Opis:
Podania i gawędy z Wybrzeża.
The article analyses the approach to Pomerania as a place of coexistence of cultural traditions of various nations and ethnic groups. In Kashubian literature, Pomerania is described as a culturally rich borderland area (in this case, Slavic-Germanic or Baltic-Slavic), and here too we can designate places, events and centres shaping the “neighbourly” image of these lands in the medium of Kashubian as well as Polish and German literature. Apart from strictly historical factors, some writers also created this space of the “crossroads of cultures” as a particularly important land, interestingdue to the Polish-Kashubian-German neighbourhood, Polish-Swedish wars, as well as the shared experience of fishing communities and the harshness of nature. Particularly important in this context is the work of the Kashubian writer Augustyn Necel, especially his novels written in Polish, such as Krwawy sztorm [Bloody Storm], Złote klucze [Golden Keys], Kutry o czerwonych żaglach [Cutters with Red Sails] or the collection W niewoli białych purtków: Podania i gawędy z Wybrzeża [In the Captivity of White Purtki: Tales and Stories from the Coast].

In this article, Krystyna Zabawa analyses Barbara Gawryluk’s novel for older children Czarna, Klifka i tajemnice z dna morza [Czarna, Klifka and the secrets from the seabed] from the perspective of the commentaries this novel makes on language issues and on aspects of interpersonal as well as interspecies communication. Zabawa identifies the ways in which the novel presents foreign languages (Swedish and English) and how it encourages young readers to learn them. Zabawa interprets Gawryluk’s novel a text about communication problems and about the conditions necessary for mutual understanding among people. She also analyses passages in the novel that address human-animal and animal-animal communication.

Opis:
This paper addresses a phenomenon of the international success of Swedish female writers in the 19th century. I have focused on the Polish translations of Marie Sophie Schwartz’s works, which became extremely popular in the 1860’s and 1870’s, judging from the number of books translated in comparison to other Swedish bestselling writers. One of the most important issues for Schwartz was emancipation, specifically women’s right to education, employment and econo-mic autonomy. Her novel Emancipation Frenzy was translated into Polish in 1865 and 1876. Both translations differ as to the accuracy in rendering the emancipa-tion message. The earlier translation tends to omit or soften the author’s radical opinions on emancipation, which flattens the novel’s progressive message. The later one is closer to the original and articulates emancipation claims more faithfully. This probably has to do with the fact that the Polish emancipation de-bate was already more developed in the 1870s. That seems to confirm a funda-mental thesis of Translations Studies that translation not only communicates the message of the source text but also comprises an inscription of the host culture’s current standards and needs. Thus, the novels by Schwartz were initially read as popular literature, and over time they were perceived as socially engaged literature (Tendenzroman), which corresponded to the Polish nationalistic program.

Opis:
Wawrzyniec Engeström (altern. Lars Benzelstierna von Engeström) was a 19th-century Polish aristocrat with Swedish roots, a historian, writer and political activist who made it his life's mission to build bridges between Polish and Swedish culture. The rapprochement he sought was based on anti-German and anti-Russian sentiments. In his poems A Song about Our Stars (Pieśń o gwiazdach naszych, 1874, 1883) and The Vistula: A National Fantasy (Wisła – Fantazja narodowa, 1883) he drew on Wincenty Pol's Songs of Our Land (Pieśni o ziemi naszej). They all celebrated the idea of national unity based on historical memory, religion and custom. His inspiration came from Swedish Romantic literature, whose main works he translated into Polish.

Opis:
The text shows the picture of nineteenth-century Stockholm saturated with negative content, revealing a large city as a space of deadness, chimerical vitalism, and unconditional dissolution as a result of crisis of values. Symptomatic for the nineteenth-century European social changes made the literary city a reflection of this process by showing the urban monstrosity of that destructive energy, its unfriendliness and controversy. This case is similar. The novelistic city shows multidimensional loneliness of man of that time. This image maps the entity which is not able to save its subjectivity, to find the formula, the man who from the heights of his own selfishness precipitates his identity into the abyss of all progression. It also shows the doom of rudimentary value, flattening of anthropocentric dimension of existence in favour of the eruption of animalistic instincts, impulses and consumerism. The characters in Hjalmar Söderberg’s novel – Martin, Arvid, Gabriel or Tomas – circulate in this space, wander, chase, roam the empty area looking for values. The characters being in chronic pointless movement automatically include themselves in an insensitive stream of street momentum, as they were passively involved in this whole theatre of gestures. Stockholm is a symbol of the inertial city, neutral existentially, it is a braid of illusions, fantasies, afterimages. The city is a zone of axiological deadness, damages. A sad face of the city chronically becomes a grimace of everything that is wrong, hardening into the “damage”, closure. It is an unusual character of this prose.

Opis:
The article is a presentation of partial research on litanic verse in Swedish literature carried out within the project “Litanic Verse in the Culture of European Regions”. Starting from the origins of the litanic genre, described by Witold Sadowski, the author analyses Karin Boye’s poem ”Bön till solen” („Prayer to the Sun”), paying special attention to the presence of the three litanic genes: the ektenial, the polyonymic and the chairetismic. As the typical stylistic figures and structural solutions occur in the poem, a conclusion can be drawn that ”Bön till solen” is an example of preservation of litanic patterns in the Swedish literary tradition.

Opis:
The paper elucidates a work of Early Modern Swedish literature, entitled Polska Kongars Saga och Skald [Saga and Song of Polish Kings] and published anonymously at the royal printing house in Stockholm in 1736. This book is remarkable in several respects. In 51 chapters it portrays the rulers of Poland, from the legendary founder of the nation, Lech I, up to Stanisław Leszczyński, still in power in early 1736. The chapters are composed in a similar way, each of them containing an engraving of the monarch, a historical sketch in prose, and a concluding comment in verse. The paper starts off by discussing the attribution of Polska Kongars Saga och Skald, an issue on which Swedish and Polish scholars have held divergent views. The dispute is settled here by identifying the author as the Stockholm clergyman and occasional poet Johan Göstaf Hallman (1701–1757). The main focus of the paper, however, is an investigation of the work’s verse comments. It is argued that the delineation of Poland’s sovereigns is used primarily as a stock of exempla, being explained in terms of virtues and vices in the poems closing the individual chapters. In particular, the chapters on the medieval rulers Bolesław V (Bolesław Wstydliwy) and Ludwik I (Ludwik Węgierski) are scrutinized. As moralizing comments on the historical events, these chapters employ verse fables by Jean de La Fontaine, rendered in Swedish. With his faithful verse translations of “Le Loup & l’Agneau” and “L’oeil du Maître”, Hallman enriches the initial phase of La Fontaine reception in Sweden, which took place, it is shown, several decades after the earliest reception of Fables choisies, mises en vers in Polish. Of even greater significance, though, is the fact that the two French fables, both of them highly aestheticized according to the taste of Classicism, in the context of Poland’s history are given a clearly moral-didactic function by the Swedish clergyman. Hallman thereby inverts the most groundbreaking contribution of La Fontaine to European fable history.

Opis:
The paper examines genre strategies in a number of children’s books by the well-known Swedish author, Astrid Lindgren. Drawing on the reception theories of Hans Robert Jauss, Aidan Chambers and Reinbert Tabbert, the paper demonstrates that the stormy reception of Pippi Longstocking (1945), prompted by a review by Professor John Landquist, had principally genre-related grounds. The book made readers feel a sense of provocation because it challenged their archetextual horizon of expectations by evoking certain traditional genres and simultaneously twisting them in almost anarchic ways. In later books Astrid Lindgren makes a more elaborate use of classic genre structures. She generally chooses one well-known archetext as the generic dominant and allows it to interact with a set of other genres, thus calling forth the main aesthetic effect of the book from the archetextual dialogue between the dominant and the accompanying genres. The paper specifically investigates this polyphonic method in three of Lindgren’s most popular books. In All about the Bullerby children (1947–52) the generic dominant is idyll and the subordinated archetexts satire, parody, burlesque, farce, fairy tale and ballad. Mio, my son (1954) can be considered as an artistic fairy tale (Kunstmärchen), this dominant genre correlating with some other interwoven archetexts: apocryphal gospel, myth, legend, heroic tale and idyll. Finally, the generic dominant of Ronia, the robber’s daughter (1981) – a novel about the adventures of a band of robbers (Räuberroman) – finds its archetextual counterparts in folktale, popular legend, myth, burlesque, fantasy and Bildungsroman, among others.

Opis:
In this paper I investigate the narrative techniques in short stories by Stig Dagerman, one of the leading Swedish writers of the 1940s. I focus on the auctorial narrative situation, in which the narrator exposes his presence in the literary text, taking a position between fiction and reality outside the literature. My observation is that this phenomenon is characteristic for Dagerman’s short stories and that it can be further examined through the perspective of skaz, the oral form of narration. In the first part of my article I briefly discuss different concepts of skaz presented by different scholars, e.g., Eikhenbaum, Vinogradov and Bakhtin, and I point out their limitations. In my analysis I use Titunik’s model of skaz, which makes it possible for me to describe this narrative device in the most complex way with different kinds of determinants, namely grammatical, situative, expressive, allocutive, dialectical and semantic ones. In the second part of my article I show how these determinants manifest themselves in Dagerman’s short stories. The third section of the article includes my conclusions from the analysis. Dagerman uses the technique of skaz in his short stories frequently and intentionally, both in homodiegetic and in the heterodiegetic narration. He applies all determinants of skaz from Titunik’s model, a number of different ones at the same time. He uses dialectical determinants of skaz at the lowest pitch, he rather concentrates on expressive and allocutive ones. The narrator does not only mark his position in the literary text, but he also draws the attention to the presence of the narratee. In this way the very act of communication is stressed in Dagerman’s short stories. The analysis of skaz can therefore make an interesting contribution to the studies of communication strategies in Dagerman’s short stories.
