The coat of arms for the town and commune of Szadek was designed and approved in 1990, in accordance with law in force at that time. It was, however, done without consulting heraldists and historians specializing in municipal coats of arms from the period of I Republic of Poland, or persons professionally designing emblems for contemporary municipalities. Consequently, a number of mistakes were made, the most important being that it only partly resembles the town’s heraldic arms from the mid-16th century or the coat of arms from the 17th century, which was incorporated in the altar of Szadek’s parish church to commemorate the citizens who donated funds for its equipment and decoration. According to current quidelines for re-creating coats of arms of urban communes, a municipality should have as its heraldic symbol the historic coat of arms of its capital town or city. Relevant sources indicate that the new emblem of the town and commune of Szadek should contain a city wall with an open gate and three battlemented towers, the exact shape depending on which tradition – 16th or 17th century – is recalled. As regards the heraldic colours, the new coat of arms should have red walls on a golden shield (like that from the 17th century), although a white background is also found for Szadek in publications on heraldic arms of Polish towns and cities.

The stamp of the shoemakers’ guild in Szadek was made at the beginning of the 19th century, in accordance with legal regulations of 1816, which reorganized craftsmen’s guilds in the Kingdom of Poland. These regulations, in force throughout the whole 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century, defined the structure and the way of managing a guild, professional competences of masters and craftsmen, and rules for professional advance. The regulations of 1816 also affected the shape and functions of craftsmen’s stamps. Under these rules, a guild was governed by a board of elders, which was reflected in the legends of the stamps. The term “profession” to refer to the work of craftsmen was introduced at that time. The legend of the seal of the shoemakers’ guild in Szadek speaks about “the shoemakers’ profession”. As regards the appearance of craftsmen’s stamps, they differed from other official stamps (e.g. those of administrative authorities) of the Kingdom of Poland in that they contained elements representative of particular “professions”. In the case of Szadek shoemakers’ it was a high boot with a heel spur, a knife and an awl. This stamp was evidently carved by a very skilful engraver. It is now part of the collection of the Sieradz Museum.

The journal “Kaliszanin” issued in Kalisz in 1870–1892 published central and local government decrees, information about the city and its neighborhood, historical articles, theatre reviews, political, economic and cultural news, literature, reports on the activity of social organizations, letters from readers, and correspondence from the country and from abroad. This article reviews the correspondence sent from Szadek to the journal, which provides an interesting source of information about the town and the surrounding area in the second half of 19th century.

Opis:
A survey of parish church in Szadek under the invocation of Assumption of Our Lady and Saint James the Apostle, was done for the purposes of conservation works carried out in the church building. Archeological work Was conducted in one excavation only, 2 m X 1 m large, situated close to the south Wall of the presbytery at the level of the middle buttress. The reason for choosing this site for excavation Work was that a large crack in the Wall Was noticed in this place. During exploration of the successive layers 13 graves were discovered. The artefacts unearthed included 137 fragments of earthenware, 23 pieces of building ceramics, 8 metal pieces, 15 fragments of window glass and two pieces of glassware. The objects found in the excavation can be dated at 13th/14th-19th centuries.

Under the Act on local government of 8 March 1990 communes gained legal personality and financial autonomy. To be able to provide for the needs of local communities, communes obtained considerable property, mainly real estate. Municipal real property, which consists of land and buildings, is an important factor in the development of communes. In Szadek, communal land constitutes 5.7% of the town’s area, and municipal flats make up 8.75% of all flats. Municipal estate should be used primarily for public purposes and for providing for local housing need. Other uses include undertakings serving commune development and organized investment activity. In addition, municipal real property trading is an important source of local government income.

Opis:
Infrastructure development by local governments in Poland is among the most important and the most difficult (in financial terms) local undertakings. In many cases the only possibility to expand or modernise the existing infrastructure is to secure external funding, i.e. to obtain non-budgetary funds. This is particularly important for small communes, where revenues do not meet their needs. Szadek is an example of such a commune. External funding covered about 50% of municipal infrastructure development costs in the period 1995–2007, which is an average value for small communes in the region of Łódź. The commune of Szadek is also an example of insufficient efforts to obtain EU funding for infrastructure development projects intended to enhance the quality of the natural environment and the quality of life of the inhabitants.

Opis:
Szadek – a town fulfilling in the past important administrative and socio-economic functions – is found on almost all maps of old Poland’s territory. Therefore plentiful archival material is kept in the Central Archive of Old Documents in Warsaw and Public Records Office in Łódź. It allows various studies on the history of Szadek and its inhabitants to be conducted, but the town’s spatial structure – both its origins and stages of development – can be studied on the basis of cartographic sources from the 19th century, especially several hand-drawn general plans. The article presents cartographic material kept in the Central Archive of Old Documents, with a particular focus on three plans of the town drawn up in the mid-19th century. They make it possible to trace changes in the spatial structure of the town and the character of construction work carried out at that time.
