Opis:
The project “Mammals in the iconography of the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut”, initiated by the author in the 2011/2012 season, encompasses a detailed documentation of the animals depicted in various parts of Hatshepsut’s temple in Deir el-Bahari as a prerequisite for in-depth research. The study follows a multi-disciplinary approach within faunal analysis, and is complemented with technological observations on the execution of relief representations from the temple. At this stage of the project, a general taxonomic identification of the animal representations is nearly complete and a further detailed study of each taxon has been undertaken. Both complete animals (mainly mammals for now) and animal raw materials were studied in addition to the contexts and scenes in which they appear.

This article is devoted to the description and analysis of the limestone stela of Haremwia from Abydos. It was on display in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo (CG 34079 / JE 22011) and is currently in the storerooms of the Grand Egyptian Museum, Giza. It dates to the period from the mid to the late Eighteenth Dynasty, New Kingdom, and probably from the reign of Amenhotep III, on the basis of its stylistic, iconographic, and epigraphic details. It is extremely well preserved and most of the colours are intact, apart from some damage to the bottom. The stela records a significant title of Haremwia, namely hry šnʿ n tȝ wʿbt, ‘chief of the provisioning sector of the temple workshop’. The importance of this stela, above all, is that it records the first attestation of this title on Egyptian monuments. Furthermore, it records Asiatic names of foreign origin for family members. The offering formula in the first register is very interesting due to the retrograde orientation of its hieroglyphic inscription. The author describes the stela, deals with its individual idiosyncrasies, inscriptions, iconographic and phraseological traits, and focuses on the titles and professions of its individuals.

Opis:
Building a temple in Ancient Egypt began with the Foundation Ritual and ended with the consecration of the completed monument to its gods. The moment when the temple was ready for its cultic functions is by a majority of authors placed at the end of the process. The importance and complexity of the Foundation Ritual shows that directly after its completing the Egyptians might have treated extent of the future temple as a sacred space which already during the construction of the temple required some sort of cult. There seems to be no royal document referring to the official worship, but a number of ostraca from Deir el-Bahari and another longer document may be linked to this early stage unmaterialized existence of the temple. All these documents record the offerings presented in the temple by different officials of the time of Hatshepsut. At least some of them predate the completion of building operation.

Opis:
For most religions, the sign of the divine presence, the sacred, is the temple. Temple buildings, through their form, functional and spatial arrangement, location or design, from the very beginning carried many symbolic meanings and communicated transcendental associations. The temple is also the basic manifestation of sacred architecture, the development of which was associated with complex transformations on many levels. Christian sacred architecture has two archetypes, whose common features combined with theological thought contained in biblical and patristic texts and historical factors have led to the evolution of subsequent forms of temple buildings. The first is a residential house and the second is the Jerusalem Temple. They are at the root of the development of Christian religious architecture. The text of the article, referring to both archetypes, presents the genesis of the Christian temple and indicates its first forms, which were domus ecclesiae, as well as houses of prayer - the first free-standing, autonomous church buildings. The text is also a contribution to further, in-depth research on this subject.
To właśnie one leżą u źródeł rozwoju chrześcijańskiej architektury sakralnej. Tekst artykułu, odnosząc się do obydwu archetypów, przedstawia genezę świątyni chrześcijańskiej oraz sygnalizuje jej pierwsze formy, którymi były domus ecclesiae, a także domy modlitwy – pierwsze wolno stojące, autonomiczne budynki kościelne. Tekst stanowi jednocześnie przyczynek do dalszych, pogłębionych badań w tej tematyce.

Opis:
The Temple of Hatshepsut was in use, and frequently modified, between the 16th century BC and the 12th century AD. From the beginning of the archaeological work at the site in the 19th century, one of the primary research goals has been to understand the modifications made to the building since its initial construction. The present paper provides an overview of the different arguments and ideas proposed for the original configuration of the Upper Courtyard, confronted with evidence from recent excavations between 2014 and 2016 in different parts of the court. In 2000, architect Andrzej Kwaśnica argued for an unprecedented arrangement of the architectural elements of the Upper Courtyard. However, recent archaeological discoveries suggest that the issue should be revisited. The examination of the foundations of the Ptolemaic Portico columns has shown that the six bases may have been in situ since the reign of Hatshepsut.

Opis:
The Ammonites, a people living east of the Jordan River, were neighbors of the ancient Israelites. The Old Testament (1 Kings, 11,5; 2 Kings, 23,13) and probably an inscription from the citadel of Amman mention Milkom as the supreme God of the Ammonites. Most Ammonite names did not contain the name of their national god, but used a more generic divine name, ’El. We don’t know if the name: ’El refers to the Canaanite god or to a local manifestation of this deity. Ammonites also worshiped other deities (i.e. ‘Astarte, ‘Anat, Ba‘al, Hadad/’Adad, Qos, Šamas, YHWH and Yerah). A number of limestone statues and clay figurines of bearded individuals wearing an atef-crown could be Ammonite monarchs or deity (Milkom or ’El). An Ammonite sanctuary has been excavated in Ruğm el-Kursi, situated north-west of Amman. Excavations at this site unearthed a rectangular building measuring 18,70 x 12,60 m. The orientation of the temple is east-west, with the entrance facing east. The Temple of Ruğm el-Kursi is an important example of religious architecture in the Levant. It’s not just about the first Iron Age monumental temple in Ammon and in Jordan, but it is also the first excavated monumental sanctuary of the moon god in the Levant. The two reliefs on the door jambs depicted the full moon within the crescent and confirm that the moon god was worshiped there. Because of the reliefs the sanctuary has been dated to Iron Age II. The temple of Ruğm el-Kursi was divided into two or in three rooms and belongs to the „Langraum” temple type, which is known in the region since the middle of the 3rd mill. BC.

Among the old temples which are under the Kashijora Pargana, Raghunath Jew temple (also known as Thakurbari) is very remarkable for its sculpture and culture of seventeenth century. This is a very old temple in the worship of Goddess Rama-Sita. The temple is a unique with its ancient constructions, and sculpture in its walls, and columns. A festival in the worship of lord Rama is held every year on Dashera and runs over a month. People of all community, caste and culture assemble in this festival. This festival also helps to develop the economy of not only the temple authority but also the people of the surrounding villages. The Ratha (Chariot), which runs in the day of Dashera, is very unique in the entire Midnapore district. It is made up of wood and contains several sculptural designs. Although there is as such no detailed historical record of this temple but still it is silently preserving the culture of the ancient Bengal over last three centuries.
