Doświadczenie bólu i cierpienia stanowi sytuację graniczną w życiu człowieka. Dla wierzących, jak i niewierzących jest ono głębokim wstrząsem, mającym swoje skutki zarówno w życiu osobistym poszczególnych ludzi, jak też w ich relacjach do drugich. Dla osób wierzących doświadczenie cierpienia stanowi próbę nadziei i ufności do Boga. Przyjęcie właściwej postawy wobec cierpienia pozwala człowiekowi przewartościować je i znaleźć odpowiedź na najbardziej fundamentalne pytania, które zostają wywołane przez cierpienie. Źródłem nadziei i ufności dla chrześcijan jest zmartwychwstały Chrystus, który przyjmując cierpienie, dzięki miłości nadał mu wartość odkupieńczą. Cierpienie przeżywane z Chrystusem ubogaca człowieka i pozwala mu upodobnić się do Jednorodzonego Syna Bożego.
Experience of pain and suffering is a border situation in one’s life. Both for the believers and for the unbelievers it is a deep shock, which has its consequences in the life of a particular person as well as in their relationships with others. For the people who believe experience of suffering can become a trial of hope and trust in God. Adopting the right stance facing suffering allows the person to revalue its meaning and additionally to find the answers for the most fundamental questions which suffering raise. The source of hope and trust for Christians is the risen Christ, who accepting suffering through love, added redeeming value to it. Suffering lived with Christ enriches a human being and allows him / her to mirror the only begotten Son of God.

Der Verfasser behandelt das Problem des Leidens in der Apokryphenliteratur des AT. Er bemerkt, daß in der henochitischen Tradition, die in solchen apokryphen Büchern wie dem Buch Henoch, dem Jubiläenbuch und der Apokalypse Abrahams enthalten ist, die diesbezüglichen Ansichten der damaligen Autoren zwischen zwei Polen oszillieren. Einerseits ist das dem Menschen begegnende Böse eine Wirkung von Kräften, die stärker sind als der Mensch (Dämonen), andererseits wird darauf verwiesen, daß das Schicksal des Menschen vor allem von ihm selbst abhängt: von seiner Treue zum Gesetz und zu dem mit Gott geschlossenen Bund.

Opis:
Suffering, in its broad sense, is present in every person’s life. Suffering accompanies each individual human being at every degree of longitude and latitude and it can, therefore, be considered a universal theme. Suffering coexists with man, and thus it belongs to those areas of human activity and reflection that are constantly undertaken anew. Even though suffering can be discerned in the animal world, the concept of “suffering” seems to affect man in a particular way, and it is an inherent part of human existence. Suffering may reveal to man his own depth and layers of his personality, which he might otherwise often remain unaware of. Human earthly life begins and is fulfilled between immanence and transcendence. For a believer, suffering belongs to the latter. Suffering may reveal itself in many different forms and degrees of intensity. In spite of many attempts to seek an answer to the question “why”, suffering still remains the great mystery. Therefore, a suffering man should always evoke in us the feeling of compassion and respect. As far as possible one should offer him help, comfort and hope. The process of education should sensitize young people to the presence of suffering both in their life as well as in that of others around them.
Cierpienie jest obecne w życiu każdego człowieka. Towarzyszy ono osobie pod każdym stopniem długości i szerokości geograficznej. Jest to temat ogólny ludzki. Problem ten współistnieje z człowiekiem. Dlatego należy do obszarów aktywności i refleksji człowieka, które są ciągle i na nowo podejmowane. Chociaż zauważamy cierpienie w świecie zwierząt, to jednak dotyka ono szczególnie człowieka. Doświadczenie cierpienia często odsłania człowiekowi jego głębię i bogate pokłady jego człowieczeństwa. Bez niego człowiek nie zdawałby sobie sprawy o ich istnieniu. Nasze życie ziemskie realizuje się pomiędzy immanencją i transcendencją. Dla człowieka wierzącego cierpienie przynależy do transcendencji. Rzeczywistość cierpienia przybiera liczne i różne postacie. Pomimo wielu prób poszukiwania odpowiedzi na pytanie „dlaczego”, cierpienie nadal pozostaje wielką tajemnicą. Dlatego człowiek cierpiący zawsze powinien budzić nasz szacunek i współczucie. W miarę możliwości należy nieść mu pomoc, otuchę i nadzieję. W procesie wychowania należy uwrażliwiać młodego człowieka na obecność cierpienia w jego życiu i życiu innych.

Amidst the many topics important for the shaping of character of adolescents in Original Stories, Mary Wollstonecraft places such important issues as our attitude towards animals. She wants to convince the readers that not only should we not hurt animals but also offer them our aid. The education that sensitises us to the fate of animals is an important element of moral education. Being kind for the beings of other species is what makes us better, more compassionate. And reversely being cruel towards animals turns us into brutes capable of hurting also people. Tormenting animals is moreover inconsistent with God’s will and leads to the infliction of completely unnecessary and senseless suffering. Which is why it deserves severe condemnation.

The main aim of this work is to highlight the problem of the nature and meaning of suffering related to cancer. The purpose of the interviews that we carried out was to learn the patterns of grieving that follows the death of someone close. Study was conducted in the group of 41 people at the time of mourning and bereavement after the loss of the loved ones due to a malignant cancer. Interviews with grieving persons were conducted from December 2008 to January 2010. The obtained results confirm that the problem of suffering related to patients in advanced stages of cancer is multidimensional. This problem needs to be solved by an interdisciplinary hospice palliative care.
Istotnym celem niniejszej pracy jest zwrócenie uwagi na problem istoty i sensu cierpienia w chorobie nowotworowej. Celem przeprowadzanych swobodnych wywiadów było poznanie jakie typy postaw względem problemu cierpienia w chorobie nowotworowej prezentują osoby osierocone i pozostające w żałobie. Badania obejmowały grupę 41 osób znajdujących się w okresie żałoby i osierocenia po stracie bliskich, których przyczyną śmierci była złośliwa forma choroby nowotworowej. Wywiady z osieroconymi przeprowadzano od grudnia 2008 do stycznia 2010. Uzyskane wyniki badań potwierdzają, że problem cierpienia chorego w zaawansowanym stadium choroby nowotworowej posiada wieloaspektowy wymiar. Problem ten wymaga rozwiązania przez interdyscyplinarną opiekę paliatywno-hospicyjną.

W artykule przedstawiono poglądy trzech myślicieli rosyjskich (Mikołaja Bierdiajewa, Iwana Iljina i Mikołaja Fiodorowa) odnoszące się do problematyki bólu i cierpienia, Wyakcentowano odmienność stworzonych przez nich koncepcji od myśli zachodniej. Podkreślono religijny charakter ich rozważań oraz maksymalistyczne i przeżyciowe traktowanie przez nich doświadczeń bólu i cierpienia. Zwrócono uwagę na sposób pojmowania przez nich tych fenomenów, odnoszenia się do nich i przezwyciężania ich przez Boga i człowieka.
The article is a presentation of the views of three Russian thinkers (Nikolai Alexandrovich Berdyaev, Ivan Alexandrovich Ilyin, and Nikolai Fyodorovich Fyodorov) on the problems of pain and suffering. The differences between their conceptions and those characteristic of Western philosophy and theology have been accentuated and the religious nature of their thinking, as well as their maximalist and lived-through approach to pain and suffering, have been emphasized. Their understanding of the phenomena in question has been discussed with a view to the way pain and suffering may be overcome by, respectively, God and by man. Translated by Dorota Chabrajska

In the book Regarding the Pain of Others Susan Sontag tackles the problem of war photography as a mean of mobilization of anti-war opposition. She mentions also the tradition of pictorial representations of ‘disasters of war’ as well as the western ‘iconography of suffering’. In her erudite essay, Sontag chose to omit German ‘Bildhistoriker’, Aby Warburg (1886-1929). Warburg’s concept of genesis of images from the spirit of suffering and his contribution to the study of visual aspects of war are the subjects of the present essay.

The article analyses the mode of establishing and recording the process of poetry valuation in Zarys literatury polskiej z ostatnich lat szesnastu [An outline of the literature of the last sixteen years] written by Piotr Chmielowski, as well as the textual strategies of the author that modeled the transformations in the discourse of the author. It is proved in the article that in the Chmielowski’s disquisitions the problem of evaluation is just as important as the evaluation as a problem. The evaluation of poetry conducted by the critic was an element of self-identification of the generation of ”young poets” that he himself represented, as well as a proof for their longing for grand poetry, discomfort resulting from lack of authority figures and difficulties in expressing one’s own or/and national suffering. The use of the so-called ”argument of poetry” has been recognized here as a distinctive feature of Chmielowski’s idiolect that serves to dynamize his critical writings.

The existential story of Edith Stein is characterized by the pursuit of truth and by placing herself at its service. Alexa Hennig von Lange z wielką wirtuozerią nakreśla złożoność problemów trapiących młode pokolenie. Twórczość autorki, zwłaszcza utwór Woher ich komme, traktuje o lękach egzystencjalnych młodzieży. W tej powieści Hennig von Lange ukazuje doniosłą rolę dzieciństwa. Autorka przedstawia żal głównej bohaterki za utraconym dzieciństwem, nawiązując do twórczości Pablo Nerudy. Utwór nawiązuje explicite do egzystencjalizmu, gdyż ukazuje cierpienie i śmierć. Bohaterka będąc jeszcze dzieckiem była świadkiem śmierci brata i matki. Utwór ujawnia znaczenie przeszłości, zwłaszcza dzieciństwa, w dorosłym życiu. Pokazuje jak tragedia z dzieciństwa przyczynia się do anoreksji dziewczyny i ma ścisły związek z jej lękami egzystencjalnymi.
Alexa Hennig von Lange masterly depicts the complexity of the problems that afflict the young generation. Her works, particularly Woher ich komme, deal with the existential fears of the youth. In this novel, Hennig von Lange depicts the profound significance of childhood. The text represents the grief of the protagonist after her lost childhood, refering to the works of Pablo Neruda. Woher ich komme explicitly refers to the existentialism as it portrays suffering and death. The main figure has seen the death of her brother and mother, drowning in the sea. The text highlights the significance of the past, particularly of childhood, as it shows how this tragedy could have caused anorexia and existential fears of the protagonist.
