Opis:
Transport is generally an instrument for globalization. It is not possible to use transport as an instrument for de-globalization. For compensating the negative effects of globalization on regional and local markets, a world-wide sustainable development process is to be started. This is an idea propagated by United Nations since the publishing of the Brundtland-Report. Sustainability has three components: the social, the ecological and the economic sustainability. Economic sustainability is realized when the (transport) enterprises make no profits and setting the prices is following a price-wage-rule. This rule postulates that the price and wage have to be equal. However, transport can also set incentives for social and ecological sustainability. Transport is no instrument for de-globalization, but an important instrument for compensating the negative effects of globalization. The measures which transport policy has to realize sustainability are not new, but we need to a new world-wide concept for transport policy. We have to accept, that the world is one economic area and not more than two hundred areas. We need only one set of economic rules and not over hundred different sets of rules.

Opis:
Companies are increasingly implementing sustainable solutions as they face a growing sustainability demands from different stakeholders. The question is whether car manufacturers adhered to sustainable production principles and at what level they are doing it in practice. The Lowell Center for Sustainable Production (LCSP) is used as a model to analyse the main aspects of sustainable production and assess the companies in the automotive sector in European Union. The data was collected from the Corporate Social Responsibility/ Sustainability reports of the individual car manufacturers found in the online data base of Global Reporting Initiative. Empirical evidence shows the adherence of these companies to the LCSP sustainable production principles. All the studied companies seem to be conscious of the significance of sustainability for the automotive industry. Although most of the sustainable production practices are focused on the environmental dimension of sustainability, employee and social aspects are not ignored in the reports.

Aim: This paper aims at reviewing existing theoretical frameworks in sustainability competencies and identifying suitable evaluation strategies and instruments. Design / Research methods: To gain a comprehensive view of the evaluation and assessment processes of sustainability competencies a systematic literature review was conducted using a set of keywords. After a refining phase and selection of articles centred in evaluation processes a final sample of 43 articles was analysed.   Conclusions / findings: Little evidence exists on the development, outcomes and impact that courses introducing students to sustainability competencies have. Further empirical research is needed on the development and implementation of assessment tools for sustainability competencies. Originality / value of the article: this paper outlines the state of the art of evaluation and assessment tools for sustainability competencies in higher education and suggests pathways for further research and practice based on a literature review.

Opis:
This papers aim is to focus on the specifications of the intermodal services in Slovakia (partly also in the Czech Republic and Austria) as representative of Central Europe as well as on the existing and potential clients of intermodal transport through the region of Southeast Europe. The analysed market has enough potential to offer intermodal services. Currently, the competitive situation compared to road transport is very unsatisfactory. Yet, it is hardly possible to realize a good revenue situation with intermodal transports. Nevertheless, the paper identifies three areas in question where potential was analysed by doing literature researches as well as using expert opinions. New intermodal services from the Adriatic port to Slovakia as well as between between Central Europe (Slovakia) and the southern CIS counties, e.g. Russia have been identified. In addition, new intermodal services into the direction of Romania and respectively Turkey show enough potential to establish several strategies to enhance the transport level within the whole corridor. Especially Turkey is characterized as "chance" for the area in question.

Opis:
Preparing a sustainability report becomes more and more popular among a wide range of branches including shipping and seaports. For majority of Polish ports preparing a formal CSR strategy is a new challenge. The aim of this article was to compare the way that selected European seaports chose to report and identify the most important topics of their sustainable activity. In order to answer the research questions the multi-case study of selected European ports was prepared. The strategy and identified topics at seaports that have prepared sustainability reports can be used in benchmarking process. Such a comparison can help Polish seaports avoid mistakes in preparing such reports by themselves in the future. The analysis showed that the most important sustainability topics are connected with employment and air emission. There were also themes specific for seaports activity like maintaining the water depths. Involvement the port stakeholders in prioritization process made the topics order suited all parties concerned in port operations.

Modele/różnice w zakresie poziomów wskaźnika zrównoważonego rozwoju wśród różnych krajów określone na podstawie próby obejmującej 132 państw zostały poddane analizie porównawczej na pod-stawie łatwo dostępnych danych wtórnych. Wreszcie struktura fraktalna posłużyła do przeprowadzenia końco-wych obserwacji i omówienia wyników poszczególnych krajów w zakresie oznak zrównoważonego rozwoju w postaci zrównoważenia społecznego, technologicznego i środowiskowego.
The paper propose an empirical definition of sustainable development, which is used for detailed conceptualiza-tion and operationalization into an index for comparing national polities. Patterns/gaps of sustainable develop-ment index performance among national polities using a sample of 132 countries are explored comparatively based on readily available secondary data. Finally, the fractal-based framework is used to make concluding ob-servations and discussions regarding national polities performance on sustainable development as an index of social sustainability, technological sustainability and environmental sustainability indications.

Opis:
Research background: Health and environmental concerns linked to food production and consumption have become crucial both for policy makers and for consumers for modern society. Some consumers are becoming increasingly careful about what they eat, giving value to the impacts of everyday food choices on their health and on the environment. There have been few studies that have jointly analyzed these consumption patterns and that have looked for their association. Purpose of the article: The objective of the study is to develop a Polish (PL) and Czech (Cz) young-adult consumers' segmentation based on health and environ-mental attitudes and values in food choices. The research is needed to diagnose consumption trends in this segment of the market to enable creating a market offer tailored to this group of consumers. Methods: A total of 631 students from two Universities - one in Poland (University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn (323)) and on in the Czech Republic (University of South Bohemia (308)) were selected to participate in the research. The sample of students was chosen because of the importance of young-adult consumers as the participants of the market with a specified purchasing potential. The data were collected through a survey questionnaire, in which a Likert type scale was used to determine the health and environmental attitudes and values in food choices. The results obtained were analyzed statistically using Statistica 13.1 using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) with Varimax rotation, cluster analysis using the k-means method and ANOVA. Findings & Value added: The survey demonstrated that the students presented both health and environmental attitudes, and that their food choices were driven to a lesser extent by the environmental than by the health-related values. Results demonstrated that the two distinguished factors significantly differentiated both the Polish and the Czech students into two clusters, with the first cluster being represented by consumers presenting stronger health and environmental attitudes (PL N=58%, Cz N=48%) compared to the students from the second cluster. It adds value to recent young consumers' behavior knowledge by jointly analyzing their attitudes toward health and environmental values in food choices. These findings may be useful in developing effective educational and marketing campaigns and understanding the demand for certain products.

Opis:
According to the economics of welfare the need (or necessity) for state intervention starts when people experience market failures [Pigou, 1920], the goal and reason for state intervention is usually to develop the welfare of people. Studies of actual state interventions show that not only the market but state interventions can fail as well [Wolf, 1988]. The rehabilitation and revitalization of the unused industrial sites represent new development possibilities and a serious challenge to public policies. The question is how to minimize the cost of industrial changes, when industry has lost its function in some areas and it had a negative effect on people. In my study I will try to show the value of the effect and success of these policies without which economic growth is impossible, and which make brown field investments sustainable. In my opinion rehabilitation requires an interdisciplinary approach and one need to pay special attention to the rule of the local and country governance, and the ways of redistribution and financial support both from the European Union and the national state. For long term sustainability it is essential to avert the environmental damage, but without any government help it will not be successful and sustainable.
