- The article is an attempt to illustrate the persecution of the Spanish Church in the twentieth century, with particular reference to the thirties. The first section provides a general characteristics of the Spanish church and its contribution to Christianity around the world. The second section presents the initial repressions in the nineteenth century, which intensified in the next century. This perspective makes it easier to understand brutal persecution of Christians during the civil war described in in the third section of the article. The fourth section outlines the reaction of the Church to the situation. The fifth section presents an overview of the effects of the tense relationship between the state and the Church.
