Opis:
The aim of the study is to investigate the impact the non-existent theatre sites exert on the contemporary spaces of Warsaw and to answer the following question: Do the non-existent theatres Warsaw theatre area, exist in the city architectural and urban-planning memory, or only in historical materials? The research methods necessary to define and solve the scientific problem that were applied included: analysis and criticism of source literature, observation without intervention, case study, intuitive method based on the Author’s personal experience. The research results showed that Warsaw theatre area operated in the years 1870–1939 Teatr Letni [The Summer Theatre], Teatr Nowy [The New Theatre] and Teatr Nowości [The Novelty Theatre] / / Teatr im. Wojciecha Bogusławskiego [Wojciech Bogusławski’s Theatre] failed to leave an architectural, urban- planning or symbolic trace. Hence the conclusion that these theatres do not exist in the city architectural and urban memory.

Opis:
The article examines film productions of London’s National Theatre, which are based on its most famous performances. The author discusses the techniques used to produce cinematic versions of the plays and analyses the methods of re-creating the theatrical experience as well as the way it affects the models of theatre reception. His starting point is the thesis that this form of transmitting the theatrical experience serves to impose a specific, mainstream cultural model whose impact is strengthened by the use of new media. Subject to the media treatment, the theatrical experience becomes more intense and gives the spectator an illusion of more direct contact with the work than a traditional visit to the theatre. The processed experience has the potential to create new cultural models whose predominant characteristic is the pleasure of reception.

The article is devoted to the narrative theatre. Performances that represent this trend bring in to the scene, in various ways, the character of the narrator. In this draft, the theatre character has been subjected to a detailed analysis, since the character itself determines the specificity of this kind of perfoman- ces. Ivan Vyrypayevʼs July and Irena Jun’s Dinner at Countess Pavahoke’s (Biesiada u hrabiny Kotłubaj) served as research material. The author of the article, starting from H. Lehmann’s book on Postdramatic Theatre, compa- res among others the narrative theatre with the Brecht’s epic theatre.

Zastosowano metody badań niezbędne do zdefiniowania i rozwiązania problemu naukowego: analizy i krytyki piśmiennictwa, obserwacji bez interwencji, studium przypadku, intuicyjną opartą na osobistych doświadczeniach autorki; podstawą wniosków były badania in situ.

Television Theatre is a specific genre that is a characteristic unique to Polish media. It began with the creation of TV. In the beginning it aimed only at transferring traditional theatrical shows into a new medium. It became very popular with live transmissions of theatrical shows from TV studios. Later it adopted new technical and staging possibilities. It has evolved over the years, creating different styles and tendencies, due to the development of television itself and the achievements of the theoreticians as well as people involved in theatrical productions. Lately it has also turned to the Internet and because of that a mass audience has gained access to a high art form.

Polish contemporary theatre development of theatre in Poland commercial theatre

Opis:
Musical theatre in Poland entered a new stage in its history after 1989. Being forced to exist in a new economical situation, it had to develop a new organization model, different from the one it was using for last 45 years. Managing directors of such theatres as Musical Thea-tre in Gdynia, Musical Theatre Roma in Warsaw or Musical Theatre in Wrocław reformed their institutions, introducing strategies present in the Western theatrical world, for example castings for performers, giving up permanent theatrical groups etc. In theatres in Gdynia, Warsaw and in Rozrywka Theatre in Chorzów many Polish premieres of worldwide known musicals took place. Artistic and technical quality of Musical Theatre Roma in Warsaw reached the levels of European theatres of that type. Theatre in Wrocław, that has changed its name into Musical Theatre Capitol, became the leading centre of sophisticated musical theatre. Wojciech Kościelniak, connected with theatres in Gdynia and Wrocław, has directed many new and original musicals, based usually on outstanding literary works. Kościelniak is one of the most interesting personalities of contemporary Polish musical theatre.

The text presents the process of transformation of the organizational structure of the Węgajty Theatre and the related reformation of the group dynamics and methods of creative work. In the group’s complex organizational history, the turning point was the loss of permanent institutional support in 2011. After twenty-five years of work under the auspices of various cultural institutions in Olsztyn, the Węgajty Theatre was forced to function as a non-governmental organization. The text shows the impact of the grant system on the Theatre's activities and its strategies developed for conducting artistic work. Węgajty's most crucial activity, if the group is considered as a formation project, is the work of the Other Theatre School. The original form of artistic education is combined at the School with a return to socially engaged issues. The text also presents the pros and cons of a social cooperative created at the Węgajty Theatre to stabilize its financial situation.

Opis:
The paper concerns some elements of the construction of worlds represented on stage in recent Polish theatre. This may be seen as a comment on the state of democratic Poland after 1989 and, more generally, as an analysis of the peculiarities of the contemporary world. However, a deeper analysis shows recent theatre staging as structurally similar to the construction of dystopias. The worlds represented on stage are characterized by the presence of a nonlinear construction of time, by the absence of ending, of a horizon and of death, by the presence of ruins (intended literally, as an aesthetic paradigm, and metaphorically) and by the construction of dystopian characters. The analysis focuses on one of the most important performances for the Polish political theatre of the last two decades, H. (2004), a version of Hamlet directed by Jan Klata, performed in the historic and derelict Gdańsk Shipyard, a symbolic stage set which becomes at the same time the place of fulfilment of dystopia and of the emergence of the desire for utopia.

Opis:
The paper attempts to distinguish film recordings of theater from the TV theater genre. The decisive criterion for this distinction proposed by the author is the chronology of the production process - film recordings of theater performances provide a record of pre-existing theater performances, whereas TV theatre includes all theatre-like productions created for the small screen and which do not have their own stage ‘odginali In each of these cases there are different tasks and difficulties facing producers and executors. The next part of the article focuses on film recordings of theater: the reasons for which they are made (documentation, dissemination, promotion) and the differences between their types. Referring to the work of Jacek Wachowski, the author also presents a brief discussion about the possibilities and consequences of technical mediation of any performances, not only theatrical shows. The article concludes with an attempt to define the status of the film recording of a performance in relation to its original theatrical nature (the “residuum of the theater”).

These are: the presentation status of such groups, the dangers of subjectivism or the necessity of implementing the qualitative research model, the methods of research documentation.

Opis:
This piece of work is an attempt, grounded in artistic practice, to describe several key aspects of the mechanisms of hierarchy, power and violence in Polish theatre taking into account the perspective of a woman director. These mechanisms are currently the subject of theoretical studies and discussions within the community. In this paper I would like to propose a look “from the inside.” There is a historical and theoretical part followed by an attempt to analyse the mechanisms of power-sharing in theatre based on a discussion on competitions for the position of theatre manager, taking into consideration the criteria that discriminated against women for years, and the unspoken assumptions. This is followed by a self-reflection on the evolution of the author’s own working methods as a director with almost twenty years of artistic experience, and finally a description of the hierarchical relationships between an actress, a director and a manager, and of the political mechanisms involved. The second part of the paper is empirical in nature and is based primarily on the author’s experience of working at the Teatr Polski in Warsaw as well as her active participation in professional and public debate. It also describes the tension between the possibility of individual professional success and the permanence of anachronistic and violent systemic mechanisms of functioning of the institution of theatre.
