    This article analyses the evolution of civil-military relations in Spain from 1923 to 2021. The research defines the role of the military organisation during two authoritarian regimes in the 20th century along with the country's democratic transition. After a historical overview, the military change process known as Experimental Brigade 2035 is selected as a case study to determine whether its origin is civilian or military in nature. The results of the research evidence the civilian influence in budgetary issues and limits in performance. At the same time, the military has a certain autonomy to implement modernisation plans in the framework of assigned competences.

    Niniejszy artykuł jest poświęcony odmiennym rolom, jakie odgrywały kobiety w siedemnastowiecznej armii hiszpańskiej. Jako że zagadnienie obecności kobiet w armiach przedprzemysłowych nie cieszy się wielkim zainteresowaniem wśród badaczy, problem ten nadal jest przedstawiany zgodnie ze stereotypami ukształtowanymi przez dziewiętnastowieczną historiografię i wczesne prace historyków wojskowości. W ich świetle kobiety w armiach wczesnonowożytnych przyjmowały co najwyżej rolę służących, praczek, kucharek lub oferowały usługi seksualne. Nowsze prace historyków z kręgu społecznej historii wojskowości rzucają jednak kompletnie inne światło na to zagadnienie, ukazując je nie tylko jako aktywnie uczestniczące w życiu armii, ale też chwytające za broń czy szukające po wojnie pomocy dla siebie i sierot po żołnierzach. W artykule przedstawię trzy role kobiet, jakie wyłaniają się ze źródeł – kobiety walczącej zbrojnie, wdowy i matki – w siedemnastowiecznej armii hiszpańskiej.
    This article is devoted to the different roles played by women in the seventeenth-century Spanish army. As the issue of the presence of women in pre-industrial armies has not received much attention among researchers, the problem is still presented according to stereotypes shaped by nineteenth-century historiography and the early works of military historians. In their light, women in the armies of the early modern era assumed at best the role of servants, laundresses, cooks or offered sexual services. More recent works by historians of social military history, however, shed a completely different light on the issue, showing them not only as actively participating in army life, but also as taking up arms or seeking help for themselves and their soldiers’ orphans after the war. In this article, I will present the three roles of women that emerge from the sources – woman in armed combat, widow and mother – for the seventeenth-century Spanish army.

    This article presents issues relating to the uniforms of the Polish Army during the wars of 1918–21 in the context of the severe economic and epidemic crisis plaguing both the country and the region. Drawing on the accounts of participants and eyewitnesses of the war, and also by making recourse to the largely unpublished documents of the Sanitary Headquarters of the Polish Army Command-in-Chief, I look at the causes, scale and effects of the severe shortage of uniforms and equipment – shortages that would beset and plague Polish soldiers. The second part of the article presents institutional, top-down attempts to improve the situation involving substantial foreign procurements. Asking whether the crisis was ever truly resolved, the findings here offer ultimately a negative assessment of what ultimately transpired. The article’s final section indicates the relationship between the catastrophic situation regarding supplies and the threats posed by the Spanish flu and typhus.

    In the mid-1930s, the Polish military intelligence had conducted investigative and observation activities concerning the Italian-Abyssinian War and the Spanish Civil War. Both conflicts were considered as potentially valuable sources of information from the evolution of war art – technically, tactically, and operationalally. As a result, he also acquired a number of materials on combat mobility in the field and their supply in battle conditions. Unfortunately, most of them were downplayed by the Staff of the Polish Army, and the rest were unable to carry out a poorly-developed industry.
    W połowie lat trzydziestych XX w. polski wywiad wojskowy prowadził działania rozpoznawczo-obserwacyjne odnośnie do wojny włosko-abisyńskiej oraz wojny domowej w Hiszpanii. Obydwa konflikty traktował jako potencjalnie cenne źródło informacji z zakresu ewolucji sztuki wojennej – w aspektach: technicznym, taktycznym oraz operacyjnym. W efekcie pozyskał również liczne materiały na temat mobilności wojsk na polu walki oraz ich zaopatrywania w warunkach bojowych. Niestety większość z nich została zbagatelizowana przez Sztab Główny Wojska Polskiego, a pozostałych nie był w stanie zrealizować słabo rozwinięty przemysł.
