Opis:
This paper explores 2 methods of modifying the Strain Index (SI) to assess the ergonomic risk of multi-task jobs. Twenty-eight automotive jobs (15 cases and 13 controls) were studied. The first method is based on the maximum task SI score, and the second method is modeled on the NIOSH Composite Lifting Index (CLI) algorithm, named cumulative assessment of risk to the distal upper extremity (CARD). Significant odds ratios of 11 (CI 1.7–69) and 24 (CI 2.4–240) were obtained using the modified maximum task and CARD, respectively. This indicates that modification of the SI may be useful in determining the risk of distal upper extremity injury associated with a multi-task job.

Opis:
Many occupations in industry such as metal stamping workers, electronics parts assembly operators, automotive industry welders, and lathe operators require working in a standing posture for a long time. Prolonged standing can contribute to discomfort and muscle fatigue particularly in the back and legs. This study developed the prolonged standing strain index (PSSI) to quantify the risk levels caused by standing jobs, and proposed recommendations to minimize the risk levels. Risk factors associated with standing jobs, such as working posture, muscles activity, standing duration, holding time, whole-body vibration, and indoor air quality, were the basis for developing the PSSI. All risk factors were assigned multipliers, and the PSSI was the product of those multipliers. Recommendations for improvement are based on the PSSI; however, extensive studies are required to validate their effectiveness.

Opis:
The purpose of this study was to develop a body characteristic index (BCI) based on the distribution of maximal oxygen uptake per body mass (VO2max/mass), body surface area per body mass (BSA/mass), and percentage of body fat (Fat%) to evaluate the relative level of individual physiological responses to heat strain in a group of workers. BCI was based upon the data obtained from 10 males and 10 females exercising for 60 min on a treadmill at 2 relative exercise intensities of 25% and 45% VO2max in mild, warm wet, and hot dry climate condition, separately. BCI was developed into 2 formulas, which were proved to be better predictors for heat strain responses than each individual characteristic, and more sensitive than body type to describe the distributions of individual characteristics and distinguish the differences in physiological responses to heat.

Opis:
Waste products such as fly ash can be an economically advantageous alternative for lime and cement in ground improvement techniques. Current state of knowledge indicates the possibility of using this material successfully in various engineering projects. However, the chemical composition of fly ash is related to the type of coal and combustion technology used in power plant. This fact indicates need for further studies aiming determination the effect of fly ash addition on soil properties. Rate of soil improvement considered in macro level includes designation of treated soil mechanical properties, inter alia compressibility characteristics. Presented results of laboratory tests are a part of a larger experimental work aiming to determine the suitability of fly ash from fluidized bed combustion for the purpose of soil strengthen with the use of selected ground improvement.

Opis:
Popularity of long-distance running has increased as well as number of female and male marathon runners. Whilst research into physiological characteristics of endurance trained athletes has significantly increased there are only few studies on the risk factors for respiratory failure in marathon runners. Therefore, the aim of the study was to evaluate the differences in respiratory function and the physiological strain in the response to exercise stress in marathon runners. Twenty three subjects (aged 36.1 ±11.6 years) participated in a marathon running. Prior to the run and after its completion, body mass and composition, spirometry and body temperature were measured. Based on pre- and post-run temperature and changes in heart rate, the physiological strain index (PSI) was calculated. Long-distance running significantly decreased the temperature of body surfaces (p < 0.05); no significant effects were observed regarding aural canal temperature and physiological strain index (PSI). Compared to resting values, post-marathon spirometry revealed a significant decrease in post-marathon forced expiratory volume (p < 0.05), peak expiratory flow (p < 0.05) and maximal expiratory flow values (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the long-distance running results in functional changes within the respiratory system which may limit the adaptive potential and decrease exercise tolerance.

Opis:
Products used in the construction of machines and shipbuilding as well as petrochemical industry, such as shafts, bars, pipes and the like from two-phase stainless steel are currently very popular. It is required that they meet certain quality criteria. They must be characterized by suitable properties of the surface layer to meet the requirements of potential buyers. In the article impact of processing parameters on the degree of relative strain hardening and index of surface roughness reduction were presented. The burnishing process was carried out for two-phase stainless steel. Burnishing process of the shafts neck was performed using burnisher roller. The experimental research were obtained in the surface layer increase in hardness and the material ratio curve a convex shaped, which, taking into account the load capacity of the surface will be directly affected by its resistance to wear and corrosion. The experimental research by application of the burnishing process was made in the Laboratory of Production Engineering. After the studies it was found that the hardness of the surface layer and the roughness of the shaft necks an important influenced by technological parameters of processing (burnishing speed, feed rate and depth of burnishing). The objective of applying burnishing process may be, for example, the need to increase surface smoothness and dimensional accuracy of part.
