    This article on Varoufakis’s book, Adults in The Room: My Battle with Europe’s Deep Establishment (2017) and about what happened in Greece in 2015 is a guide for left-leaning readers who are not happy with the dominant narrative meted out by the mainstream media and the Troika-controlled governments. These readers are also dissatisfied with the former Greek Finance Minister’s version. As a counterpoint to Varoufakis’s story, I have highlighted events that he is silent about, and I have expressed different views on what he should have done and what he did instead. My story runs parallel, and not opposite, to his. It is crucial to thoroughly analyse the policy implemented by the Varoufakis-Tsipras government because, for the first time in the 21st century, a radical left-wing government was elected in Europe. If we want to avoid another disaster, it is absolutely vital to identify the flaws and understand what went wrong. This critique of the Greek government’s policy in 2015 is not primarily meant to point out the respective responsibilities of Tsipras or Varoufakis as individuals. It is imperative to analyse the politico-economic orientation that was followed, so that we can ascertain the causes of failure, understand what could have been tried instead, and learn what a radical left-wing government can do in a country in the periphery of the Eurozone.

    What are the consequences of Syriza coming to power in Greece in 2015? Did it become a new Weimar Germany for the future Europe? In this article we test the hypothesis that winning two consecutive parliamentary elections in 2015 and forming a government contributed to a farther institutionalisation of this party within the rules of Greek democracy. This article is based on data from the Greek Ministry of Interior and the website of the Greek parliament. This text aims at presenting the process of transformation of Syriza - a radical, left-wing, anti-establishment and anti-austerity party into a governmental entity, pro systemic and accepting the principle of the democratic state of law. All this was due to the establishing of the governmental coalition with ANEL, a nationalist party; social-economic reforms; the reform of the electoral system for parliamentary elections; the proposal of a constitutional reform and the ending of the nearly 30-year dispute with Macedonia. The electoral failure during the parliamentary elections on the 7th of July 2019 finishes a 4-year governance of Syriza and enables us to try to evaluate this experiment for the first time. A key finding of our investigation is the need to highlight the respect for the democratic rules by Syriza during its government and its further institutionalisation as one of the main groupings of the contemporary party system in Greece.

    Autorka w artykule poddaje analizie trzy lata rządów lewicowej SYRIZY w Grecji. Omawia podłoże historycznego zwycięstwa partii pod wodzą Aleksisa Tsiprasa w wyborach parlamentarnych w 2015 r. Ponadto analizuje przebieg negocjacji z greckimi wierzycielami dotyczącymi III programu pomocowego. Zwraca też uwagę na konieczność stopniowego odchodzenia od sprzeciwu wobec polityki oszczędności oraz reakcje społeczne na wprowadzane reformy. W końcowej części, autorka pracy wskazuje na bieżące wyzwania rządu greckiego.
    In the paper, the author analyses three years of the rule of the left-wing SYRIZA in Greece. She discusses the basis of the party’s historical victory in the parliamentary elections in 2015. In addition, she analyses the course of negotiations with Greek creditors regarding the third economic adjustment programme for Greece. She also points out the necessity of gradual resignation from anti-austerity agenda and social reactions against introduced reforms. In the final part, the author of the paper outlines the current challenges of the Greek government.

    The article analyzes the reasons and consequences of the spread of the ideology of left populism in Greece. It has been established that the success of the SYRIZA Coalition of Left Radical Forces, which was in power in Greece during 2015-2019, was facilitated by a number of factors. The most important among them: the popularity of leftist ideas in the social and political space of Greece; the traditions of populism inherent in most of the country’s political forces; unbalanced fiscal policy, structural macroeconomic imbalances, low statistical reliability and significant government debt; the world economic crisis of 2008-2009; deterioration of social standards and demographic indicators, the spread of unemployment; negative impact of the migration crisis; the tough position of Greece’s creditors, on whom public opinion blamed the country’s socio-economic problems. It is noted that the phenomenon of left populism in Greece was the fact that immediately after the victory in the elections, SYRIZA, sandwiched between the demands of creditors and the real state of the economy, abandoned radical left populist ideas and was forced to pursue a neoliberal economic policy. Already in 2016, the country returned to slow economic growth, and in 2018 the financial assistance program was completed. However, due to the failure to fulfill its own campaign promises, SYRIZA lost power in the 2019 elections and took a centrist place in the Greek political system. A significant merit of the SYRIZA Coalition of Radical Left Forces was the successful resolution of an almost thirty-year dispute with North Macedonia over the name of the latter. The opinion is substantiated that for Ukraine the main conclusion from the analysis of the Greek events of the early XXIst century is the realization of the fact that the complex problems of a political and socio-economic nature that face our country do not have a simple and quick solution. To achieve success, Ukraine must consistently defend its own national interests, strengthen sovereignty and independence, and pursue a balanced budgetary and financial and economic policy.
    У статті проаналізовано причини і наслідки поширення ідеології лівого популізму у Греції. Встановлено, що успіху Коаліції ліворадикальних сил СІРІЗА, яка перебувала при владі у Греції протягом 2015-2019 рр., сприяла низка чинників. Найважливіші серед них: популярність лівих ідей у суспільно-політичному просторі Греції; традиції популізму, які притаманні більшості політичних сил країни; незбалансована бюджетно-фінансова політика, структурні макроекономічні дисбаланси, низька достовірність статистичних даних та значний державний борг; світова фінансово-економічна криза 2008-2009 рр.; погіршення соціальних стандартів та демографічних показників, поширення безробіття; негативний вплив міграційної кризи; жорстка позиція кредиторів Греції, на яких суспільна думка перекладала відповідальність за соціально-економічні проблеми країни. Зазначається, що феноменом лівого популізму у Греції став той факт, що відразу після перемоги на виборах Коаліція радикальних лівих СІРІЗА, затиснута між вимогами кредиторів і реальним станом економіки, відмовилась від ліворадикальних популістських ідей і була вимушена проводити неоліберальну економічну політику. Вже у 2016 р. країна повернулася до повільного економічного зростання, а у 2018 р. була завершена програма фінансової допомоги. Проте через невиконання власних передвиборних обіцянок СІРІЗА втратила владу на виборах 2019 р. і зайняла центристське місце у політичній системі Греції. Вагомою заслугою Коаліції ліворадикальних сил СІРІЗА стало успішне вирішення майже тридцятирічної суперечки із Північною Македонією щодо назви останньої. Обґрунтовується думка, що для України головний висновок із аналізу грецьких подій початку ХХІ ст. полягає в усвідомленні того факту, що складні проблеми політичного та соціально-економічного характеру, які постали перед нашої країною, не мають простого і швидкого вирішення. Щоб досягти успіху, Україна повинна послідовно захищати власні національні інтереси, зміцнювати суверенітет і незалежність, проводити збалансовану бюджетну та фінансово-економічну політику.

    Opis:
    This article traces and analyses the narrative of the “veil debate” in France and Turkey as constructed by two Greek newspapers: the liberal Kathimerini and the leftist Avgi. It aims, firstly, to bring out the interconnection between the political ideological orientation of each of these newspapers and the narrative that they adopt, and secondly, to shed light on how the peculiarities of the socio-political context intersect with the narrator’s interests and preferences in the process of building the framework for public discussion in Greece. It concludes that the Greek narration of the “veil debate” in France and Turkey runs along normative lines (irrespective of the newspaper’s ideological affiliation), challenges the validity of Westphalian values, reflects the interdependence between socio-political contexts, and takes into consideration the supranational discourse of Greek foreign policy.
    Artykuł przedstawia i analizuje narrację dotyczącą dyskusji poświęconej praktyce zakrywania głowy we Francji i Turcji, przyjętą przez dwie greckie gazety: liberalną Kathimerini i lewicową Avgi. Celem opracowania jest po pierwsze ukazanie związków między orientacją polityczno-ideologiczną obu gazet a przyjmowaną w nich narracją. Po drugie, zamierzeniem Autorki jest naświetlenie kwestii, w jaki sposób specyfika kontekstu społeczno-politycznego krzyżuje się z interesami i preferencjami narratora dotyczącymi kształtowania ram prowadzonej w Grecji dyskusji publicznej. Jednym z wyprowadzonych wniosków jest to, że grecka narracja dotycząca praktyki zakrywania głów we Francji i Turcji ma charakter normatywny (bez względu na ideologiczną afiliację danej gazety), kwestionuje ważność westfalskich wartości, odzwierciedla wzajemną zależność kontekstów społeczno-politycznych i uwzględnia ponadpaństwowy dyskurs greckiej polityki zagranicznej.
