The author of the paper analyzes verbs ‘talk’ and ‘think’ found in texts by I. NechujLevitsky. Many of those verbs and their synonyms together with their metaphorical and phraseological uses are applied to reconstruct their semantic fields. The language means used to illustrate and describe the processes of talking and thinking analyzed in the paper make it possible to conclude that the frequent occurrence of those verbs in his texts is a characteristic feature of Nechuj-Levitsky’s personal style.

This article analyzes the borders of synonyms of the Russian and Polish lexeme “life” in the ordinary consciousness of native speakers. The analysis of the results of interviews, as well as the electronic dictionary of synonyms, which is formed by the users themselves, demonstrate that in the consciousness of native speakers there are broader synonymic groups compared with those that are fixed in traditional dictionaries. Synonymic groups which are proposed by native speakers show that the main criterion for establishing the proximity of the meaning of words for a person is the ability to correlate on the basis of identity, similarity or inclusion certain fragments of reality denoted by these lexemes. The synonymy of sеnse, rather than of meanings, is the determining factor for the native speaker in the formation of a synonymic group

Persistence of Synonymy in Polish Medical Terminology at the Turn of the Nineteenth and Twentieth CenturiesThis article presents the results of an analysis of 940 synonymic strings excerpted from two translated medical dictionaries: Słownik terminologii lekarskiej polskiej [A Dictionary of Polish Medical Terminology], published in 1881, and Słownik lekarski polski [A Polish Medical Dictionary], published in 1905. The analysis of quantitative and qualitative changes in those strings indicates a significant persistence (703 preserved strings) and stability of synonymy (320 strings with the same number of terms and the same composition of synonyms).Trwałość synonimii w polskiej terminologii medycznej przełomu XIX i XX wiekuArtykuł przedstawia wyniki analizy 940 ciągów synonimicznych wyekscerpowanych ze Słownika terminologii lekarskiej polskiej, wydanego w 1881 roku, i Słownika lekarskiego polskiego, wydanego w 1905 roku; obydwa słowniki to leksykony przekładowe. Analiza ilościowych i jakościowych zmian tych ciągów wykazała znaczną trwałość i stabilność synonimii (703 zachowane ciągi, 320 ciągów o niezmienionej liczbie terminów i niezmienionym składzie synonimów).

In the below article the whole attention was directed on an image of the woman coded in Russian language, precisely in proverbs. As a basis material of the article were chosen mainly the proverbs due to their repeatability, stereotype which is strengthened in the language. The subject of the article’s analysis is the linguistic image of woman in the Russian proverbs, which is composed of the two stereotypes: negative and positive. In the article the attention was paid to the synonyms of the word „woman”, which appear in the proverbs and have different emotional tinge and valuate world of women.

At the dawn of Middle English, the language saw a number of different terms referring to the process of translation. The plethora of terms and meanings seems to mirror the attitude of medieval scribes and authors towards translation, understood as presenting, explaining, and interpreting, and, finally, transferring the message from one language to another. After the Norman Conquest, however, the meaning of ‘transfer between languages’ starts to disappear with the exception of native WENDEN, which is still used in this sense in mid 13th century. Finally, the language borrows the foreign term TRANSLATEN, which at the end of the 13th century starts to function along WENDEN and TURNEN in the meaning of ‘transferring, changing, replacing’, and in the 14th century acquires the literal meaning of ‘translate’, marginalizing or eliminating older forms. The paper focuses on the loss of the meaning ‘to translate’ from the semantic domains of the native verbs and the pattern of its replacement by the foreign term to indicate ‘transfer of a message between two languages.’

The article is dedicated to Ukrainian onomastic terminology, which still requires systematisation and unification. The first part of the article briefly examines the formation of onomastic terminology in Ukrainian scholarly tradition and some of the difficulties associated with the use of onomastic terms in literature. Artykuł jest poświęcony ukraińskiej terminologii onomastycznej, która nadal wymaga systematyzacji i unifikacji. Jego pierwsza część przedstawia w zarysie tworzenie terminologii onomastycznej na Ukrainie oraz kilka trudności związanych z używaniem terminologii tej w literaturze naukowej. Druga część artykułu traktuje problem synonimii w ukraińskiej terminologii onomastycznej.

Polish medical terminology of the 19th century

Opis:
This paper characterises 18 synonyms of padaczka (epilepsy) certifi ed in 19thcentury texts. The source basis was the medical dictionaries of those days, titles of articles in medical press, selected medical guides and dictionaries including the Polish language (monolingual and multilingual; general and dialectal ones). This served as the basis for establishing the reach of the characterised synonyms in the 19th c., which was the time of intensive works on organising the Polish medical terminology. The analysis permitted the conclusion that padaczka and epilepsya were the two terms that were used most frequently and broadly (at all terminological levels of the language of the discussed century) at that time.

The article deals with the semantic paradigm of phraseological units that are used in Slavic languages. Paradigmatic relations in the sphere of phraseology are: phraseological units of synonymous and antonymic character, variance, polysemy, classification by semantic cohesion of components. Our attention is drawn to the peculiarities of the manifestation of synonymy and variance, since these phenomena did not find a systematic and comprehensive description in Belarusian linguistics in relation to the phraseological units of the Slavic languages. Different views on the definition of the term “phraseological synonyms” are analyzed. The structure of the synonymic series of phraseological units is determined, types of synonyms among the analyzed linguistic units are characterized (absolute, semantic, stylistic, semantic-stylistic). The criteria for the selection of a dominant unit – idiom, which leads a synonymous series of phraseological units are proposed. The grammatical structure of phraseological synonyms is considered and, accordingly, single-structure and similar-structural units are singled out and described. Certain regularities in the manifestation of variability in the sphere of phraseology are revealed. The peculiarities and the degree of distribution of eight types of phraseological variation are singled out and characterized: lexical, accentual, phonetic, accent-phonetic, word-forming, morphological, constructive-quantitative, combined.

Opis:
The article is devoted to the names of music stars in Russian youth slang. The number of English borrowings, which appear in the Russian youth’s language,  is growing rapidly.  Russian youngsters are open for western music. The paper presents the processes of implementation of English names into Russian slang. The studied material shows how English words are transformed to adjust to Russian phonetics. The author of this paper proves that young people do not copy foreign words and phrases, but treat them as a basis for further modifications. They play with foreign words in order to adjust them to Russian phonetics and add humour which is a characteristic feature of youth slang.

Opis:
W tradycji retorycznej i badawczej wyliczenie zyskało opinię figury możliwie neutralnej, oddającej chaotyczność świata, skupionej na szczególe. Z tego prawdopodobnie powodu wykorzystuje się je w tych utworach (zarówno fikcjonalnych, jak i niefikcjonalnych), których celem jest wywołanie wrażenia, że historia została ujęta obiektywnie, oraz wyrobienie w czytelniku zaufania do bezstronności narratora i wnikliwości opisu. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest weryfikacja tych założeń na przykładzie jednej odmiany enumeracji – zbiorów rzeczownikowych – na materiale polskiego reportażu XX i XXI w., a więc zbadanie, w jaki sposób forma wyliczenia (ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem zbiorów zbudowanych z nazw własnych, synonimów oraz pojęć abstrakcyjnych) jest związana z żywiołami porządku i chaosu, szczegółu czy ogółu, subiektywizmu czy obiektywizmu, a także które z nich stanowią w tych utworach (lub ich fragmentach) zasadę organizacyjną.
In the rhetorical tradition, enumeration has gained an opinion of a neutral figure which is focused on details and reflects the chaos of the world. For this reason, it is probably used in those works (both fictional and non-fictional) whose purpose is to create an impression that the story has been presented objectively and to build reader’s confidence in the narrator’s impartiality and insightful description. The aim of this study is to verify these assumptions following the example of one type of enumeration, i.e. noun sets, on the basis of the material of Polish literary journalism of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and thus to examine how the forms of these enumerations (with particular emphasis on the sets composed of proper names, synonyms and abstract concepts) are related to the elements of order and chaos, specific and general, subjectivity and objectivity, and which of them actually constitute the organizational principle in these works (or their fragments).

The quantity of biomedical publications is growing at an exponential rate. With such explosive growth of the content, it is more and more difficult to locate, retrieve and manage the resulting information. This is why text mining has become a necessity. The main goal of biomedical research is to put knowledge to practical use in the form of diagnoses, prevention, and treatment. It is important to pool the resources between the different individuals researching results. The objective of this paper is to discuss the variety of issues and challenges surrounding the perspectives regarding the use of Information Retrieval and Text Mining methods in biomedicine. The article will first look at the directions in biomedical TM and then describe the work done for the BIAM project, the French on-line Medical Data Base.

The article describes the structure of 940 medical terms (names of diseases) fromthe “Dictionary of Polish Medical Terminology” (Słownik terminologii lekarskiej polskiej)of 1881, that have been recognised as the most accurate, i.e. primary synonyms.From their analysis in the context of synonymic chains in which they occur, it was concludedthat the structure of a term recognised as ideal is of no great significance (in the case of 80% of terms) for the establishment of the term as the primary synonym. This isone of the reasons for which primary synonyms often have a structure identical to otherterms in its synonymic chain.
