A textile material’s ability to pass water vapour greatly affects the comfort of the wearer. Terry fabrics are characterised by their high absorption ability acquired by an increased absorbing surface of the pile structure. In this study we set out to elucidate the effects of textile structure and finishing technology on the vapour absorption of material. This paper presents an experimental investigation of the water vapour absorption of linen/cotton and hemp/cotton terry woven fabrics with respect to pile height and finishing procedures. The terry textiles used in the experimental work were made with a pile height of 6, 9, and 12 mm. The research demonstrated that the character of the water vapour absorption of terry woven fabrics depends on the fabric structure and finishing applied. It was found that various finishing operations such as washing in water, washing with detergent and softening as well as washing with detergent, softening, and tumbling processes had an influence on the water vapour absorption of terry fabrics. The uniformity of dispersions was proved for the variants investigated. High informativity of the experiment was found by analysing the data of water vapour absorption of tumbled linen/cotton terry fabric with a 12 mm pile height. The polynomial regression showed a match with experimental data with a regression of R2 = 0.7687. From this empiric model, the effect of the tumbling period can be understood.
Zdolność materiałów włókienniczych do przepuszczania pary wodnej w znacznym stopniu wpływa na komfort noszenia. Tkaniny frotowe charakteryzują się wysoką zdolnością pochłaniania dzięki zwiększonej powierzchni absorbującej. W pracy przedstawiono wpływ struktury tkanin i obróbki wykańczającej na wchłanianie pary wodnej przez materiał tkaniny. Badania absorpcji pary wodnej przeprowadzono na tkaninach frotowych lnianobawełnianych i konopno-bawełnianych uwzględniając wysokość pętelki okrywy (6, 9 i 12 mm) i procedury wykańczania. Badania wykazały, że na absorpcję pary wodnej tkanin frotowych miały wpływ różne procesy wykańczania, takie jak: kąpiel w wodzie, kąpiel z detergentem i zmiękczaczem oraz kąpiel z detergentem i zmiękczaczem z zastosowaniem procesu bębnowania. Wykazano jednorodność dyspersji dla badanych wariantów. Regresja wielomianowa wykazała zgodność wyników eksperymentalnych ze współczynnikiem regresji R2 = 0,7687.

The online community of science fiction and fantasy fans constitutes a rich source of material for analysing reader response to translations as its members often reflect not only on the books they read but also on the quality of their translations. The Polish translations of Terry Pratchett’s The Wee Free Men are a good example of translations which evoked ample response online, with criticism focusing on the reasons for initially not employing the usual translator of the Discworld series, the treatment of names and dialect in the translation, and the issues connected with defining the target reader of the text and adjusting the text to their needs. The analysis of online reactions shows that translation solutions are considered problematic by readers especially when the reasons behind them are not clear.
Internetowa społeczność fanów fantastyki stanowi bogate źródło materiału do badań nad reakcjami czytelników na tłumaczenia, gdyż jej członkowie często wyrażają opinie nie tylko o książkach, które czytają, ale też o jakości ich tłumaczeń. Polskie przekłady The Wee Free Men Terry’ego Pratchetta są dobrym przykładem tłumaczeń, które zainspirowały wiele komentarzy. Krytyka w nich zawarta skupia się na powodach, dla których tłumaczenia nie powierzono od razu tłumaczowi pozostałych książek w serii Świat Dysku, sposobie tłumaczenia imion i dialektu, oraz zagadnieniach związanych z określeniem docelowego czytelnika i dopasowaniem tekstu do jego potrzeb. Na podstawie analizy można wnioskować, że poszczególne wybory tłumacza są uważane przez czytelników za problematyczne zwłaszcza tam, gdzie nie dostrzegają oni ich uzasadnienia.

This research studied the influence of thermo-fixing temperature and binder concentration on the fixation of microcapsules with Eucalyptus essential oil to yarns and terry fabrics as well as physical properties of textiles with microcapsules. SEM micrographs confirmed that the grafting of microcapsules onto yarns spun from cotton, grey linen, bleached linen, ramie and bamboo fibres as well as onto ramie-cotton terry fabrics was effective. We conclude that a thermo-fixing temperature of 160 °C and higher caused the deformation of microcapsules or the partial or entire loss of an active product of the majority of microcapsules. Larger microcapsules were commonly damaged faster and were worse than smaller ones. It was determined that variation of the binder concentration from 20 to 95 g/l increased the area density of ramie/cotton terry fabric 1.7 times. The area density of terry fabric grafted with microcapsules in relation to the weft density could be described by linear equations.
W pracy badano wpływ temperatury stabilizacji termicznej i stężenie materiału wiążącego na naniesienie mikrokapsuł wypełnionych olejkiem eukaliptusowym do włókien i materiałów frotowych. Badano również właściwości fizyczne materiałów włókienniczych z mikrokapsułami. Zdjęcia SEM potwierdziły, że naniesienie mikrokapsuł na przędze przędzione z bawełny, surowego lnu, bielonego lnu, ramii i włókien bambusowych, jak również na materiały frotowe wykonane z mieszanek ramia/bawełna było efektywne. Mogliśmy wywnioskować, że temperatura stabilizacji 160 °C i wyższa powoduje deformację większości mikrokapsułek i w efekcie częściowy lub całkowity ubytek substancji aktywnej. Większe mikrokapsułki były zazwyczaj niszczone szybciej i w efekcie były gorsze niż kapsułki mniejsze. Stwierdzono również, że zmiana w stężeniach czynnika wiążącego pomiędzy 20 - 95 g/l zwiększa masę powierzchniową materiałów frotowych ramia/bawełna 1,7 razy.

Poprzez odrzucenie zasady czystości formy, postmodernizm umożliwił dogłębną analizę, rewaluację oraz ponowne zdefi niowanie cech charakterystycznych poszczególnych gatunków literackich. Dało to twórcom możliwość zabawy formą oraz tworzenia często nieoczywistychhybryd gatunkowych. Jednym z mistrzów owych międzygatunkowych chimer jest współczesny brytyjski pisarz, sir Terry Pratchett . Twórca z wszech miar przekorny i nie stroniący od eksperymentów literackich, w pełni wykorzystuje wolność gatunkową oferowaną przez tezy postmodernizmu. Efekty owej fascynacji postmodernizmem są dostrzegalne m.in. w serii jego powieści kryminalnych, które po zanalizowaniu okazują się być mieszaniną fantasy, powieści detektywistycznej, powieści policyjnej, kryminału noir, kryminału typu hard-boiled, ballady heroicznej, powieści łotrzykowskiej oraz satyry polityczno-społecznej. Ta wieloskładnikowa mikstura jest, pomimo pozornie chaotycznego doboru składników, tworzona wg starannie opracowanego klucza i zorganizowana wokół jednego głównego gatunku, którym na pierwszy rzut oka wydaje się być kryminał noir. Jednakże, oglądane z bliska, kryminały Pratchett a okazują się być, pomimo licznych współczesnych elementów, przedstawicielami klasycznej powieści detektywistycznej sięgającej tradycjami do epoki królowej Wiktorii i wywodzącej się od pewnego dżentelmena z fajką i szkłem powiększającym.
The rejection of strict norms governing genre, initiated by modernism and furthered by (post)modernism, allowed for a dissection, re-evaluation, and eventual re-defi nition o characteristics and roles associated with particular literary genres. The freedom of form stemming from this departure from structurally and conceptually binding frameworks gave authors license to propose mixtures of genres previously unthought of. Such intermingling of literary forms can be observed in Terry Pratchett ’s body of work. It is diffi cult to perceive his novels as drawing from anything other than the ideas of (post)modernist eclecticism. A collage of genres and styles, Pratchett ’s works are the embodiment of the notions of freedom of form and from form, a characteristic visible, inter alia, in his crime fi ction series. In his writing Pratchett pursues diff erent paths of (post)modern analysis, fi rst de-constructing a genre, dissecting it to a point in which he has all the elements comprising it distilled and then moving on to rearranging them according to his own scheme, incorporating elements of diff erent kinds of fi ction. Pratchett ’s crime fi ction is an amalgam of 18th century novel, 19th century detective fi ction, and hard-boiled fi ction, as well as, heroic ballad, the picaresque novel, and socio-political satire. However, despite bearing certain (post)modern characteristics, Pratchett ’s crime novels cannot be classifi ed as (post)modernist or even modernist. Pratchett arranges his rather poignant mixture of diff erent elements around a not-so-obvious core, which, upon closer inspection, and despite its (post)modern accretions, proves to be an example of essentialist detective fi ction in which the detective is the society’s guardian, preserving and re-instating the established world order.

Close-reading selected poems and essays by Gary Snyder, the article examines an apparent epistemological contradiction in Snyder’s environmentalist message. As a rule Snyder consistently relies on essentialist discourse, with his frequent references to human nature, the collective unconscious, mankind’s generic identity and man’s inner voice. In the poem The Call of the Wild, however, he questions man’s ability to retrieve a “natural” generic core through, say, meditation or vision quests. This apparent contradiction is resolved when one views Snyder’s work through the lens of Neo-Aristotelian thought as exemplified by Terry Eagleton’s concept of human nature. To Eagleton, like to Aristotle, human nature is not a static biological given, but rather a mental predisposition. Thus it is more of a task, or challenge, than a set of characteristics. Such ideas resonate with Snyder’s concept of the ever-changing human nature. However, Eagleton and Snyder pass company as fellow Neo-Aristotelians when it comes to the socio-political applications of their ideas. To the British critic, socialism is the answer, allegedly providing the optimal conditions for a harmonious blend of one’s private and public self. To Snyder, state-supported socialism is but another oppressive political system, very much in the mentally-restrictive tradition of what he calls “the Judaeo-Capitalist-Christian-Marxist West.”

Anna Szóstak’s book is a special work, an advanced and complete study in sociology, psychology, and philosophy of religion, using as its source material the virtual world of Terry Pratchett, the recently deceased famous fantasy writer. Pratchett’s world, considered by the Author from various perspectives (“Seven Looks”), is to a significant degree a figure of extraliterary reality and phenomena taking place in it, which are considered together with their broad cultural background and referred to the historical inheritance of societies of our cultural circle. Szóstak’s book employs interdisciplinary methodology, present also in her other publications, which allows her to step outside a traditional analysis and interpretation of the work: an interpenetration of literary studies, anthropology, religion, philosophy, psychology, and sociology of religious beliefs – all of these are referred to Pratchett’s 522 | Barbara Tomalak virtual world. This is significant, since the methodology proposed by the author is without doubt the future of literary studies.

The paper presents an investigation of the resistance to pile loop extraction of terry fabrics in relation to the pile height, impacts/finishing, and weft density. Terry fabrics analysed in the experimental work were made from linen/cotton or ramie/cotton yarns. The pile height of the fabrics was 6 and 12 mm, and the weft density varied from 80 to 200 dm-1. The samples were affected by impacts or finishing operations. Grey fabrics were also investigated. Analysing a 10 mm pulling distance, the highest resistance to pile loop extraction of grey terry fabrics (1064.2 mN) was determined for linen/cotton fabric with a 6 mm loop pile. It was found that an increase in the weft density of ramie/cotton terry fabrics from 80 to 160 dm-1 led to an increase in the resistance to pile loop extraction for all pulling distances investigated but with a different intensity: for a 5 mm pulling distance the difference was 3.2 times, and for a 25 mm pulling distance it was in 2.1 times. The decrease in the resistance to pile loop extraction of 18.6 - 38.0% of industrially finished and tumbled linen/cotton fabrics compared with grey ones was determined at a 10 mm pulling distance. The changes in the resistance to pile loop extraction in relation to the tumbling period were not statistically significant.
Badano odporność na wyciąganie pętli okrywy tkanin frotowych w zależności od długości okrywy, sposobu wykańczania i gęstości wątku. Tkaniny frotowe zastosowane w eksperymencie wykonano z mieszanek len/bawełna oraz ramia/bawełna. Badano tkaniny o wysokości okrywy 6 i 12 mm oraz gęstości wątku od 80 - 200 dm-1. Próbki badano surowe oraz poddano działaniu rożnych procesów wykańczających.

An aroma agent containing eucalyptus essential oil was used for the development of a smart terry textile. The performance of terry woven fabric with microcapsules in relation to varied amounts of binder as well as the weft density of the fabric was evaluated. By SEM analysis it was confirmed that microcapsules really covered the terry textile. The bending rigidity and coefficient of anisotropy of samples modified with microcapsules and untreated ones were assessed. Due to additive components such as microcapsules and binder, the bending rigidity of terry fabric increased by even 5.1-12.8 times in the weft direction and by 5.3-14.0 times in the warp direction compared with grey ones. The research developed an analysis and empiric mathematical model suitable for predicting of binding rigidity as well as designing new terry fabrics with required binding properties.
W pracy poddano ocenie wyroby frotowe impregnowane mikrokapsułkami zawierającymi oleje aromatyczne w odniesieniu do różnych stężeń lepiszcza (20, 35, 50, 65, 80, and 95 g/dm3) oraz gęstości wątku. Za pomocą analizy SEM potwierdzono pokrycie wyrobu mikrokapsułkami. Porównano sztywność zginania i współczynnik anizotropii próbek niemodyfikowanych i impregnowanych mikrokapsułkami. Dzięki dodatkowym składnikom, takim jak mikrokapsułki i lepiszcze, sztywność zginania wyrobów frotowych wzrosła nawet 5,1-12,8 krotnie w kierunku wątku i 5,3-14,0 krotnie w kierunku osnowy w porównaniu z wyrobami niemodyfikowanymi.

The aim of the article is to perform a comparative analysis of functions served by characters’ proper names in Jingo by Terry Pratchett and in the Polish translation of the book. The study was based on the theory of two acts; it showed which functions were served by the examined proper names, how many names served individual functions and which functions were preserved, which were changed, and which were lost. The data gained from the study will be further used to advance the research on means of translating onyms in novels so as to preserve the functions served by them in the original.
Celem artykułu była analiza porównawcza funkcji nazw własnych postaci w powieści Terry’ego Pratchetta zatytułowanej Jingo oraz w jej polskim przekładzie. Badanie przeprowadzono w oparciu o teorię dwóch aktów. Studium pokazało, jakie funkcje pełnią analizowane onimy, jaka jest ich częstotliwość oraz które z nich zostały zachowane w tłumaczeniu, które zostały zmienione, a które utracone. Opis:
The article reflects on how characters with the features of the mythological Cassandra function in science fiction films. Such references are part of the rich tradition of building fictional depictions of the near or distant future on the foundation of mythical stories. The study aimed to examine the considerable and complex meaning which Cassandra conveys through the ages and to determine its usefulness in constructing pop culture ideas about the current condition of humanity. In contemporary fiction, Cassandra is brought to the fore more often than in ancient sources, and her fullest portrait is drawn in those films that both consider her a figure of the powerlessness of the prophets and take into account her personal drama. In Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) by James Cameron, 12 Monkeys (1995) by Terry Gilliam, Minority Report (2002) by Steven Spielberg, and Arrival (2016) by Denis Villeneuve, the figure of Cassandra is examined through her prophetic gift, the alleged madness of the seer and the fearfulness of the prophetism itself.

Literatura fantastyczna, choć z zasady egzomimetyczna, wielokrotnie sięga po elementy pochodzące z realnego świata i różnych kultur, a w tekstach znanych autorów daje zauważyć się wykorzystywanie kodu kulturowego do uprawdopodobnienia opisywanych historii, bohaterów oraz świata przedstawionego. Jednym z chętnie wykorzystywanych aspektów kodu kulturowego w fantastyce są elementy folkloru oraz wierzeń obecnych w danej kulturze i utrwalonych w używanym przez wspólnotę języku. Chociaż czynią one tekst bardziej interesujący, referencje do baśniowych postaci czy ludowych czarów mogą stanowić istotną przeszkodę tłumaczeniową, a rozwiązanie takiego problemu będzie wymagało szczególnych strategii translatorskich. Jednym z autorów sprawnie operujących kodem kulturowym w swoich dziełach był Terry Pratchett, co jest szczególnie widoczne w jego cyklu książkowym „Świat Dysku”. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest pokazanie, jak w wybranych pozycjach z serii „Świat Dysku” funkcjonują referencje do folkloru, jaką rolę pełnią oraz prezentacja problemów i strategii obecnych w polskim przekładzie powieści wchodzących w skład cyklu.
Fantasy though being a fictional literary genre often contains elements from the real world and different cultures. In texts written by popular authors we can notice usage of the cultural codes  in order to make characters, plot or fictional world more probable. One of the elements of the code which is commonly used in fantasy novels are elements of folklore or folk beliefs present in a particular region. On the one hand, they make a text more interesting for the reader, and on the other, names of legendary characters or local superstitions can create a significant obstacle for a translator, who will look for specific translational strategies. One of authors using elements of the cultural code in his books was Terry Pratchett. This can be observed especially in his series “The Discworld”. In this article some problems connected with elements of folklore and translational strategies will be presented on the example of extracts of the “Discworld” novels.
