Opis:
The aim of this study was to explore: 1) whether the student-teachers (as researchers) enter into a dialogue with their learners (the researched) in the course of their research; 2) what is the nature of this dialogue; 3) what role this dialogue plays in the teachers’ and the learners’ lives. In this study I draw on teachers’ narratives which were stimulated by questions which emerged after having read the research chapters of MA theses written in the field of EFL learning and teaching.

Opis:
The article outlines a universal and selective prevention program aiming at weakening the risk factors – child peer rejection and the emergence and prevalence of a low skills stereotype. It is based on the cooperation of researchers with pairs of faculty members teaching in the same 4th grade: the class host and a Polish, math or a foreign language teacher. The goal of this cooperation is to create better psychosocial development conditions in interactions with teachers and peers, diminishing the sense of helplessness during Polish and math classes, the risk of stereotypes and the school– and learning-re-lated stress. The results of the seven-month cooperation will be assessed through research conducted in 18 classes randomly assigned to the trial group (9 classes) and the control group (9 classes). The pretest, after-test and the measurement of results extended for a year after the conclusion of the program will include students with the after-test covering also teachers. The socio-economic status of students’ families will be the variable controlled for.

Opis:
In this article we explore and discuss the benefits of and the challenges that arise when using qualitative methods to conduct research internationally. We firstly discuss the relationship that writers of qualitative studies have with their readers and the implications of this for writing style. This is then followed by an overview of different aspects of data collection design. Within this section we discuss research that we have conducted, as part of a variety of international projects, using two qualitative approaches: systematic documentary research and interview. We then focus on using interview as a research method. This discussion regarding using interviews is divided into two chapters. Firstly, we discuss issues of access and sampling, then the interview itself and the analysis of interview data. The final sections involve a discussion of ways in which validity and reliability can be contextualised within qualitative studies, and also a discussion on generalisability and the possibility of theory generation. We conclude with sections on ethics and possible future directions for international qualitative studies into teacher education.

Opis:
The article is an attempt at synthesis of different approaches to the teacher’s professional competence. The author surveys selected typologies, singling out criteria of the division of competence. Then she proposes a multidimentional presentation of the structure of competence in the form of “competence diagram”, and points out the possibilities of its practical use as a tool in planning and evaluating the teachers’ training and their individual development, as well as in pedeutological research.

Opis:
Professor Z. Krygowska in her article, opening the frst issue of the PTM (Polish Mathematical Society) journal Didactics of mathematics (Dydaktyka Matematyki), (Krygowska, 1981) noted that the teacher and his preparation, and thus the problems of teaching mathematics, are never ahistorical. We live here and now, our pupils (students, doctoral students) are immersed in the contemporary time and in the current form of being. The Internet, computer games, the considerable computational capabilities even of smartphones (and, more specically, the relevant applications) - seem to solve many of the needs that were once met by mathematical skills. Mathematics is becoming more useful and, at the same time, less noticeable by people (a so-called - background usability). What 10 years ago was a strong motivating element, is now ceasing to be a problem.

Opis:
An important issue addressed in the presented article is the competencies of the RE teacher/ catechist. Two main problems are posed, summarized in the following questions: What competencies should a teacher of religion/catechist have? What qualities, according to secondary school pupils, should have an RE teacher? An attempt to answer such questions was made on the basis of an analysis of the literature on the subject and the results of a nationwide quantitative and qualitative study of secondary school pupils in Poland. The basic concepts of competence are discussed, groups of competencies relevant to the profession of religion teacher are characterized. Also presented are the results of research on the opinions of secondary school pupils regarding the person of a religion teacher/catechist.

Opis:
The article deals with teacher authority from the point of view of dilemmas it can cause when used in education. In the first part authors try to define the term dilemma in association with authority by comparing it to antinomy. The work then introduces several approaches to teacher authority dilemmas, including the ones of Fromm, Fink and other renowned scholars. Further, dilemmas associated with exercising of teacher authority are presented using examples from current research dealing with this phenomenon. The authors also present results of two of their recent surveys focusing on student teachers’ understanding of teacher authority dilemmas and teacher interaction styles that may cause them. Based on the literature and research authors in the last part of their article show most common and controversial teacher dilemmas related to the use of authority.

Different paths, one goal: American pedagogy as a scientific discipline in the first decades of its development

Opis:
Aim: to present the American concept of the development of pedagogy as a scientific discipline, with particular emphasis on the postulates and arguments of those whose operation and activities shaped the direction of the discussed processes. Methods: a content analysis presenting the visions and directions of the development of pedagogy as an academic discipline proposed by the creators of the scientific foundations of pedagogy. Results: the reconstruction of the perception of pedagogy as a field of scientific research and the postulated priorities, with particular emphasis on the cultural and social context for the undertaken research, which not only became its background, but largely determined its direction and course. Conclusions: In the United States, pedagogy as a field of scientific research was perceived mainly as a basis for searching for specific solutions aimed at improving the quality and effectiveness of the American education system, hence the need for education reforms in line with the trends typical of that period was prioritized. In this spirit, the quantitative research ordered and commissioned by the local and federal educational administration was conducted on the basis of questionnaires and tests with the aim to collect as much information and data as possible. The perspective of supporters of an interdisciplinary approach to pedagogical research, such as John Dewey, focused not so much on the measurable improvement of the quality of education, but above all on what the improvement of the education system is to serve in the individual and social perspective: on developing individuals and building a harmoniously functioning society. Among the researchers representing the faculties of education at American universities, quantitative research was becoming increasingly more popular and gained more supporters, which in turn, led to their gradual isolation, not only in the community of scientists representing social sciences, but also in relations with those who were to apply their scientific achievements in their daily work, i.e. teachers and education administration.
