This article outlines the two (only seemingly competing) theoretical approaches operative so far in translation theory to explain text comprehension processes. First, it gives a short description of the hermeneutic approach and the analytic approach. Then, it explains how both approaches can be linked together on the base of the translation-oriented text analysis scheme from Nord. The article ends with an overview of the benefits from this linkage for translation didactics and practice, including CAT-tools and MT.

Opis:
Due to social changes, but also as a result of human cognitive openness, when reconstructing the meanings of words, contemporary lexical semantics should depart from colloquiality as the only descriptive criterion. The present work proposes the formula of the open definition of meaning. Apart from the semantic-colloquial conceptual center it should also take into consideration simplified scientific knowledge about the world and human creative abilities to produce special semantic transformations of a word that are observable, for example, in artistic texts or language games. The meaning of a word, alike the structure of a concept, is relative and open.

This paper discusses how socio-communicative practices that originate in oral tradition, with a focus on Brazilian legends, manifest themselves in the digital environment. It foregrounds the production of discourse objects as a category of analysis and approaches the theoretical assumptions of linguistic and cultural studies through an interdisciplinary approach. It is a study of a theoretical-analytical nature that aims to answer the following research questions: How are Brazilian folk narratives constructed in multimodal texts-based interactions in digital environment? How are the objects of discourse constructed in the analyzed texts? The analyzed texts were collected through screenshots of interactions on public Facebook pages. It is hoped that the results will allow us to understand how digital texts are constructed and show how referential processes contribute to text construction and meaning production, deepening studies of language use in digital environments.

To translate means to understand and explore the unique and extraordinary world created by the author in order to be able to reproduce it in another language and to evoke similar reactions, emotions and reflections.

Opis:
The grammar of every language codes a body of meanings characteristic of that language. Expression of the grammaticalised meanings is obligatory and largely automatic. Individual languages contain grammatical categories specific to them and differ from one another not only with regard to the number of those categories but also their type, the internal structure of the categories they share (different numbers of subcategories) and the nature of their specific categories (which can be of the selecting or modelling type). These differences are exemplified in the study, the titular relationship being illustrated with the category of gender. The following problems are in the focus of attention:1. Is there any relationship between concepts and the grammatical gender of the words that express them?2. In what way does the grammatical gender of words influence our view of those aspects of reality that correspond to the words in question?3. How can one explain the similarities and differences with regard to gender between corresponding words in various languages?
W gramatyce każdego języka zakodowany jest specyficzny dla niego zespół znaczeń. Znaczenia zgramatykalizowane są wyrażane w sposób konieczny, w dużej mierze automatycznie. Poszczególne języki mają sobie właściwe zbiory kategorii gramatycznych. Różnią się nie tylko liczbą tych kategorii, lecz także ich rodzajem, strukturą wewnętrzną kategorii wspólnych (odmienną liczbą subkategorii w każdym z języków) i charakterem (kategoria selektywna bądź modulująca). Różnice te zyskały w artykule egzemplifikację, a tytułowa relacja została omówiona na przykładzie kategorii rodzaju. W centrum uwagi znalazły się następujące problemy:1. Czy jest związek między pojęciami a rodzajem gramatycznym wyrazów, które te pojęcia oznaczają?2. Jak rodzaj gramatyczny wyrazów wpływa na kształtowanie się naszych wyobrażeń o elementach świata owym wyrazom odpowiadających?3. Czym można wytłumaczyć rodzajowe podobieństwa i różnice między odpowiadającymi sobie wyrazami w różnych językach?

Abstract An article deals with the problematic of language and its main notions as meaning, discourse, text and translation. It is assumed as the recapitulation of these main notions and is directed to present these terms as necessary for the understanding of modern branches of linguistics and philosophy, such as f.ex. transhumanism. The problem of language is here treated as an integral part of the discussion on conscious being and as precondition of an understanding of its character. The author finds, in contrast to some modern currents in linguistics, that the problematic of language still constitutes the irreplaceable element of the consideration on the character of the subject and its relation with the outside world. Keywords: language, meaning, discourse, text, translation. Streszczenie Artykuł dotyczy problematyki języka i jego głównych pojęć, takich jak: znaczenie, dyskurs, tekst i tłumaczenie. Jest on pomyślany jako rekapitulacja tych pojęć i jest nakierowany na przedstawienie ich jako koniecznych dla zrozumienia współczesnych dziedzin językoznawstwa i filozofii, takich jak np. transhumanizm. Problem języka jest tu potraktowany jako integralna część dyskusji na temat świadomego podmiotu i jako warunek wstępny zrozumienia jego charakteru. Autor uważa, że problematyka języka stanowi niezastąpiony element namysłu nad charakterem podmiotu i jego relacji do zewnętrznego świata.

The article is a critical discussion of a book by Piotr Śniedziewski, who made the subject of his research a comparative analysis of the work and thought of two poets of the second half of the 19th century: Mallarmé and Norwid, treating them both as precursors of the esthetics of modernism. The author of the review remarks that the analytical arguments of the book are subjected to its real and main aim, that is practical verification of the theoretical construct projected by the Poznań researcher. The construct is the “rhetoric of silence” that could replace the traditional category of rhetoric based on classical models. After a synthesizing characteristic of the whole that is competently and clearly built by the author very well read in the poetry of the researched epoch and in the literature of the subject, the reviewer reminds shortly the achievements to date of comparative Norwidology, with the publications by Maciej Żurowski leading the way. Next she presents six chapters as subsequent stages of Piotr Śniedziewski's argument, commenting them economically, in a way that does not disturb objectivity of the presentation. The predominant feature of the commentaries is the reviewer's conviction that although the author emphasizes the connections between Norwid and Romantic poetry as well as his philosophy that is distant from modernism, the thesis about a common basis of both the poets' work is a peculiar attempt at imposing a straightjacket of an a priori constructed theory on the subject he studies. However, the work of both the poets (both their poetry and thought) emerges victorious from this ordeal. It is so both because of the resistance of art as a domain of independent mastery, and of the fact that Śniedziewski, a follower of the “new comparative study”, comparing rather differences than similarities, consciously dissociated himself from extreme deconstruction that is in fashion. Hence ultimately there are no losers in the book: the rhetoric of silence does work in the workshop practice, and works by the two outstanding poets are not overshadowed by a risky interpretation. From the point of view of Norwidology let us just add that we still have to wait for broadening the comparative background of his work.

Artykuł jest głosem polemicznym wobec tekstu Patryka Szaja zatytułowanego Śledzenie (śladów) sensu. Tekst i lektura w hermeneutyce ponowoczesnej, w którym autor pokazuje, że zaproponowana przez Szaja kategoria „bliskości”, określająca ontologię lektury uprawianej przez hermeneutykę ponowoczesną, jest metafizycznie obciążona. Obecne w interpretacji Szaja specyficzne rozumienie dekonstrukcji jako odwrotności hermeneutyki nowoczesnej powoduje, że „bliskość” nie tylko uprzywilejowuje wnętrze (kosztem zewnętrza), signifiant (kosztem signifié), ale też ze „śladu” czyni odwrotność „sensu”. Ich wypadkową, można rzec, jest dopiero tekst.
This article offers a polemical response to Patryk Szaj’s text, titled Tracking the (Traces of) Sense: Text and Reading in Modern Hermeneutics. In his article, Szaj demonstrates how the category of “closeness” he uses to define the ontology of reading practiced in modern hermeneutics is metaphysically charged. The specific conception of deconstruction we encounter in Szaj’s analysis frames it as an inversion of modern hermeneutics, which not only implies that “closeness” privileges the interior (at the expense of the exterior) and the signifiant (at the expense of the signifié). It also implies that the “trace” is an inversion of “meaning.” We might say that their result is merely the text.

Translation can be said to be an exercise based on a tripartite comprehension: that of the text, the original author and the reader of the translated text. In translating therefore, an attempt is often made to create a text that would be comprehensible to the target reader. To effectively do this, several factors are considered, one of which is culture, especially in literary texts where culture is richly presented. A literary translator must therefore reproduce not just language but also culture. An illustration of this can be found in the translation of Hector Malot’s Sans Famille, from French to English, Kalabari and Igbo. To adapt the translated version to the various target audiences, the cultural elements of the original French text have been replaced with those of the target languages but with the semantic content intact. This is known as cultural appropriation, an application of the semio-pragmatic theory. This theory affirms Saussure’s structural linguistics thereby applying structuralism to translation.

The subject of the paper is the notion of redundancy, which in the text of law may be perceived both from systemic point of view and linguistic perspective. Within systemic standpoint, the paper focuses on superfluum issue, which occurs when one provision is repeated by another legal provision (full superfluum) and when part of one provision becomes „new” provision (or its part) in the same or another legal text (partial superfluum). These manifestations of systemic redundancy are not always results of legislative mistakes (as might be noticed during analysis of selected examples of superfluum derived from Polish legal texts), but the evaluation of each case of superfluum depends on criterions, which in Polish legal system are incomplete and imprecise. In the second part, the paper discusses one kind of linguistic redundancy – semantic redundancy, which appears in pleonasms, tautologies and pleonastic analytisms. It is argued here, in contrary to majority of previous descriptions of semantic redundancy phenomenon presented in linguistics and legal theory, that some redundant expressions may be useful during interpretation of legal provisions, because in certain circumstances they may have pragmatic values. These values are: enhancing meaning, specifying meaning and explicating meaning. Furthermore, in some cases aforementioned pragmatic values may be reached by context-independent redundant expressions, what has been shown basing on examples from Polish legal texts.

The method of two-level text-meaning similarity approximation, consisting in the implementation of the classification of the stages of text opinions of customers and identifying their rank quality level was developed. Proposed and proved the significance of major hypotheses, put as the basis of the developed methodology, notably about the significance of suggestions about the existence of analogies between mathematical bases of the theory of Latent Semantic Analysis, based on the analysis of semantic relationship between the variables and degree of participation of the document or term in the corresponding concept of the document data, and instruments of the theory of Social Network Analysis, directed at revealing the features of objects on the basis of information about structure and strength of their interaction. The Contextual Cluster Structure, as well as Quantitative Ranking evaluation for interpreting the quality level of estimated customers’ opinion has formed.
Opracowano metodę dwupoziomowej aproksymacji podobieństwa – metodę przetwarzania tekstu, którą zastosowano w problemie klasyfikacji oraz do określania poziomu jakości klientów. Posługując się zaproponowaną w artykule metodyką, udowodniono istotność głównych hipotez, w szczególności hipotezy o istnieniu analogii pomiędzy podstawami matematycznymi LSA (ang. Latent Semantic Analysis), bazującej na analizie relacji semantycznej związku między stopniem udziału analogicznych pojęć w zbiorze dokumentów a narzędziami teorii analizy sieci społecznych (ang. Social Network Analysis), która z kolei odsłaniania cechy obiektów na podstawie informacji na temat struktury ich wzajemnych powiązań. Z połączenia powyższych metod wyłoniła się struktura klastra kontekstu, dająca ocenę ilościową na potrzeby ranking poziomu jakości opinii szacowanych klientów.

Letters as well as wedding and funeral speeches that are analysed in the article show certain features, called distinctive ones by the author, that point to Evangelical origin of the texts. The author proposes the thesis that confession significantly influences the composition of a speech or a letter. This is connected with a careful selection of part of the rhetoric scheme that was obligatory at that time, as well as with a possibility of understanding additional meanings from the elements defined by the usage and corresponding to the Calvinist doctrine. In the described texts, among others, discussions of genealogy (well developed in Catholic noblemen's speeches), lack of heraldic metaphors, limiting the enkomion significantly, as well as the choice of quotations and paragraphs adequate to the contents of the Evangelical-Reformed Church's teaching are considered to be distinctive features.
