Opis:
The aim of the study has been to recognize overbank deposits in the middle Wieprza valley, including their precise dating and assessment of local conditions of sedimentation. It is based on geomorphological and geological research of floodplain landforms and deposits. Ages have been determined using radiocarbon method, archaeological dating and, for minerogenic deposits, TL dating. Analyses have been performed on floodplain basin deposits, palaeomeander infills, and subfossil and recent overbank deposits. The studied palaeomeanders have variable infills from various periods of the Sub-Atlantic. They are accompanied by diversified point bar deposits. Floodplain basin deposits have a similar, Sub-Atlantic age. Both types of deposits are overlain by flood deposits, which have accumulated since the early Middle Ages. Contemporary flood deposits of the Wieprza river differ from the sub-fossil ones through more restricted occurrence, resultant from channelization and channel incision. Therefore, in comparison to the pre-channelization period, the extent of floods is smaller and does not encompass the entire Holocene floodplain. Flood overbank deposits form only in the immediate vicinity of the channel.

Opis:
Stronghold at Damice, situated on the right bank tributary of the Vistula – the Dłubnia River has been known since 1911. In the years 2004 to 2006 systematic excavations were carried out by the Institute of Archaeology of the Jagiellonian University. During these excavations the course of inner moats and embankments was confirmed. They divide the surface of the stronghold into 3 units. The construction of embankments dividing the interior of the embankments was recognized. It was a single line of palisades and wooden-earth wall. From the outside embankments were preceded by "dry" moat, of a width of 2.7–4.5 m and depth to 3.7 m. The two-phased perimeter embankment was also recognized. During the research a number of features of the Lengyel Culture were discovered as well as slightly less numerous Early Medieval features, most likely functioning simultaneously with embankments and moats (i.e. in the VIII-X centuries).

The article presents the issue of the medieval castle in Skawina as one of the most import ant strongholds erected on order of King Casimir the Great. The origins of the castle and town were closely connected with the process of creating, by King Casimir the Great, of a defensive system of the Polish state based on erecting new fortresses and rebuilding the existing ones, which were to strengthen the state frontiers, particularly in the west. The article presents the history of the no-longer-existing castle. Moreover, available iconographic and cartographic materials were also presented, as well as the author's hypothesis concerning the plan of the structure.

Opis:
The early medieval fortified settlement in Bonikowo was located within the wetland, in very marshy backwaters of the middle Obra river (the Obra Marshy Meadows). The Bonikowo stronghold belonged to a system of numerous small castles of southern Great Poland which had been formed in the period before the rise of the centralized state. This was a concave fortified settlement, consisting of many parts, with three ramparts, originating in different phases of the Middle Ages, as was confirmed by dating of archaeological pottery findings and by absolute dating. The castle was built with material from the sandy sediment of the Obra river backwaters. Geochemical analysis shows the length and intensity of the settlement and economic use of internal zones of the ramparts, especially of the internal zones within the rampart II, considered the oldest.

The paper presents the Early Medieval history of the Giecz settlement complex and characteristic of its landscape. The stronghold in Giecz is the oldest among the so-called central strongholds of the Piast monarchy, dated to around 865 AD, i.e. to the tribal period. The settlement was located in the vicinity of Góra Górzno - probably a sacred mount. The remains of stone architecture – palatium were dated to the first half of the 11th century. The studies on vegetation history, based on the sediments from fossil lake, provided a Holocene record of environmental changes and development of cultural landscape

Palaeoecological studies provided records of environmental changes and cultural landscape development in the prehistoric periods and early historical times. Reconstructed changes of floristic diversity correlate well with the cultural processes.

The early medieval stronghold in Kalisz was established in the ninth century among the branches of meandering Prosna river. The stronghold's castle was located on the floodplain terrace of Prosna river at an altitude of 100-108 m asl. In the tenth and eleventh centuries numerous redevelopments within the town occurred. In the early thirteenth century, as a result of fightings among dukes, the stronghold was exposed to destruction. Long-term flooding (1221-1223) resulted in the change of the main Prosna river channel. Prosna no longer assured the settlement with defensive functions. The above, and subsequent invasion of duke Henry I the Bearded (Henryk Brodaty) on Zawodzie in 1233, determined moving the castle on a fluvial terrace, in today's center of Kalisz.

The stronghold architecture was the main feature of the medieval cultural landscape of the region. In the light of historical records, archaeological data and palaeobotanical reconstructions, the Early Medieval Great Poland was a land of strongholds and arable fields.

In the southern part of the Woświn lake there is a vast peninsula called “the Devilish Causeway” by local people. On the peninsula there is located an archaeological site that was excavated by Alfred Rowe in 1934. During the research a stone construction measuring 10 x 11 m was found. Function of this feature had aroused controversy but in the end, W. Filipowiak’s hypothesis that these were the remains of a Slavic cult construction was accepted in the literature. Further analysis however of the archive materials has shown that the stone construction found by A. Rowe is not a Slavic cult construction but an underpinning of a wooden one- or more-storey building such as those built by medieval knighthood within motte-and-bailey castles or so-called “manor houses on a mound”. It is likely that its owner was a representative of the wealthy family von Wedel.

Opis:
The beginning of the twenty-first century was a period of special events for Kraków related primarily to the 750th anniversary of the town’s foundation location under Magdeburg law. This jubilee resulted in a variety of scientific and research projects. As with the 700th anniversary celebrated in 1957, a number of historical and archaeological studies were carried out, which provide a summary of current knowledge on the history of the city. They were presented in the form of scientific and cartographic publications, and popular ones. In the course of the jubilee (2005–2007) a few occasional exhibitions were prepared, among which worth mentioning are the exhibitions on Kraków legends and related historical figures, the life and culture of the Kraków stronghold complex from the eleventh to the thirteenth century, as well as the changes that took place in Kraków after foundation in 1257, during the period from the thirteenth to the eighteenth century. In the first decade of the twenty-first century a series of archaeological excavations were undertaken during the renovation of the main squares and streets of the city. These included the western (2002–2004) and eastern (2003, 2005–2010) part of the Main Market Square, the Small Market Square (2007), and the Szczepański Square (2008) and the main streets in the Old Town. The results of these studies have already been partially published in “Archaeological Materials” issued by the Archaeological Museum in Kraków (Vols 36 and 37), and most of all in the “Krzysztofory, the scientific journal of the Historical Museum of Kraków” (Vols 28 and 29)

She describes the origins of the „gród" (stronghold), a construction form typical for Slavonic territories of the early Middle Ages. She also characterizes the construction technology and the kinds of fortifications used. The history of the Tum island is discussed from the beginning of settlements there in the context of the emerging Polish state. Since almost the entire knowledge of the stronghold at Ostrów Tumski is rooted in archaeological research, the history of excavations is presented from their beginnings in 1938 up to the most recent results of studies on the fortifications obtained in 2011

The paper New Data for Research on the Cuiavian Strongholds from Mietlica and Borkowo concerns issues of archaeology and the protection of monuments. It briefly discusses the state of hitherto research and knowledge on the strongholds in Mietlica and Borkowo. Then there follows a thorough analysis of aerial photographs (made by Łukasz Oliwkowski) of both these defensive premises. e discussion is separately completed with data acquired in consequence of subsequent surveys of the strongholds in Mietlica and Borkowo, carried out in the years 2007–2014. In the case of the castrum in Mietlica, the aerial photos and field surveys allowed for the recording of traces of the area in front of the rampart, the moat and the gate. Furthermore, a putative course of the eastern rampart (now levelled) of this premise was identified. In the case of the stronghold in Borkowo, it was possible not only to record its shape (the premise is two thirds destroyed) but also to propose a daring supposition concerning the vicinity of this Early Medieval stronghold. Based on aerial photographs, it was possible to state that the stronghold was accompanied with a suburbium to the south-east. All these pieces of information seem to be relevant from the point of view of possible excavations at both sites in future. At the same time, this data should also be of significance from the point of view of the heritage protection service and the protection of the discussed strongholds.

Opis:
The paper explores the issue of the 1030s, significant for, inter alia, the Polish medieval studies. It centres, in essence, on the verification of the view that the examined period can actually be deemed to have been a breakthrough in the functioning of the stronghold structure within the Piast state. Furthermore, the article addresses the question whether, in the second half of the eleventh century, the network of strongholds stood at variance with the one prevailing during the reign of Mieszko I and Boleslaw I the Brave. A political history of the 1030s, discussed on the basis of extant written sources, e.g., Gallus Anonymus, Cosmas of Prague, Tale of Bygone Years and Annales Hildesheimenses provides the starting point for analyses, most valuable for the discussion being pieces of information appertaining to the invasion of Bretislaus I and subsequent expeditions of Yaroslav the Wise into the Piast lands. Records relating to these events reveal that some strongholds were destroyed (Poznań, Gniezno), other abandoned (Giecz) or lost (Belz, Red Cities). Next, the author refers to the studies of some historians and archaeologists regarding the problem of the 1030s and the purported breakthrough in the functioning of the stronghold structure. The first research questions relating to this issue is whether the medievalists have source material (other than written) at their disposal that would enables them to determine what other strongholds, besides the ones cited above, were destroyed in the 1030s. Another question relates to the erection of new strongholds in the second half of the eleventh and in the twelfth century. It is interesting to find out whether the construction of these strongholds somehow ensued from the disaster of the 1030s. The answer to these questions necessitates the consideration of various methods of dating the relics of strongholds along with their reliability, which is particularly important in the context of hypotheses advanced by archaeologists. A large group of strongholds is believed to have ceased to function in the 1030s, as purportedly attested by results of archaeological research and dating. The author nonetheless demonstrates that establishing the chronology of strongholds by dint of pottery within one decade and with respect to the 1030s is unmanageable and draws the reader’s attention to the weaknesses of chronology based on dendrochronological, radiocarbon and AMS methods. The image of the 1030s catastrophe ought to be referred to the strongholds of Wielkopolska, inasmuch as they are mentioned in written sources. Finally, the author attempts to verify if there were other principal Piast strongholds within the then Piast domain, which were partially or completely destroyed throughout this period. Here, he refers to the results of the excavations carried out on the relics of strongholds in Kruszwica (Kujawy), Płock (Mazovia), Przemyśl (the Sandomierz Region), Kraków (Małopolska) and Wrocław (Silesia). The results of the analyses have revealed that the vast majority of these structures did not fall into destruction circa mid-eleventh century. To conclude, in view of the fact that several most important strongholds in the Piast state continued their existence, whilst key strongholds of Wielkopolska, their damage notwithstanding, were rebuilt, the 1030s should not be referred to as a breakthrough period in the functioning of the stronghold structure.
