Opis:
The submitted paper focuses on the issue of corporeality, strictly spoken on the conjunction of an individual’s physical body with its bearer’s personal identity – examined within the context of the affiliation to religious groups. The attempt to find an answer to the basic issue of „Who am I” is not restricted to the nontangible realm of the human psyche, but is conditioned by the materiality of the human body as well and therewith extends into the world of physical appearances. Man’s material body is the place where the biological processes of life manifest themselves, with our sensory organs we experience the world’s physical reality. The possession of a physical body allows for religious activity. The human body turns into an object of special care and attention. Medical conditions in particular emphasize the human corporeality, especially when associated with pain experience. Similarly the consumption of psychotropic substances which provoke changes of consciousness, causes an enhanced bodyawareness. The strong correlation between personal identity and the body finds its expression in the parameter of a deeply experienced cohesive identity.

Opis:
Methodius’ Discourse on the Resurrection (De resurrectione) is an extensive and profound presentation of the ecclesiastic understanding of this dogma in the context of the dissent towards certain opinions of Origen, and Platonic currents in Christianity. At the onset of the IV century, one of the central theological problems lay in demonstrating the rationality of the conceptualisation of “the resurrection of the flesh”, as well as a detailed explanation of its essence. The aim of this article is to indicate and describe those elements acknowledged by Methodius as necessary and constitutive for the orthodox understanding of the dogma. A further aim is an analysis of the application of his argumentations, focused on evidencing the identity of the resurrected body in respect of the earthly one, in both matter and form. The article also attempts to understand the essential motivations which induced the bishop of Olympus to address the very complex issue of resurrection during the Diocletianic persecutions. In light of earlier studies, an evaluation of the argumentations of the author of De resurrectione is proposed, in the context of the doctrinal debates of his times.

Opis:
Objective: The aim of the study was to verification the hypotheses about the relationship of trauma suffered in early childhood, alexithymia and dissociation with the power of the body self. Furthermore, it was examined whether regular physical activity as well as its type may affect the power of the body self. Material and method: The study involved 56 persons – 31 women (55.4%) (average age: M = 31.7) and 25 men (44.6%) (average age: M = 35.3). The subjects were divided into three groups: persons beginning yoga practice, persons starting exercises to improve their fitness (gym) and persons who were not taking any regular physical exercise. Self-description questionnaires were used to assess the intensity of: trauma – the Traumatic Experiences Checklist (TEC), alexithymia – the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), dissociation – the Curious Experiences Survey (CES) as well as a questionnaire for the body self. The assessment was conducted twice: after the recruitment of a given participant and after 3 months from the end of the first stage. Results: It was established that trauma, alexithymia and dissociation are significant predictors of the power of the body self in the study group. Emotional neglect and emotional abuse were demonstrated to have a particularly strong impact. In the case of alexithymia, the difficulty in identifying emotions and the difficulty in verbalising them were highly relevant with respect to the power of the body self. Dissociation had a significant impact on the power of the body self. As a result of physical activity, the power of the body self underwent statistically significant change as far as the interpretation of sensations in terms of emotions was concerned and the effect was greater in the group of persons practising yoga. Discussion: The results obtained not only shed new light on the pathogenic influence of trauma, alexithymia and dissociation on the power of the body self, but also demonstrated that a particular form of physical activity can, by increasing the level of interoception, change the power of the body self with respect to the ability to distinguish emotions from physical sensations. Conclusion: Traumatic experiences in early childhood become the basis for fostering permanent defence mechanisms: alexithymia and dissociation. It is these mechanisms, not the traumatic experience itself, which contribute to the development of the disorders of the body self. As it is clear from the analysis, the greatest role in this process is attributable to the difficulties in identifying emotions and depersonalisation.
Cel: Celem badania była weryfikacja hipotez dotyczących związku traumy doznanej we wczesnym dzieciństwie, aleksytymii i dysocjacji z siłą Ja cielesnego. Ponadto sprawdzono, czy regularna aktywność fizyczna i jej rodzaj mogą wpływać na siłę Ja cielesnego. Materiał i metoda: W badaniu wzięło udział 56 osób – 31 kobiet (55,4%) (średnia wieku: M = 31,7) i 25 mężczyzn (44,6%) (średnia wieku: M = 35,3). Badani zostali podzieleni na trzy grupy: rozpoczynających praktykę jogi, rozpoczynających ćwiczenia poprawiające kondycję fizyczną (siłownia) oraz niewykonujących regularnie żadnych ćwiczeń fizycznych. Wykorzystano kwestionariusze samoopisowe do badania natężenia traumy – Traumatic Experiences Checklist (TEC), aleksytymii – Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), dysocjacji – Curious Experiences Survey (CES), a także kwestionariusz Ja cielesnego. Wskutek aktywności fizycznej istotnej statystycznie zmianie ulegała siła Ja cielesnego w zakresie interpretacji doznań w kategorii emocji, a siła efektu okazała się większa w grupie osób praktykujących jogę.

This publication defines and characterizes the body language and tries to show its place and its role in the courtroom in the criminal proceedings. According to Albert Mehrabian - one of the first researchers of the body language - only 7% are affected by the words, 38% by the voice signals (the voice tone, the modulation) and 55% by the non-verbal signals. In view of the above fact it follows that the skills of the effective occurrence pay off so are the considerations in this context justified?

Opis:
The main aim of the paper is to present the results of research concerning psychological and socio-cultural risk factors for development of negative anti-health (that is too restrictive and compensatory) attitude toward one’s body in young Polish women. The study comprised 120 women, of 20 to 25 years of age, with similar socio-demographic status (marital status, living and having been brought up in multi-generation families) who so far in the course of their lives have not disclosed mental or somatic disturbances (having accompanying manifestations of body image distortion). The theoretical theses for the research model were the contemporary cognitive concepts (multifactor models of body image dissatisfaction), as well as socio-cultural concepts. The following have been used in the study: thematic drawings (body images), the Contour Drawing Rating Scale (CDRS) developed by - developed by Thompson & Gray, the Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI) created by D. Garner (Polish version developed by C. Żechowski), The Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire 3 (SATAQ 3), and questionnaire for behaviour towards the body (KZWC - Kwestionariusz Zachowań Wobec Ciała) (author’s own tool). The results confirmed the existence of negative attitude toward one’s own body, as well as development of inclinations for compensation-generating behaviour (application of various cleansing means and methods to change body weight and body image, which are disadvantageous for health). A group of risk factors has been identified, which may lead to the development of the above attitudes and behaviours toward one’s body in healthy women, who at the same time do not accept the image of their real bodies.

Opis:
Although the popularity of recreational pole dancing continues to gain momentum, its prevailing association with the erotic sphere and resulting stereotypes shape it as a borderline activity. Notably, the way pole dancing is approached and enacted elucidates how bodies, especially female embodiment, are socially constructed and controlled. Thus, to look at that issue from recreational female polers’ perspectives, this article sheds light on how their understandings of the body evolve with their engagement in the leisure activity at hand. That process is analyzed in the context of how women deal with tensions that arise while they navigate between the internalized societal expectations concerning desired femininity and personal agency. Drawing on ethnographic and interview data from pole dance studios in Poland, I discuss how polers’ perspectives on their bodies change from personal and interactional ‘limitations’ to embracing their bodies as interactional partners with whom to achieve their goals. In the process of learning by doing, women get to know their bodies and develop with them a relationship based on trust. Subsequently, growing to understand the bodies as their substantial selves that functionality allows them to achieve the ‘impossible’ as one empowers women. At the same time, I highlight how the process of espousing alternative perceptions of one’s body unfolds under the umbrella of an internalized frame of meanings concerning female embodiment that lures women to fit societal expectations. The interplay between the two sheds light on how female polers navigate toward reclaiming their self-confidence from the clutches of the critical social gaze while negotiating the notion of their bodies. Compelling in that regard is how relying on erotic associations with recreational pole dancing in terms of inciting empowerment through a sexual agency, as some studios do, plays out and factors into female pole dancers’ experiences concerning their leisure activity.

Opis:
Technological advances in medicine have given the sick and the disabled a chance of making a full recovery. However, contemporary trends show that medicine goes far beyond its restorative functions. The increasing popularity of plastic surgery raises many questions. Is medicine beginning a new era of its development as a response to the commercialisation of the human body? Does not correcting nature lead to people’s segregation into the better and the worse ones? The development of medical technologies has accelerated the commercialisation of the body by treating it as a package that one can “redecorate” to be more attractive in the market of social relations. Plastic surgery is trying to solve the identity crisis and psychological problems of people. New forms of medicalisation are emerging. A lack of success is seen as a symptom of a disease that can be cured with a scalpel. Plastic surgery can be a tool of reconstruction of one’s identity but only under strict circumstances (genetic defects, bodily injuries). By posturing as a solution to people’s psychological and sociological problems, medicine must reckon with a moral/ethical critique.

The article presents the results of our independent qualitative research conducted in Polish theater circles. In-depth interviews have been conducted with fourth-year female students of acting faculties from four state theater schools and with lecturers working at these faculties. The aim of the study was to answer the question whether the theater has currently become a place where bodily images are being standardized and beauty canons reproduced. The research material gathered allows for the formulation of the following conclusions: 1) studying at a theater school significantly impacts the perception of one’s own body, 2) there is a widespread belief among the students concerning the importance of the body (and the beauty thereof) in the profession of an actor, which results in subjecting the body to some regimes, often destructive ones, 3) the pressure to have a perfect body is so strongly internalized in the theater circles that it becomes imperceptible to those who yield under this pressure.

Opis:
The article presents such topics as: presence and absence of pupils body in Polish educational practice. Michel Foucault works and especially “biopower” and discipline concept is a theoretical background of the text. Michel Foucault didn’t analyze system of education in a wide sense; however a lot of his ideas were illustrated by educational examples (connected with mechanisms presented in military secondary schools or Jesuits’ boarding schools). This text presents different educational context. It is focused on young people (under the age of 35) memories connected with their own educational background in Poland, in non-religious public schools (3 of responders were pupils of sport-schools). The article presents results of the quantitative survey (in a group of 101 people). Survey contained open and closed questions focused on: presence of “body” as a topic of classes, attitude toward body of the pupil, mechanisms of shaping pupil’s body and connection between them and ideas of the “class order”. Article presents retrospective graduated pupils point of view on their school experiences connected with direct and indirect strategies of shaping pupils’ body in such context as space and time of education.
