The research topic follows, firstly, from the fact that there is a need to examine the scientific schools of the 21st century. Secondly, the general tendency towards the re-ideologization of political science requires a critical interpretation of the state of affairs in the Russian Federation and Ukraine. Thirdly, in Ukraine and in the countries that are its allies, the theoretical analysis of historiography should be particularly helpful in offering a more clear definition of the former and current ideological positions of the aggressor country (the Russian Federation). The article compares the Russian and Ukrainian schools of political science, which have explored the impact on CEE of such actors as the EU, NATO, the USA, and Germany, as well as the economic, political, and ideological components of the systemic transformation.

Attempts to reform the Polish economy made in the 80's of the twentieth century have failed. More and more economists and politicians were aware of the need to change the economic system. In early 1990 began to implement Balcerowicz plan, which aimed to transform the economy from a centrally managed to market economy. Realities of economic life corrected optimistic assumptions of the plan. Assessment of the effects of transformation till today divide economists and polish society. In recent years growing number of studies describing course and effects of economic transformation. In 2011 published two important books: M.G. Woźniak monograph and collective work edited by W. Jarmołowicz and K. Szarzec. Both books introduce systemic transformation process from a different perspective, both slightly different estimates the effects. Critical assessment has been made in Woźniak book, more positive evaluation gave the Poznań team of economists led by W. Jarmołowicz. Article draws attention to the diversity of economists positions in the native environment.

Poland’s transformation occurs in individuals’ attitudes and behaviour. Several years ago, the entrepreneur in Poland was associated with corruption and border-line legal activities. Today, many entrepreneurs are looked upon as positive role models. Social acceptance of entrepreneurial attitudes in Poland is growing. Increased susceptibility to entrepreneurial behaviour in a society will increase the rate at which new businesses are established, enhancing market dynamics, and accelerating innovative changes. But in Poland entrepreneurs are not seen as a positive example, unlike in the United States. Willingness to take risks, self-expression and independence are not met with social acceptance, especially if rewarded with high incomes. The research undertaken by the author is aimed at analysing the essence of entrepreneurial attitudes and changes in the social acceptance of entrepreneurial behaviour.

It has been defined the specific scientific definition of lustration, as political practices in the countries of postcomunìsm. In particular, two approaches in its interpretation are outlined: the traditional – removing individuals from participating in political life or legal punishment for actions during the previous regime, retroactive – disclosure of information about certain actions, and the persons that were recognized as criminals, punishment in this case carried primarily a moral character. It has been outlined the five factors that determine the success of the lustration practices: the moral authority and the political will of the new Government; support the idea of cleansing, upgrading power structures in society; the presence of the legislative framework that carries the standards of international law, which is based on the world experience; saving archives (documents), based on which one can set the criminal actions of the authorities; the existence of personnel, capable and worthy to carry out the lustration law. It has been defined that in Poland and the Czech Republic the identified factors have had a different weight, but the common features to both countries were: the process of “wildlife lustration”, as well as the avoidance of the lustration procedures of significant part of the past regime collaborators. It has been determined the specifics of lustration in Poland and Czech Republic in the period of postcomunìsm. In particular, in Poland lustration started much later than the systemic transformation, the present process is not completed (not in the legal field, or in the practical implementation). It has been taken place the retrospective type – which is aimed, mainly, on the restoration of historical justice. In the Czech Republic, on the contrary, the lustration started simultaneously with the transformation changes, aimed to protect, first of all, the new State from abuse authoritarian last (a promising type). The Czech Republic is one of the few countries of postcomunìsm where this practice had the completed character in the legal aspect. It is emphasized that these different types of lustration in Poland and the Czech Republic were caused by different types of transformation. In Poland reformist and compromise nature of systemic changes actually made the conduct of lustration fast and efficient. In the Czech Republic revolutionary transformation, on contrary, have caused rapid adoption of laws on lustration law: under the pressure of society’s new elite were forced unpopular changes which were contrary to the persuasion and personal prejudice.

The article analyses Max Weber’s position regarding the so-called Polish question from the point of view of post-colonial theory. The author discusses the circumstances of Weber’s scientific interest in the Polish question and offers an interpretation of his statements in this regard. Then, she moves on to explore the relationship between this early inspiration and the subsequent development of Weber’s comparative historical sociology, whereupon follows an outline of its post-colonial criticism. The article concludes with a suggestion of applying the author’s approach to studying the post-communist transformation and transitological debates in Poland.

The book by Olga Drenda Duchologia polska. Rzeczy i ludzie w latach transformacji, whose title can be rendered in English as Polish Hauntology: Things and People in the Transformation Period, is a kind of anthropological travel in time: to the past that is not too distant, that is still remembered, and still visible in Polish streets. The work covers the “haunted time” between 1987 and 1994, when Polish society underwent significant social, cultural, economic and political changes, joining liberal democracies and liberal free market economies. Drenda depicts several phases of the transition, related to the ineffectiveness of the socialist system, political changes towards democracy (with the Round Table Agreements and semi-free elections of 1989 as the landmarks of this process), and the gradual adaptation to a new social system.

Exploitation films are one of the main trends of the Serbian cinema of the beginning of the 21st century, when Serbia enters the second phase of systemic transformation, striving to neutralize the effects of the crisis in the first phase of transformation – towards the end of the 20th century – due to the authoritarian policy of Slobodan Milošević and Yugoslav wars. This non-film context allows better understanding of the phenomenon of these films, which in many respects are a continuation of the cinema of self-balkanization cultivated in the 1990s, and at the same time differ from it, because they do not offer a compromise with difficult transformational reality, but express the need to release the social trauma born of experience of political violence in the Milošević era.

The article describes the commodification process, focusing on the sphere of labour. The specificity of the approach consists of treating labour as a component of the systemic transformation of the Polish society. The Polish people, on their way from real socialism to market democracy, are undergoing a particularly intense commodification process. This process has been intensified by Poland’s accession to the European Union and by globalisation, due to participation in supranational market systems at the regional (European) and global levels. Empirically, the commodification process has been analysed using awareness studies. Subjects were young inhabitants of Warsaw with higher education, and the study results were additionally related to nationallevel research. The labour sphere is seen here as a key element of the wider social reality and it is studied empirically in terms of individual orientations which the subjects exhibit towards normative social models. The processes of commodification and de-commodification are seen in the context of the systemic transformation from centralised-autocratic to the market-democratic models of society. Attention has also been paid to the role of the welfare state, whose key function is to protect citizens from major risks, including the risk of being unemployed. The empirical study clearly shows the specificity of labour in commodification processes. Labour was shown to be an element that stands out from the other elements of the social system.

The objective of this paper is to assess and forecast (scenario) changes in effectiveness of geography teaching, taking place as a result of transformation of education system. Assessment of education system reform is based on analysis of the survey conducted among teachers and results of the tests taken by students in their second year in secondary junior schools in 2000 and 2010. The scenario assumes mainly a decrease of teaching level and education quality. Discrepancies between theoretical assumptions and school practice, both in relation to curricula, grading system, school-system funding, supervision and management in education are the main threats to decreasing effectiveness of teaching.

Since 1989, the transitions have been made in Central and Eastern Europe, in political science those changes are described and explained in terms of „sys-temic transformation”. One of the three main goals of transformation in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe was not only introducing a system of freedom, democracy, the country of law and market economy but also the crea-tion of civil society. The changes from 1990 to 1992 in the political and eco-nomic life of Lithuania and the building of a democratic system were based on the implementation of the principle of national sovereignty, separation of pow-ers, rule of law, political pluralism and providing democratic, stable govern-ment. Since 1990, the political system and legal elements shaping it in Lithuania have been constantly transformed. It is difficult to conclude when the political system and the building of civil society will have reached the level of a consoli-dated democracy.

Venture capital (VC), called high risk or high chance capital, as financial instrument of capitalistic highly developed countries, has not been recognized in Poland for a long time. The reason of his origin was structural transition of polish economy, which was accompanied by the privatization and necessity of reconstruction of the capital market. Those processes needed financing, and in the role of venture capital was seen. During the last fifteen years the role, the importance and the way of functioning of venture capital market in Poland have been changed. However, always it was visible its positive influence on the entrepreneurship development, creation of stable financial system and on the economy at all. That is why, more often the government and other authorities undertake initiatives which should help to develop this small, but so important, part of capital market. Till the end of 2004, venture capital funds have invested in Poland more than 5,7 mid PLN, financing by this way mainly small and medium sized enterprises. And their investment preferences were very various, as in terms of economy sector, as in terms of size of enterprises. However, the fact is they always invest in enterprises risky, but those who have a big chance to growth. The aim of this paper is presenting fifteen years old history of polish venture capital market, showing how it is look nowadays and introduce perspectives on his development in the future. I will also present in it how, during this time, the structure, the way of operating and the number of institution involved in the venture capital market (mainly venture capital funds) have been changed.

The article is an analysis of a single case-a biographical narrative of a Tri-City resident who enters adulthood at the beginning of political transformation in 1989, and whose life path turns out to be an unintentional, dynamic journey between various professions, social worlds and structural positions. This creates a complicated and ambiguous biographical pattern which does not fall into either the socio-economic promotion of the “winner” or into the degradation of the transformation “loser.” The reconstruction of this pattern reveals the hero’s great resourcefulness and entrepreneurship, but also the fragility of the structures stabilizing his life and the volatility of life orientation points. The binder of this biography turns out to be, above all, reflexivity and, what I suggest calling, the narrative agency of the narrator, who can transform his structurally dispersed and chaotic life experiences of the time of transformation into a very original story, making him a strong subject of his own fate. This, however, creates the inevitable tension between the experienced or lived life, life history and the narrated life, life story, prompting us to again pose the question about the commonly assumed, although differently defined, correspondence between the level of reality and the level of its linguistic (in this case-autobiographical) representation.

The paper deals with the formation of a new national identity in Belarus under conditions of post-Soviet transformation. Under the term of "national identity" the author means the identity of the population of the Republic of Belarus that will be adequate to its status of a newly independent state acquired after 1991. Special attention is paid to the existing major research approaches to the problem of constructing this national identity. According to the author's view, both major approaches are inadequate; the author puts forward a new (third) approach that goes beyond discussions on language and national culture, and corresponds to the concept of plurality of identities. The author describes some paradoxes of national identity based on the opposition of "nation" and "people". These correspond to the Western model of the "creation of modern nations", which is not fully applicable to post-Soviet Belarus. All attempts to apply this model to contemporary Belarus lead scholars to several "cultural paradoxes" that can, however, be explained within a new approach.
