Opis:
Titanium alloys are increasingly being used in manufacturing especially in aerospace industries. The environmental impact of using this material is rarely discussed especially with regards to energy consumption and its contribution to carbon emissions. The poor machinability of titanium leads to lower material removal rate and longer machining time. Coupled with high carbon footprints encountered, in extracting this material from ore, it is clear that the environmental impact of using this material needs to be optimised. In the research reported here, cutting tests were undertaken on a lathe and milling machine using unified cutting conditions. The associated energy and carbon footprints were analysed and discussed with emphasis on high speed machining. The paper clearly shows the impact of process choice and cutting speed on environmental footprints as a key performance measure in sustainable manufacturing.

Sustainable manufacturing is to ensure that cost-effective manufacturing processes do not endanger the environment, are implemented in a way that is safe for life and health of employees and the public. The question then arises of how to improve manufacturing processes to make them more sustainable? Such a question cannot be answered unequivocally. The author draws attention to the possibility of using for that purpose FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) method, which aims to identify potential defects in the process/product and then eliminate them or minimize the risks associated with them. In the article it will be proposed modification of this method for using it in the process of sustainable manufacturing.

Purpose: The EU’s guidelines exert an important influence on companies aiming to accelerate the implementation of green measures and minimise their negative environmental impacts. The objective of this paper is to define the key categories of green organisations and green competences whose development can accelerate the implementation of green processes in companies. Design/methodology/approach: Based on the literature review, a semi-structured qualitative research questionnaire was developed and a pilot study was conducted on four large manufacturing companies. Findings: A list of categories of activities linked to green organisations was developed and key components of green competences were defined. It was shown that performance-related managerial competences are the most important components of green competences for the companies. It was also pointed out that the categories that are the components of green 19 organisations are important and that the degree to which they are met has been increasing over time in recent years. Research limitations/implications: The pilot study was conducted with middle and senior 22 level representatives of four manufacturing companies. Its conclusions will be used to continue the research with a larger sample. Practical implications: The results of the study will allow companies to better adapt to the challenges of sustainability and green organisations. Key green competences and an emphasis on their development in the companies will allow more green organisation areas to be achieved more quickly. Social implications: The development of green organisations has a direct influence on minimising the negative environmental impacts and thereby improving the quality of life for everyone in society. Originality/value: Based on the analysis of the literature, it can be stated that there is no clear definition of green organisations while the variety of measures and their nomenclature in the area of sustainability is extensive. Research in that area contributes to the development of the science of management and quality and represents an important new field of research. This paper is meant for researchers and practitioners as well as HR representatives who work with the issue of green competences and green organisations.

Evaluation o f programs initiated by manufacturing firms that are geared toward sustainability is worthy o f attention in research due to the current global demands o f addressing not just economic growth bu t environmental and social burdens. This paper a ttempts to provide a comprehensive evaluation framework using the hierarchical structure o f sustainable manufacturing (SM) indicators set developed by the US National Institute o f Standards and Technology (US NIST) and a multi-criteria decisionmaking (MCDM) approach, the analytic network process (ANP). ANP is deemed appropriate, aside from the multi-criteria nature o f the problem, because o f the presence o f subjective components that are interrelating in complex relationships. A real case study is carried out in a semiconductor manufacturing firm in the Philippines in the evaluation o f its programs toward sustainability. The results show that the creation and implementation o f cleaner production technologies are considered the most relevant programs. Purpose – The article aims to assess the impact of contemporary external socio-economic deter-minants, including globalization, eco-innovation, social development, and macroeconomic stabilization, on the sustainable development of manufacturing enterprises in Poland and Germany from 2008 to 2020. Research method – This paper is empirical. The survey covers the manufacturing enterprises in Poland and Germany. The first part discusses the conceptual background related to the sustainable deve-lopment of enterprises in a socio-economic context. The empirical part includes the methodology and results of the study. To determine the relationship between socio-economic factors and sustainable development, the author uses the Least Square Method (OLS) and Seemingly Unrelated Regression (SUR). Results – The research results show a statistically significant relationship between the variables. Socio-economic indicators are vital determinants of the sustainable development of manufacturing enter-prises. The models show that the impact of individual exogenous determinants is different in Poland and Germany. Originality/value/implications/recommendations – The statistical assessment of the socio-economic impact on enterprises’ sustainable development is relatively poorly understood. The issue is new, contem-porary and requires further analysis. The exogenous socio-economic factors are important for enter-prises sustainable development. It is important to launch macroeconomic efforts to implement sustain-able development goals. The results show a different impact of socio-economic indicators on the sustainable development of manufacturing enterprises, which may indicate that the enterprise develop-ment depends on many factors that are different in analysed countries.

Opis:
A multi-floor manufacturing in residential districts of huge city promotes decongestion of urban traffic and satisfy the population’s demand for essential goods. City manufacturing and its supply chain entail several challenges related to the sustainable development of a large agglomeration. Environmental problems impose significant constraints on such manufacturing activities and production waste in the urban environment poses a real problem that needs to be addressed by special research. This paper discusses integrated sustainable production waste management for a city multi-floor manufacturing cluster, consisting of a group of production buildings and a supporting logistics node. In line with the theory of integrated sustainable waste management, three key components are addressed: waste management stakeholders, components of the waste management system, and the technical, environmental and legal aspects of a city multi-floor manufacturing cluster. The goal of the paper is to develop a concept for a model of environmental sustainable waste management in a city multi-floor manufacturing cluster, aimed at ensuring the system safety: human - technical facility - environment. This model can serve as a basis for the development of appropriate logistics chains for production waste management considering their hazardousness indicator. The versatility of the model will allow it to be widely used, and when its stages and working principles are embedded in the practice of city multi-floor manufacturing, proper control over the waste management process can be achieved. The application of the proposed model of integrated sustainable production waste management in the practice of the city multi-floor manufacturing clusters will contribute to the environmental sustainability of its operation.

Manufacturing techniques are concerned with quality, cost, productivity and sustainability. With today's environmental awareness and the pressure of the sustainability requirements, existing manufacturing techniques of heating devices are evolving into the redesign manufacturing unit processes to increase overall sustainability. Also, these techniques need a measurement method to assess processes-related sustainability performance indicators. The purpose of this paper is to stress the role of manufacturing techniques: welding, cleaning and painting in the manufacture of heating appliances (solid fuel fired boilers used renewable energy sources) in terms of incorporating into the field the concept of sustainable development. It then focuses on the environmental, technical, economical and social impact of sustainable technologies and argues for the need to ensure that the concept is being applied to the manufacture of heating devices. In this paper, author tries to propose a unified, standard scientific factory-level methodology to evaluate the influence of manufacturing techniques on the sustainability of enterprises producing heating devices. The proposed methodology in the terms of the case study is a comprehensive answer to the question of to what extent the improvements in those techniques influence the sustainable development of the enterprises. An industrial case study demonstrates that the proposed improvements can effectively influence the sustainability of enterprise. The results of this assessment can be applied to broad industry sectors, and can lead to the accepted measures and practices.

The study is devoted to the co-design concept which is not widely studied in the manufacturing industry area. The concept is just practiced but not theorized and not investigated enough, although it greatly deserves it because of its perspectives and advantages potential in the technology changes era. This study aims to present an investigation of literature views on co-design in manufacturing operations, with the comparison to service literature where it is widely discussed; the study also aims at in-depth investigations of co-design occurrences in two industrial cases of product development to understand their nature and circumstances. In addition, the influence of Industry 4.0 technologies and their coexistence with the concept of sustainability will also be strongly taken into consideration in the empirical part of this study. The process of the individualized production of the industrial line for animal food packing and cardboard packaging production has been studied according to case study methodology. The study demonstrates that co-design could contribute to bettering the process of new product development and achieving products more accurate for the final users’ requirements. It goes hand in hand with one of the core ideas of sustainability, which is to have long-lasting products, exploited by the customer with a high level of satisfaction for a longer time. The study implies that the technologies of Industry 4.0 could support wider and more effective co-design exploitation by manufacturing entities.

Today’s concern and problem for most of the companies is the way of surviving and prospering in current and future periods of time in the marketplace. Sustainable competitive ability can be one of the ways of adaptation to the global business and rapid environment requirements. Operational competitiveness is not easy to be sustainably improved because of unpredictable environment situations, such as continuous increasing customer needs, global competitive environment, rapid and unpredictable changes in government policy, company crisis during significant changes etc. However, it is possible to make adaptive adjustments on operations strategy level in dynamic business environment and to become competitive enough compared to the competitors. The purpose of this paper is to define and assess sustainable competitive advantage and the direction of development in housing business. It can be analysed by two core factors, i.e. Sense and Respond (S&R) methodology, Analytical Hierarchical Process (AHP) as well as Sustainable competitive advantage (SCA) method. This study also focuses on applying S&R method in order to optimize operational competitiveness as well as defining the competitive priorities of the case company. The analysis results show the critical areas in different departments of the case company, which can help the managers to make quick decisions. In addition, they reveal that during the crisis the resource allocation is continuously changing and therefore the operation strategy of the case company is not well defined as well as competitive advantages are not enough sustainable.

The improvement of energy efficiency is one of the main areas of activity in the context of implementing the principle of sustainable development. This need stems from the ongoing environmental and social changes and conditions in the form of limited energy resources and the need to adapt to climate change. The EU undertakes a number of initiatives promoting actions aimed at reducing the energy intensity of the economy. Key solutions are included in the energy and climate package adopted in 2008 and Directive 2012/27/EU, which obliges EU Member States to establish a system to support energy efficiency. Considering these formal requirements, the aim of the article is to diagnose the degree of progress in implementing the assumptions of the energy and climate package in Poland and to present the results of the analysis in the field of the energy efficiency of the Polish industrial sector. The main problem of the study is to indicate trends in the studied phenomenon in the manufacturing, which in 2016 was responsible for 22.6% of final energy consumption. The study uses an analytical and descriptive method. The concept of sustainable development was characterised based on a review of the literature and source documents. The research on the progress in the implementation of the energy and climate package was based on a taxonomic measure using the Hellwig’s multidimensional comparative analysis method, while the ODEX index was used to assess the energy efficiency of the industrial sector. The study covered the years 2005–2016. The conducted research indicates that the Polish economy should fulfil the objective of the energy and climate package in the field of energy efficiency improvement, and manufacturing is the sector in which changes in this area are the fastest.
Poprawa efektywności energetycznej jest jednym z głównych obszarów działań w kontekście realizacji zasady zrównoważonego rozwoju. Potrzeba ta wynika z zachodzących zmian środowiskowych i społecznych oraz ograniczonych zasobów energetycznych i konieczności adaptacji do zmian klimatycznych. UE podejmuje wiele inicjatyw promujących działania zmierzające do redukcji intensywności energetycznej gospodarki. Badanie postępów we wdrażaniu pakietu energetyczno-klimatycznego przeprowadzono z wykorzystaniem wielowymiarowej analizy porównawczej z zastosowaniem taksonomicznej miary rozwoju Hellwiga, natomiast do oceny efektywności energetycznej sektora przemysłowego wykorzystano indeks ODEX.

Opis:
The objective of this study is to analyze a Finnish manufacturing case company’s operational competitiveness. A proposed analytical model based on analyses the corresponding angles of the strategic triangles (Prospector, Analyzer, and Defender). The model compares the angle differences between the strategy and resource triangles with opinions from different management groups of informants. It was found out that Normalized Scaled Critical Factor Index (NSCFI) model is more scientific comparing to formal ones through validation. Calculations based on the MSI questionnaire resulted in medium high values for the Prospector strategy both for past- and future orientation. S&R calculations regarding the past orientation resulted in low values for all strategy types, except P-NSCFI for Analyzer. Moreover this study covers a case, in where Balanced Critical Factor Index (BCFI) was used defining company annual strategy plan.

Opis:
Purpose: This paper aims to present a fresh idea on how to model and examine the level of sustainable competitive advantage (SCA) with and without knowledge and /technology (K/T) effects in a case company’s operation by taking the manufacturing strategy’s development directions and the efficiency of resource allocation among its attributes into consideration. Design/Methodology/approach: In this paper, questionnaires are filled by two different managerial groups, company’s management team (G1) and company’s global directors (G2). The analyses based on G1, G2 and G1-G2 (mixed results) are performed and examined as well as the effect of knowledge and /technology rankings to observe the differences on how they effect on company’s operations strategy and what kind of strategy type that decision makers might follow. Besides, the effects of knowledge/technology rankings on SCA risk levels are examined on different case companies to perceive the similarities and differences with our case company. In this case study, the objectives are achieved based on several methodologies: manufacturing strategy index (MSI) [1] and sense and respond (S&R) methodology [2]. Findings: The achieved results through the model are found to be promising corresponding to the feedback from the respondents. Research limitations/implications: The model is applied only in a big sized B2B global company that produces power electronics products. Therefore, further tests need to be applied to the model in case of multiple companies from different sizes and areas to figure out the best formula in case of validation of strategic direction (MAPE, RSME or MAD). Practical implications: As a result of its wide applicability and its ease in arrangement the model has an enormous potential for strategic decision-making process and strategic analysis. Originality/Value:The model can provide a more dependable possibility of sustainable improvement to the corporate operational excellence and strategy.
