This article presents a lexical analysis of the German lexeme Arsch and the Polish lexeme dupa. The departure point is the thesis that linguistic taboos connected with this vulgarism are more and more often broken. This can be observed in the numerous examples given in the text and the formative and collocational potential of the analyzed lexemes.

Opis:
Since the 1960s a progressive relaxation of social standards, accompanied by lowering of language standards, have been pointed out to occur in public space. Periodically, a rising vulgarity of language and society and a higher degree of tolerance to former taboos are described. The paper will attempt to show changes in the understanding of vulgar language and to analyse the inventory of vulgarisms used in contemporary Czech literary texts and their functions there. It will be based on texts Umělohmotný třípokoj by Petra Hůlová (2006), Teteliště zmrdů a Semeniště zmrdů (2012) by M. Kozelka and Eskejp: na útěku z kanceláře by J. Charvát (2017).

This paper presents the notion of taboo in the context of a social phenomenon identified with a strong exclusion that simultaneously binds nature and culture. Trying to define it, you can say that taboos are not just what cannot be named, what cannot be done, but also what cannot be thought of. This term is connected with a strong ban and fear. Sexual life, along with all its forms, ranging from debauchery to restraint, from promiscuity to asceticism, from what falls within a norm to pathology, connected with such topics as eroticism and procreation, is an ambiguous, shameful and hidden area of human experience. Sexuality is the source of elementary human shame. It is sometimes impure because it is related to the lower half of the body, it is sometimes violent, it may cause disorder, fighting, jealousy. On the other hand, however, it is perceived in terms of procreation as a lofty act of giving life. All manifestations of sexuality have become a taboo. This paper discusses potential breaking of sexuality taboos in the social context.

This article is meant to be a contribution to the study of the multifaceted nature of taboo and euphemism that represent those linguistic mechanisms that are created by the working of both overt and covert social and psychological factors. And so, the process of sense derogation goes hand in hand with euphemisation, the process of using a new word to refer to an item or concept that for various reasons language users hesitate to talk about straightforwardly. Once a euphemism is accepted, the original term that has been subject to replacement tends to become even less acceptable, undergoing the process of accelerated pejoration. Above the individual level, the use of a particular lexical item may be interdicted by the rules imposed by a given society or a certain sphere within a given society. The mechanisms of taboo and euphemism affect lexical items relatable to various levels of the Great Chain of Being, starting with the supra-human layer where there is the sphere of gods that has been universally subject to taboo, but also animal world where hunting taboos must ultimately be treated as a verbal tactic to obscure the hunter’s intentions; the usage rules are motivated by the fear that the hunted animals may understand the hunters’ speech and intentions.

Disgust and its application is the main category of this text, which constitutes an attempt to find associations between the category of disgust and the sexuality of the child. The author of this text is inspired by a novel by A.Czcibor-Piotrowski and tries to bare its essence. It can be an important clue for educational practice, a kind of reflexive impulse. This text, apart from the introduction, contains three key problems: disgust, upbringing of the disgust and the culture of exposure.

Article discusses linguistic conceptualisations of autoerotic activities-sexual sphere rejected culturally and linguistically, mostly in European culture. Analyses of particular linguistic forms taken from dictionaries and the Internet, are based on a broad cultural and ideological background according to methodological principles of cultural linguistics. There was especially shown an influence of religion and ideology, locating sexual activities in the field of medicine. Those discourses still “command” semiotically and linguistically of the term of autoerotism. Analysis of collected verbal constructions has shown that semantic field of autoerotism contains following elements: 1. official names (found in dictionaries); 2. Socially fixed neutral euphemisms; 3. fixed periphrases with different degree of formality (from vulgar, through colloquial and in everyday use to those used jokingly); 4. periphrases created on occasions which are the most common, also with different degree of formality.

The end of taboo? – Linguistic and functional view on the Arsch / dupa lexeme in German and Polish phraseology The analysis center includes idiomatic expressions in German and Polish with the Arsch / dupa component. The aim of the analysis is to indicate the catalog of functions that are expressed with this type of idioms and to answer the question whether the analyzed component of idiomatic expressions still exhibits features of vulgarism and is covered with language taboo. Due to the richness of the material and the multiplicity of functions of the lexeme in question which can be pointed out, one can formulate a thesis about a progressive process of taboo removal.

This study consists of two parts. The first contains a theoretical interpretation of lexeme taboo with a particular emphasis placed on the issue of etymology and varied semantics of this concept. This analysis is based on the use of dictionary definitions as well as ethnological and linguistic research. It is also significant to reveal the connection between tabooisation and security culture. The second section is an attempt of response to the question on the tabooisation of the subjects related to body and sexuality in the youth newspaper. The analytic part is intended to depict ways and reasons of this phenomenon. The combination of theoretical description and examples study is meant to illustrate the concept of safety in the context of taboo – the concept, which is nowadays defined not only as a military category, but also as a quality valued as safety culture.

The author of the article tries to use margin as a category in the history of literature. She concentrates on those writers whose works can be regarded as existing on the margins (Villon, de Sade) or those whose works feature people living „on the margins” of society. Writers often portrayed people who lived on the edge of society (Villon, Hugo, Genet), those who were rejected by society because of their individual features (Simplicyssimus, Guliwer), or those with clear philosophical ideas that were aimed at social norms and tradition (the heroes of de Sade, Rimbaud, Turgieniev). Some of these people decided to leave society to exist on its margins, use alcohol and drugs, feel alienated and unable to find their own place in the world (heroes of de Quincey, Bułhakov, Hesse).

In this paper we shall discuss the semantics of the lexical items which have been employed with reference to nakedness. The theoretical framework adopted in this article is that of cognitive linguistics, whose emergence in the second half of the 20th century gave a new impetus to semantic research. In particular, we shall discuss the words which denoted nakedness in the past, but which fell into oblivion (e.g. unbehelod, nscrȳdd), we shall also focus on the similes (e.g. as naked as a jaybird, naked as a robin, naked as a worm, naked as a needle) as well as the phrases and idioms (e.g. mother naked, belly naked, in the buff, in stag, in the altogether, in the nude, in one’s birthday suit, in a state of nature, in the raw) which pertain to the conceptual category NAKEDNESS. Furthermore, we attempt to answer the following research questions: (1) What processes are the most productive in terms of creating new synonyms of nakedness? (2) How many metaphorical schemas can be formulated on the basis of the analysis? (3) How many and which conceptual domains play a crucial role in the rise of the new lexical items whose senses are connected with the conceptual category NAKEDNESS?

The trial of Oscar Wilde, which was widely commented on in the Czech decadent magazine “Moderní revue”, not only revealed the range of the social condemnation of homosexuality,but also opened a discussion about distinctive features of the homosexual identity. The poetry and prose of Jiří Karásek from Lvovice, in the common opinion representing first of all the decadent world outlook, may be regarded as an attempt to bring closer these determinants of the homoerotic way of love and life to the reader. To accomplish this task the writer needed to find out the appropriate literary medium. Karásek rediscovered it in devices of symbolic and decadent poetics, which enable to replace the literal senses of representation by means of semantic undecidability. This solution allowed him to suggest the personal sincerity of the literaryexpression and to avoid allegations of affectations and decadent pose.

The focus of the article is literary approach to the emotion of shame. My thesis is that literature can be perceived as a helpful tool for overcoming shame, because it can present most intimate human experiences in aesthetic terms, free from stereotypical moral judgments. From this perspective I distinguish between exhibitionistic tendencies on the author’s side and complementary voyeuristic impulse on the side of the reader. In this context I consider also the phenomenon of literary provocation and its function. In the next step I analyze two examples from Polish contemporary literature, a literary pregnancy diary Polka of M. Gretkowska and a gay-novel Lubiewo of M. Witkowski, which are in my opinion interesting proposals of aesthetic view on intimate but also relevant aspects of everyday life.

The authors of the article answer the question how young people understand the concept of taboo language and communication situations with which they are associated. The basis of considerations are the results of a survey conducted among 120 students of first and second degree (undergraduate and graduate) of the Faculty of Polish and Classical Philology of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. It turns out that the young humanists understand very well the concept of taboo, they can identify topics covered by the taboos and rules for compliance. They do not indicate either that the taboo passed to the sphere of phenomena recessive.

Buzz marketing in social networks is often seen by announcers as an opportunity to reach the biggest audience. However, the risk of failure of buzz campaigns proves not to be negligible and its consequences may be serious for the company. In order to succeed in such buzz campaigns, this research study focuses on cultural aspects, and more particularly on the central role of cultural congruency. To explore these aspects, a qualitative study, based on 36 face-to-face interviews with marketing professionals/advertisers and consumers, has been carried out. The results highlight the importance of cultural values for consumers in Arab-Muslim countries, especially when buzz marketing campaigns touch the taboos. Terms used in the advertisement are also decisive in the success of a buzz campaign.
