Text function of multi-leveled language means expressing the modal meaning of possibility as one of the explicators of the author’s modality in Leo Tolstoy’s novel Anna Karenina is considered in the article.The authors determine functional specificity of the given means in revealing the valuable aspects of the heroes of the novel Anna Karenina, ruining the main heroine and influencing severely the people close to her: children, husband and Vronsky. The article traces the role of the modal means in showing the dynamics of formation and spiritual negative transformation of vital views of the heroine contrasting to the „family ideas” of the author of the novel and accepted by his readers.

W artykule próbowano zestawić analizę kerygmatyczną, jaką posługiwał się Marian Maciejewski, z badaniami nad relacją religii i literatury, którą stosowano dotąd w badaniach literaturoznawczych. KUL-owska szkoła, do której odwoływał się Badacz, reprezentowana przez naukowców tej miary, co Czesław Zgorzelski, Irena Sławińska, Maria Jasińska-Wojtkowska, Stefan Sawicki, wniosła bardzo ważny wkład w wypracowanie metodologii badań sacrum w literaturze. Na tym tle propozycja Maciejewskiego idzie dalej, wnika nie tylko w strukturę tekstu, w którym obecny jest badany element religijny, ale stara się go interpretować w konfrontacji z kerygmatem apostolskim, by odsłonić jego istotne cechy chrześcijańskie, bądź niechrześcijańskie (np. religijność naturalną). Analiza kerygmatyczna, nazwana tu „metodą Maciejewskiego”, polega na rzetelnej refleksji nad wszystkimi aspektami utworu literackiego i wpisaną weń koncepcją antropologiczną, w szczególności zaś nad „kondycją duchową” człowieka, będącego podmiotem utworu.
The article attempts to compare the kerygmatic analysis as it was used by Marian Maciejewski, with the studies of the relation between religion and literature that had been used in studies of literature earlier. The school developed at the Catholic University of Lublin, to which the Professor referred, represented by scholars of such a caliber as Czesław Zgorzelski, Irena Sławińska, Maria Jasińska-Wojtkowska or Stefan Sawicki, made a very important contribution to developing a methodology of research on the sacrum in literature. Against this background Maciejewski's suggestion goes further; it not only probes into the structure of the text, in which the studied religious element is present, but tries to interpret it as confronted with the apostolic kerygma, in order to reveal its important Christian, or non-Christian features (e.g. natural religiousness). The kerygmatic analysis, called here “Maciejewski's method”, consists in diligent reflection on all the aspects of a literary work and on the anthropological conception inscribed in it, especially on the “spiritual condition” of the man who is the subject of the work.

Artykuł jest krytycznym omówieniem książki Jerzego Madejskiego Poetologie postrukturalne. Szkice krytyczne. Autorka rekonstruuje poznawcze założenia przyjęte przez badacza, który recenzując naukowe dzieła, równolegle diagnozuje stan i perspektywy rozwoju dyscypliny. Formuła „postrukturalizmu” pozwala Madejskiemu wyeksponować rangę i wpływ strukturalizmu na sposób uprawiania naukowej refleksji w Polsce. O niewystarczalności krytycznej wobec strukturalizmu kategorii „poststrukturalizm” świadczyć ma różnorodność poetologicznych wizji zawartych w omawianych przez niego książkach. Autorka konfrontuje ten sposób myślenia z charakterystyczną dla poststrukturalizmu tezą o słabej naukowości literaturoznawstwa. Czyta zgromadzone w tomie szkice krytyczne jako spójną propozycję metody akademickiej krytyki, opierającej się na przekonaniu o możliwej autonomii dyscypliny oraz jako praktyczną realizację tej idei.
The paper is a critical discussion of Jerzy Madejski’s book Poetologie postrukturalne. Szkice krytyczne. The author reconstructs the cognitive assumptions adopted by Madejski, who by reviewing academic works simultaneously diagnoses the state and opportunities for the future development of the discipline. The “after-structuralism” formula allows him to highlight the rank and influence of structuralism on the way of conducting academic considerations in Poland. The variety of poetological visions included in the books discussed by Madejski is supposed to be the evidence of the critical insufficiency ofa the “after-structuralism” category in reference to structuralism. The author confronts this way of thinking with the thesis which is characteristic for post-structuralism, i.e. that literary studies have little scientificity. The author reads the critical essays included in the volume as a coherent proposal for a method for academic critique, based on the conviction that it is possible for the discipline to be autonomous, as well as a practical realization of this idea.

Artykuł omawia ideologiczną treść dzieła jugosłowiańskiego laureata Nagrody Nobla Ivo Andricia. Jego spuścizna jest pojmowana w świetle problemów wielokulturowości, zauważono rolę charakteryzowania problemów etniczno-wyznaniowych na świecie. Przeprowadzono przegląd badań białoruskich filologów poświęconych Andriciowi. Analizowane są podobieństwa między pograniczem bośniackim a specyfiką historycznego rozwoju Białorusi. Uwzględniono także rolę, jaką może odegrać treść historiozoficzna dzieł jugosłowiańskiego pisarza w rozważaniu tych kwestii.
The article considers the problematics of the work of the writer of Yugoslavia, Nobel laureate Ivo Andrić. His heritage is reviewed in the light of the problems of multiculturalism. Its role in characterizing of ethno-confessional problems in the world is noted. A survey of the studies of Belarusian philologists devoted to Andrić is conducted. The journalistic texts containing references to I. Andrić are analyzed. Parallels between the Bosnian borderland and the peculiarities of Belarusian history are considered. The role that the historiosophical content of the works of the Yugoslav writer can play in dealing with these issues is also taken into account.

The article Cthulhu for Children. References to H. P. Lovecraft’s Works in John Bellairs and Brad Strickland’s Lewis Barnavelt Series discusses references to H. P. Lovecraft’s works in John Bellairs and Brad Strickland’s children’s horror novels about Lewis Barnavelt. Contemporary “children’s-like” books which make use of the Cthulhu Mythos are presented, as well as basic information about the series and relations between Bellairs and Lovecraft, which provide the foundation for an intertextual dialogue with the gentleman from Providence’s prose in the considered novels. Not only do the Lewis Barnavelt books, The Beast Under the Wizard’s Bridge in particular, utilize horror, but also ridicule it on the basis derived from the “great subversive play”. Therefore, carnivalesque world, in which ‘weak’ children defeat a Great Old One, contrasts with the universe known from Lovecraft’s writings, where humans, overwhelmed by the incomprehensibility and vastness of the cosmic power, are deprived of any hope.

Based on the prose of Bruno Schulz, the author examines the organization of the sound layer in terms of sound techniques used in them (rhythm, lead motif, instrumentation, anagram, situational rhythm, polyphony). This article contains a selection of notions from the Guidebook to the Novels of the West Slavs (a working title). The Guidebook is addressed predominantly  at researchers involved in comparative studies of the literatures of the West Slavs and it will cover fifty years (1945–1995) of novels written by West Slavic authors: Kashubian, Polish, Slovak (from Slovakia and the so-called  Lower Land), Czech as well as Upper and Lower Lusatian, and how they changed. Each entry will consist of a brief presentation of a novel’s content, bibliographical information (the subsequent editions, possible translations;  reception in the other languages will be limited exclusively to the West Slavs area), interpretation, a novel’s significance to a writer’s achievements,  specific national literature and, finally, the West Slavs’ novels as a whole, a selection (maximum five items) of the most important literature on the subject.

The article’s goal is to reflect on the perception of literary studies as an academic discipline in the 19th century Poland in the twenties and the thirties. The answer to this question may be found in lectures given in that time period at the University of Warsaw and at Vilnius University. The author analyzes excerpts of works by L. Borowski, E. Słowacki, L. Osiński and K. Brodziński in which they define the object of their studies and extrapolate on their methodological tenets. The analysis concludes with an attempt at defining the foremost tendencies in Polish literary studies of the time period, especially in regards to the relationship between the history of literature, literary theory and literary criticism.

Imię Františka Rut Tichý’ego (1886–1968), pseudonim Zdeněk Broman, który zajmował się tłumaczeniem na język czeski (głównie poezji) z niemieckiego, francuskiego i języków słowiańskich, bardzo dobrze znali przedstawiciele kręgów naukowych germanistów, bohemistów i slawistów. Obecnie zarówno tłumacz, jak i jego działalność należą do osiągnięć zapomnianych krzewicieli kultury słowiańskiej żyjących i pracujących w pierwszej połowie XX wieku. Autor artykułu omawia działalność Tichy’ego związaną z czeskimi badaniami białorutenistycznymi w okresie międzywojennym (niektóre z nich dotyczą okresu po 1945 roku), zwłaszcza w zakresie tłumaczeń literatury białoruskiej na język czeski (Yanka Kupala, Aleś Dudar, Arkadź Morkavka, Cishka Gartny). Po raz pierwszy opublikowano pełną bibliografię tłumaczeń Tichy’ego z języka białoruskiego (tłumaczenia zachowały się w prywatnych zbiorach archiwum literackiego Muzeum Piśmiennictwa Narodowego Pradze).
The name of Frantishek Rut Tihi (1886–1968) who gave himself the pseudonym Zdenek Broman was well known by German specialists, Czech specialists and Slavists. He was engaged in translations from German, French and the Slavonic languages into the Czech language (poetry mostly). Nowadays the author and his activity belong to the feats of forgotten propagators of Slavonic cultures who lived and worked in the first half of the 20th century. The article discusses his work devoted to Belarusian studies carried by Czech scholars in the interwar period (with some exceptions after 1945), especially the translations of the Belarusian literature into the Czech language (Yanka Kupala, Ales Dudar, Arkady Morkavka, Cishka Gartny). The bibliography of all Tihi’s translations from the Belarusian language has been published for the first time (translations have been preserved in his private resources in literary archives in Památníku národního písemnictví in Prague).

The article contains a synthetic overview of the trilogy The Age of Theory, edited by Danuta Ulicka. It is the first comprehensive study of the achievements of Polish theoretical literary studies since its birth in the 1920s. The edition includes a multi-author monograph, organized according to “cultural themes” (as understood by Opler), to which the author of the article devotes most of her attention,and an extensive selection of texts preceded by factual introductions (two volumes of anthology) representative of the problem blocks discussed in the first part. Without questioning the content of the anthology, and especially the cognitive value of the monograph, which is based on innovative methodological assumptions and proves that modern literary theory was born in Central and Eastern Europe, and Polish works played an important role in its development, the author wishes it included the work of W. Borowy, the pioneer of intertextuality or J. Baudouin de Courtenay’s texts, which foresaw heteroglosia and minus-device.

Opis:
The article deals with the ways in which Baroque works and their authors were presented in the positivist history of literature. The source material for the analysis was provided by the texts written by Piotr Chmielowski, Stanisław Tarnowski, Adam Bełcikowski, Henryk Sienkiewicz and Felicjan Faleński. The article discusses the sources for a rather distinct dislike of the literary output of Baroque authors in general, which was in line with the then well-established opinions deeply rooted in European research, but also derived from a valuation based on national and patriotic criteria. A certain differentiation in research methods is also indicated, mostly of those stemming from the spirit of Taine, but, occasionally, approaching Baroque works with the help of a stylistic analysis and thus making it possible to show more appreciation to the literature created in the period that, as understood from the positivist perspective, was believed to be of inferior quality.

Opis:
The essay reconstructs the scribal collection of Ragusan literature compiled by Đuro Ferić (1739–1820) and currently scattered across various libraries. It argues that the focus on individual scribes is the best way of understanding Ragusan manuscript culture and of identifying relationships among different manuscript witnesses. Once scribal collections are reconstructed, it is possible to determine to what extent scribes understood their job as involving specific editorial decisions rather than just mechanical copying of the text in front of them. The approach is recommended not just to scholars interested in manuscript culture but to those interested in the larger questions of literary history as well.
