    Opis:
    The article presents the possible input of musicologists in terms of popular music studies. It describes basic differences between rock and classical music, being still in the centre of attention of traditional musicology, and underlines the necessity of analysing musical recordings instead of relying on score music. New terminology is proposed – both original and based on Western scholars’ experiences – especially relating to formal structure. The author also analyses different approaches to rhythmics (advocating that scholar himself needs to divide a song into bars), harmonics and melodics (presenting popular models), and instrumentation (underlining the importance of sound processing methods).

    Twórcy Księgi dżungli (The Jungle Book, reż. Wolfgang Reitherman, 1967), kreując wizerunek filmowej małpy, wzorowali się na postaci Louisa Armstronga, któremu bohater ten zawdzięcza swe imię i przydomek króla swingu (myśl o zaangażowaniu jazzmana do roli króla Louie porzucono w obawie przed prawdopodobnymi protestami NAACP). Z kolei źródłem inspiracji dla filmowych sępów byli członkowie zespołu The Beatles. Wspomniane postacie utożsamiane są z trendami muzycznymi (jazz i rock) łączonymi z ruchami kontrkulturowymi (Beatnicy i hipisi). Biorąc pod uwagę inne zawarte w filmie odniesienia do amerykańskiej kultury oraz jego wyraźnie konserwatywny wydźwięk, rodzi się pytanie, czy inicjacyjna opowieść o Mowglim nie jest aby historią o ówczesnych dylematach młodych widzów? Autor przybliża obecne w Księdze dżungli aluzje do kultury tamtego okresu, omawia utwór na tle przemian społecznych w Ameryce lat 60., a także opisuje sposób ukazywania czarnoskórych osób w hollywoodzkim filmie animowanym, co stanowi uzupełnienie wywodu dotyczącego kontrowersji narosłych wokół postaci króla Louie.
    The creators of the film The Jungle Book (dir. Wolfgang Reitherman, 1967), creating the image of the film ape, modelled it on the character of Louis Armstrong, to whom the character owes his name and nick name of the King of Swing (the idea of engaging the jazzman for the role of King Louie was abandoned in fear of protests of the NAACP). In turn the film vultures were inspired by The Beatles. The mentioned characters are identified with musical trends (jazz and rock) that are associated with counterculture (beatniks and hippies). Given other references to the American culture present in the film and its clearly conservative character, one has to ask whether the story about Mowgli is not the story of the contemporary dilemmas of young viewers. The author discusses the allusions present in The Jungle Book to the culture of the period, analyses the work in the context of social changes of the 1960s in America, and describes the way black people were portrayed in American animation of the time, which adds to the argument dealing with the controversy surrounding the character of King Louie.

    Opis:
    This article discusses the cultural significance of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, a studio album released in 1967 by the English rock band the Beatles, and the final concert in the group’s career played from the rooftop of their Apple Corps headquarters in January 1969. It suggests that both experiments were a consequence of artistic decisions dictated by the band’s general reluctance to traditional music performances and their awareness of the reality of new media: recording studios and TV performances. According to the author, both the album and the concert can be viewed as a turning point from modernity to postmodernity, with a prefiguration of postmodern aesthetic and epistemic experience. This evolution from a concept album to a TV concert resulted in a synthesis materialised in the form of video clips and the birth of the MTV music station. The discovery of the Beatles’ entanglement in this process was possible with the hermeneutics proposed by the Italian philosopher Gianni Vattimo. Consequently, we are invited to take another look at the Sgt. Pepper’s album and the famous rooftop concert from the anthropological perspective.

    Głównym przedmiotem rozważań niniejszego artykułu jest wyjątkowe zjawisko kulturowego, które w ówczesnych realiach PRL teoretycznie nie powinno było zaistnieć. Celem badań jest przeprowadzenie analizy poszczególnych wydarzeń i opracowanie kalendarium, obrazującego całokształt działalności fanklubu. Przedstawione wydarzenia, informacje oraz etapy działań fanklubu są rozmieszczone chronologicznie.
    The following article shows the specific activity of the Beatles Fan Club in Lublin, in difficult realities of the 1980s, and its evolution from a neighbourhood circle of interest to the fan club of international activity. The article outlines not only a general description of the history of the fan club, but also recollections of its members and guests, who participated in meetings of the Beatles’ fans, among others journalists: Jerzy Janiszewski, Hirek Wrona and the author of Beatlemania. Obsession or madness? Marek Szpejankowski. There are also presented numerous fan-club’s members, for example editor Peter Metz, and events, together with a description of fan-club gadgets, all against the backdrop of the realities of the eighties. One of the purposes of the article is to contribute to our knowledge about the life in the Polish People’s Republic as well as open a discussion about the unique cultural phenomenon that under the circumstances of communist Poland should not have come into being. The Fan Club events, information and milestones are arranged in a chronological order.

    Opis:
    This article examines The Beatles’ classic animated film, Yellow Submarine (dir. George Dunning, 1968) in terms of its appeal to multi-demographic audiences. While it has become de rigueur to argue in favour of Yellow Submarine as an artefact of the late-1960s counter-culture, its status as a children’s film has largely been overlooked. This article will argue that Yellow Submarine invites, and is able to sustain, a range of interpretations, particularly regarding its dual status as a quintessential film for children and family audiences, and as a much more adult-oriented production that captures the revolutionary spirit of the period. While Yellow Submarine embodies aspects of late-1960s British and North American culture, the author argues that the narrative transcends national cultural specificities and attempts to appeal to universal human desires and emotional states through its balancing of utopian consensus and cultural diversity, and through the galvanizing presence of The Beatles.
    W artykule przeanalizowano film animowany Żółta łódź podwodna (reż. George Dunning, 1968) pod kątem atrakcyjności dla widowni międzypokoleniowej. Film ten jest zwykle pozycjonowany jako artefakt kontrkultury późnych lat 60., jego status filmu dla dzieci pozostaje w dużej mierze przeoczony. Autor dowodzi, że film ten zachęca i daje podstawy do wielu różnych interpretacji. Tyczy się to zwłaszcza jego podwójnego statusu jako zarazem filmu dla dzieci i widzów kina familijnego, jak i produkcji zorientowanej na dorosłych, oddającej rewolucyjnego ducha tego okresu. Autor wykazuje, że choć Żółta łódź podwodna ucieleśnia konkretne aspekty brytyjskiej i północnoamerykańskiej kultury późnych lat 60., to zawarta w tej animacji narracja wykracza poza narodową specyfikę kulturową i przemawia do uniwersalnych ludzkich pragnień oraz emocji, tak przez wizje utopijnego konsensusu i różnorodności kulturowej, jak i dzięki elektryzującej obecności The Beatles.     Transcendental meditation is a technique currently experiencing its renaissance, hitting the social need to obtain quickly inner peace without excessive devoting time and commitment. Being an attractive and fashionable method of relaxation in the media, it transfers hidden values of a significantly modified Vedic monistic philosophy and, compared to Christian prayers, repeated mantras are actually calls to Hindu deities. Aspiring to be scientific TM becomes a dangerous tool to distract modern man from deep Christian reflection towards shallow values built on the desire for profit and quick acquisition of the so-called initiation levels.
