    This article reviews the most import ant topics in the encyclical of Pius Xi titled Dilectissima nobis in which the Pope expresses his opposition to the persecution of the Catholic Church and to attempts to restrict religious freedom in Spain during the 1930s. The Church was regarded as an enemy of the state and of social progress. The first two sections of the article provide the historical background of Spanish anti-clericalism and its increasing hostility to the Church. The third section shows how legislators successfully took away the Church’s ability to function in society. The fourth section discusses the most important topics in the encyclical Dilectissima nobis. In the last section, the author presents the person of Pope Pius XI in the context of his time. He was an enemy of communist ideology, which enslaved man, and a great defender of human dignity.

    When power is exercised in the enterprise some ethical issues might occur with business ownership, personnel policy, working conditions etc. These issues and ways of addressing them were depicted and interpreted from the perspective of the Church’s social teachings included in papal encyclicals, viz.: Rerum novarum, Laborem exercens, Centesimus Annus. In the Church’s social teachings a number of principles were noticed that are favourable for the ethical corporate management including the principle of the primacy of work over capital, right to private ownership, right to establish professional associations, right to fair pay, right to fulfil religious obligations and having rest during holidays, a duty to support the weak and the needy (solidarity principle). The analysis of the social content of papal encyclicals showed two faces of power. On the one hand it is necessary and has positive effects (introduction of corporate governance, taking right decisions, prevention of theft and assets devastation etc.); on the other hand improper power exercise may lead to a number of undesirable effects (corruption, worker discrimination, thriftlessness etc.) The paper identifies also sources, forms and power exercising planes in the enterprise.

    50 lat po opublikowaniu encykliki Humanae vitae, nawet w łonie samego Kościoła wybuchł ostry spór o jej zasadność. Został on następnie rozszerzony o możliwość kierowania życiem wierzących przez magisterium Kościoła oraz granice wolności wyboru człowieka życia według uznanych przez niego zasad. Dokument jest świadectwem zarówno odpowiedzialności papieża wobec Chrystusa i świata za niezmienność prawd nauczanych przez Kościół, jak i odważnego podjęcia tematów seksualnego pożycia małżonków w dobie ogólnego rozluźnienia lub zanegowania kryteriów moralnych stojących na straży nierozerwalności związku małżeńskiego. Nie dziwi, że papież sięgnął po nieliczne wprawdzie, lecz znamienne teksty biblijne, by uzasadnić wagę podejmowanych zagadnień oraz ich trwałość w odniesieniu do życia poszczególnych wierzących. Poniższy artykuł próbuje wykazać, że dobór tekstów Pisma Świętego nie tylko nie był przypadkowy, lecz całkowicie uzasadnia trudne do zaakceptowania przez współczesną mentalność prawdy poruszane w encyklice. Ze względu na ograniczone rozmiary pracy poruszone zostaną tylko te cytaty, które ukazują głębię zakotwiczenia tekstu encykliki w prawdach wynikających z nieomylnego słowa Bożego, co posiada niemały wpływ na uzasadnienie jej nienaruszalności w kwestiach moralnych szeroko pojmowanej ludzkiej płciowości w świetle nauczania Kościoła.
    The problems presented in Humanae vitae have become the object of harsh disagreement even in the Church some fifty years after the encyclical's publication. The dispute has been extended to the possibility that the Magisterium of the Church should give lay people some direction in their lives. Moreover, the disagreement has also concerned the boundaries of freedom of choice for a person who wants to live by their accepted rules. The document in question is a testimony to the pope's responsibility to Christ and the world for the immutability of truths taught by the Church. It is also a courageous testament to the issue of sexual intercourse of spouses in the age of a general slackening or negation of morals which guard the indissolubility of marriage. It comes as no surprise that the pope referred to the few – yet important – biblical texts in order to justify the rightness and significance of the undertaken issues, as well as their permanence in the lives of particular people of faith. The present paper attempts to prove that the choice of the biblical texts was not random; moreover, this paper fully justifies the truths touched upon in the encyclical which are difficult to accept in the contemporary mentality. Due to the limited character of this research, it will only deal with those quotations that show the depth of the encyclical's anchorage in the truths resulting from the infallible Scripture, which has a strong bearing on the justification of the encyclical's sanctity in the moral issues of widely understood human sexuality in the light of the Church teachings.

    The Ministry of the Eucharist and the extraordinary Ministry of Holy Communion in the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church and its pastoral practice. In view of decreasing numbers of vocations to the priesthood nowadays, the Church is facing a challenging issue of the faithful’s accessibility to the Holy Communion. Therefore, there has been a greater demand for ministers in order to distribute the Eucharistic Bread to the faithful. We need to make a distinction here between an ordinary (ordained) minister of the Holy Communion and an extraordinary one. The former can only be an ordinated priest, whereas the latter - an appropriately trained and prepared for the function lay person. In this context, important pastoral questions have been raised regarding the requirements for potential candidates and their preparation program respectively. On the other hand, it is important to take into consideration the opinion of some lay people on the purposefulness of implementation of the extraordinary ministry itself as an everyday practice in our parishes.

    Przedmiotem opracowania jest analiza wydźwięku wartości chrześcijańskich w polskich mediach, a precyzyjniej – wpływu katolickiej nauki społecznej i tradycji na polskie środki masowego przekazu. Wiele uwagi poświęcono na prezentację stanowiska Stolicy Apostolskiej (prawnomiędzynarodowego reprezentanta Kościoła rzymskokatolickiego) wobec różnego rodzaju massmediów. Dokonano analizy zarówno oficjalnych dokumentów kościelnego Magisterium odnoszących się do poruszanej tematyki, jak i zapisów Konkordatu między Stolicą Apostolską a Rzecząpospolitą Polską z 28 lipca 1993 roku, który jak każda ratyfikowana umowa międzynarodowa stanowi istotny element prawa obowiązującego w Polsce. Poza tym przedstawione zostało polskie ustawodawstwo regulujące rolę i zadania środków społecznego przekazu. Teoretyczną część pracy uzupełnia ustosunkowanie się do prezentowanych w literaturze modeli relacji na linii religia-media. Przez pryzmat tej solidnej teoretyczno-prawnej bazy, autor przyjrzał się praktyce relacji między Kościołem a polskimi mediami i wizerunkowi medialnemu dominującego w Polsce (pod względem liczby wiernych) wyznania. Opracowanie koncentruje się na mediach formalnie świeckich (głównie publicznych), choć została też odnotowana specyfika nadawców oraz wydawców religijnych.
    This paper attempts to assess in which way and in how far Christian values find their reflection in Polish mass media, or, more precisely- the influence Catholic social teaching and traditions exert on Polish media. In particular we show the official standpoint represented by the Holy See ( as the representative of the Roman Catholic Church according to international law.) in its relations with mass media. A detailed analysis of the official documents issued by the Canonical Council on this matter was carried out, as well as an investigation of the records of the Concordat between the Holy See and the Polish State signed 28 July 1993, which, like all ratified international agreements, has become an integral part of established Polish law. Furthermore, we present the applicable legal regulations referring to the role and missions of mass media. The theoretical part is rounded out by exemplary models of religion-media interaction as presented in literature. This sound theoretical and legal groundwork completed, the author examined the relation between the Catholic Church and the Polish media in practice and the reputation the most prominent church in Poland ( taking the number of believers as a basis) can enjoy in the media. The investigation focuses on secular media, even though the specificity of religious TV and broadcast stations as well as publishers was taken into account.

    This article is an attempt at analysis of the catholic Church’s position on sport activity. The starting point is a brief discussion of the relation between theology and sport. Next, there are given reasons why Church of first centuries was reluctant to sport activity. But already St. Paul referred to sport competition in order to show what is the meaning of christians’ life. In the next part, there are presented examples of how truly interested in sport were both laity and clergy catholics in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Since the beginning of twentieth century sport activity has been mentioning in the statements of the Church authorities. This paper is also showing an attitude of Popes of twentieth century to sport activity. In conclusion, there is pointed out how sport can be useful for man and what kind of sport can be an effective tool for evangelization.

    Lata 1978-1989 to w Kościele katolickim w Polsce faza dojrzała recepcji Soboru Watykańskiego II. Do najważniejszych zjawisk mających wpływ na jej przebieg należały: przemiany polskiej religijności w latach osiemdziesiątych XX w.; nowy model relacji państwo-Kościół katolicki; społeczny wymiar trzech pielgrzymek Papieża-Polaka do Ojczyzny (1979-1983-1987); zmiany personalne i pokoleniowe w Episkopacie Polski. Ważną rolę odgrywała działalność specjalistycznych Komisji Episkopatu Polski, które nadawały całemu procesowi właściwe tempo i wyznaczały główne kierunki zmian. Aplikacja nauczania soborowego w teologii polskiej zaznaczyła swoją obecność w pracach: ks. Józefa Kudasiewicza (biblistyka), ks. Józefa Tischnera (katolicka nauka społeczna), ks. Adama Ludwika Szafrańskiego (eklezjologia), o. Stanisława Celestyna Napiórkowskiego OFMConv. (mariologia, ekumenizmu), ks. Wacława Hryniewicza OMI (ekumenizm), o. Jana Charytańskiego SJ (katechetyka), ks. Franciszka Blachnickiego (teologia pastoralna i liturgika), ks. Eugeniusza Werona SAC (teologia laikatu), biskupa Wilhelma Pluty (teologia pastoralna), ks. Franciszka Woronowskiego (teologia pastoralna) oraz ks. Tadeusza Dajczera (religioznawstwo i fenomenologia religii). Publikacja czterech tomów „Liturgii Godzin” oraz wydanie w 1986 r. „Mszału Rzymskiego dla Diecezji Polskich” stanowiły zwieńczenie odnowy liturgicznej. Z kolei ukazanie się krytycznego III wydania „Biblii Tysiąclecia” (1980 r.), było realizacją postulatów zgłaszanych już w drugiej połowie lat sześćdziesiątych XX w. Kolegialność biskupów znalazła w pełni odzwierciedlenie w przepisach nowego Statutu Konferencji Episkopatu Polski (1987 r.), a synodalność rozwijała się poprzez synody. W latach 1978-1989 trwały obrady jednego synodu prowincjonalnego i dziewięciu synodów diecezjalnych. Sporym osiągnięciem ruchu ekumenicznego było zainaugurowanie dwustronnych dialogów doktrynalnych (odnośnie ważności chrztu św. oraz małżeństw mieszanych). Przystosowana odnowa życia zakonnego w dekadzie lat osiemdziesiątych XX w. miała przede wszystkim wymiar jurydyczny związany z rewizją prawa zakonnego oraz przyjęciem nowych konstytucji. Aktywność świeckich zaowocowała rozwojem wcześniej działających ruchów i stowarzyszeń oraz narodzinami nowych. Dynamiczny wzrost był udziałem Drogi Neokatechumenalnej, Katolickiej Odnowy w Duchu Świętym, Ruchu Światło-Życie, Ruchu Rodzin Nazaretańskich oraz Wspólnot Życia Chrześcijańskiego.
    The years 1978-1989 in the Catholic Church in Poland constitute a mature stage of the reception of the Second Vatican Council. Among the most important phenomena that influenced the process were: changes in Polish religious life in the 1980’s; new model of state-Church relationship, social aspect of the three pilgrimages of the Polish Pope to Poland (1979-1983-1987); personal and generational changes in Polish Episcopate. An important role was played by the activity of special Commissions of the Polish Episcopate, which gave the whole process an appropriate tempo and determined the main directions of changes. The application of council teachings in Polish theology could be found in the works of: Rev. Józef Kudasiewicz (Bible studies), Rev. Józef Tischner (Catholic Social Teaching), Rev. Adam Ludwik Szafrański (Ecclesiology), Fr. Stanisław Celestyn Napiórkowski OFMConv. (Mariology, Ecumenism), Rev. Wacław Hryniewicz OMI (Ecumenism), Fr. Jan Charytański SJ (Catechetics) Rev. Franciszek Blachnicki (Pastoral Theology and Liturgics), Rev. Eugeniusz Weron SAC (Theology of the Laity), Bishop Wilhelm Pluta (Pastoral Theology), Rev. Franciszek Woronowski (Pastoral Theology) and Rev. Tadeusz Dajczer (Religious Studies and Phenomenology of Religion). Publication of four volumes of Liturgy of Hours and Roman Missal for Polish Dioceses (1986) constituted the culmination of liturgical renewal. Publication of critical third edition of the Millennium Bible (1980) was the realization of the postulates set in the second half of the 1960’s. Collegiality of bishops was fully reflected in the regulations of the new Statute of Polish Episcopal Conference (1987), and the synodality developed through synods. In the years 1978-1989 there was one provincial synod assembly and nine diocesan synod assemblies. A considerable achievement of the ecumenical movement was the inauguration of bilateral doctrinal dialogues (about the validity of baptism and mixed marriages). The renewal of monastic life in the 1980’s was predominantly of juridical dimension connected with the revision of monastic law and adopting new constitutions. Activity of the laity resulted in the development of existing movements and associations and the creation of new ones. Neocatechumenal Way, Catholic Charismatic Renewal, Light-Life Movement, Families of Nazareth Movement and Christian Life Communities enjoyed a dynamic growth.
