Opis:
Boccaccio’s Decameron is, as we know, the supreme achievement of the medieval narratio brevis. The art of speaking and, in general, of the proficient use of words, is what distinguishes the “gentile brigata” of ten young men and women who articulate and advance the new ars narrandi. Its role is crucial in many of the novellas in The Decameron: thanks to their capacity to persuade, or rather to manipulate their listeners verbally, many of its male and female protagonists manage to avoid dangers and unpleasant situations, or to get what they want: love, money, or other advantages. Particularly two of the male protagonists, ser Ciappelletto and frate Cipolla, excel others in verbal fraud and mockery. The anonymous protagonist of the third novella of the Third Day is neither as famous nor as examined by critics, even though she is very clever in her rhetorical and theatrical skills. The purpose of this essay is to analyse the strategies of verbal and emotional manipulation which lead her to seduce a “valoroso uomo di mezza età” with the involuntary help of the simple-minded and credulous friar.

Opis:
The Decameron 2020 started in Croatia as an online literary event in the time of the first quarantine caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and resulted in an e-book of fifty-two selected short stories. Its initiators and editors, Ana Cerovac, Vesna Kurilić and Antonija Mežnarić, recognized the peculiarity of the experience of living in the end times, as well as the potential for comparison of the e-book with Boccaccio’s classic, and set up an online space where authors from Croatia and the region could ( re )create or transform their experiences, or reflect upon them. This paper focuses on four stories from the collection in which nature is givenspecial significance: Algernonova osveta (Algernon’s Revenge) by Nataša Milić, Zaražena (Infected) bySunčica Mamula, Redukcije(Reductions) byAnaKutleša and 2030 byRadmila Rakas. It investigates the range of feelings and attitudes towardsnature in the time of pandemic and quarantine, as reflected in these four stories.

Opis:
In the Introduction to the First Day of the Decameron Giovanni Boccaccio depicts the Black Death pandemic and also portrays the devastating effects of death on emotional states of Florentines. Although the plague doesn’t enter the artistically ordered world of the Decameron’s storytellers, death and fear are still present in the novellas. Therefore, a question may arise, how is it possible that the novellas which were written to bring comfort often show dramatic events? To approach this issue the article aims to examine various relations between love and fear. It turns out that in the reconstruction of the world devastated by the plague, it may be helpful, among other things, to return to the ancient chivalrous values and the concept of courtly love, which only noble individuals can truly experience. What is important, nobility of spirit according to Boccaccio is not determined by either gender or social origin.

Opis:
The present contribution focuses on the presence of Gulag argot in Julija Nikolaevna Voznesenskaja’s The Women’s Decameron, more specifically on the short stories told by Zina, the former Lager prisoner by means of linguistic analysis and the recently published Dictionary of Russian Slang Expressions: The Lexicon of Penal Servitude and Camps in Imperial and Soviet Russia by Leonid Gorodin. The following study aims to describe the aforementioned stylistic strategy from The Women’s Decameron as a form of skaz, but also to underline how language works in this context as lieu de mémoire. It is possible to define the Gulag argot as a site of memory, especially when considering the recent study and exhibition by the Gulag Museum in Moscow, named The Language of Unfreedom. This exhibition called attention to the extent in which the lexicon of Gulags has become part of everyday language, its violent heritage ignored, and this original violence underplayed. The work of the Gulag Museum in Moscow underlines the important role of language in preserving history. The memory of Gulag camps is also a recurring theme in Julija Voznesenskaja’s literary and journalistic work; therefore, the usage of Gulag argot cannot be interpreted only as a literary motif, but also as a way to preserve the tragic memory of concentration camps.

Opis:
Russian folktales which belong to ‘The wager on the wife’s chastity’ type (882 in The Aarne–Thompson tale type index) owe their origin to the tale of Zinevra from “The Decameron” (II, 9) by Giovanni Boccaccio. Adapted by the Old Russian literature, it gradually became part of the oral tradition and underwent the process of folklorization. It should be stressed, however, that the tale wasnot translated directly from Italian but from Polish, and that it was “Historia o kupcu” [“A tale of a merchant”] by Bieniasz Budny that played the role of the mediating text. The reception of the Old Russian translation of the tale was quite favourable, as evidenced by the existence of five versions and the fact that their authors did not limit themselves to passively reproducing the original. Analysis of episodes from the first part of the tales of the faithful wife shows that folk creators were mainly inspired by two Old Russian versions of “Tale of a merchant: A facetious tale” and “A strange tale”. In addition, traces of inspiration drawn from the byliny about Stavr Godinovich can be found there as well as from tales of other unfairly slandered beauties, for instance those about a merchant’s daughter.
