La Georgia e stata soggetta dalla Russia per quasi duecento anni: prima, quale vittima dell'annessione del Paese dagli Zar russi (1801-1917) e poi, sotto la forma dell'occupazione sovietica (1921-1991 ). Le autorità imperiali russe, sin dall'inizio, non poterono sopportare l'indipendenza della Chiesa ortodossa georgiana, governata del Cattolicos-Patriarca di tutta la Georgia, Antonio II. Nel 1811 deposero il patriarca e sottomisero la Chiesa all'autorità del Sacro Sinodo Russo. In questo modo si interruppe la continuità dell'autocefalia georgiana durata milletrecento anni. La programmata russificazione del Paese non risparmio quest'antica Chiesa. Il Cattolicos fu sostituito dagli esarchi russi, il numero delle eparchie fu ridotto a quattro, la lingua liturgica georgiana chuzuri fu soppressa e sostituita dallo sla-vo, si chiusero sistematicamente antichi monasteri e si face venire in massa il clero russo. Chiese e conventi subirono una serie di saccheggi e devastazioni. Le faccende della rivoluzione bolscevica procurarono un breve momento d'indipendenza: il 25 marzo 1917 la Chiesa riprese l'autocefalia e venne nominato il Cattolicos-Patriarca Kirion II. La rinascita religiosa fu presto impedita dal'occupatzione dell'Armata sovietica che cominciando dal febbraio 1921 segno un periodo di settant'anni esatti di regime antireligioso comunista. Il Patriarca e i Vescovi furono arrestati, quasi il 90% delle chiese furono chiuse e adibite ad edifici di utilità pubblica (musei, magazzini, cinema ecc.), i fedeli furono ostacolati nelle funzioni religiose e, se non obbedivano, venivano perseguitati. La propaganda atea non risparmio ne'bam-bini ne'giovani, ai quali fu assolutamente proibito di partecipare al culto e a qualsiasi istruzione cristiana fino all'età di 18 anni. Negli anni trenta la gerarchia ortodossa georgiana potè ricostituirsi, ma la sua esistenza dipendeva fortemente dalla collaborazione con il regime. La penetrazione di agenti del KGB nella gerarchia ecclesiastica e le divisioni tra il clero e il Cattolicato ridussero ulteriormente l'operatività della Chiesa nel suo insieme. Agli albori dell'indipendenza statale (1991), la società massimamente scristianizzata divenne una forte sfida per l'odierna gerarchia ortodossa, favorita dal Governo.

Opis:
In his article the author tries to show the essence, forms and areas of contemporary poverty and to diagnose the state of poverty in Poland. He also presents some psychosocial consequences of poverty and deprivation. Then he characterises the Catholic Church's attitude towards the problem of poverty and he attempts to point to some remedial measures that can be taken by local societies and parish communities. The author demonstrates that basically poverty is a structural problem. Generally people are poor not because they are losers, or because they are not clever enough, or they are unlucky. They are poor because the system, in which society is organised, including the economic system, is just as it is. Poverty has many causes and various consequences. The causes and the consequences are not only related to one another, but they reinforce one another. Struggle against poverty should comprise a possibly broadest range of causes. Social, political and economic changes are necessary, and so is making the policies in the domain of social services more dynamic as well as connecting them with charity work. The possibilities of the Church in the field of charity work are still significant. There is still a need for initiatives on the local scale, comprising a decanate or neighbouring parishes. According to the author, it is advisable that when fulfilling the various tasks or programmes connected with aid all available ways of co-operation with social and state institutions should be used. The experience of recent years shows that such co-operation is possible and often fruitful.

In the 18th century organs rapidly became popular in the Wiślica district. It has been found that most organs built then were small instruments in today's understanding. They consisted of positives without pedals. As far as the names are concerned it seems like the organs were a bigger instrument than the positive, especially with respect to the number of voices. Studies of the number of voices have shown that the number of instruments called `organs' and `positive' was equal, with the range of voices between six and nine. The most typical place where organs were put was the organ loft, which was at the back of the church, over the main door: 75.5% of the organs stood there. The inspections do not give much information about the construction details of the organs. With respect to the bellows most often their number was mentioned: it was 2, 4 or 6. Pedals were mentioned in two parishes but it may be assumed that there were more of them. It has been found that the percentage of portable instruments decreased – in the first half of the 18th century from 20 to 17.6%, and this process was especially rapid in the second half of the 18th century: from 17.6 to 7.7%. This proves a decrease in popularity of this kind of organs. During the 18th century the number of organists increased, which was probably related to the increase in the number of organs. If at the beginning of the 18th century the number of organists in relation to the number of inspected churches was a little above 60%, it increased to 90% in the middle of that century, and at the end of it it was probably 100%. The organists only had the names of Christian saints or ones that appeared in the Old Testament. They represented all age groups. Most often they were between 40 and 55 years old, and the average age was 42. The organist often had also the function of chanter, teacher, sacristan or bell-ringer. He was usually given a whole house, received payment in money, sometimes fairly big, and a strip of land or garden to maintain.

Opis:
The Chełm province, similar to the remaining Ruthenian territories that were part of the Polish Republic, was aland where two great Christian Churches coexisted: the Latin and the Orthodox ones. Polish settler expansion in the Chełm province was accompanied from the middle of the 14th century by afast development of territorial structures of the Latin Church. Formally the beginnings of the Chełm Bishopric go back to 1359 but one can speak about actual functioning of the diocese only from 1417 when it was taken over by Jan Biskupiec. At the first stage of development of the Church territorial organization the existing system of stronghold centers was used. All the parishes of the district type founded by the King were in towns (Chełm, Hrubieszów, Krasnystaw, Luboml, Ratno, Szczebrzeszyn), which stresses their relation to the town-foundation process. Besides the King's patronage, the Church's, or more precisely the Bishop's, property participated in development and consolidation of the parish network. The Church's fund activity was based on the Chełm Bishops' property. The pastoral institutions in Łyszcz, Skierbieszów, Kumów, Sawin and probably in Dobryniów were founded at the expense of the Diocese's Ordinaries – mainly Jan Biskupiec. The King's and the Bishops' fund movement (dying out as soon as the first half of the 14th century) was outdistanced by parish projects carried out owing to powers and means of the noblemen's property. The nobility did not fail to use the parish organization for economic stimulation of their neighborhood and for improving administration of their lands. This aim was the guiding principle of the 29 noblemen's funds set up until the middle of the thirties of the 17th century. Altogether 43 parish funds were established in the Chełm province up to 1635. Not all of them were permanent in their character: afew of them vanished completely (3), some churches were translated to new parishes (5), apart of them were reduced to the role of succursal chapels (2). The peak of the fund movement falls on the first half of the 15th century. 50% of all the founding projects were carried out then and all the categories of property participated in it. The proportions of particular types of patronage in the fund movement were not even: noblemen's funds comprised 67%, the King's – 21%, and the Church's – 12%, which probably corresponded to the ownership structure in the Chełm province. The erected parish churches show aclose correlation to the territories that had been settled for along time. The parish network was afunction and emanated from colonization. Most new churches were founded in the southwest and central parts of the province. The parishes of that region also took pride in being the oldest ones. On the other hand, there was aclear deficiency in development of Church institutions in Polesie Lubelskie and the north-east territories of the Chełm province situated on the right bank of the River Bug, that were backward as far as colonization is concerned. The average parish district comprised 244 km2, that is acircle whose radius was nearly 9 km. The mean area was very high due to the fact that there were only four functioning churches in the Luboml-Ratno region. In the Chełm region there was amodest average number of pastorate institutions, nevertheless in the thirties of the 17th century the parish network comprised the whole Chełm ecumene.

The present considerations are only concerned with the Church's social significance and position in the society and do not touch upon its theological nature. The problem of the Church from the sociological perspective is extremely important, since in Poland − as empirical analyses show − religious involvement is closely connected to one's personal attitude towards the Church as an institution. Also the debate about the role and place of religion in public life is obscured by one's attitude towards the Church as an institution. In the article the author presented selected results of public opinion polls conducted in the recent few years by the CBOS (Centre for Social Opinion Studies), OBOP (Centre for Public Opinion Studies), Instytut Sondaży Społecznych (Institute for Public Polls) “Opinia” and Polski Generalny Sondaż Społeczny (Polish General Social Poll). The declared trust in the Church has various levels depending on the institution that conducted the poll. The differences in the obtained results range from 10 to 20%, and sometimes even more. Taking into consideration the differences in the posed questions it can be said that between 55 and 75% of the studied Poles are willing to give positive opinions about the Church in general categories. However, it is a trust of a special kind, on the level of generally accepted values. If we refer to other indexes, like conviction about the Church's dominance in the society, satisfaction with the Church's pronouncements on various social issues, Poles opinions about the Concordat, applying the principles of the Catholic social teaching by the state authorities, the Church's influence on Polish legislature etc., this trust will appear in a little different light.

Other places mentioned there, both the ones that actually existed then (Tyre, Sidon, Jerusalem), and ones existing only in the imagination of people of those times who knew the Old Testament (Sodom, Nineveh) are mention from the perspective of one who is situated centrally with respect to them. The paper shows a theoretical reflection and empirical research of the value of work, as it is perceived in the teaching of the Church, but also shows the attitude adopted by the people who are unemployed. According to the basic assumptions of the doctrine of the Church, the subject-related character of work has been stressed here. It is man who is its creator and addressee, therefore its value is not merely limited to ensure living conditions. At the same time, the manner of „defining” the value of work is subjectively characterized, in respect of social circumstances and the personal situation of those who are to assess and approve of work. The paper describes the social circumstances of the unemployed, as well as the causes of this unemployment in the socio-political breakthrough in Poland. On the basis of trial research among the unemployed and homeless men from the Brother Albert Hospice for the Homeless in Lublin, the situation of those people has been analyzed. Among other things, not only the very manner of assessment of work has been analyzed, but also the circumstances under which the respondents lost it, the actual motives why they search for a job, and what obstacles they have in doing it. It follows from the research that the causes of the present situation of the people under study are not only the social conditions that are the reasons why they are unemployed. We have to take into consideration their personalities; they are often passive and adopt a pessimistic attitude towards reality and their own chances. The author draws pedagogic conclusions concerning the aid to the unemployed and homeless (for these two situations are most often consequently linked).
