Opis:
This paper explores a variety of methodologies that offer ethnographic access to the kinds of “humanly organized sound” that typify urban acoustic spaces. The case studies draw from ongoing research on Sufi Muslim rituals in the Western Balkans (especially Kosovo), exploring ways in which sound articu lates difference in cities (urban heterophony) and in so doing mediates notions of place. Three methodologies are put forward here: first, documentary sound studies, an attempt to bring together the kinds of mediarich practices of visual anthropology, acknowledging that academic prose has inherent limits in its ability to represent; second, media archaeology, a critical reappraisal of media archives (whether intentionally designated as archives or not) as repositories for audio and other materials—both physical and virtual—which si multa neously reflect and shape the priorities of the archive and its discursive practices; and finally, aural flânerie, emphasizing passage through city spaces as a way of interrogating the boundaries and marginal spaces comprising the city. These ethnographic approaches offer a set of tools particularly suited to the socially enmeshed, collaborative realm of urban ethnomusicology, all the more so as technological developments raise questions about many of the basic premises of what constitutes fieldwork and ethnography in the past.

Opis:
The founding of Vancouver Co-operative Radio in the 1970s provided any interested citizen in this Canadian city with the opportunity to explore radio and its experimental, as well as creative potential. In this talk, I will trace how my personal experience of broadcasting Soundwalking— a weekly one-hour programme that took the listener into the soundscape of Vancouver and its surroundings — not only gave me valuable radio-making experience on many levels, but also changed my relationship to the city I lived in — a shift that happened for everyone with a radio programme at the station. Some insight will be given into the workings of Co-op Radio, its structure, decision-making processes, the notion of “participating listener”, and what it means to have the opportunity to “speak back” to the world through the medium of radio. Various creative/artistic possibilities for such radio making will be examined, e.g. “radical radio”, a concept coined by R. Murray Schafer, and in particular the idea of a radio listening through its microphones to the world: instead of merely broadcasting at us, we listen through it

This article shows acoustic measurements from Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic, located in the Arctic Ocean. The aim of the research was to show the Svalbard soundscape as well as to record and analyse the spatial-temporal dynamics of the acoustic environment, the human impact on the soundscape and to collect baseline data for future comparative research. Svalbard is interesting for many science disciplines because it has an arctic climate and, at the same time, it is relatively easily accessible. Climatologists, geologists, glaciologists, biologists and even anthropologists could find interesting themes to investigate here. Additionally, the soundscape of Spitsbergen is worthy of detailed examination. This paper presents comparative analysis of the soundscape of various spots near Longyearbyen in Management Area 10. The soundscape analysis of selected valleys shows the strong influence of human activity on the soundscape as well as the variability and characteristic features of the natural Arctic soundscape.

Kultur. Von den Cultural Studies bis zu den Visual Studies (Bielefeld 2012), a propaedeutic and synthetic book edited by Stephan Moebius, contains a chapter on sound studies, which was written by Holger Schulze. Arguing that no model of a homogeneous science of sound can be maintained, Schulze advocates studies that retain processuality, performativity, heterogeneity and hybridity of the cognitive process. Subsequently, when he was presenting the development of sound studies, he was able to take into account the experiences of the musical avantgarde, the development of theoretical research on sound, and various practical consequences and transformations of ethnomusicology. Schulze devoted the most attention to what it meant, means and will mean to study the world of sound, i.e. the world of sounds and the sounding world.

Opis:
On the basis of works devoted to the topic of sound studies and video games, the author presents ways of processing and using sounds in order to create virtual phonic spaces. He examines the means by which contemporary game developers influence immersivity, i.e., the process of immersing the gamer in virtual environments, as well as indicating the mutual influences of audial and visual spheres. Analysig the video game Grand Theft Auto IV from the perspective of the sound which accompanies the action, he compares in this respect three areas of the game’s Liberty City with their equivalents in New York on which the virtual city is modelled. The similarities and differences between the digital and virtual spaces are identified, and the reasons for them explained. This makes it possible to show how the use of the tools (explained earlier) employed by the developers of the game enable them to create a credible sounding virtual metropolis.

Opis:
The article is an attempt to enter scientific reflection relating to radio reportage in the field of sound studies, especially in one of its original elements — the theory of soundscape created by Raymond Murray Schafer in the 1960s. It starts with the basic terminological solutions in the field of soundscape and the audial form of reportage, then juxtaposes them with each other and indicates the possibilities of their mutual penetration in both scientific and media fields. It presents the common features of a radio documentary and a soundscape, e.g. focus on reality, attention to sound, specific narration, the use of the oral history method etc. This paper also shows the difference between these two forms such as a greater level of creativity in the case of reportage in combination with the “raw” naturalness of the soundscape. It also highlights how the idea of acoustic ecology can use radio reportage to disseminate its assumptions. Finally, it postulates the inclusion of this audio genre as an element of the soundscape to a harmonious hi-fi space and considers as justified to set together the experiences of both the discussed phenomena on theoretical as well as practical grounds, and to continue the reflection as sketched out in this article.

Opis:
In her Nobel Prize speech, the first reporter who received this award, called herself “a human ear”. Swietlana Aleksijewicz’s statement inspired Katarzyna Michalak, a radio reportage artist, who, by carefully listening, noticed an experience shared by reporters who were explaining the world around them through various media. The author of this article, inspired by the meeting of two great reporters, decided to investigate how listening and acoustic space found expression in literary reportage. This article explores a research question concerning the functions of the sound sphere, and not only related to the protagonist’s voice, but also to his acoustic environment, present in the literary reportage. Therefore, the aim of this article will be to try to answer this question by analyzing the content of four Polish literary reports: Nie ma Mariusza Szczygła (2018), Błoto słodsze niż miód. Głosy komunistycznej Albanii Małgorzaty Rejmer (2018), Agonia. Lekarze i pacjenci w stanie krytycznym Pawła Kapusty (2018) oraz Lud. Z grenlandzkiej wyspy Ilony Wiśniewskiej (2018). The analysis of the presence of sounds in literary reportage leads to the formulation of the following conclusions. Exposing the acoustic sphere in the course of the narrative plays the role of mood-formation by building the background and scenography of the story, as well as the semantic sphere. It can be a significant element of the plot or to emphasize the most important events. It also creates the characterization of the main character and gives the reader access to his emotions. It is also a reporter's expression of empathy, an attempt to convey the hero’s voice without distortions and modifications, along with its melody, intonation and natural rhythm. It can be said that by including the last aspect, the attitude of Svetlana Aleksijewicz is reflected in the work of Polish reporters, although it is implemented in various forms.

Opis:
The soundwalk was invented as part of the initiatives undertaken by the World Soundscape Project group with an acoustic ecology profile, which emphasised the noise pollution that exists in people’s sonic environment and the need to reacquire our ‘lost skill’ of conscious listening. Initially, the practice of soundwalking was used as a method allowing us to ‘hone our hearing’ (to boost our sonological competence), to show the human condition with respect to modern reality. Soon, the soundwalk became an inspiration for many artistic undertakings that made use of the sonic properties of the environment and employed various listening strategies. This article is designed to present the idea of soundwalking since its theory and practices began to form. By presenting selected works by Hildegard Westerkamp, I intend to show the motivations behind the practice of soundwalking, which encompass the complex issues of perceiving and assessing city sounds. I refer these to Tim Ingold’s proposition to understand sound as a medium of experience. Soundwalking, as a practice of conscious listening by focusing attention on aural sensations, paradoxically seems to reveal the multi‑sensory structure of our relationship with the world, and the mediatory function of sound in our experience of being‑in‑the‑world.

Soundscape research demands a holistic approach for the analysis of environments, yet any research method, e.g. soundwalk or lab-based listening test, has its advantages and limitations. The virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technology provides an alternative method for soundscape research, which may retain as much context as possible while enabling control conditions. The current phase of this research project focuses on the ecological validity of virtual reality environment for soundscape, by creating virtual environments for comparison of human experiences and responses in a real soundscape and three-dimensional virtual ones. The workflow of scene rendering on different levels of detail is described. The results are made publicly available.

Opis:
Sound design in film, described as “sound editing viewed artistically or aesthetically in terms of the shaping of the sound track in a film” (Buhler 2009, 430), is by definition a creative process demanding from its producers a great deal of inventiveness and aural imagination. Surprisingly, if one assumes that creativity is the key to successful sound design, it seems that very few contemporary soundtracks can be called successful at all. The goal of this paper is to examine the art of sound production in Baz Luhrmann‘s The Great Gatsby (2013) in terms of its creative use of sound. The analysis will focus on scenes from the movie in which sound does more to the overall impression and interpretation of the film than merely confirm the story that is told. Meanings of sound sequences in The Great Gatsby will be examined by in juxtaposition with selected plot elements. The sound in Luhrmann’s production is creative mostly because it serves unique and unexpected functions that make it different from what seems to be the usual cinematic practice. It correlates with images in an innovative way, plays with diegetic vs. non-diegetic distinction (which is applied in the score analysis), and creates certain sonic spaces through skillful editing. All these “subtle-but-meaningful cinemusical details” (Holbrook 2011, 252) allow for interpreting the film in contemporary contexts.

Opis:
The study objective was to understand the character and location of social conflicts in Poland’s soundscape. The analyses were based on a review of press and Internet articles from the years 2008–2015 and reports on noise, preceded by a review of the legal framework of protection against noise in Poland. Questionnaire surveys concerning Poland’s national parks and health resorts and the city of Lublin were an additional source of information. In the case of the former, the surveys were supplemented with a general examination of the acoustic determinants of social conflicts in the Podzamcze district. An analysis shows that sound in landscape has been a source of more than 100 social conflicts which were most frequently related to unpleasant sounds (noise nuisance) and the right to peace and quiet. The public demands acoustic comfort, one of the determinants of the quality of life. Therefore, it is necessary to know the public opinion on soundscapes (survey of sound preferences). Public consultations concerning the assessment of acoustic disturbance and sound preferences will make it possible to avoid social conflicts arising from insufficient knowledge. A major role is also played by the education of the public and decision-makers through sound awareness campaigns, e.g. as part of ecology education. The subjective assessment of noise nuisance severity and the acoustic design of public spaces should be an integral part of environmental noise control programmes and revitalisation programmes. The conducted studies demonstrated that understanding the character and location of social conflicts in soundscape is a major scientific problem. Its resolution requires combining sociological studies (questionnaire for the valuation of the subjective feelings of respondents) with field analyses (observations, acoustic measurements). It is a promising research field that has been developed to a limited extent so far.

The issue of acoustics is still underappreciated both in interior design in public utility facilities and in urbanized spaces. As noise pollution is on the rise, acoustic ecology is a vital part of responsible urban planning. The article explores the issue of sound in an open space in terms of noise protec tion, but its primary goal is to discuss it in the context of shaping a soundscape consciously. Finally, the article points out that it is crucial to protect soundscape as cultural heritage.

Organizations differ in terms of the soundscapes they shape. The workplace soundscape, i.e., the sound environment of the employee, is not only an element of organizational culture, but above all, insufficiently recognized by organizational and management researchers, a tool for stimulating or inhibiting the activity of employees. In the light of the issues outlined in this way, the article deals with the characteristics of the soundscape in an open-plan office space, which is specific due to the potential number of various sound sources spreading in the work environment without clear acoustic barriers. The aim of the article is to discuss examples of the functioning of employees in a specific sound environment and to indicate the proposed research directions on the soundscape of the workplace in an open plan office. The article is theoretical and empirical. The research interview included an analysis of the literature on the soundscape of various workspaces, an analysis of the content obtained from employees' statements on social media about the sounds that accompany their work, and an analysis of interviews with employees of the real estate service department of one of Polish corporations about the soundscape of the office space they manage. The survey shows that the workplace soundscape is not the only a matter of the employees' sense of aesthetics. Studying the sounds of work can be both an impulse for in-depth research on the organizational climate and a starting point for creating workspace management programs.
