts by Russian writer Vlas Mikhailovich Doroshevich (1865–1922). Working within the domain of cognitive poetics, and the theory of discourse worlds in particular, Witold Kowalczyk focuses upon the mechanisms through which the topos is conceptualized, as well as on the reader’s intellectual and emotional engagement in the texts.

    Opis:
    Aleksander Wat’s novella The Wandering Jew, published in 1926, is his only prose text in which the Jewish motif is the very center of the narrative. Wat carefully avoids dramatic or frightening notes, staying away from the characters created by Potocki, Quinet, Schubart, and Meyrink. However, certain aspects of the old version of the ancient myth remain: the millennial peregrination through history, the absolute solitude of the hero, and his magical movement and appearance in different parts of the world. The fusion of Catholicism and communism in the shadow of Marranism, represented by the protagonist Nathan, reflects grotesquely either on the phenomenon of Jewish youth fleeing the shtetls observed by young Wat, or on his own ecumenical dreams and reflections on the metahistorical role of Jews and their conversion. The article analyzes this issue also with particular regard either to the reception of the old Christian legend, or to the Anti-semitic narrative on the conspiracy of Jewish converts, shared by Keith Gilbert Chesterton, a contemporary writer very important for Wat.
