Opis:
The Lower Jurassic (Hettangian–Sinemurian) continental deposits of the Mehadia area (Caraş–Severin County) belong to the Presacina Basin, Upper Danubian Units of the South Carpathians, Romania. This un-named succession is exposed along large areas within the Greaţca Quarry where deposits of a complex braided river system can be seen. Nine clastic facies are identified within the Mehadia section and grouped into two facies associations reflecting two main sub-environments. (A) a fine-grained association, up to 6.5 m thick, composed of greyish black and dark grey massive and horizontally laminated mudstones interbedded with fine- to medium-grained sandstones showing ripple lamination, tabular low-angle large-scale cross-bedding and in some places massive sandstones. Within this association coarsening and fining-upward sequences are visible, while subordinate pensymmetrical-like sequences were observed. The sediments of the fine-grained association are interpreted as having been deposited along an alluvial plain from flood waters. The sandstone interbeds are interpreted as crevasse channel-fills and the thinner sandstone bodies as proximal crevasse splays. (B) a coarse-grained facies association represented by sandstones and conglomerates, both clast- and matrix-supported, from granule to pebble clast sizes. Almost all basal members of this association are underlain by erosional surfaces, while internal erosional surfaces occur at some levels. The coarse-grained facies association is interpreted as having been deposited within active river channels of a sandy braided river system. The occurrence of numerous erosional surfaces, the recurrence of the facies within this association (channel bodies), as well as the abundant mudstone and sandstone intraclasts all point to frequent conditions of erosion (including redeposition) of previously deposited sediments. The relatively low fine-grained sediment content (<25%) can be explained by two factors: (1) a creation rate for accommodation space was not enough for the accumulation of a large amount of overbank deposits; (2) a lack of larger quantities of fine-grained material being transported in the river system. Both factors may have operated independently or interacted.

Authorship issues are clarified, new photographic documentation is provided and emended systematic descriptions are presented for the oldest Cambrian trilobite taxa from the Holy Cross Mountains (Poland). Biostratigraphic analysis of the fauna allows correlation with the traditional Holmia kjerulfi-group Zone of Scandinavia, the Callavia Zone of Britain and Newfoundland, the lower and middle part of the Sectigena Zone of Morocco and the Marianian Stage of Spain. The trilobites display a strong biogeographic signal linked with West Gondwana and Avalonia and a suggestion is made that the TESZ margin of Baltica with the Malopolska Massif was liable to currents from those areas that distributed planktonic trilobite larvae.

Opis:
The Cieszyn Beds (Jurassic/Cretaceous) in the Flysch Carpathians (Southern Poland) contain limestones, which create favourable conditions enabling the preservation of the Holocene mollusc shells in the overlying soils. The malacofauna found at the Tul Hill in the soil underlain by the limestones, and containig their fragments, confirms the conditions enabling migration of the species between the regions located south of the Carpathian range and the lowlands to the north. The dominating species are represented by the mollusc associations living in the woodlands. This study reports the presence of a unique species Orcula doliolum (Brug.) in the Tuł Hill area. Detailed biometric measurements on the shells of this species show no variation by comparison with similar studies conducted by previous authors at other isolated localities throughout Europe.

Opis:
In south-eastern Poland and western Ukraine, the Outer Carpathian orogen and the Carpathian Foredeep developed in the foreland of the East-European Platform (Baltica). The area consists of a number of tectonic units included in the Trans-European Suture Zone (TESZ): the Łysogóry–Radom and Małopolska blocks in the territory of Poland, and the Rava Rus’ka Zone, Kokhanivka Zone and Leżajsk Massif in the Ukraine. The development of the TESZ began in the (?Middle) Late Neoproterozoic and was associated with rifting processes taking place along the western edge of the East-European Craton (Baltica) during the break-up of the Rodinia/ Pannotia supercontinent. The passive margin of Baltica evolved into the TESZ during collisional and/or strike-slip movements. In the TESZ (Małopolska Block and Leżajsk Massif), Ediacaran flysch-type siliciclastics were affected by weak metamorphism and folding during the Cadomian orogeny. The development of Cambrian deposits in the East-European Craton, Łysogóry–Radom Block, northeastern part of the Małopolska Block (Kielce Fold Belt) and in the Rava Rus’ka and Kokhanivka zones was associated with the post-rift thermal subsidence. Tectonic movements (so-called Sandomierz phase), which occurred probably due to an oblique collision of the Małopolska Block (included into the passive margin of Baltica) and the East-European Craton during late Middle Cambrian to Late Cambrian (possibly also Early Ordovician) times, resulted in the following: (1) development of stratigraphical (?erosional) gaps in the Middle and Upper Cambrian sections of the Lublin–Podlasie slope of the East-European Craton and the Kielce Fold Belt in the Małopolska Block; (2) intense tectonic subsidence of the Łysogóry–Radom Block during the deposition of Middle and Upper Cambrian sediments; (3) development of compressional folds in the Lower Cambrian to lower Middle Cambrian deposits of the Kielce Fold Belt on the Małopolska Block. Ordovician–Silurian series were deposited in a typical flexural foredeep basin, in which subsidence and deposition rates accelerated during Late Silurian (Ludlow–Pridoli) and Early Devonian (Lochkovian) times. It is postulated that the present position of the Małopolska Block relative to the Łysogóry–Radom Block and East-European Craton resulted from post-Silurian dextral movements between the Małopolska Block and the East-European Craton. Devonian–Carboniferous deposits occur only in the Małopolska Block located in the Variscan foreland. The Middle-Late Devonian and Early Carboniferous shallow-marine carbonate platforms developed under an extensional regime. The siliciclastic Upper Visean–Lower Namurian A Culm series were deposited in the flexural Variscan foreland basin. During the Late Namurian A, the Małopolska Block was uplifted in response to the build-up of compressional foreland stresses. During post-Carboniferous times, the Precambrian and Palaeozoic deposits were subject to erosion and restructuring during the Alpine orogeny.

Opis:
Southeastern Poland is one of the oldest petroleum provinces in the world. Although hydrocarbon production has been conducted in this region since the middle of 19th century, there is still a good potential for more discoveries. 9 billion cubic meters of high methane gas reserves reported in the years 2000-2006, when combined with the previously discovered gas fields, essentially satisfy gas demand for this area. Currently, Miocene deposit of the Carpathian Foredeep is the most prolific exploration target area with more than 100 discoveries of high methane gas. The total reserves of these fields are 138 billion cubic meters, and the cumulative production is more than 90 billion cubic meters of natural gas. Large gas fields in terms of area and reserves that have already been discovered are followed by present discoveries of fields with relatively smaller area, their reserves are up to 2 billion cubic meters. Current exploration efforts are focused on good understanding of the sub-miocene basement configuration as well as detecting of seismic anomalies directly related to natural gas accumulations. Another very important element of exploration strategy for Southern Poland is the Mesozoic and Paleozoic deposits of the Carpathian Foredeep. The most prospective for discovering of sizeable hydrocarbon fields are Cretaceous (Cenomanian) sandstones and Upper Jurassic carbonates, locally also Middle Jurassic sandstone as well as Lower Carboniferous and Devonian carbonates. So far 13 gas fields and 10 oil fields have been discovered in the Mesozoic and Paleozoic of the Carpathian Foredeep and the sub-Carpathian basement with booked reserves of 7.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas and 4.7 million tons of oil. The cumulative production amounts to 6.1 billion cubic meters of gas and 4.3 million tons of oil. Different exploration problems have been encountered in the Carpathians. Most of the fields which have been discovered in the Flysch Carpathians occur in shallow, steep, narrow, commonly thrusted and faulted folds. Oil and gas fields discovered so far in the Carpathians have small reserves. Additionally, discovered and booked reserves of existing oil and gas fields are depleted to a large extent. 17 gas fields and 67 oil fields have been discovered in the Carpathians. Booked reserves amount to 16.6 billion cubic meters of natural gas and 12.3 million tons of oil. Cumulative production has been 15.2 billion cubic meters of gas and 11.9 million tons of oil. To sum up, it should be emphasized that the bulk of gas reserves discovered, booked and developed recently in Southern Poland comes from the autochthonous Miocene deposits. This trend, which involves high methane gas, is expected to continue for the next few years. Potential oil discoveries can be attributed mainly to the flysch Carpathians and Paleozoic, but requires more research and further exploration on a larger scale.

Opis:
Multidisciplinary studies conducted along two geodynamic test transects across the Polish segment of the Western Carpathians, crossing the Orava Basin in the west and the Pieniny Klippen Belt and Magura Nappe along the Dunajec River valley in the east, included gravity and geodetic surveys as well as geological investigations. Gravity and geodetic surveys were carried out annually in years 2004-2006. Their results appear to suggest recent subsidence of the Orava Basin, particularly intensive in a Quaternary graben in the northern part of the area, confirming conclusions derived from geomorphic analyses. Data obtained for the Dunajec River transect do not show any particular differentiation among individual benchmarks, what can point to either minor uplift of the entire area, minimal differences between successive slices of the Magura Nappe and the Pieniny Klippen Belt, or both. Horizontal displacements of benchmarks, different for the western and eastern transects, towards the west and SW as well east and SE, respectively, can result from general uplift of the area comprised between these transects. On the other hand, the N to NNE-oriented vectors of recent horizontal motions, observed for stations located south of the Pieniny Klippen Belt, point to the ongoing NNE-directed push of the ALCAPA block.
Zintegrowane studia grawimetryczne, geodezyjne i geologiczno-geomorfologiczne przeprowadzono na dwóch profilach przecinających szereg jednostek środkowej części Karpat polskich, wykazujących zróżnicowane tendencje neotektoniczne: w poprzek Kotliny Orawskiej na zachodzie oraz wzdłuż beskidzkiego przełomu Dunajca na wschodzie. Pomiary grawimetryczne i geodezyjne wykonywano corocznie w okresie 2004--2006. Przemieszczenia poziome reperów usytuowanych w obrębie Karpat zewnętrznych, a skierowane ku zachodowi i SW w profilu zachodnim oraz ku wschodowi i SE w profilu wschodnim, mogą odzwierciedlać wypiętrzanie obszaru ograniczonego profilami, tj. masywu Gorców.
